Video: 5 Races, 1 Bike - Tom Bradshaw vs Every MTB Race at Sea Otter

May 12, 2022
by Pinkbike Originals

The Boss has set Tom a challenge, to race five pro mountain bike events in four days on one bike. It's Tom's first time to California so to add to his challenge, and make sure he got the full Sea Otter experience, he has to take on the races from the campground. What could go wrong?

0:20 - Intro
0:50 - Race 1
3:30 - Race 2
7:26 - Race 3
10:10 - Race 4
13:21 - Race 5

wait, what was that second race? Did you enter a eBike event on a normal bike? lol

 @SATN-XC stitch-up, I didn't come last thought. lol
  • 15 1
was surprised at the size of the field in the ebike race figured it would be at least 3000000 people

best thing i have seen on pinkbike

 Thanks heaps!

@Tombrad: that was sick mate. GT4 Laguna Seca Raceway section for the win.

I would love to see a Blake vs. Tom thing. I think it would be interesting for viewers and readers. I also like to think that the presenters of GMBN and Pinkbike would be friends/get along. I imagine any animosity would be driven by the revenue side of GMBN and Pinkbike (marketing, investor, ceo). I doubt the presenters/writers/camera folks give a sh*t. @henryquinney would probably know more.

I think Blake and GMBN took the win with this one. Perhaps less of a logistical nightmare without E-bike and DS but better bike choice with the Kona. Pinkbike results tell me that I shouldn't bring an enduro bike to an XC race OR a downhill race.

@penguinni: I can't speak to their revenue model specifically but we are down!

@A-HIGHLY-EDUCATED-PROFESSIONAL: Tom raced Pro category though, and slept in a tent because he's an animal. Smile
  • 12 1
@brianpark: Please steal Blake from GMBN as well. He would be such a good addition to the PB crew.
  • 2 2
@brianpark: Clearly a good night's sleep and proper recovery is essential to race success.
  • 4 0
@penguinni: that would be super fun, Blake is great!
  • 1 0
@A-HIGHLY-EDUCATED-PROFESSIONAL: At the Sea otter adn enduro bike is fine for the DH and the DS. Just set it up Dustcountry.
  • 5 0
Pinkbike was much more fun to watch.
  • 6 8
@brianpark: When sleeping in a tent is considered being an "animal".

Tells us you're out of touch without telling us.
  • 1 0
@misteraustin: Please, please, please, no Blake. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but I can't handle his presentation style.
  • 16 0
Wohoo!!! Finally! Awesome that you raced all f these I was done after Enduro and DH!

@KadeStoltz thanks for keeping on us mate!
  • 17 0
someone really should make the 5 events one bike thing an actual catagory
  • 13 0
 Nice work bro!
  • 11 0
Cheers Wyn - see you in Scotland mate

It seems a "Mountain Bike Pentathlon" would be a cool idea for an event. XC, Enduro, Downhill, Uphill and I guess Marathon, all on the same bike. Change tires probably, but that's it. Would be interesting what types of bikes would be picked. Probably a light weight enduro bike would be best, or trail bike maybe. I dunno, makes me wonder.

A definite "yes" from me. But then I also dream of an Olympic category where one athlete has to compete in every non-team sport. I do not even begin to know what sort of person could be that much of an "all-rounder", but I would love to see them try the pole-vault, weight lifting and floor gymnastics.
  • 2 0
I think you'd have to somehow weight the Enduro and DH results more otherwise the longer format styles will matter much more to the race results. Could be pretty cool idea if you figured out the right formula though
  • 2 0
@Icehawk: perhaps a simple points system based on what position you finish each discipline in?

I really want this to become a real thing.
  • 9 0
here comes your "non-electric e-bike". Awesome.

Most impressed with the tire changes. I never would’ve made it out of camp in time to make any of the races. Also my hands would be all mashed up.
  • 6 0
Numbers are wrong. It was 6 events if you include the nighttime thing before the XC …. that has to be great prep right there?!

So for the regular Joe, how much would those entry fees be for 5 races? $500? More?

We used to race multiple disciplines back in the day. The promoters even offered a small discount if you did. Then the promoters and insurance/judge fees for USACycling just kept bumping up the price until even a single race wasn't worth spending nearly $100 to race on a shorter and less challenging course than the years before.

Tom is just an animal. Fun video!
  • 9 0
Glad you liked it - I have been likened to a warthog before, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing

 @Tombrad: hakuna matata, mate

Fantastic work, Tom! Mental challenge, but love how you get in there and go for it. Absolute beast mode. I know it's easier siad than done making the video, but I could have watched an hour of that! Add in some racing with a bit of retrospective voice over. Given he was around, Levy post race interviews. If PB could afford him, bit of Wyn TV at the end. As always, looking forward to your next ridicuolous thing.

I once raced DS, DH, and XC at a Seaotter. That was too much and too hectic for me. Super fun to do but running from my DS racers to my DH start time was too much. Still, Seaotter was one of the most fun races because you get to race the exact same cause the pro do and see just how much slower you are.

Did the PB budget run dry so they couldn’t afford a hotel room and some proper food for Tom. Perhaps the 2 Mikes could have camped so the athlete could have the hotel space :-)
  • 6 2
Vegan Cyclist did the road races too.
  • 2 0
not all the same bike though. he was on 3 different bikes.
  • 5 0
@singlespeedoutlaw: VC still did great though. Cool to see!
  • 4 0
I'd be curious to see what a XC pro could do on a 150mm hardtail with 3 sets of tires (DH, XC, road).
  • 2 1
@quinnltd: get mid pack in each
  • 3 0
@DetroitCity: mid-pack in a road race is a tall order
  • 1 5
flag DetroitCity (May 12, 2022 at 11:41) (Below Threshold)
@pmhobson: I'm just saying they wouldn't win. I beat "pro" enduro racers on my XC bike. In an enduro. So I'm sure a real pro could also. DH race, last. Road race with road tires, peleton finish.

That should clear it up.better what I meant
  • 3 0
@DetroitCity: I don't think having a gear ratio smaller than than the inner ring on a road bike is going to get you anywhere but spat out the back the first time it heats up.
  • 2 0
Cool, I remember in an old Norba race near Spokane people did DH, XC, slalom, and trials on the same bike and there was an overall.

Love Sea Otter Videos. There is room for more than one Sea Otter All Events video in the world -- there is room for maybe 4 of them Smile Kudos @Tombrad! You smashed it.
  • 3 0
@penguinni big California energy, thanks mate!
  • 4 0
Next year can we remove his AXS battery and make him enter the SS race?
  • 2 0
I waited and waited for this video. I was so excited to see what happened. You did not disappoint! That was some strong work Tom!
  • 2 0
Not sure what I am more impressed with, the racing or the tire changes! I would love to see a tutorial on how you were able to make those speedy changes
  • 1 0
Didn't he do a blindfolded challenge with Christina to change a tire a little while ago? I guess being able to do it blindfolded helps...
  • 3 0
Came here for the content and you didn't disappoint Tom. MTBranimal. Good on yah mate!!!

That lizard is pumped for your endeavors.
  • 1 0
yeh how did that lizard in the intro not get more love??? Seems like he was your cheerleader @Tombrad
  • 2 0
Hahaha came here to see if anyone else noticed!
  • 2 1
Every time I change tires I have to re-rim tape. What am I doing wrong? It would have been easier for Tom to change full wheel sets.
  • 2 0
love the lizard doing push ups...
  • 1 0
That Lizard is Mad Dogging him hard aye! Came here to say that
  • 1 0
Love these videos with @Tombrad ! Absolute joy to watch and aspirational for me!
  • 2 0
Tom ya beauty! Thanks for keeping the fun in racing!
  • 1 0
@2:05 Did you punch a hole in your jersey and mount the GoPro through that? Nice, fairly incognito setup...
  • 2 0
Go on lad. Tom Bradshaw....best PB staffer by far.
  • 1 0
"solid mid pack and below results across the board" made my day, you legend! That's a thick exaggeration Smile
  • 1 0
Way to go must be a *first ever @ sea otter! Got it done!!!!
  • 1 0
 Way cool video and experience!
  • 1 0
 6th event- tire change
