Video: Biggest Attempted Front Flip in Mountain Bike History

Oct 9, 2014
by Pinkbike Staff
Tom van Steenbergen is becoming the king of the front flip. He went for it again at Red Bull Rampage, although unsuccessful, was still impressive. Who else would try it? We asked Tom about his attempt and how was able to build up the courage to attempt it.

bigquotesIt scares the crap out of me committing to do a front flip that big. The one I did for the Unreal Movie definitely gave me a lot of confidence for the one I tried in Rampage. Though they were about the same size, they were two completely different jumps. The Canyon gap was a slight stepdown and easy to overshoot from my run in. I just slowed down the rotation too early because I thought I was going to overshoot. Not being able to spot your landing makes it twice as hard too. - Tom Van Steenbergen

This is Tom's successful attempt, the largest landed front flip ever, while filming for Anthill's upcoming movie, Unreal

Damn that dude is on FIRE! Seriously though, someone needs to strangle those commentators for Rampage. The two dumbest announcers ever..

 yeah, we know.

Does anyone else think that jump and landing could have been built/angled better?
  • 18 4
JC, there are two options for that jump.

1. You mellow out the lip, making it easier to hit the landing more consistently, but rendering it practically un-trickable. (There are only a few people in the world who would consider that jump trickable as it was.)

2. Build the landing bigger. If you take a look at how many sandbags are already in it, you can get an idea of how much more time and labor it would have taken to build it bigger. I'd say they did a great job with what they had in that spot.

Those are rocks, not sandbags and it for sure needed to be bigger.
  • 9 2
 You're right, that's a shitload of work!
  • 8 5
@anthony3vans Those are no doubt sandbags, not rocks..
  • 14 3
@eldofreeride Anthony was on Tom's build crew so I'm pretty sure he knows what that landing was made with.
  • 27 1
My bad, actually I'm pretty sure they're pillows. I don't know why anyone was afraid of the gap now, come to think of it.

@mecabeat @anthony3vans @eldofreeride Yeah those are actually rocks Wink and those have to be REALLY heavy and hard to stack... check it here www.pinkbike.com/photo/11472331/?s6

Great attempt in the first vid, partially ruined by the commentary from a couple of 'professional' network dicks. I resent that now our sport has become 'popular' with a mainstream audience, we have to suffer the likes of these a*sholes.

I also don't understand why the guy's spontaneous exuberance was edited out of the second video. We are mostly adults here, even young kids know how to swear these days. Obviously, foul language is no big deal to us riders, so I can only assume the edited expletives are for the benefit of advertisers, and who gives a flying f*ck about them? -- even our posts are automatically edited now! WTF is this shit?!

Suspension can only take so much he got buck it wasn't his fault

Looking at a photo sequence from the side you can see that he actually hit the landing just fine. He was just under rotated.

Tom Van Steezebergen. I was definitely most stoked for his run at Rampage. No other rider would have tried that front flip. Balls.

He's outta his god damned gord. There's another angle of that front flip he landed for the movie and its absolute insanity.
  • 7 0
Ironically he would have gotten the extra degree or two of rotation he needed if it weren't for the extra weight of his GIANT BALLS.
  • 3 1
Yah but if his balls weren't so big he wouldn't have even tried
  • 3 0
 That's why he said ironically?

Where does he get the mental power to do that? I mean, we watch flips everyday on videos and stuff, we get used to that.... but I am sure most of the people don't have a clue about how bad that can go....

And to frontflip a canyon? Man.... Scary!!!

Astronomical proportions!!!
  • 11 2
the amount of stoke when he lands the front flip still gets me every time!!!!! major props!!!
  • 5 0
Any word I'd he is ok from the crash?
Great entertainment but I do hope he didn't do serious damage.
Last I heard he was going to the hospital when crossed into Canada with a very swollen hip.

Tom van Steenbergen is insane for doing that front flip over the 70 ft gap but if there is one man who can do what he did I bet it'd be Antoine Bizet. Too bad he wasn't able to compete due to his injured kidneys. www.pinkbike.com/news/antoine-bizet-front-flips-over-a-river-video-2014.html

Undoubtedly that was one the sickest thing ever made on mtb. But he needs to mount camera at different angle or make capture angle a little wider so we'll be able to check a handlebar either
  • 9 5
Sick but is it really wortth breaking your neck?
  • 5 0
 who broke their neck?
  • 7 3
A dump truck follows him around to carry his massive Balls!!!
  • 1 0
When you see the crash part of it from the side in slo-mo'. checkout the amount of whip his neck gets! Sick attempt tho' and full respect for all that rode, and great job job done by all the build teams!

Who is stoked to see Unreal!!

No doubt had he landed it and had a good finish to his run he would have had best trick and maybe even podiumed.

 LEATT!!!

Did his rear tire hit his seat? It looks like it does and instantly stops it.
  • 2 0
I cant get over how dumb the announcers are...
  • 2 3
What is the problem with the announcers? Kenan Harkin helped pioneer the 360 flip and the double flip, he isnt some nobody. What is the deal?
  • 11 0
Apparently, he's not helped pioneer sports broadcasting Razz

Seriously, with all due respect; the announcers probably sound just fine to the NBC audience not familiar with mtb or freeride very much, but I found their comments to be inaccurate. But, this is nothing new for network tv broadcasting, I think I can remember similar things going on when Wide World of Sports used to air. They had a handful of hosts, who probably had little to no experience in whatever it was they were covering. Most people probably never knew the difference. I just find it sad, when a sport has articulate, informed, and energetic talent who could comment on such a landmark event (Tippie, Warner, even Claudio... and others)- but get passed for people who probably couldn't change a tire.

Maybe others don't see a problem with that... maybe there isn't a "problem", but it rubs me the wrong way.
