by Karl Burkat
We received over 3,000 photos from the US Open weekend and had to pick 2 as winners for the US Open Photo Contest. The winner of the best DH shot is taking home a Shimano SAINT groupo and the winner of the Giant Slalom photo is picking up a brand new BOS N'dee fork.

The DH winner wasnt the best picture IMO. There were many better ones than that.

Like with anything it is a subjective process. We had a group of 6 people (from Pinkbike and pro photographers) rate the photos in order and chose winners accordingly. It wasn't about the sickest trick, but factoring in lighting, sharpness and capturing the essence of the race. And it was by no means a clear cut decision...But the DH photo is an excellent shot, great lighting and really shows determination in the riders eyes, also shows the rockiness of the DH track which was a defining feature of that course.

True, but there were a lot of better pics.

in your opinion, but you went judging so it doesnt matter

Yeah, just my opinion, but I think the winners were in fact the winners just because they had the pics that were most in focus and where the rider most stood out.

Hey thanks for the support guys. Although I don't think my photo should have one. Maybe if there was no dust out so i could use my flash Frown Had a very hard time with the lighting on that photo. Oh well I'm glade you all liked it!

The photographers were amateurs, they just happened to be taking pictures of factory riders. So yes, the amateurs are getting the sweet prizes.

With the amount of great photos of unsponsored riders that were taken, I really think that first should have gone to someone not on a full factory ride. I mean really, they don't need the parts. There are tons of amature and unsponsored riders that had great photos taken and could really use the parts of the money they could get from selling them just to keep racing. Don't get me wrong, the winning pics were good, but I really think that factory sponsored riders should have been inelligable for the prizes.

 Pedal.....

The Photographers "WON" the prizes, not the Person riding the bike in the photo..... Just an FYI... i'm a poor photographer that needs parts for my bike.....

Oh shit, sorry, I thought the riders got the parts. Nevermind, now I feel like a retard.

I really dont agree that the winning photos should have won, but all to their own. Especially with such amazing prizes on the line i think the judging should have been more open to the public. Such as it is in The Photo Forum

hate to be a hater but im sorry some of the downhill photos just weren't good from a photography standpoint, (exposures, focus, comp, . . . ) and deff liked the the bottom middle best

I agree with the judges decision. Some really sweet photos all around, but the winning photos had the best composition, timing, lighting, and everything else that takes mad photography skills to capture.
