Video & Race Report: Eastern States Cup Showdown - Powder Ridge, CT

Oct 6, 2021
by Eastern States Cup

It's back to Powder Ridge for our final Box Components Showdown and Outbound Lighting Night Enduro of the season. At just 550 vertical feet, it isn't the biggest hill we race on but it's still quite demanding on rider and bike, thanks to its jagged rocks. With such short tracks, you've got to have a mostly perfect run to even have a shot at a podium position. Our Downhill Pro men's class top five were all within two seconds of each other, everyone was pinned this weekend trying to maximize points with just one more race after this.

The Ridge may be small but its rocks and roots are mighty.

Majestic CT wildlife.

Powder Ridge held their annual Oktoberfest Saturday night, so the vibe was high all around this weekend.

Outbound Lighting Night Enduro

5:30pm racers meetings are a little different than we're used to, but all the rules are the same.

Kate's Real Food U12 class raring to go.

No lifts for this one, it's pedals only for all five stages. Odin Adolphson powers up the climb, he had a solid night with second place in the 40-49 men's class despite a few bobbles.

Adrian Hayden was on a heater with three stage wins but unfortunately had a hard crash on the final stage which pushed him back to fifth place for the Pro Men.

Spooky season, ESC style on the Stage 1 chip out.

Ever tried fixing spoke tension in the dark?

Matt Sawin lights the way to the next stage.

One last rip for the Motorex Ebike class this year. Give it up for your 2021 top three: 2nd - Kyle Wolmer, 1st - Dustin Geis, 3rd - Larry Sereduck

Isabel Georgian put together her best race of the year under the lights, second place for the Pro ladies.

Kale Cushman makes it four Pro Womens class wins in a row, taking every stage with a final race time of 11:09. She was also able to muster up enough energy to take third place in Sunday's Downhill. "I don't do a lot of night riding - so racing in the dark is definitely intimidating! Hitting gaps and drops where you're in the air before the landings emerge into the light... it's kind of hilarious and scary at the same time - hats off to everyone that raced and made it through to the finish! Weather was perfect and tracks in great condition - and the party and music at the base lodge kept the energy for everyone flowing late into the night - such a fun event!"

Enduro Pro Women: 2nd - Isabel Georgian, 1st - Kale Cushman, 3rd - Katlin Parenteau

Kaylen Ballantyne put down some fast runs to earn second place, his best Pro result to date.

Matt Sebas is a regular on the Pro Mens podium but hasn't won a race since the first round of 2021. He was able to get it done in the dark at Powder, with a pair of stage wins and a margin of nearly 30 seconds. "I love racing these full pedal night events! Tracks were all really fun and a bit slick in some of the deep wooded corners. Took me a few slide outs in practice to calibrate to the clay dirt. Managed to keep my runs pretty clean and smooth for the most part and very happy to come away with the win."

Enduro Pro Men: 2nd - Kaylen Ballantyne, 1st - Matt Sebas, 3rd - Zeke Neubauer

Intense Downhill

Right into chunky rock hucks at the top of the course, Lucas Dedora squeaked out the U15 win by just .23 seconds.

ProBuilds Racing's youngest member Carson Morgan was back on top of the Kate's Kids class podium this weekend.

Felipe Sousa transitions from light ski trail to dark woods, he would go on to take his third Expert 30-39 win of the season.

Managing speed and control is quite the balancing act on this short course, Nicholas Johnson held on to take the Expert 19-29 win by 1.56 seconds.

It's been five years since we've seen Phil Kmetz in the Maxxis ESC start gate, but he's right back on the Pro box with fourth place this weekend.

Eli Gadbois scrubs speed before entering one of the final woods sections, he would take second place for the Junior Experts.

Amateur 19-29 class winner Anthony Lapedota zooms through the CT woods.

Second place for Abby Ronca, who has yet to finish outside the Pro Women's top two this season.

Kristin Lenart lead the Pro ladies as she took her second win of the season with a final race time of 1:47.13. "My main focus coming into Powder Ridge was a full reset after the front flat at Blue and poor showing at Jiminy. I was focused on having fun and pushing hard...so thankful to find the top step and grab a bit of redemption! As always thanks to all those that cheer me on, it truly helps keep me full throttle!"

DH Pro Women: 4th - Mazie Hayden, 2nd - Abby Ronca, 1st - Kristin Lenart, 3rd - Kale Cushman, 5th - Isabel Georgian

Defiant Racing's young gun Andrew Driscoll goes P3, one better than his first Pro race.

Steve Estabrook was just .48 off the win and is currently tied with Max Morgan for the overall title heading into Finals at Mountain Creek.

Max Morgan put his Santa Cruz on a top step surrounded by GT's, with a final race time of 1:33.63. "With only a few races left in the year, I’ve been focusing on finishing strong and being at my best. The track at Powder Ridge left no room for any mistakes and led to some close racing. It always feels good to get a win and I was happy to be on the right side of the clock this time. Thank you to Santa Cruz Bicycles, my sponsors, and my wife Melanie for their support. One more to go in just a few weeks!"

DH Pro Men: 4th - Phil Kmetz, 2nd - Steve Estabrook, 1st - Max Morgan, 3rd - Andrew Driscoll, 5th - Dylan Conte

Box Components Showdown winners who endured both events this weekend and beat the most people in their respective classes.

Just one more race left to decide the 2021 overall series champions, we'll see you at Mountain Creek! Bring extra tires, extra rims...heck, bring an extra bike if you have one.
