Video: Ben Cathro Gets in Shape to Race World Cups as the Pinkbike Privateer

Mar 19, 2020
by Ben Cathro

I NEED TO GET FIT! This video is not an instructional video! It's more of an inner monologue/motivational video involving what I've been doing to get in shape for the coming season racing as Pinkbike's Privateer. If you're wanting to improve the fitness I recommend you get some professional help from a trainer to make sure you're doing the right things.

@ben-cathro, so good. The production quality was high, great storyline, well written, funny as hell. If the WC season doesn't pan out, please still do something. I'd watch n+1 more vids like that.

Guys, I hate to be the realist, but there’s a medium to high probability there is no World Cup season at all this year with Covid-19 and travel restrictions.

Just think of how hulked out he'll be by the time racing starts up again. Smile

 @brianpark: Beefcake!!!

This is the lost year for every sport. Nothing is going to happen, no champions in any sport, no olympics, nada.

@brianpark: doubtful on that extreme side of the ectomorphic scale of bodytype. Definitely will be fit however.

I'm impressed he can get anywhere near his toes since they're so far away. I could be wrong but I think he's like 8'6" or something.

the dude is soooo funny cracked me up few times

When he said he was getting new kit I assumed somebody else would dress the lad. It's like watching a nine year old boy head out of the house with no supervision. So funny.

@rrolly: do you remember his get up when his bags got delayed going to Whistler. The man has no shame, and we love him for it #neverchange

@ski-bike-repeat: Just so funny. At first I was like "what is with this guy?" Now it's part of the appeal.

That may be the best training video ever! Stoked to see Ben doing this series, he is always fun to watch and his take on World Cup racing is always a welcome change from the normal commentator type.

On the next season of The Privateer: Ben gets the production crew of Adam's two seasons.

If all gets to normal level this year about COVID: there should be one race where the winner gets all the trophies, world champ, overall etc. for each discipline...
  • 1 0
This is awesome, keep them coming, you'll probably inspire some older downhill racers to jump back into there local races after a long hiatus. A real relate-able guys that has a laugh but is taking it seriously. Looking forward to watching you race soon.

 My emotions:

F-U Cathro, don't race, I need more of your line choice videos and interviews at the WC's!!!

Last few weeks
F-U Corona!!! I want to see how well Cathro does at the WC's!!!

Seriously could not wait to see how he does. Hopefully we return to racing at some time this year.
Until then keep training.

Not only are you a good Lad, But this vid cracked me up many times, Shoulda been a Comedian!! Good luck this year Ben, And bring on more of this awesome content!

If you wear the whoop band on your wrist and bike ride, you tend to get overly high strain scores with little effort because of the vibrations, it seems to work better around the ankle... house arrest style.

Love that Ben is on this, definitely a riding style role model for us 190cm+ guys out there! However, would be great to get a bit more detailed insight in how your GETRIPPED™ training approach is set up.
  • 3 0
Has he gotten the points necessary to qualify for a World Cup race?
  • 1 0
In yesterdays video he mentioned he needs 30-something and already has a few, less than 10 as far as I can remember.
  • 2 0
So good! Racing better happen this year just so we can see how Ben gets on!
  • 1 0
Excellent stuff Ben!! Pinkbike last year you had a female (sorry i cant recalled her name) rider training for enduro EWS i believe. What happened to her?
  • 12 0
Zoe was training for enduro racing in general with the dream of racing an EWS event. She's still kicking ass (with wide bars) and we will be catching up with her later in the year!
  • 2 0
@jasonlucas: Shouldn't your "wide bars" line have a disclaimer on it? Big Grin
  • 1 0
@jasonlucas: Thank you for the info, cant wait to see how she is doing.
  • 3 0
Can I put you on my Fantasy team?
  • 2 0
Anyone else think of the “Choose Life” speech from Trainspotting when they watched this video?
  • 1 0
Ok Pinkbike here’s the deal.. I’ll buy a PB product every week if you keep sponsoring Ben so he can keep doing this videos
  • 2 0
Should out to everyone who’s been supporting Ben to do this videos. This is way better than Netflix and Disney plus
  • 2 0
Exactly what I need this morning. No matter what happens with racing this year, Ben, keep making these.
  • 2 0
DudeI missed you and your sense of humor
  • 1 0
I would have liked to see him try some Enduro races, I think he would have done quite well...
  • 1 0
he was Scottish Enduro champ a handful of times
  • 1 0
@ski-bike-repeat: wouldn't he be a shoe in for the EWS then?
  • 1 0
That section of him stretching and doing yoga in the gym while Bro-Ben looks on and laughs at him... feels sadly familiar
  • 2 0
Was that urine low pulp or medium pulp?
  • 1 0
So awesome, Great content, light hearted and funny as f**k, keep it up @ben-cathro
  • 1 0
This is more entertaining than 90% of the stuff in the telly! Great work guys! keep them coming WC or not.

Wasn't the point of 'the privateer' supposed to be showing how a 'normal' person can/cannot perform in elite level competition if they have the budget of an elite rider? Cathro is excellent and I'm not knocking him, but I don't really see the point as he has already proven himself as elite. Likewise with Adam, great guy but why go through the same thing twice. The second season was a bit of a waste. The 'privateer' seems to be really missing the point.

Well, first thing it´s nice to change things up a bit. We had a "normal person" give it a try twice now, this time it´s an semi sucessfull ex racer who´s giving it another go after a longer hiatus from racing on the big stage. And we gotta be fair here, Ben never was a pro in the sense that most sponsored guys on the WC scene are. He had support, but as he said, this time it´s about finding out how far he can go without outside distractors like work etc.
I think that is a rather intriguing base to start from. A guy we know has the raw skill, but never got to put it all together and focus a hundred percent. If anything, it´ll help us answer the question that always keeps coming up about how important the team and team environment is for a racer in order to perform to his/her maximum potential.
So personally i couldn´t be happier with the choice they made.
The guy is a ball of good vibes and energy, a guarantee for funny videos, can articulate his thoughts about racing and has an actual chance to make a noticeable impact in the standings.
That alone is pretty much a guarantee for an entertaining season.

Thing is most normal people wouldn’t be able to ride down a World Cup downhill track or get enough points to enter in the first place, so you need someone who has already shown that they were/ are capable of getting to the start gate. I’m not clued up on EWS but the tracks look more like normal riders could get down them and the entry skill level requirements are not as high as DH.

Spicer, yes you have a point .... BUT, firstly he so dam entertaining with skills to back it up. But the dimension I am looking forward to seeing (as with Adam) is can he go (I paraphrase BC here) from a good amateur who wasn't able to deliver at the big races, to getting a top 50/60 result at the WC (which I would say is). Its all in the head. Easily said, few can do. Just think about what was going through Bruni's head last season. Best of luck Ben. We will cheering you on from the French Alps
