Video: Andrew Taylor Visits West Virginia, Tennessee & North Carolina - AT's Ultimate 48 State Road Trip

Apr 4, 2019
by Andrew Taylor

West Virginia

We made our way from Virginia into West Virginia over the Allehgheny Mountain Range to meet up with local shredder Ryan Logan at his zone just outside of Lewisburg, WV.

Tennessee

This week we mountain bike the trails in the greater Knoxville area. From Devils Racetrack at the Baker Creek Preserve Josh Gee and I made our way out to Knight Fall on Sharps Ridge. From there I made my way out to Windrock Bike Park to finish off my time in Tennessee chasing Damon Sedivy through the tech gnar and into the jump lines that it had to offer.

North Carolina

The mountain biking scene in North Carolina is definitely one to check out. From Pisgah to Dupont Forest, you can find just about any type of riding terrain you're looking for. Huge thanks to everyone that showed me an awesome time while in the area!

The next states up are South Carolina, Georgia & Florida. You can follow the adventure through my Instagram & Youtube channel with a new video every week.

Cheers from the road!

There's always those isolationist locals who sarcastically say "don't bother coming here, the trails are horrible." I'm not on that boat. Western NC has some of the best riding in the entire southeast, some of the best breweries in the country, some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet, and some of the best people you'll ever meet in your life. After you spend any time in the NC mountains, especially after ripping down a pile of technical chunk at mach chicken, you'll be circling the date on the calendar when you're coming back.

tired of hearing "best breweries". stick to coors banquets dawgs

@rideitall-bmx-dh-road-unicycle: but for real, we really do have them. not to mention distilleries and vineyards.
  • + 10
I feel that one day soon and some days now I could happily be one of these ‘isolationist locals’ you speak of.

@rideitall-bmx-dh-road-unicycle: just enjoy the resurgence of beer while it lasts my friend

Is it even possible to rip down any descent in Pisgah or DuPont any more? I tried a couple weeks ago and there were people standing in the middle of the trail like so many well-dressed deer in the headlights every couple hundred yards. All about the looking right and getting the gram now, riding has taken a back seat.
  • + 2
Not to mention all the off-leash "trail dogs."
  • + 1
@SangamonTaylor: You gotta ride the descents that the insulated vest wearers are afraid to hike up. Or, get louder hubs.
  • + 6
 There's riding in North Carolina???
  • + 4
@johnski: They were all mountain bikers, unfortunately. Never had a problem with hikers (that trip). DuPont in particular was crazier than I've ever seen it and I've been riding there since 2005. Trying to climb the armored section of Jim Branch and there's a couple with their bikes across the trail taking a selfie. Next day, saw a trail dog attack an on-leash hiker's dog. Asked if they knew Transylvania county had a leash law and got a "f*ck you" in response.
  • + 2
@SangamonTaylor: DuPont will ticket for no leashes too, which is great I think.

@danielsapp: I currently live in a tourist town in the NW. One that has commercials and adds showing off the local mountain and trails and breweries and everything else to draw as much tourism as it can to the area. You get to a point where you can point out non-locals and you want to just hate them for crowding up the area. But I have to remind myself that they are the reason the local economy is going strong. Why the local trail network is huge and well maintained. And why the local breweries all have a fighting chance to survive (there's a brewery for about every 4000 people that live here, that's pretty nuts IMO). Overcrowding sucks, but a thriving local economy is something to appreciate. Even if I hate every single massive RV that decides to drive through downtown. And every camper van parked at the local trails with no bathroom so they just sh*t all over the woods and don't even bury it.... Frown

@DavidSA: yea down at Charlotte whitewater center
  • + 2
@JaredHarzan: the trails in WNC have been here waaaay before it was a destination. Its actually ruining them here bc now they are going in and "fixing" them. So sorry but that's not a correct statement, for WNC anyway. AND this "thriving" economy has polarized the economy so much more than people who have been here forever and have the same jobs they always have can't keep up with increase in prices. So actually nevermind its just shit all the way around really

Western NC has some of the best and most varied riding in North America, I say.
  • + 0
@DavidSA: I thought it was just called Cackalacky. There's a North AND a South?! Is that new?
  • + 1
 ????????
  • + 3
 @seanrallison: eaaaasy bro!
  • + 1
@JaredHarzan: Oh yeah. I get it and feel your struggle. It's all a balance, right?
  • + 2
@motomike138: haha you know it's all love for you!
  • + 7
That dude must be moving a lot of West Virginia moonshine to be rolling in whatever fancy whip that was.
  • + 4
He's not from this neck of the woods
  • + 8
 Fokk stupid drones in Pisgah.
  • + 5
Fokk drone flying in Pisgah. Nothing lamer than some duder with a screaming loud RC car in the sky over your head & a joystick in their hands to have to ride around.

Living in NC and coming from FL, I love that this is a thing, and am really enjoying the videos!

When in Florida, make SURE to hit:

Santos/Vortex, Ocala, FL
Alafia River State Park, Brandon, FL
Grapefruit Trails, Melbourne, FL
Loyce Harp Park, Lakeland, FL

Stop by LeRoy's Bikeworks in Lakeland and say hi for me to the main man!
  • + 2
Santos and Alafia are definitely worth the stop. Absolutely love both those trail systems. I'm lucky enough to be able to ride both on the weekends.
  • + 3
 Check out Graham Swamp too.
  • + 2
Hit nearly all those places and absolutely dug a Florida! I’ll be dropping that video in a few weeks. Stoked to edit that one!
  • + 2
@AndrewTaylor: awesome! FL has really gotten a bit of time in the spotlight in the last few months, which is great as we have a lot of good trails to offer!
  • + 1
@AndrewTaylor: The baby I didn't mention was Mount Dora Park trails, they're this tiny little hidden gem NW of the Orlando area.
That place is wicked for how small it is.
Check it out if you ever go back!

Couple things...I've been waiting on the NC video...Now i'm even more pumped to finally be moving out of CT to NC this summer. Josh Gee I knew him when he was a teenager..used to come to our dirt jump trails back in the early 90's when he was just starting out....Josh, if you're reading this...Its G Plaskett.. Great to see you pop up in this video.
  • + 1
Yo welcome to NC! What part are you moving to!
  • + 2
@undrtow218: Charlotte area...Heading down this Sat. to look around.

@P90xgreg: www.tarheeltrailblazers.com if you haven't found it already.
  • + 4
Hot damn! I had no idea Charlotte NC had such sick trails! Can't wait to go there!
  • + 4
Charlotte? Are you serious or sarcastic? Can't tell.
  • + 2
@bizutch: I'll let you decide Wink
  • + 1
 @seanrallison: :-)
Yep yep...everytime someone says "OH man! lets go down to the Whitewater center and ride..."
I'm like- "ok cool i'll bring my beach cruiser"
  • + 2
@seanrallison: I've gotten to ride around Charlotte, Apex, Greensboro a few times over the last couple years. I get whiplash from all the zig zagging and back tracking. Their trails are what they are, but they pack so many miles into such small spaces. It's impressive in usage if not in thrill factor.

I always look forward to watching this series. That said, you missed a ton of good riding in Pisgah. That's the beginner trails that you rode there.

Thanks man! Yeah I feel like I could have spent a lot more time in the area but was stoked to finally check it out!
