Words: William Perherin

Well, I finally found the time to make what I've wanted to for a long time... My plan wasn’t to take over the work of all of these filmmakers but just highlight the best of it to make the ultimate edit of the iconic Sam Hill.

Credit goes to the filmmakers and the videos:

- Earthed (1-2-3-4-5) - Alex Rankin
- Les gets world champs 2004 – Descent-World.co.uk / Jon Beckett
- Wideopen – Thierry Neau
- 3Focus – Orpheus Productions
- Freecaster – Live (Extreme.com)
- Dirt tv edit – Orpheus productions
- Finally – Orpheus productions
- Foot out flat out 2 - Aaron Bartlett and Paul Roberts
- Made – Callum Swift
- Mtb cuts edit World Cup PMB / Vallnord
- The Entree – Black Phoenix Films
- 3 minutes gap – Clay Porter
- Specialized videos – John Lawlor
- Giant Factory off-road team Video
- Chain reaction cycle videos – Salva Moreno
- Trek World Racing videos – Vittorio Platania
- Red Bull tv – Live WC
- Legend Sam Hill – Mavic
- EWS Official Highlights videos – Jacob Gibbins, Chris Seager, Nico Turner
- Sam Hill Ews Manizales – Clay Porter
- Vital Raw videos – Lee Trumpore

I skipped some part of his career (like the Meribel win in 2014 and the World Champs run in Hafjell) for matching better with the video story.

Is this the bike equivalent of a porn compilation?

Asking for a friend.

 Rough doggy, that Sam Hill.

This is like the hyper-premium Brazzers shit you have to pay for. My brain doesn’t work after watching this. Unbelievably sick

He’s the Johnny Sins of mtb bro.

 Sam Hub

Always though Sam had an unfair advantage riding with no brakes on his bike. Seriously...does he use his brakes?

This awesome piece of work is missing many scenes from some mtb films of huge importance:
Drift 3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpiYpHJbIbs - includes Sam racing (& winning) 4X, winning his first world cups, talking - with subtitles, and many other shenanigans from SH, Rennie, Kovarik & co
Super 8 www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tXXXGhBRKc
Super 8 Illusionary Lines www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxvGK0NC35Q
I think these were all aussie made, not sure.
If you guys haven't seen those, you just have to!
Great music also.

But, I mean, 40 min of Sam Hill... Definitely bike porn Big Grin
  • 3 0
@chmurka3rg: 100% Agreed! I still own all those movies on DVD and still enjoy watching them. There amazing! Especially the first riding scene in Drift 3. Epic! (I think it was the Cairns Australia DH scene)
Also, Clay Porters "Hypnosis" DH film was amazing too.
  • 1 0
Awesome! Just missing his all out drifts from the movie Hypnosis. (Couldn't find on youtube)

This video just saved me a few thousand pounds. I’d convinced myself I needed a new bike with modern geometry, but the first few minutes of the video told me to shut up and run what yer brung...

yeah, despite i pretty much have all the vids lying around somewhere, i forgot how fast the top guys were already going in 2002
  • 1 0
 @aps62 : But......But....... New stuff
  • 70 0
Hearing Warners unfiltered commentary through these clips was just as all-time as watching the legend himself! Didn't I hear him say at some point "faster than a dog on a rampage with two dicks"? Freaking hilarious, god i miss those quotes.
  • 36 0
 Freecaster Warner was the best
  • 3 0
 @laom33 yup, fuggin classic...
  • 6 0
He definitely did. Came here to post it if no one else had. "He's on a rampage like a dog with two dicks. Hes tearing this mountain apart." That is the greatest comment in the history of sports commentating!
  • 2 0
 sad he got streamlined
  • 5 0
@optimumnotmaximum: not sad for his bank account
  • 4 2
Come one guys, the sport has matured and he has matured along with it. I used to love the Freecaster days and especially the one liners, but Rob says himself that he's a better commentator now.
  • 6 1
@excavator666: He sure is, he sometimes was pretty much all over the place, but he lost a great part of his personal style too. I think a sport "maturing" is not always something good too, i am still happy about DH not beeing an Olympic discipline. And I dont think a matured mainstreamsport would help the athletes getting more money. DH and EWS already sell a lot of (E-) Mountainbikes, wages of not top 20 athletes are still a joke, companies seem to value a top 30 racer less than an average salesdude, thats how it is.
  • 2 0
had to hit pause to LOL! 2 dick dog ! hahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha

 @panchoy: #FreeWarner

This is why Sam Hill is my all time favorite rider. No matter the track or the conditions, he was flat out giving 110% every single race. Sucks he doesn't race downhill anymore but as he said is the past the tracks are getting boring. So glade he is back into loving the sport that he loves to do.
  • 2 0
He said he is going to be racing a few world cups this year on the new Nukeproof Dissent!
  • 31 0
Serious effort putting this together. Thanks for your hard work and laborious editing!

I can't believe I just watched 37 mins of Sam Hill... More More More. Loved every minute of it. Pure legend!
  • 14 0
Awesome. The only thing I'd say is missing is garbanzo DH win and world champs on the trail bike.
  • 5 2
Not to nitpick but the Mega ain’t exactly a trail bike

  • 7 0
This is outstanding! Thank you so much for your time in putting this together!
  • 7 0
True, the new tracks look like highways
  • 6 0
This beats all the best runs of last decade in the other article. Champery in unreal conditions is mint.
  • 6 0
He's so damn fast! A masterpiece, William - great job! Please do another vid on someone else - Minnaar?
  • 13 0
I hope to do one on Minnaar or Hart, it's crazy the amount of time needed, it's been a almost non stop 2/3 weeks of work (after job, with 1 week off, cause I was freaking out cutting all the stuff haha), If it's not for a Sam's video, I probably never finished it lol. now it's gonna be easier cause I have already ton off movie in stock
  • 1 0
@sevenup: Dude, you did an awesome job! I was thinking the same thing - how much time you spent in getting video, arranging it, editing, etc... Pure passion and love for the sport. They'll certainly be a lot on Greg 's career. Danny is still relatively young. Maybe consider Peaty?
  • 5 0
@neimbc: yes it's also what I thinking about Danny. Peaty it would be a graal, whole life dedicated for mtb, he had a lots of ups and downs in his career, and like gwin a big struggle with world champ' but a happy end with that (all is not done for gwin to)
  • 1 0
 @sevenup: Cheers you champion!
  • 1 0
@sevenup Thanks for this! Any chance you can post the soundtrack you used? Unfortunately have a couple of these songs stuck in my head now and can't find them. Got to watch Sam at Northstar this summer. Picked some rowdy sections to watch, Sam was visibly faster than all but a couple other riders. He's still got it in spades.

Anyone remember when Sam Hill won the Red Bull Ride freeride competition against all the best freeriders and racers at the time (Klassen, Vanderham, Gracia, Rennie, etc.) when he was just 17?

  • 3 1
Wow just wow. The flat pedal riding style is so entirely different compared to clips. There’s such a moto influence to it. Watching him ride on the back wheel and keep the bike so planted is simply amazing. Hill is the king.
  • 5 0
Thanks dude for putting that together! Sam the master of the drift! Sensational!!
  • 4 0
i do not have 37 mins to watch this now but maybe just a quick peek, well so i thought. my eyes were glued and my brain was stuck glitching in holy fuck mode. so rad.
  • 2 0
Thank you so much for compiling all this footage. It was so great to relive all these shots from growing up watching Sam Hill since 04/05 years. Only thing I would say is wish you lowered the music volume during the Rob Warner commentary pieces! Sam Hill will always be the Greatest rider in my opinion.
  • 5 0
Watching Sam Hill tear up after his win in Mont Saint-Anne was a remarkable moment in DH. Thanks for the ride Sam.
  • 3 0
I had never seen a few parts of that video. The crash footage from Champery. The podium at Pile where blasts Brendog in the face. The Specialized team was my favorite, and still is 3 of my favorite riders today.
  • 2 0
Where do i start, top compilation that, memories of Sam back in the day and a reminder of the awesome Earthed series.
Who else has been at the top of their game this long? Greg is the only one i can think of, sure they have both had less than stellar seasons but here we are rolling into 2020 and they will be right there.
Sam is the man and that style, timeless.
  • 2 0
Just incredible! Huge amount of effort gone into this edit, you have gifted us well this Christmas, thanks dude!
Those Pinkbike comments from 2013: BRUTAL.
Such respect for Sam to be in the industry for so long with come back after come back, a true champion. Sam really is the MTB king, give him the crown!
The old school tracks were the best, hope EWS doesn’t go the way of DHI. Rough and raw tracks keep the soul of MTB alive!

 Anybody else miss Ironhorse Sundays?
  • 1 0
I bought a Mk III in 07. Those Iron Horse DW links were great bikes.
  • 2 0
Sam's bike control is mesmerising to watch, the way he makes the bike dance around underneath him. Rarely manhandles, the bike just flows. Easily my favourite rider of all time.
  • 3 0
Great movie but sad there's no image of his last wc dh win in Meribel (august 2014) . I was here one week before my wedding, best gift ever , thank you Sam, you're the best.

  • 1 0
@aps62: haha made me laugh, you're 100% right
  • 3 0
HAHA I work in the wine industry and someone gave him a sword on the podium to saber that bottle of champagne. He just smashed the whole top of the bottle off. Amazing.
  • 4 0
2009 "Public Execution" with a top of podium in Palmer's gold jacket. This dude! Savant.
  • 1 0
Epic Edit, captivating every second for 37 mins. Haven't seen anything at this level for a very long time! Thank You to the producers, Sam, Rob, Iron Horse, All those who have competed with....the list goes on...At this point I am truly speechless!
  • 1 0
That was sick - thanks to the editor.

Took me a while to get through it all (5 mins at a time while commuting) but so great to have his professional career well documented.

When Sam Hill is on, he is a force of nature. Amazing to watch
  • 1 0
I love watching Sam Hill ride. Wide open all the time. It's like he doesn't even pay attention to the trail. He's just going to take the shortest, fastest line between the tape.
  • 2 0
If this doesn’t make you want to go ride your bike then go away.

Sam Hill has been a legend since day 1, such an amazing video. Well done
  • 2 0
What a destiny for a "Hill" guy! Sam Mountain is the the future? Too bad my english don't allow me to do better joke... Awesome compilation anyway
  • 1 0
Guess what Sam?it turn out exactly that thing ,I don’t have any idols, but I like people like you that are just simple and honored, and thst is a rare thing this days ,well done tribute video to a great racer.

Γεια σου Τάκη! Χαιρετίσματα στη Χαλκίδα!
Back in 2006-07 we were shredding down the mountains on Dirfys, Naousa, Veria GR, trying to achieve maybe 1/100th (or 1/1000th) of Sam Hills' skills... with not much success...
A friend once said: 'You have to be Australian to go faster..."
Seems to be true, since Sam is still beating everybody at EWS...
At least, as a tribute to Sam Hill, I finally bought a Nukeproof Scalp last summer (for my son, I am too old for this shit...). 26 in of course.
Awesome video!!
  • 1 0
@Lio22: As an Aussie, I wish that was true for me ahhaha.
  • 2 0
Awesome. Now I'm going to have to bust out all of my Earthed vids, Clay Porter vids, and Freecaster vids. I forgot how good all of that old footage was.
  • 1 0
In literature 'Sam Hill' is the euphemism for the devil, pretty much all of the DH and now the EWS scene for years now have been being chased by the devil!
  • 1 0
The best video edit ever. I am a huge fan of Sam, adore what he does for the whole MTB community and his style is more than unoque. Flat pedals win medals!
  • 3 0
Almost like the McRae of dh, unreal to watch & flat out everywhere
  • 1 0
William Perherin, props to you for making this. what a treat. I got into mountain biking around 2011 and it was great to see all the coverage from before that. Kudos to you
  • 1 0
Too fast, and to think he's on 26" wheels and not even using modern geo bikes. Sam Hill's the best ever...
