Video & Photo Epic: British National 4X Championships

Aug 5, 2021
by Nick Bentley

The last of the UK National Championships to be held in 2021 took place this weekend with the 4x National Championships taking place at Redhill Extreme in the Forest of Dean, UK. This classic track produced a different challenge this year with heavy rain in the run up to the event meaning the track began the day slow and sticky, thankfully conditions improved throughout the day.

with the way new bikes are now you can competitively race any level of 4x on most types of bike. i race a 160/170mm enduro bike and i think it needs to be promoted that you don't need a specific 4x bike at all

I always felt the 4X biking would be a perfect Olympic sport. We have 4X snowboarding, and it doesn't need a full XC type mountain, and is a fantastic spectator sport.

@alexey-t: chill mate - its just people always post stuff like that , quoting common PB topics .
With first post comes great responsibility- you failed thats all.

Fantastic photos. It is cool seeing people of different ages competing on different bikes/wheel sizes. It doesn't matter as long as you are having fun.
Well done SB96 on another national title. Those goggles and helmet are so dialled!

Hope this kind of racing takes off again.. I would love to try it, and it looks insanely fun.

 Next Olympics should include:

1. Downhill
2. 4 cross (or even better bring back Dual slalom)
3. Trials challenges

XC is good, but needs more coverage of mountain bikes!

Such a great day of racing. I'm glad it stayed fast. There's loads of shoutouts I could make but most of those went out on the mic. It was simply a top notch day of bikes and fun!

@razor: Rob Escott? Aka awesome-o-4000? He's still riding, works in the bike industry now.

I recognise your M3 and a few of the photos on your profile, gotta say I'm envious of the Keewee CromoEight! They still look good!

I'm glad there's a bunch of us still riding nearly twenty years on, we keep bumping into people from the mid 2000's, it's fantastic!
  • 1 0
@themop: yep, that Rob. Still bump into him every so often. Had a few years not riding following kids but been back in the saddle for a few years now. Still a few of the old SDH lot lurking on STW too.

It’s a shame 4x isn’t more popular, there’s no tracks here around Madrid. I would deffo be into it if it came around and started up more.

4X looks more like old school BMX than BMX is today. Ruff dirt tracks, knobby tires. Just fewer riders per Heat.
I don't when they took the "MX" out of BMX but these days it looks more like BLPL, Bicycle Lumpy Parking Lot racing.
I'd love to see 4X take off.
