Video: A Classic Squamish Slabs Lap With Remy Metailler

Apr 17, 2020
by Rémy Métailler

I took a lap down some classic slabs of Squamish. These trails are amazing and I'm very fortunate to be able to ride them. A special thanks to the builders and SORCA, the Squamish MTB association. To get your membership: sorca.ca

You can find the trails I rode here on Trailforks:

Entrails (built by Corey McKay and David Reid)
Boney Elbows (built by David Reid)
Hueso (built by Fred Roy)
Lower Gouranga

Our little industry is fragile during these times. Make sure to show some love to the brand you like. This video was filmed during Covid 19, which is why I rode alone and slower. Remember that risk 0 does not exist and that risk is relative, and right now more than ever if you live in a country where you can ride, you need to take it easy.

Thanks for watching, see you on the trails or on YouTube!

I appreciated the disclaimer. Remy's "low risk" riding is still well beyond what most of us can do on a good day, so it's good to have the reminder that he is taking it easy right now just like the rest of us.

This. I'm nowhere near his skill level, but I've dialed back on things that are out of my comfort zone. I think of the friends I know who have needed to visit their doctors for home accidents during this time. Love "Remember that risk 0 does not exist". So true.

I've ridden these trails and can confirm he makes them look easy. Much more difficult for us mortals!

I think Remy's videos should be deemed an Essential Service!! Thanks Remy for all your great content! These videos do a lot to keep moral up and keep me stoked to ride!

@remymetailler: Be careful Rémy, the last one I heard saying that sort of sentence bought an e-bike ;-)

Entrails to Bony Elbows was my first ever Alice Lakes lap. Funny how easy the Whale's Tail looks on GoPro...

Thanks Remy, this is a great reminder of how lucky we are to live near these amazing trails. Props on how you can give meaningful running commentary as you ride these gnarly trails.

No doubt. When I ride Entrails I'm huffin' to the point of incoherence.

Thanks for posting up the awesome edits @remymetailler ! Local guy riding local trails! Good clean entertainment in a time when the world needs a little pick me up! Keep them coming please!

Remy's "taking it easy" is my "full gas" on a good day

Remy, thank you for posting content that allows to virtually be out on the trails. This helps us stay connected with our sport while still being responsible. We are down to nearly nothing to ride in the greater Seattle area so watching content like yours keeps the stoke high and appreciate your obvious messaging in the videos about being responsible during these times.

"I don't really know who invented uphills, but they suck" preach it brother.

Salut Fred, merci beaucoup pour ton travail! J'adore Hueso! Good to know for the whale back/whale tail. Appreciate your reply! See you on the trails!

Awesome video and sick riding as usual... You know you're good when you just casually chat while riding the Entrails whaleback, that thing is pretty scary. Never mind the other slabs!

Man who is Dave Reid? A frigging legend !

Did I say Dave instead of David? Oops..

Where I live MTB is still open during COVID, but it's busier than usual. While riding yesterday I met another biker on a single track who was bombing it down hill, I was climbing up and I had the right away. He slammed onto his brakes and I was moving out of the way to maintain 6 feet of distance, but he was so impatient that he just went by me. How are all of you riding and maintaining distance to other riders/ hikers?

I've concluded I'll just have to ride early morning or nights to avoid people, but any other ways?
  • 12 2
I feel like people here are really doing good a job in Squamish. Most trails are one way, and the access roads are wide enough. No one is on a rush, people take their time and pass when it makes sense while keeping distance. I have not ran into problems, but I also avoid week ends (not that it makes much difference right now...), and ride trails with less traffic.

I can echo what Remy says about Pemberton. Everyone is super considerate and is making sure to go up 'Up' trails and down 'Down' trails. It can be busy in places where trails meet but everyone understands the need for patience thankfully and makes time to get out the way. Another minute here or there doesn't really make a difference for time as noone is in a rush, but can make a big difference for everyone's health.

Tokul has just been closed by Campbell Global, but I was riding there exclusively because it is so large of an area that you would rarely see anyone on a ride and the trails I like are one way so no flybys would happen. I would also ride early in the morning.

Just stay home in your safe space in your jammies and chill with Netflix
  • 1 0
@RCorlett: crap really? Did they post how long or how strict the closure is?
  • 1 0
@VFreehd: No, and I emailed them and no response. Both entrances are gated.
  • 2 1
@ashlemon: I see you rode Galbraith yesterday and have many other rides the last couple weeks. lol. I understand that some people are going to choose to stay home and not get out, but it is also perfectly fine for people to go riding solo or with a housemate, especially in a large area such as Tokul where there is never anyone congregating and trails are one way so flybys don't happen. Ride safely and make different choices on the trail. My wife is still training for her ultra marathon by running early in the morning and doing urban runs. Me doing a ride or her doing a run has way less chance of me catching or spreading coronavirus than going to buy groceries. There aren't shared touch surfaces, breathing the same air, etc. There is nothing illegal or irresponsible about getting exercise outdoors in a safe manner. If you want to bash people then do it to the riders poaching closed areas or going on group rides.

@RCorlett: Did you see the title of my ride? I suggest you go to the Strava activity and watch the Bitchute links in the description. Here, I'll make it easy for you...

@RCorlett: I suppose sarcasm is bashing, my bad. I fully support anyone ignoring orders not to ride, riding in groups, or riding closed areas, or even (gasp) questioning the entire narrative being shoved down our collective throats here. #emptyhospitals #filmyourhospital

@ashlemon: I encourage you to take a step back to get the bigger picture. Just a couple minutes into that video and already so many misguided statements, cut together from random videos to push an agenda. For example, "Broadening the curve" does not increase the number of people who will be infected. We have little to no control over the number of infections that will occur from this virus. You and I should want, like most others, to prevent the infections from occurring all at once. Yes, that means life as we knew it will not return for a long while but it's worth it to allow people who really need treatment to get treatment. Go ride your bike!

@VFreehd: The only thing in your statement I agree with is go ride your bike. In fact, go ride Tokul, Tiger or Raging River. I encourage you to watch Corbetts' complete video, despite how uncomfortable it makes you feel, and what you think you know about what is going on, and how wrong you think it is. I am quite sure, young man, that it is you who needs to try and understand the bigger picture at this point in history.

Let me guess you live in SoCal. I’ve seen the same. Just ride early, dbags usually like to sleep in.

That is some dope terrain, need another trip out there asap. After riding all over there is still one rock Roll down that takes it. You wouldn't believe it's in NYC but nothing close to 6 stories high vertical death roll anywhere I have seen besides this. Can't reveal it's name or location because most riders would die. Maybe 12 riders including me have hit it. Good luck finding it, somewhat of a urban legend, or is it!

Love his videos. And love that disclaimer! I'd say what is safe for you is a trip to the ER for me. LOL. Remy, come and ride in NM this summer.

Remy, enjoyed the recent vids, the detailed bike/component video and these sweet riding vids with trail intros and play by play. Definitely embrace the 1 way trail systems, keeps people safe when u want to drop the hammer, when not in a pandemic .

I really need this snow to melt faster up here!

 Look like a cat on a 170mm 29' bike ^^amazing!

I love how he says something like 'Slow down here' and yet the video evidence CONCLUSIVELY shows that he does not appear to slow down at all. Still...it's fun living vicariously right now.
  • 1 0
Nice video! Strangely, I sometimes find going a bit slower actually makes me a bit more accident prone! Quick question, what chest rig are you wearing in the videos? Stay safe!
  • 3 0
Amazing. Thanks for this. Just the cure for the quarantine blues.

Love these videos and respect him for the message he puts across at the start.

I believe Mr Reid currently currently goes by Crave Weed or perhaps Brave Steed. Either way, many of us might not live here without him. Thanks Dave.

Great riding and trails! So much dead fall though, just like my local trails in Sierra/Nevada range.

Man I want to go riding Frown
  • 1 0
 Same here, man!

Edit: And I'm supposed to go to Squamish/Whistler/Cumberland in July. Not too optimistic about that happening.

I knew it was my never ending quest for precision that caused me to ride slowly. Thanks for the validation Remy!
  • 2 2
Awesome! These tracks are some of my go to when it's dry, but are extremely high risk ever for pro. Just remember, going to the hospital right now is more dangerous than drinking water from the Ganges.

@remymetailler: Jonathan Desrosiers built Highway To Hell that you rode a section of, and 'someone' may have sneaked in the new section that connects to Hueso to avoid people crashing into each other at the bottom of the main Hueso slab......
  • 2 0
@wallheater: Oh I did not know that! Great fun way around. I enjoy it more than the actual slab.
  • 2 0
Feel free to check out the rest of H2H if you haven't. Shame all the woodwork rotted away but I felt the line deserved some love and a new style. I don't know who built the Guaranga to Hueso connector that you rode. I just added the new section at the end, and tweaked the cambered slab section a little.
  • 1 0
@wallheater: Awesome! Yes H2H got some work on not long ago! Thanks for the tips.

 "uphills suck"
truer words have never been spoken.

Jesus created e-bikes for people who can`t carry their cross uphills, do you believe it?
