Video: Amaury Pierron's Winning Run - Les Gets World Cup DH 2019

Jul 15, 2019
by Ed Spratt

Amaury Pierron was in a league of his own all weekend and his race run that was over two seconds faster than second-place rider Loic Bruni is something else. This is a masterclass in how to ride the Les Gets course.

The way he sends it straight into the rut 55 seconds into the video is insane (most of the run is, but this is particularly insane).
  • + 19
 Surgical precision right there
  • + 4
@brodoyouevenbike: yeh, in his interview with Ben Cathro on Pinkbike's YouTube channel, he said he felt like he nearly died twice in the run, I'm guessing that was one of them. I was turtle heading the whole run just watching! Salute
  • + 18
@hgardner: ok, there are a few things that are not right with this video.
are we watching DH or moto GP
not one mistake
extremely fast

Congratulations Amaury !!!!!!!!! on a PERFECT RUN

Long live DH Racing.

Cheers

Well don’t know what’s more insane the run or the media rumble at the end - by the way can anyone translate into proper English please? Peeeep peep peeeep peep
  • + 6
@ferenooo: ``Whaoooooo!!! Putain de merde!!!! Whoooohooo!! Putain!!!! Wooooo!!! Merci!!!

It`s not proper english but you`ve got to deal with that Smile
  • + 6
@hgardner: also, he clipped a post with his left hand at 2:30, and with his right hand at 2:36, must have been pretty scary at 60 km/h
  • + 69
If you dont unintentionally have a massive grin at his reaction to 1st place when crossing the line then you need help. The atmosphere at the end of that race looked absolutely incredible. Massive well done!
  • + 59
Maybe im biased but can you imagine this in ANY other sports?? The last guy is killing it and literally all his opponents are going crazy about it. Few years back when I was watching DH races I allways thought that this might go away when the sport becomes more professional, more money involved, etc. But it didn't. What a sport. DH I love you.
  • + 8
@laubry: Hard enduro motorcycle is like that. Follow american Supercross/ motocross, and they can't even look at each other.

His reaction at the end. . . .teared me up with joy for him.
  • + 2
No doubt, for me that was highly satisfying to watch.
  • + 37
@laubry: another funny thing is Troy Brosnan singing the French national anthem on the podium. It’s like he’s been on the podium so much over the last two years to Frenchie winners he’s got their anthem down pat. Can’t wait to see another Troy win. In fact there’s at least 25 riders I want to see win. Such a cool sport.
  • + 6
@dicky21: I confirm it was absolutely amazing how the atmosphere was at the finish line !
I first thought the track was crap but for once, Les Gets did a serious and very good job. I'm glad my first WC (as spectator) was that one, in my local region.
  • + 3
 @laubry: Well said.
  • + 1
@fodermonk: Totally different culture when you are really just racing the clock.
  • + 3
@Adam43: Not exactly. Alpine ski racing is not nearly this friendly, and it is against the clock.
  • + 1
@Adam43: yeah that's what I thought at first but then look at ski racing, gymnastics, bob and skelleton racing, Rally racing, horse jumping (is it even called like this? lol)whatever those guys are definetly not stoked for eachother like they are in DH.
  • + 2
@laubry: in skiing (freeride world tour) they are usually quite friendly at the end of each run. In skateboarding contest too. not at the level we see in DH but it's worth mentioning.
  • + 1
@zede: Yes you're right. I've never seen a skateboard event but last winter i watched the freeride event in Verbier on redbull tv and they were absolutely hyped for their opponents. Thx for bringing up the idea, will watch it again now Smile
  • + 44
This run was checkers or wreckers for sure.
  • + 41
Industry insider - Pierron has had a falling out with his brake sponsor, and is refusing to use them until this dispute is resolved.
  • + 38
This is definitely one for the history books, just like Danny's run down Champery.
  • + 5
I think few races this year are like that memorable, fuck me i was on my toes all the way watching tem race fort bill
  • + 27
This run is incredible and Amaury and the Frenchies in general are killing it this year. But at least for me, Dannys run is something else. I mean have you ever been to Champery WC Track? For me it's just simply not imaginable to ride this track (old line, new line is so much easier now) like this IN THE F*CKING POURING RAIN. I mean in the end it will always be a taste related question and it might not even be important but for me Dannys Champery Run will be untouched for a long long while. No disrespect to all the others now Amaury and also Gwin had some sensational runs.
  • + 1
@laubry: for sure the greatest run I have ever seen tup
  • + 7
Danny's World Champs run and Gwins chainless win are 2 videos that I watch every time it shows up on my youtube recommended or are shared on facebook. There's a few others I will occasionally watch but those 2 runs are some of the greatest of all time. They've just stuck with me
  • + 6
Danny's run was one of the greats but let's not forget Sam Hill owns Champery still... www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmvDk8fcheI

Also Val di Sole www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVwvXKhQvkE
  • + 6
@dirtjumper771: Don’t forget Gwin’s MSA run in a Monsoon youtu.be/PcS1bNSSmTU alongside Danny’s run, this is what I watch over and over.
  • + 0
Nah, just another fast frenchi win.
  • + 2
Danny`s run in Champery was more than surrealistic, it was THE run. I watched it so many times to try to understand... but I`ve never understood Smile
  • + 5
@Franzzz: The people who raced Sam in Champery *while it was raining* were 25+ seconds off his time. Danny's time was less than 12 seconds and he didn't have a crash.
  • + 3
Gwin Mont Saint Anne where he smoked everyone who had a dryer course is up there too insane run
  • + 1
The Gwinner smashing everyone by 8 seconds at VDS still blows my mind. That's maybe the cleanest run I've ever seen, as close to perfect as you can get.
  • + 32
Amaury, those things under your fingers are called brakes. You're welcome to use them! ...or not.
  • + 21
He took Myriam Nicole's words seriously.
  • + 15
 wouldnt you..?
  • + 7
 yep. all day.
  • + 1
 What did she say?
  • + 8
 @sionr644: send it brah
  • + 1
 @sionr644: Watch the post-race interview.
  • + 17
There is such a fine line between success and EPIC failure at those race speeds.
  • + 14
Those angled cornering knobs on the magic Mary really showed why they're an advantage in high speed cornering. This crazy run was a pretty good marketing moment for schwalbe.
  • + 8
I had to pause and change the quality to 1080p (ya know because it auto plays at 480...shit internet) but I thought I changed the play speed to fast...seemed like the whole thing was playing at 2x speed. Holy shit! This run will be remembered for years.
  • + 1
 Well done. I LOL'd.
  • + 8
GROUNDBRAKING. this was just next level. My jaw dropped even more than on Gwin's wet MSA run last year. I felt I just don't know anymore...the first part in the grass gets you tunnel vision as a spectator...mindbending!!!
  • + 10
 Can't compute. Much fast.
  • + 4
Imagine some how finding your self going that fast during a run, I would just explode straight through the next corner and cart wheel down the hill man!
  • + 9
Perfect race! spectacular. It would be interesting to understand when and how much brakes, like telemetry in F1.
  • + 9
Like maybe once, going into the woods.
  • + 9
Panic mode engaged at 1:06. "Ah ... putain! "
  • + 1
Ha. I caught that too. A new hole was forming at the edge of the pavement, right?
  • + 8
Post race he said he almost died twice... Damn if I can tell where!
  • + 2
Perhaps he meant between the start and the end of the race. Twice!
  • + 3
I was thinking of that comment the second time I watched and I think :21 counts as one.
  • + 5
I don't think that guy and I are part of the same species, let alone participants in the same sport! How the hell is any of that even possible!?
  • + 7
French Crowd for the medal !
  • + 6
Waiting for the "Nerding Out" article..
  • + 5
Video looks friggin speed up! Unreal speed
  • + 2
where are you "Speed Police".!!? i want your conspiracy theories.. haha..

P"
  • + 4
Beautiful win Frenches, yes. Minaar and Gwin are reloading. The damn Bat signal not working!
  • + 4
Amazing run. His ability to place the bike precisely where he wanted is next level!
  • + 1
yeah man just flawless. there's a blue pole/gate he comes SO close to clipping near the end. Hairy ragged smelly edge!
  • + 1
Amazing run, one of the top 10 greatest runs in DH history. One question, the young kid that can NOT let go of him, the gnarliest hug ever, who is that kid? lil brother? super fan? Just curious. What a run, im gonna go out and try and ride 1/10th that speed.
  • - 2
one of the 10 greatest of all time? ehhhh
  • + 4
If you just watch 3:02 to 3:10 it looks and sounds like he is being attacked.
  • + 4
hanging on by a thin thread there. proper flat out racing. Kudos!!!
  • + 3
Looked like he was so on the edge of everything and still managed to put it together with no mistakes. Amazing run!
  • + 3
Jean Girards screaming after the finish sounded like Gregory being attacked by Alsatians.
  • + 2
He won because at the ramp he avoided the rubber but went on the slicker wood of the edge, man that was premeditated!
  • + 2
Soo Faast first turns... RedBull you forgot to gave him this helmet... Wink
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFwrGa6IswY
  • + 2
It takes me longer to make a coffee than he took to get down that mountain. Jebus
  • + 3
Balls out! I was exhausted after watching Pierron's run. Legendary stuff.
  • + 3
Inconceivable! No one is more fun to watch in the circuit right now.
  • + 2
f*ckin nazzers!!! did he even brake at all?? off the charts, hats/berets off
  • + 3
Who put the video in x2 ?
  • + 2
Id dont know why they have those oversized brake mounts, he really didnt appear to use them. Holy Jibbers that was fast.
  • + 2
Incredible POV to watch ! The run, the instant celebration with a dozen of people ! What a time to be alive !
  • + 4
 The frenchie can DRIVE.
  • + 4
 F*CKING HELL!
  • + 2
Frenchies haven´t been this mad since Napoleon´s times.... crazy run by Pierron
  • + 1
Well can see that you changed it, as was not a French winner on Bastille day, also wonder how many of the comments on hear are deleted?
  • + 1
Absolutely knows how to utilize a track to it's fullest! I found my head bobbing and weaving with him through the corners.
  • + 2
The real question is... Did he jump further than the pole?
  • + 1
Oh man! The speed, the cheering, the celebration! Can you imagine what that must feel like!
  • + 1
That was like a mix of Bruni and Greenland’s runs.
120%. Best run of the year. Thought I was watching the world champs.
  • + 3
 Fast that one
  • + 2
Now you know what is a "French line"... Wink
  • + 2
Precision, lots of it. Well deserved victory!
  • + 1
Holy shit balls! Full gas and pin point perfect. Don't know the guy but seems like no nicer guy to win either.
  • + 1
Did his mechanic took the big brakes off and put 140mm rear and 160mm front? That is a way of explaning how fast he went!
  • + 2
Bruni’s run looked tame in comparison. This was off the friggin chain.
  • + 5
" you ride chainless too? Well I ride brakeless, foo."
  • + 2
 Fully committed! So so awesome!
  • + 1
It's a shame the GoPro POP videos look so slow! Haha! Now imagine what that looked like from his eyes!
  • + 2
 FAST
  • + 1
Change the tittle to "Dassault Rafale low flying in the French Alps"
  • + 1
the most amazing mtb video ever seen. Instantaneous.
  • + 1
Hanging on for dear life... amazing!
  • + 1
Completely LIT!!! top to bottom... P'
  • + 1
Looks like a guided missile POV. Pure insanity
  • + 1
Slow down! I can't see what's happening! Big Grin
  • + 1
that jump INTO a rut leaned over at 0:55 was siiick
  • + 2
The rut had to bend and move out of the way due to the force which he attacked it.
  • + 1
That was about as cool as it gets right there
  • + 1
I was there. Fu...g insane!!! Met him today in morzine. He is a niceguy
  • + 1
I should know better than to visit Pinkbike on a Monday. Goddamnit.
  • + 1
Claudio said it that's proper drifting right there!
  • + 0
Not one mistake the whole run at that speed. i.redd.it/ybmklq2exj131.jpg
  • + 1
 Holy shit that's quick!
