Whitefish Bike Park is known for its flow and boasts more than 25 miles of lift-accessed and cross-country mountain bike trails above the Flathead Valley in northwestern Montana. Braydon Bringhurst made the trip to check out the trails at Whitefish Bike Park, where 2,353 vertical of drop is easily accessed by two lifts.
@Muchogusto: I'm coming up next week, anything specific outside of the bike park I should ride? The swan mountains looks like some big rides. I'm coming from Durango, CO so not worried about climbing just bears.
@thegromit: For a big backcountry loop check out Doris Creek -Alpine 7 - Columbia DH. I also heard Napa to Wire is a killer loop too. And yes Spencer Mtn is a good zone for shorty fun techy/freeride laps.
@thegromit: Some great riding in the Swans, but most of it either requires a shuttle or is a massive day (usually with a bunch of hike-a-bike). If you don't have the option to shuttle but want to get a bigger ride in, check out the Ten Lakes area (about an hour north of Whitefish). Great trails in there, and it's a bit easier to do a loop back to the car.
And yeah, carry bear spray on any of those backcountry rides.
Check out the Legacy Gram... this is place is raw, real and downhome. No corporate vibe, just a bunch of riders... oh yeah, and there's some sweet camping there too.
Yeah, I do it when I'm fully committed. I'd rather have the added strength helping with the bigger hits. Less arm fatigue too. Also helpful on a trail you're intimidated by, but for no good reason. Like Dirt Merchant. You can't bail on a jump if you don't have brakes.
FYI, if you get stung by a bee in the face and you are swelling, do NOT ride the Summit Trail down the mountain. It takes forever to get to the bottom and you end up doing a fair amount of pedaling. Do send your unexperienced friends down Summit it is way mello. Freebird, also a sick trail.
How roasted are the trails at this point? Headed there in 2 weeks. Also, any good suggestions for areas to look at for dispersed camping outside of town? Hit me up if you have good secret spots!
No, it has not changed. They probably made Kashmir worse in many spots. Freebird has not been touched since they built it. Jumps at bottom of Kasmir have been expanded.
They cater more to tourists riding up to the summit bar than they do bikers.
Just go to legacy bike park and don't support this shitty greedy resort.
@chwk: Well that flow trail, which is Kashmir is pretty blown out. I'm going to ride it tonight with the kids. Expecting a regular dust bowl. That being said Spencer is firing as is legacy bike park. You don't have to go to WFMR to get rad on a bike.
And yeah, carry bear spray on any of those backcountry rides.
And ride Columbia mountain back side. Very rad trail up there
trails are currently roasted so I rode gravel bikes with beer and weed and camping last weekend and it was insanely fun

And... yeah. Enough swooper trails for sure. That’s why my favorite trail was runaway train and that’s what I tried to portray. Cheers.
