@tuskenraider: ya f*ck that guy, worked years to get an opportunity like that just to have it ripped away from clipping a tree branch! what a crybaby! How dare you get upset for 10 minutes in an interview that they wanted you to show emotion and realness in. Huge softy if you ask me hahahahah race me bro

@Bvanunen: careful - he’s from Illinois and he rides a niner

@Bvanunen: Don't listen to these jealous idiots bro. Their generation bottled everything up and then channeled that energy into beating their wives and just being miserable pricks to everyone. You didn't deserve to be sent home, but given the heart you showed to even attempt racing with those injures, I'm sure you're gonna bounce back stronger.

Man the one girl could barely ride down some of the trails let alone ride them at pace... When a '30k and a pro contract' is on the line there is no reason she should be in the competition after seeing that. That may sound harsh but seriously, if you've ever ridden big white you will know where I'm coming from here, its not an overly technical park. Her positive attitude, being appreciative of the opportunity etc aside, her riding ability is not on the same level as the rest of the competitors by a long shot.

@FUbob: I'm thinking you don't have any friends and this is as close as you get to interaction with people. Hint: you're doing it wrong. Douchebag.
  • 9 2
@FUbob: If you watch the video, you'll see that Brody is crying because of relief, joy, elation, and pride at his 2nd place performance. So yes, he's crying, but there's more to it. If you look into why he's crying, you'll see a deeper story and one you might very well agree with.

The rhetoric that crying = weakness is really a fallacy in my opinion. The reality is that each person has the entire range of human emotions, and most of us just display the socially appropriate ones (anger, happiness are the most common). It takes true strength to accept the entirety of human emotion, not just the ones we like, or support our persona. Because denial, well, that would just be weak, wouldn't it?

Ridiculing an entire generation too, I'm curious as to why you think that, can you explain? That's like, wishing doom on the entire world after you kicked the bucket. It's shooting humanity in the foot imo. This generation's done a ton of incredible things already, and they'll become leaders inheriting the world after we're dead and gone. I'm personally stoked on them and hope they do a better job than we did Smile

At any rate, posting this in hopes of sparking a legitimately thoughtful discussion that could expand my mind and not getting a flippant response.

A few people have already mentioned it, but Brody commented on Youtube that it took him over a month to heal up enough to ride again after leaving the show, so it's pretty likely that he got sent off because he wouldn't have been able to keep competing safely, not because the judges actually thought he was the worst.
  • 3 1
so youre telling me pb made a mistake and allowed him to compete despite his condition and then just 'eliminated' the guy and noone mentioned he shouldnt have been riding in a 1st place, just pretended its all cool and he was too poor?

gotta love television
  • 62 2
Spoiler alert.... OMG... I can't believe that they made Katniss Everdeen fight off other riders with a sawn-off chainring crank arm axe until there was only one survivor. Good job she was from the tough-as-nails Rampage District.

  • 45 0
That elimination speech was sadistic , built up hope and then slammed him to the ground.
  • 9 6
 Yes it was.

I think that the elimination would benefit hugely from ‘audience vote’ - many many experienced riders (on here) making a collective judgement about the rank order. This is based on really good theory in educational assessment - Thurston’s work in the 1930s. I think the results for the last academy and this one re elimination would have been very different and far more valid. And why not keep all the contestants in for many more episodes and then start eliminating?
  • 61 0
Cam is a legend! Came into the back after and was like "f*ck that was not fun, I felt like a d*ck" hahahaha, i said "Cam its all good bro, no stress"
  • 3 0
@Bvanunen: Good to hear the reality of what went down, I forgot that this is entertainment.
  • 3 1
@Bvanunen: I'll be honest - I assumed the drama was fake for the show and the behind the scenes they'd talked to you and decided it was too bad an injury for you to carry on. Was that not the case?
  • 6 0
@vercorin1: I'm fairly certain the entire show is shot in the period of a week or two. To have eliminations based on audience votes, they'd have to be shooting the show in sync with when the episodes are released, and they'd have to be able to edit and finish episodes FAST. Extending the shooting schedule like 4X and requiring a much tighter editing turnaround would make it a way, WAY more expensive show to produce.
  • 1 0
@charliewentoutside: maybe a "second chance" vote from the audience, for inclusion in the next season's competition.
  • 34 0
Shame they're still going with the eliminations instead of letting all 10 battle it out in all challenges. I get that it probably drives clicks / comments and is entertaining for some, but seeing the progress over the weeks for all contestants would feel more like an actual Academy.
  • 7 0
That would be a fantastic format! Give the riders a chance to learn and grow!!
  • 2 0
 Agreed.
  • 2 0
Yup that.... They should keep all riders in for the full duration of the show, it can then be based upon who improves as well... You never know, the first person home could end up being the best after time, tuition, learning, riding... but they don't get the chance. Elimination is pointless... we want to see riding.
  • 2 0
@weeksy59: Especially since I believe all the riders stay there for the duration of the taping, anyway.
  • 35 3
No, not Brody. Dam I'm gona miss those "come to bed eyes".! We all know who should have gone, I mean you gott'a be able to race your bike as the rule 101 surely?

Great job PB. After being a synic about your show in Series 1, I know appreciate that you have provided/are providing a fantastic opportunities to up ad coming rides, ALL of whom have delivered at the the EWS. And there's Cam McCaull, I mean how cool is that.

Favorite line - Cam:" what were you doing Kate when you were 19" Kate: "eerrrr, drinking"

I already thought Brody put in a stand-up effort...really, only the person with the pain can tell you how much it really hurts. Add in the roller coaster of getting the emergency call up after missing the cut because someone else was injured and couldn't take the spot and then getting it from a tree yourself and going out the same way, well, f*ck, batman. Reading some of what Brody has said here and folding that all into the totality, I think Brody is a stand-up guy (and stands up for himself), and the judges made the right call that they were able to wrap up in an elimination instead of having a blank spot and another rider gone.

I think like some of the other non-winners, Brody will carve out a spot for himself.

Unrelated, the outro trash talk with "there's a race going on and you're not in it" has me itching to see a hockey fight in the next episode. Top-tier smack.

Now that Rampage is over, we are turning our focus to PB Academy judging.
  • 13 0
I would try not take this stuff too seriously. It is just entertainment. If hiring doctors, scientists, etc were like a reality MTB television show there would be a problem. Ultimately, it is just hiring mountain bikers in the most amusing way humanly possible. If they have some particular agenda in keeping gender ratios fixed, so be it -- I have zero control over that -- advertisers do maybe. Either-way, enjoy it and have fun. I doubt Amanda will be around much longer if she keeps a gap around that big anyhow.
  • 3 2
Disagree! This isn't big brother or survivor. These are young aspiring professional riders looking for an opportunity to kick-start their career. It's not make or break for them - but getting a full season pro deal is a huge carrot! Pinkbike should also maybe review their due diligence on how they recruit the participants. This would be much more exciting viewing if we had 8 legitimate potential pro racers battling each other! Seems each year 1 or 2 weekend warriors seems to get in.
  • 2 0
@ponyboy24: “getting a full season pro deal…” that is a good point. This helps them build a platform. Perhaps similar to how chefs get lots of show that boost their careers.

After thinking about this a bit more, given the production timetable (maybe a week or two) I wonder if Brody was pretty hurt so two weeks pushing it would eventually hurt the poor guy — that would be a legitimate concern for the show as well. His performance might not show his true strength so locking up a pro deal with all his heart would not maybe be enough if he couldn’t be fastest.
  • 2 1
@penguinni: then vote him out based on that logic. Don't make a drama about his performance being the reason he was kicked out.
  • 19 3
Katie Burrell is literally saving mtb culture.
  • 10 0
Love that everyone is so stoked on this.

Just an observation. These riders aren't pros...but they dream to be. They signed up for this opportunity because they probably read the same articles we do on Pinkbike and have watched the same videos, and are putting themselves out there in the process. Let's have those fun opinions, but remember they're real people in the process, so let's not critique or slam too hard...unless performance is directly related to the softness of a pillow Smile

I'd volunteer to go home if I was made to ride a MRP fork
  • 3 0
Do you have experience with the longer travel mrp options?
I have been very happy with my 120mm mrp SL. So much so that I got rid of my fox 34 Factory.
  • 4 0
 Loving my Ribbon coil!
  • 2 0
@Ososmash: yep, had a Ribbon air a few years back. Was not impressed unfortunately, The airspring was very lackluster and the damping adjustments ineffective. The bushings were also ovalized after about 3 months. MRP and local dealer were good to deal with however as a positive.
  • 1 0
@Brasher: That was my experience with the Ribbon air also. I had one in 2018. They improved their internals (Chocolux) and I am riding the shorter travel option SL. and have been much happier.

I couldn't find any recent reviews of their newer enduro forks (the 170mm options have slight changes to them like a more robust crown). And I was curious what those were like.

  • 1 1
@brianpark: Thanks! I think y'all auto uploaded the three at the same time, and 2 an 3 were out of order on the watch list on YouTube because one uploaded earlier than the others. i thought it was weird episode 2 picked up mid-enduro, but then realized they were out of order. Total first-world problem "complaint", but maybe something to be mindful of in future series. Happens to me sometimes at my job, too.

You guys do a great job.
  • 9 0
Fun watch! would be great if you guys posted up the stage times and final times
  • 15 0
It would also be great if they gave the viewers more than 1.3 seconds to view and absorb the timing results they do put up. I also don't understand why they initially put up the names in an order that's not fastest to slowest, then rearrange them. Strange. Why don't they use that screen time to just show us the times, straight up?
  • 3 1
@zwa2: That is why there is a "pause" "button"...
  • 7 1
Brody also shown great personality despite being in pain. Sad for him, but let’s appreciate Tarmo’s performance!!! Brody (and no one else) seems to be a threat for Tarmo!! Brody would habe been eliminated later..
  • 9 0
I gotta wonder if his injuries were worse than they let on in the show. I mean I know he’s young but there’s only so much pain he can put up with for so many days in a row. They’re not really there for weeks on end, the impression I get is that it’s about a two week filming period at most so not a lot of time to recover between challenges.

It is a huge bummer he got sent home. I hope he at least benefits from the exposure from being on the show.
  • 13 0
@ridebikesyall: they were. Brody responded on YouTube that he wasn't able to ride for 5 weeks and pinkbike made the right call.
  • 51 0
@Ososmash: No matter what they say on video no one will understand the kind of pain I was going through, not only that day but for weeks afterword's. I had to go home that night, there was no way I was getting back on a bike. Im glad people think I road decent but to me I felt like a grandpa out there. There's parts that don't make it in, like me standing dead stop on a fire road mid stage having no clue where to go thinking I took a wrong turn or something. To conclude, I truly believe and know my pace could have been right up there with Tarmo, even though he is one of the fastest riders I have had the pleasure to ride with!
  • 4 2
@Bvanunen: good on you mate, and hope you are healed up and shredding again!

Regards the show, they still could have been genuine and authentic in the reasons for kicking you out. Rather than making such a fake melodramatic show that it was because of your results!

You should probably work on your mechanic skills though ripping of a broken chain won't help you much in Enduro haha
  • 4 0
 @Bvanunen:
Now knowing you felt you would have been a threat for Tarmo if you we’re not injured, I just want you to be there on PA season 4 and lots of folks (myself included) will be cheering for you!!

Came with low expectations, was not disappointed. I love to watch bad B movies that know they are B movies, PBA is a B movie but they are trying a bit too hard. My number one complaint again is please switch to alternate years of all women and all men. It is like watching 2 different sports going on at the same time.
  • 4 0
Bring Brody back next season. Last to get the call and prep- injured- couldn't pre-ride with the rest and still showed up and the margin he was off the back given all that was not big at all. So much heart, positivity and not a lot of excuses... granted I assume he had a nice pillow. Big fan. Hope he gets another shot.
  • 8 3
wonder how max’s other sponsors (instense/nf) feel about all the exposure he’s getting while kitted out in fox and riding an orbea
  • 7 1
Why would his sponsors mind? I think Max wouldn't be in the competition if he already had his "set for life" sponsors and deal.
  • 1 2
@HCPeltsi: because they foot the bill for him to produce content as an athlete for their brands? why do world cup riders sharpie out maxxis cut spikes on muddy tracks?
  • 9 1
@huculaker: So there might be a chance that those 2 sides have negotiated about the situation and found an agreement about the case? Dunno, lets find Max and ask him. In any case, these are adult people, so there is a slight possibility that they have got this thing sorted out before the rider even started in the show.
  • 2 0
@HCPeltsi: yeah was just curious. always thought max was more into chucking his meat and producing content; rather than winning races… jumps for show, corners for dough

Idea: Do eliminations half as often, but send home one male & one female each time. The way it is now, either you risk running out of one before the other, or you're sending people home for dumb reasons to keep the numbers even. Either way looks bad to viewers.

 #brodygotrobbed
  • 6 2
Anyone else thinking it seems to be part of the plot to not send home the obvious candidate just to spark controversy in the comment section?
  • 2 0
I would love to see this show move away from the eliminations and allow the competitors to ride the whole season with a winner and loser being named each episode. The competitor with the most wins, takes the contract but the others get a bigger chance to show what they can do. Plus a rider like Brody who probably would have acquit himself admirably had he not been injured would get a chance to heal and stay in the competition.
  • 5 1
Brody must have been a liability to be let go. Clearly Amanda was P last by a large margin. Who cares about bike mechanics.
  • 2 0
Well bike mechanics is a massive part of riding for many. Not many youngsters can throw £100 here and there to a LBS to get their stem centered or change a gear inner... Imagine you're on an EWS stage and your chain comes off.. "Oh it's OK, i'll just walk down to town and get a new chain while having a latte".... Not good enough. To race EWS (or any Enduros) you need to be able to spanner your bike (even with a rock !)
  • 4 0
Lots of drone shots and barely any POV clips, must be some reason for this but idk.
  • 4 1
I really think Brody should of stayed, he did pretty well considering he had a injury. Perhaps the judges thought otherwise.
  • 5 5
These type or elimination decisions just destroy the credibility of the series and pinkbike in general.

Will this be like last season (with the bmx girl) where they keep there favourite rider in the series the whole way thru if without fundamental bike riding skills???
  • 4 0
Brody you're a stud, great series so far!
  • 5 0
 Thanks so much dude!
  • 5 5
I could fix all the mechanical issues but it would take me 2 hours and 4 beers. Not understanding all the hate for Amanda. Maybe she is not as good as the others but Brody was also far off the pace and he failed the first challenge. I'm sure she's next to go, so just relax. At least she's crying because it's a beautiful place to ride.
  • 2 0
@Bvanunen Way to go Brody, showing some solid character and heart in the show and backing it up here in the PB comments. Much respect! I predict good things in your future!
  • 4 1
 That elimination choice: boooooooooo
  • 5 2
Brody will come back for season 4, calling it now
  • 2 0
Is it me or does everything feel rushed in these episodes?
  • 5 0
I did like the longer format episodes of episode 2. Maybe the rushed feeling comes from the "commercial break" show transitions that are shown every 2 minutes...
  • 3 1
What's the possibility they bring @Bvanunen back next season?
