Video: Andrew Taylor Visits Maine, New Hampshire & Massachusetts - AT's Ultimate 48 State Road Trip

Maine

As we entered into Maine we really didn't have any clue on the mountain biking this State had to offer so we pulled out Trailforks and started researching. That's when we found out we camped out right down the road from Sunday River Bike Park. We knew it was closed for the season but we figured why not try to ride it anyway. After a quick talk with the bike park manager we were free to explore the mountain. The conditions were freezing and wet but we made the best of it. From there we took a solid rest day and got the chance to check out the coast near Cape Elizabeth before hitting our final stop on some fun technical trails in the town of Turner.

New Hampshire

Jeff and I made our way from Turner, Maine into North Conway in New Hampshire to rip down a trail we heard about called Parking Lot Smoothie. After a lap down the mountain we headed to Highland Mountain Bike Park to finish off Jeff's time with me on the road trip.

Massachusetts

After a few solid weeks on the road with Jeff Watts, we made our way into Boston to drop him off at the airport. Shortly after I picked up Lila Scott to join me for the next handful of States. From there we made our way to the Lynn Woods trails to meet up with Owen Hafferty for some cool rocky riding. Before getting shut down by the rain we made our way over to the Vietnam trails where we ran into Fausto Benavidas on the trails for a couple of quick laps.

The next states up are Rhode Island, Connecticut & New Jersey. You can follow the adventure through my Instagram & Youtube channel with a new video every week.

Cheers from the road!

No Thunder Mountain in MA....you fucked up
  • + 10
Tell me about it haha it was on the route but it ended up dumping rain for a few days straight so we had to skip it. I definitely want to hit it at some point down the road. I hear it’s awesome!
  • + 3
@AndrewTaylor: you cover Lynn woods pretty well. like everyone said thunder would have been cool. Cool videos though. I am digging them.
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: Thunder is one of the best BP on the east coast IMO. Some trails there were built by Gravity Logic. They are building new trails all the time including a HUGE Jump trail. Hawlywood is another great jump trail there. A lot of tecky east coast rocks and roots knar. Awesome place to ride.
  • + 3
Plus 1! Thunder is awesome. Although their chairlift is laughable it's an amazing place! @moutnbiker:
  • + 2
 Loooooove thunder!
  • + 5
At least he hit up the Vietnam trails, those are timeless classics.
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: Should have gone to rhode island!!!
  • + 1
@scott-townes: agreed by man. They're my idea of New England riding.
  • + 1
@moutnbiker: Thats what we heard and was fired up to get there but a huge storm messed up the plans. Next time around for sure!
  • + 1
@scott-townes: its been a bit tough picking and choosing what to ride especially with weather usually being a factor but I'm stoked we mad it to those trails and ran into Fausto along the way!
  • + 2
@pogan: I did and what I found was rad! It's my next video I'm dropping on my channel later today.
  • + 3
 You found everything in Lynn?
On your own?
  • + 11
Sunday river is much cooler place then the video captured. A lot of steep rocky rooty terrain. Pretty much all natural not built up like a typical bike park but cool terrain.
  • + 2
I always regretted not going there when I lived in New England. Sounds amazing.
  • + 4
Sunday is soo much fun! Love Tango n Crash. Lots of trails there are legit DH trails. My wife cut here teeth there(quite literally) and Attatash
  • + 3
I was just going to post that it's a shame they didn't have anyone to show them the good stuff.
  • + 5
I agree, we hit it so late in the season that most the trails were covered in sticks and leafs so it was hard to really do it justice but it was cool to check it out.
  • + 2
@ViceGrips: yeah that place is no joke! A lot of gnarly tech!
  • + 10
Lynn, Lynn the city of sin, you never come out the way you went in. I was raised in Salem (next door). I grew up riding motocross & bmx bikes in the Lynn woods. So good to see the scene is still alive!!
  • + 4
This place is we so sick!
  • + 1
@AndrewTaylor: Lynn woods is such a new england classic! It's so funny too as I got a tour probably 10 years ago from Kevin! Looks like I need to go back!
  • + 5
Wish it covered Vietnam a little more. That place was amazing,
especially back in the early 2000’s freeride craze. A lot of the trails are super technical, wish we got to see more of it, I miss that place!
  • + 3
Yeh dude. I rode those trails back then and they were awesome with all the sketchy north shore features. We rode it all on hardtails with 80mm forks and vbrakes!
  • + 1
@skill7: exactly! Hucking to flat on crappy hardtails everywhere. The spider drop was terrifying. It was awesome. I’ll have to go back!
  • + 2
Yeah I actually rode a lot more that I had in the video but ended up only using the footage with Fausto. It's always good to have footage ripping with the locals.
  • + 3
Highland's my local bike park, and by far my favorite place to ride on the east coast. There's just something about it that you don't get from the videos. I hope you got a chance to ride some of the other trails, sounds like you had been there before. While the mountain is small, the variety of trails is massive. The Double Black freeride trails are something that most people work their way up to over a couple years; huge drops, and super unique features.
  • + 2
Definitely! I used to go there every year for the Claymore Challenge and it's always been a favorite. I hadn't been back in years and was stoked to see how much they have kept improving over the years!
  • + 2
Absolutely killing it with these @AndrewTaylor.....they just keep getting better and lovin' seeing how many cool places and cool folks to ride with there are in this country. On that note, Jeff is awesome and a total inspiration to keep on huckin!
  • + 1
Thanks bro! It’s bee! the most wild year of my life haha I’m so stoked on all the cool places and how rad the mountain bike community has been along the way! Yeah let’s all hope to be sending it that hard at 58 haha
  • + 2
New Englanders aren't exactly know for being open and sharing folk. None of the trail systems I grew up riding in southern NH are on trailforks. Heatmaps show that most of what we rode is still being ridden, but not all. It's out there, and it's freaking great. It's been 20 years since I rode the trail around Peterborough and it stil ranks as some of my absolute favorites. Sharon, New Ipswch, Greenfield, Francestown, The Hillsboro freaking Classic... Almost makes me want to attend my HS reunion, but not quite.
  • + 3
I love east coast riding. I grew up riding Lynn Woods and Vietnam and the skills I learnt riding there have served me well. Riding the slabs in Squamish this summer bought those skills right back!
  • + 3
Yeah man those are both cool spots! I don’t typically ride that type of stuff and had blast on all the rock tech stuff. It definitely keeps you on your toes!
  • + 2
Great videos Taylor! We’ve really enjoyed watching your adventures. That’s too funny you drove your RV up Hurricane Mt road. I kept kept meaning to offer some tours in NH and Maine when you made your way over here. Maybe next year, cheers
  • + 2
Thanks, it’s been fun making them! Yeah we were pinning it so we wouldn’t get slammed with weather so a quick shuttle up seemed legit. For sure, I’d be stoked to spend more time up there. I feel like we barely scratched the surface.
  • + 1
@AndrewTaylor: Conway has some great riding, some of the best in the area. But some equally as good and better about an hour away.
  • + 2
I live across the street from Nam, and I'm glad to see someone coming out to enjoy it! If you ever make it down again drop me a message, I can show you miles of awesome singletrack and hidden gems...
  • + 1
Sweet, I’ll keep that in mind if I’m ever back in the area!
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor I rode with you at #campnorco at South Lake Tahoe a couple years ago... So glad you rode Lynn and 'Nam. Those were the two spots where I "learned" to ride back in Boston.
  • + 1
Oh man that was a fun time up there! Both those spots will really test your skills! That’s rad you learned to ride there!
  • + 3
Having grown up 30 minutes away from Turner (on the other side of Lewiston) and having gone to college 2 hours north: Turner is not even close to the middle of nowhere Maine.
  • + 1
The way we drove into the trails and not seeing much around made it feel like we were out in the middle of nowhere. Jeff and I were stoked to stumble across this place!
  • + 1
@AndrewTaylor: oh its certainly the boonies, it's just still way more populated than anything north of Bangor
  • + 4
Love the cameo by Kevin, AKA "Guido", also know as Carrot. He is a man of many names......
  • + 1
Haha this guy is the man with good vibes!!
  • + 1
I lived in Plymouth, MA for two years and have thankfully returned home to OR. If all I had to live for was mountain biking then those two years could have been enough to make me end it all.
If you’re unlucky enough to have to move to that area be sure you bring your SSHT29er. It might be all you need.
Sorry, New Englanders, I truly am. I know you love your trails like you love your Tom Brady and your Dunks but I just don’t get it.
  • + 1
nah bro whats so bad about new england?
  • + 2
I just never got along with it. I don’t feel like the trails have any flow. There’s just these short loops you have to ride over and over again and they’re full of janky rocks and bogs. You don’t get to gain or loose any real elevation so you just have this patchwork of fun features you have to leap frog to.
Candy Hill in Stowe was my favorite trail system in NE. That includes the Kingdom Trails. Cady hill has flow and jumps and fun fast descents, they makes good use of a small space. Highland is one of my favorite spots ever and is way better than the Bachelor bike park out here. But, the rest of the trials I’ve ridden are just not fun to me. Not worth an hour drive anyway.
Just my own opinion.@pogan:
  • + 4
if you only ride for flow the. You can’t ride shit. I’m from NE, live in the PNW, I’d never give back my time riding the tech of Maine and vt. Seems like you just don’t know how to ride anything but NW flow.
  • + 2
@Glendmcc: That’s a fair assumption. But you don’t dispute my description of NE trails. So, whether I was “good” at riding them or not is one thing and whether I enjoyed them or not is another. The trails are what they are. I’d be happy if some one told me I just didn’t get to ride enough and there are long trails with significant elevation loss out there in the Whites but that’s not how it is. Like I said, if I had SSHT29r I would have been happier with the trails.
  • + 4
Hell yeah @MaineMainiac ! Great to see your trails getting some well-deserved recognition
  • + 2
Western MA riding is where it's at. Great xc and all mountain stuff for days, and then of course for DH, Thunder is the best.
  • + 4
 That old dude stomped it.
  • + 2
haha yeah Jeff Watts is a legend!
  • + 2
Awesome videos and great riding ???? bad luck with hitting NE doing the wettest stretch of weather since ever. The van is sick. Love the graphics
  • + 2
Thanks! Yeah it was insane trying to navigate through with all the weather but we still had a blast!
  • + 2
There is a picture of Wade Simmons riding the same roller in the thumbnail. Somewhere around '98 or 2000ish. During a group ride before a NWD video premier.
  • + 1
Stoked you mentioned this! That’s rad!
  • + 1
Back then all those rocks people added to smooth out the transition weren't there!
  • + 3
Is lincoln logs all you saw in 'Nam or you get the full tour? There is some awesome shit in there
  • + 3
I actually rode a handful of the other trails but ended up only using the portion from when I rode with Fausto. I like using footage with the locals rather than just riding solo. I was definitely stoked on what I rode!
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: Fausto is good people, we ride Nam, Highland, Pisgah and Thunder together. He makes a lot of friends out on the trail. Nice footage! I hope you are hitting DHP in Rhode Island, one of my favorites, heading there in the morning.
  • + 1
@Caddz: for sure, it was super random how I ran into him and stoked I did! Thanks man, have fun out there!
  • + 4
Lynn and Nam are rowdy! Glad you enjoyed NE.
  • + 1
Yeah I had a blast riding that stuff! I usually seek out more jump and flow style stuff but these places were so cool and stoked we got to check it out!
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: It's one of the more difficult places to learn to ride, but very rewarding when you get it!
  • + 3
Wow. Lynn Woods looks really fun. I never thought of taking a mountain bike to Mass.
  • + 1
Yeah i had no idea but it a was insanely good!
  • + 1
It's a good time with some interesting locals, and also interesting local riders!
  • + 4
Hit up Glenn Park in PA and hookup with the Pocono Bike Company crew.
  • + 2
I ended up pushing south faster than I expected because of weather so I’ve already been through PA. Stoked to put that video out soon!
  • + 1
 Definitely
  • + 3
Wish IMBA would let us build trails similar to Reverse Cowgirl in CO. Awesome videos
  • + 3
#f*ckimba is the way to build!
  • + 1
 Thanks!!
  • + 3
I live in CT, where you thinking of riding?
  • + 1
I’m curious as to where they’ll go too.
  • + 7
I ended up riding Trumball with Wayne Devingo. Another super rad spot on the East Coast!
  • + 12
@AndrewTaylor: @AndrewTaylor: waynes an a*shole, never helps dig or build anything and gives tours of our spots to anyone he can drag along, we call him wayne the tour guide. f*ckin loser.
  • - 2
@whitebullit: Really Ours spots when did a state park becomes your spot. Next time you see me in there lets talk about who’s a f*ckin loser.
  • + 5
@waynedevingo: not worth wasting my breath arguing with a old midget, cus at the end of the day youre still gonna be a tool... but if you're lookin to catch a beat down, keep it up buddy, im itchin.
  • + 4
@waynedevingo: anytime you want to talk let me know. By the way the park is 90% owned by the town, we consider it our spot because we build and maintain everything. There have been many time when we have been work when you ride by and never offer to help, but when we finish you bring your tour bus and hit our stuff. That’s why you are a loser. Is there anything else to discuss?
  • - 2
Are you for real, you socially inept crybaby? You’re gonna attack someone in a f*ckin online thread who you’ve known for 20 plus years who you’ve ridden with and has done more for the sport than you’ll ever do? Someone who has actual friends (not suck up sycophants) that want to come ride local trails in a friendly atmosphere and document them? You don’t “own” jack shit. The woods aren’t “yours.” Just because you put your hands in the dirt doesn’t make you lord of ledges. Lots of other people do work, and none of them have such a shit attitude as you do, or attempt to claim any type of ownership on PUBLIC lands.
ANYONE can show up and search out “your” trails, ride them, or film. In fact, I’ve seen more than a few over the years who did just that, who never even heard of Wayne. Most everything else was already there naturally, all you did was enhance natural features, off trail, wherever you felt like it. Btw, all of your 3 friends say hello to Wayne when youre not there. They just acquiesce to acting like mutes when you’re around because they’re afraid to piss you off for some reason. I know because I’ve seen it. Just keep moving, don’t wanna upset Mr trail boss..
Really it’s sad, because of all the places in 48 states that Andrew’s been riding, you have to be the one who throws out bad vibes in OUR state, on someone’s story who you’ve never met, because you’ve got some stupid beef. You should take your beef elsewhere. Or just open up a civil conversation instead of staring at your shoes acting like a stuck up jerk all the time ✌????,MF. ..@whitebullit:
  • + 0
You and your lame ass group are totally pathetic . you guys are disgrace to the mountainbike community @muddysocks:
  • - 2
Your a Nothing in the mountain bike community. Instead of you’re threatening Me over the internet. Be a man and say it to my face . @whitebullit:
  • + 3
@waynedevingo: like I said anytime you want to talk let me know.
Bill
  • + 3
It’s funny you say that when your Instagram feed is full of the trails that me and my friends have built. All we have ever asked from you is that you keep the location quiet. And you don’t. You parade people through showing them our drops and jumps, posting on Instagram and claiming it as your own. That is disgraceful behavior. @waynedevingo:
  • + 2
@waynedevingo: look up what a "threat" is, before you misuse words in your native language, pussy. i simply told you whatsup. you park at the commuter lot? just tell me what time you get there, pussy. ill keep an eye on my dm's for you, pussy. Smile
  • + 3
Ha so sick. Can't believe you got Jeff to do that... oh wait yes I can.
  • + 2
Hahah you know this guy sends it so hard!!
  • + 2
@Andrew Taylor not sure when you plan on RI but Arcadia, Burlingame and Woody Hill are my home runs...also Big River.
  • + 2
Jiggz, we need to make it up to Lynn woods, place looks killer!
  • + 2
@freeridact: for sure brother! As soon as you get that arm put back together we are on it!!
  • + 1
I ended up riding Diamond Hill, the K-Rob skatepark and some jumps in Providence. I'm stoked on what we found and dropping that video on my channel later today.
  • + 1
 @freeridact: I highly suggest it!
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: Nice, glad you got to see some of the decent stuff here, for a state smaller than Huntington Beach, there is a lot of riding.
  • + 2
Looks like everyone in the Watts family wears the same pair of jeans when they ride!
  • + 1
 hahah that they do!
  • + 2
FYI North Conway trail shown is Redtail NOT Parking Lot Smoothie.
  • + 1
I thought we had found Parking Lot Smoothie but I guess not. By the sounds of it we missed out big time but Redtail wasn't bad at all!
  • + 2
Good Stuff Andrew! Is Jeff Greg's father? That dude is cool as hell!
  • + 2
Sure is haha yeah he’s good people!
  • + 2
looks like At's got steezy wheelies. Also, I miss summer.
  • + 1
 Hahah thanks bro!
  • + 2
 Cool series of vids. Subbed!
  • + 1
 Cheers!!
  • + 1
Not doing Thunder or more Vietnam is a disservice to Mass.
  • + 1
I really wish I could have, we had Thunder in the plans but a big storm rolled through and shut us down.
  • + 1
 ????????????
  • - 1
I still can't get why they call these hills mountains....
