Urge Archi Enduro RR Helmet

Urge Archi Enduro RR Helmet
At Urge, if there's a discipline that really talks to our hearts and for which we think we have expertise and legitimacy, it is for sure Enduro racing. Lets be clear straight away, we are very proud of our brand new ARCHI ENDURO R.R. ARCHI is still the name we are using because it was the first full face helmet dedicated to Enduro racing and R.R. because its evolution and we had one goal in mind: a Ready to Race helmet.

Our belief is that Enduro is the ultimate racing discipline. In its maturity it combines the speed and precision of a top gravity racer with the tactics and patience to continue at that pace through several longer stages.

We used the feedback from years of experience of EWS riders from the Canyon and Rocky Mountain Urge teams, with top riders like Fabien Barel and Flo Nicolai.  Our first priority was to satisfy their needs in terms of safety. This was the starting point to create the ultimate enduro racing helmet. We then had to work hard, especially to develop a unique fiber in order to obtain a highly safe helmet while being light enough to be worn during the long racing days. The comfort, fitting and ventilation were also high on the priority wish list.

The result is here, a design fundamentally driven by the demands of top level enduro racing. This helmet is the helmet any enduro racer can wish for and it will answer all their needs and is the result of our convictions when pushing their limits.

Outer shell and EPS
Our outer shell uses composite material, which is a unique blend of glass fiber (80%) and natural linen fiber (20%), mixed with a thermosetting resin. This material is meticulously laid out in order to obtain a multi-axial fibre with outstanding benefits that guarantees a better spread and diffusion of the shock waves more on the helmet than on the skull.

Our performances during the crash tests highly exceeded the legal requirements for the different norms (EN 1078, CPSC 1203, ASTM F1952, AS / NZS 2063) and outperform ABS, traditional and carbon fiber shells.

The focus was put on the chin guard in particular to obtain the best ratio between rigidity and necessary distortion to absorb impacts. The essential wide opening of the chin guard for optimal ventilation benefits from a high density polyurethane upper part. The obtaining of the ASTM F1952 norm, the only one that tests the chin guard, validates without a doubt the safety features highly sought-after.

The structure of the EPS has been designed to complete the unique features of the outer shell. Thanks to this exclusive combo, our helmet is lighter than the existing carbon top of the range models. We have created one of the safest helmets in this category with a weight under 1kg making it among the lightest.

Visor
Made of polyethylene, it is able to deform in case of an impact and exceeds the requirements of the norms. It is adjustable and fixed using aluminium screws.

Straps
The micrometric buckle is our choice for ergonomics, durability and quick use.

Rear ergonomics
A short cut of the neck aims at making more room at the rear to offer a perfect compatibility when using a backpack.

Urge Archi Enduro RR Helmet

Goggle/glasses compatibility
The wide opening aims to guarantee an optimal field of view, compatible with all goggles on the market, even the wider ones. Lateral “gripping” pads and the ergonomics of the helmet allow for a perfect position of the goggle strap.

Ventilation
10 vents allow good ventilation in any circumstances, even at low speed. Ventilation on the front of the helmet is particularly unique, thanks to the specific design of the chin guard. The wide frontal vents and the cheek pads were also specifically redesigned to allow a real air flow around the ears.

Fitting and inner padding
The inner padding is entirely detachable and washable. It was designed for optimal comfort and retention. The dual-density cheek pads were particularly elaborated to obtain a perfect fit. The one-piece pad brings excellent fit and comfort. The “bamboo treated” material used targets a triple efficiency: antibacterial, moisture wicking and hypoallergenic.

Finish
This helmet is a top of the range model that benefited of the highest attention to details in its design, to the smallest of details, and in particular in the choice of the high quality and durable materials.

It is a very good looking helmet for sure and completely different from the competition.

What I don't understand on this helmet or the 100% Aircraft DH helmet is the location of the side vents. It seems the designer placed them right on the path of the goggle strap.
  • 3 0
Same remark here... Vents are always welcome, but they seem useless if sealed by goggle strap.
  • 3 3
Just a guess but I'm going to say that any higher up towards the top edge of your head and that vent causes structural issues. Fold your goggle ribbon in half maybe?
  • 7 0
Maybe it could be useful during liasons
  • 7 0
You have to wear your helmet all the time racing enduro but you'll on run goggles for the descents really.
  • 3 0
Yeah, i dont really notice heat on the descents, it will be nice in the liasons!

@David1po why the hell would I buy something that makes me have to fold a strap over to use a "feature"?

That vent was put there so they could claim more vents and give them another reason to market a DH helmet as an enduro lid. The vent is pointless with a goggle set up.

Close that vent and it's a DH lid that weighs over 1000 grams. No longer has the word enduro attached to it and no longer has anything special to talk about.

Marketing.
  • 4 0
 @onemanarmy

Then don't buy it. However I highly doubt your whole strap will cover the vent. And various angles accounted for these vents probably do work.

And let me remind you if these were not there you would have some exceptional hearing loss thus they serve two purposes.

You can thank me when you hear the oncoming of a passing 4x4 and have time to position out of the way. Your welcome.
  • 2 1
 @onemanarmy

And spread your goggle strap out for me would ya and breath through it. Now the same lip puckering motion for some plastic lurking around.
  • 2 1
I won't buy it. I already have an "enduro" helmet @David1po

And look at the images... the strap covers about 80% of the vent. And I don't think I've ever had an issue hearing an oncoming vehicle... it's not like it's a prius coming up on me. But then again... I can't remember the last time I encountered a 4x4 vehicle while on my bike... on a trail... least not one that would make me consider wearing a DH certified lid.

But like I said... it's me. I don't see the purpose. I won't buy it. Thousands of other people will.

If they were calling this a DH helmet I'd say... damn... 990 grams. Not too bad. But they're not... It's an "enduro" helmet which puts it up against a different class of helmet... most of which weigh 2-300 grams less and vent better.

I get it though. A lot of people will be in to this helmet.

Glad you can drop yourself down to 3rd grade personal attacks though. Good for you.
  • 2 0
@onemanarmy you have a bit of a point about the marketing, but you aren't really seeing the whole picture. On transfer stages, there may be vehicles. This isn't a worry in dh. I would not want my ears compromised as much as they are in my full face when I'm riding at slower speeds with people around. (I use a Pro Tec Full cut for BMX and it's even questionable when on the street.) This could be a good option for someone who really wants a fully protective full face and plans to use it for enduro racing and not carry a half dome (since you have to wear your helmet at all times in many of these races.) There's the answer to your goggle strap argument - when the goggles aren't on, which is when you will need that ventilation (i.e. not going fast enough for good airflow), these vents are useful.

Could the helmet be better and less hyped? (oh! enduro this! enduro that! we are enduro experts! enduro!) Yeah, probably.

Also, I didn't see @David1po personally attacking you... he was trying to explain that a goggle strap is infinitely more breathable than plastic.
  • 2 0
@trialsracer... now that I can agree with.

That makes sense.

But you must not have read his comment about blowing through the strap and the plastic very carefully...
  • 6 0
Your accent will change to Fabien Barel's if you wear one.
  • 1 0
But the vent is in a recessed part of the side of the helmet! Any goggle strap will have a gap between it and the vent allowing air to flow through, especially when at speed. So, I see no problem with that vent location at all (though the rest of the helmet is pretty ugly IMO but hey...)
  • 1 0
My simple Answer: Kali Avatar 2 and Avatar X. Lighter then this, Fully DH certified as well, full chin guard, good Ventilation too and it even comes in cheaper. And with the fear about rotational Forces that might hurt the neck, even an 100 Gramm lighter Helmet will greatly reduce these. Or are we starting to wear neck braces in Enduro Racing next?

Just my two cents.
  • 1 0
 @chyu: Already OK here! ^^
  • 32 4
I know here at PB we like to shit on everything labelled "enduro" but this looks like a sweet helmet, and I hate to say it but these days $300 is fairly reasonable for a top of the line lid.
  • 3 1
yeah this sucks! I was just here for the comments but the helmet looks reasonable compared to previous urge offerings so no comment war today.
  • 9 0
My though process regarding helmets is: Spend a lot of money on a helmet you hope to never use.
  • 15 3
Ummmmnnn can't think of any thing to disagree with in this post...

Errrrrrrrr

"29rs are gay","looks like a session", "funk ebikes" phew that's better.
  • 15 2
doesn't have a water bottle cage mount - NEXT!
  • 1 0
Some sellers have really good prices for Urge helmets. I just purchased a brand new Veggie Down-O-Matic for 90 Euros at alltricks.com . It was a class B merchandise, though, but there's only a bit spilled glue inside, which is covered by the removeable inlay anyways.
  • 6 1
I just picked up the Met Parachute, that for the SAME price is made of carbon fiber, and has the same DH rating as Troy Lee's purpose-built DH helmets(so said the good peeps at Jenson USA anyway).
It's also lighter than this one IIRC.
  • 6 0
You should be careful talking about the MET Parachute on Pinkbike. If anyone has used it, such as myself, they'll be aware it's a pretty solid helmet, but of course pinkbike is full of people who don't have any experience with the product so they just slate it instead..
  • 2 0
The Parachute looks like it has an edge over this new Archi-Enduro in price and probably being lighter and venting better; plus it looks like you can fit a light on the top of the Parachute.
I have a Down-o-matic and even though its on the heavy side and get hot, the fit and finish are top notch. The paint job and finishing touches that Urge puts on the helmet make it looks very nice IMO. I've seen a Parachute in person and in terms of looks it's nothing to get excited about.
  • 1 0
I've actually ran a head torch on my parachute using the goggle strap binder on the back of the helmet, it worked really well! Urge helmets have always looked classy, but the parachute has its own class with the usually subtle matte finishes
  • 2 0
The Parachute is not made of carbon fibre.

While I think it´s a well designed and made helmet I only use it on tracks where I have to pedal uphill as well. It´s more like a CC/AM/Enduro helmet with a (decent) chinguard and it certainly feels that way. Would never use it instead of a proper dh/moto lid.
  • 2 0
And my neighbour spoke once to a guy who had a friend who ended up with the chin piece in his head... or something like this Smile
  • 2 0
I'm happy to see another helmet in the lighter fullface category..(im talk not removable chin bar)
I can't say enough good things about my MET PARACHUTE.....
I really like EVERYTHING about this helmet...
I believe it's a game changer, and everyone in the helmet manufacturing business will be making similar helmets...
My TLD A1 has NOT been used since i bought my MET about 6 months ago...
I will still wear my D3 on big bike days, but for enduro/AM/or even aggressive XC ...I will only wear my MET !!!!!!

who ever decided that half lids were good enough for AM/enduro was freaking crazy...
The MET Parachute is actually really good looking IMO and vents sooo well....
I will gladly sweat a LITTLE more on a hot day for the extra protection of my fullface...but honestly, I really don't anticipate my MET being that much hotter when summer comes?

time will tell....

I can wait for TLD to get into this game....
  • 1 0
Kali Avatar 2 or Avatar X are also pretty sweet for harder Enduro/AM riding/racing. Light, DH certified, good ventilation.
  • 6 2
This helmet is looking rad...! Really a good step to improve the older model. Urge is the only brand I know so far, who is doing a "not DH lid" passes all the norms and safety standards. Price, weight, safety standard - I want.
  • 5 2
Honestly I don't see how this is different to a dh lid. On the light side yes, venting looks ok, and better than their previous models, but not class leading. So what makes it not dh other than marketing?
  • 3 0
I have the old version, a very nice helmet but, you would not race enduro in Poland in such helmet simply because you have to wear helmet even on ascents. So you need either two helmets (in which case the second can be a DH FF) or a Bell 2R (or ride in half-shell and pray a lot)
  • 2 0
I think wearing helmets on the way up is mandatory in all enduro events, not just in our country. I've raced in a half-shell and lived to tell the story but it sure would be nice to have some additional protection. How is the old version on the uphills, does it make you sweat like a pig?
  • 1 0
The old version is ok on uphills up to 2°C, above you sweat like a pig :-)
  • 2 0
I can only speak for trails around Bielsko and Czarna Gora. I would never ever race them without a proper DH fullface since I ate dirt too many times there on a regular ride. Speeds are simply too high while you are additionally tired and eventually stressed by the ticking clock. I see no difference in magnitue of risks involved when racing DH on Stozek and Enduro on Kozia. In such situation having 2 helmets is a non-brainer to me. What is the problem with hanging a 300g helmet to your back pack? I have Bell Super 2R and while it would be my choice for every sunday ride with friends, I would always opt for a real FF when it comes to Enduro racing. This Urge looks legit enough for race run but not for climbing for half of an hour, even at 10C, which brings me back to my super light MET helmet for climbs and TLD D2 for descents. I find it riduculous to experience full body armor in huck to flat era and these days XC lids and skinny knee guards - all in same trails, with todays Enduro bikes allowing you to ride faster than DH bikes back then
  • 4 0
Can someone please explain why their visors have a hole in the middle of the darn thing?
  • 2 1
Its is pretty helmet and I originally own a down-o-matic which I think personally, is a design classic. However, this concept of reducing the resistance to crashes at the front of the helmets, at the peak and the mouth isn't confidence inspiring. I like my face and my teeth to be in the same place.
  • 3 0
I could be wrong, but I think it's like the crumple zone on a car: better to have a split lip than a broken neck type logic. Even though it has flex I suspect it would have to be a major impact before your mouth is in danger. Anyone else know better than me, I'm just hypothesising.
  • 2 1
except it doesn't crumple, it grabs the ground & digs your face into it, or at least that's what happened to a guy wearing the old version, that I stumbled on while researching the old version a few years ago. seeing a dudes lower teeth all the way through his lip was enough to get me to steer clear.
  • 2 0
@groghunter I read the same post and steered clear of the old version of this helmet!
  • 1 0
yea man, that photo was chilling. & that's coming from someone who's front teeth are fake from a bike crash.
  • 2 0
you are always going to have exceptions but what about the saves you don't hear about, but you've got go with what you are comfortable with
  • 1 0
I honestly don't care about the saves if one of the options is nearly ripping my lower face off. lots of other helmets I can buy.
  • 3 0
that's how personal choices are formed, you carry on mate and good luck to ya
  • 8 3
At 300 bucks, I have an Urge to shop around.
  • 5 0
Enduro neck shape! Enduro neck shape! Enduro neck shape!
  • 4 0
 SPECIAL enduro neck shape!!!
  • 2 0
 enduro
  • 6 1
they had an urge to redesign their old model.
  • 9 1
Did they hire an Archi-techt to design it?
  • 4 2
Didn't expect to ever comment on a helmet press release, but this thing looks awesome. If the reviews validate what I'm seeing and reading here, I'm in!
  • 3 0
Not bad....still dont understand the purpose of the hole in the visor though...
  • 3 0
I like that I could eat granola bars without taking off my helmet by feeding them in through that big vent haha
  • 3 1
That's a great looking lid! I like how their designs are improving very rapidly with each new model.
  • 1 0
I see that they addressed the chin guard on the new model. I avoided buying the old model due to the horror stories of the chin caving in when you need it most.
  • 1 2
Not sure why you'd buy this lid to tell you the truth... especially for enduro. It's got a crap ton of inner padding that looks hot as hell. The chin bar has that weird opening which in theory should help it breath better but it's in your line of site looking down and the opening is large up front anyways. The side vents are going to be 75% useless with goggles in use. There's nothing holding the strap on the back except texture. It's heavy.

You're basically selling a slightly better vented DH helmet... if you're on a course that you need that type of helmet... you can where a lighter weight DH helmet that'll work with neck protection. Otherwise you're using a standard MTB half shell or something like the parachute (way more vented) or the Super 2R.... detachable chin bar...

The MET is 250 grams lighter. Even with MIPS the Super 2R is also over 250 grams lighter.

But it is an interesting looking lid. I like the look of the visor, the rear neck area and the design language involved in that upper air groove.
  • 1 0
Not to disagree with you but I think I remember the first version being neck brace compatible. I would assume this carries over to the new version, but I could be pulling that out of my ass
  • 1 0
I don't know about this version. It doesn't say anywhere. It did make a comment about raising the neck line to make it more comfortable...

But that wasn't really my point either way. I was making the point that I personally don't see the point in buying a lid like this for anything. If you're riding DH or riding an enduro course that you feel like you need a DH lid... where a DH lid and a neck brace. If you're riding 90% of the other courses a lighter weight better breathing enduro lid makes more sense.

This is just a vented DH lid they're calling an enduro lid because enduro is the hot ticket marketing button right now.

But who cares either way. People love to thumbs down comments that don't nut hug every item posted up so this comment will vanish soon enough.
  • 2 1
just looks like a normal DH lid with slightly bigger top vents. pretty heavy as well.
  • 2 1
I might be missing something but what's stopping the goggle strap from slipping off the back?
  • 2 0
 Enduro non-slip goggle strap
  • 1 0
I think the little red dots are rubber to help
  • 1 0
if you had to choose bethween Archi Enduro RR with Leatt DBX what will you choose? no other option Smile
  • 1 0
So I was right about new archi enduro - saw it before on pinkbike @practice-ews-2016-round-one article
  • 1 0
Wanna one of them! Or two...
  • 1 1
A chin guard that passes the certification test, who'd have thought BELL...
  • 1 1
Does this chinbar detach? I don't see any hardware for it to detach?

This helmet weighs almost as much as the full-9 so why not compare it to that one? That passes...

The super2r is 300 grams lighter WITH the bar on it. 630 grams lighter with it off. Breathes better. It passes CE EN1078 and CPSC Bicycle which is what it was meant to pass.

It doesn't pass ASTM F1952 but it's not marketed as a DH helmet and wasn't intended as much... though I wouldn't be surprised to see all of that change... then that would make this helmet even more pointless than it already is.
  • 2 0
doesn't matter if chin detaches or not. it should meet the safety standard. The bell is being sold as a part time full face helmet that doesn't pass the test. I have the met, same weight and even better vented but chin doesn't deflect into my teeth like the bell does...
  • 2 0
 Yep. Sweet. Getting one.
  • 1 1
To roast or not to roast that is the question! Lol. Wait for Fox to release the Enduro Approved Airline Helmet! Haha
