I still can’t figure out why pedal companies still use set screw style pins instead of pins that thread in from the back. Set screws can be brutally hard to change out after a season of bashing when the hex is bent and smashed to shi.....

I’ve seen these kind of comments for years but still don’t get it. If the top (front) of the pin is smashed to bits how is trying to thread it back through the pedal easier than just getting some pliers on it!?
  • 10 1
@OrangeGoblin: in my experience you can just cut it off and thread it right out, whereas when the front loading set screw type can be difficult to grab with vice grips when they’re worn down to a nub. We’ve even had to use easy outs on occasion. I guess either way it’s a total pain in the @ but I still prefer them to thread in from the back.

BAD pedal companies still use set screw style pins.......fixed it for you Wink
  • 2 0
@Trudeez: i wouldnt bother - let that bad design fail and go away...
  • 5 2
@Trudeez: Yeah, you could cut them, but then the thread gets messed up and threading them back out, through the pedal body, then causes the threads in the pedal body to get messed up. Now not only do you have messed up pins, you've got a messed up pedal that won't take any more pins. At least with set screw type pins, while arguably harder, can be threaded out with minimal damage to the pedal body.

The reason I think the ones that thread in from the back are better is because they're usually recessed into the pedal, so the hole for the allen key doesn't get all buggered up.
  • 4 1
@gtill9000: yeah but normally what happens is pin part of the screw gets folded over and in the process of removing it you destroy the threads.

With the design you can just use pliers to spin the screws out without damaging the threads.

Honestly i just buy cheap composite pedals normally and don't bother replacing the pins. A pair of five tens helps a million times more than a couple of pins ever could.

I've thought the whole pedal design through a lot. Each design has its flaws. Grub screws from the top, tons of grip because of the major diameter (peaks) of the thread pitches, can easily find at a hardware store. But you take a hit to them and the bend, you're likely to elongate the threaded hole in the body and make it useless.

From the backside allows a SHCS, but you shear or mushroom a pin, the threads in the body are coming with the damaged pin. The Harder material wins that contest every time.

The SHCS style pin from the back is superior in performance and is easy to remove. So that would need to be utilized. Hardware easily available at your local hardware store would be a must for replacement. No damage to the body is a must.

Is it possible? I think so, at least I have an idea. If I get some free time in the future I'd like to design a set in CAD and put them through the test.

SHCS - Scottish House Condition Survey, Sacred Heart Canossian School, Swiss HIV Cohort Study, or Socket Head Cap Screw ?

According to google, SHCS means Socket Head Cap Screw.

@OrangeGoblin: The pins generally shear off, so if they're threaded from the back it's easy-peasy to get them out.

 Fully Agree, Chromag Scarabs FTW

Alu screws with some in reserve is what I prefer, they shear off cleanly and don't mess up the pedal body. Just keep some in reserve, you will need them.
  • 1 0
I had some a long time ago that threaded from the back side, but they were such small torx head it was impossible to clean the grime out and get a good grip on them

Anyone else expect an episode of Airwolf to start after hearing that music!?
No?

I think I had a set of those New Balance in the 90's. And that bar hump was some next level riding there. Always good stuff from the Transition crew.

I feel like mountain bike shoes are designed for people who find the 503 stylish. Their inclusion is appropriate!

I can't understand why company's advertise products with shit like 2 OVERSIZE OUTBOARD CARTRIDGE BEARINGS, surely if they're oversize they won't fit?? Im addition to this, if they're outbourd they'd be like an external bottom bracket. Cut the crap their just pedals.

I came here to make fun of a flat pedal launch, but was pleasantly surprised by a dose of fun Transition vibe. Next full sus bike, I wanna smuggler pretty bad.

I'm eyeing up a patrol pretty hard right now!

@Paxx: Just bought a Scout! Incredible bike, just wants to go faster, up and down.
  • 2 0
@Paxx: Just got a '18 a month ago. I'm loving it now after maxing out the volume reducers on the shock. The paint chips off from every single piece of gravel or just looking at it wrong though so use paint protection film everywhere unless you like the moon crater look.

These look good but kinda run of the mill. I’m blown away that the longer platform pedals like Pedaling Inovations hasn’t been widely duplicated. Longer pins=more traction. Longer pedal = less rolling underfoot.

SO stoked to see more DUAL CONCAVE come to MTB. Your feet just suck in, which means you don't have to buy crap sticky rubber shoes (unless you're new to riding). I've been buying BMX pedals for the past few years that are dual concave. There are options (like Odyssey) but they feel clunky compared to supertech of MTB pedals. Again, stoked!
  • 1 0
@filmdrew: I agree, I want to try these or something similar. I went from some cheap bmx style pedals before I splurged on some Fivetens and VP Harriers. I thought the Harriers would be perfect because of my size 12 shoes, and they have been super long lasting and durable, but the lack of concave causes me to have to look down to see if I have my feet positioned right. They're so flat that I can't feel where my feet are, which is a problem I didn't have on the bmx style pedals.

Checking tolerances with Harbor Freight calipers... must be a really well engineered product.

Not only is it a joke video, but there's nothing wrong with HF calipers unless you're a serious machinist.

Umm Cascadia USA with a picture/map including BC, Canada! I get what you're trying to say, but associating BC with being a part of the US is a no go.
  • 3 0
Have you been to a yankee Costco lately?
  • 1 0
Could be worse. Some people claim BC is actually Br(ex)itish.

@MX298: Why would I go to the US?

@islandforlife: down for milk and gas eh

 @MX298: no way...

Pedals. Aha. And why again are they better than those from Aliexpress for lets say 35$?
  • 3 0
I just spent a good 10 mins searching through those and they look like shyt. Here is how this pedal is better. They have a sensible pin layout, the pedals shape is pretty well optimized to deflect pedal strikes ( id like to see more camfer actually) and they have concavity. In two directions, that's the big selling point here. In less words this is well made and well designed, that $35 aliexpress isn't.
