Video: British Doctor Urges Mountain Bikers to "Make Good Decisions"

Euan Rossi, an orthopedic surgeon and medical consultant at events like Crankworx and Hardline, is urging mountain bikers to make more sensible choices if they choose to ride during the Coronavirus outbreak. Rossi has been on the frontline of the NHS in Glasgow and fears the NHS will be overloaded if more mountain bikers take risky choices on the trail.

bigquotesAddressing mountain bikers, you obviously know I love to ride a bike, I love to race bikes, it's a massive part of my life but right now you have to make good decisions. One of those decisions is not putting pressure on emergency services unneccessarily. Yes, go for a spin, get your legs turning, get your heart and lungs working, we know that's good for you we know that increases your resistance to disease, makes you healthier, keeps your mental health in good nick but don't do anything that's going to test the emergency services right now. Don't be an a*shole and go over the bars and break your collarbone right now, the country just won't be able to cope. So, please, be responsible. If you go out yourself, tell someone where you're going. If you get to a trail centre and see that there's about 20 people queueing for the ticket machine, tell them they're being idiots and to give more space and then just move on. Keep away from other people right now.

If you have a fever or a persistent cough, these are the two hallmarks of having Coronavirus, you must self isolate for 2 weeks, it's absolutely essential.
Euan Rossi

As the world struggles to suppress the spread of COVID-19, please follow the guidelines of your local health authorities. Even if you don’t have the virus, bike-related hospital visits put additional stress on your medical systems; do not undertake any activities that put you or others at risk.

Thanks for putting this out there but if people don’t understand this by now...

People still won't understand this weeks from now. If you haven't noticed, people are kinda dumb.

It’s not so much the experienced riders out there that need this message, it’s the people who don’t ride regularly who “rediscover” the bike in their garage and don’t know their limits. Unfortunately, they probably won’t ever see this message either.

They will understand more clearly in the next couple weeks as the hospitals fill up and people they love become sick.

@5afety3rd: No. Accidents happen to anybody, at any time, on the most mundane of features.

Ppl aways say that, and it's a valid perspective, but after ten years and 20,000+ miles(two trips to medical), I find risk to be almost 100 percent manageable and elective.
  • 60 2
@AllMountin: multiply you by 50000 people with the same attitude and that’s 100000 injuries in ten years, or ten thousand a year, or about 833 injured being added to a strained health service in a month.

Be careful out there guys.

I don’t have a problem with dumb people. Or, more accurately, I accept their existence as an unavoidable reality, fully aware that “dumb” is a moving target, one which I occasionally hit myself. The problem that I wish we could avoid is the harm done TO others BY dumb-acting people. As is the case with vaccine-preventable disease, failure to Social Distance and/or quarantine is hurting more than just those who want to continue to exercise their right to be dumb. As the trail sign on my ride said yesterday: “Be smart. Do your part.”

@nimmo: statistically, adding users raises the numbers. Obviously accidents happen, riding with caution is always a good idea, but caution is relative to the user.

As has already been stated, people of all persuasions are capable of stupidity. Need I say what follows... lol
  • 6 2
Sound advice, but by it also applies to only driving when absolutely necessary, as you're much more likely to be in a car accident (even now) that requires real ICU care and resources than a biking accident. Probably should avoid eating sh!t food that might cause a heart attack and cut down on the heroin consumption to maximize available healthcare assets.
  • 1 2
 Be one of those things where you walk into the emergency room bleeding with your collarbone sticking out;

AND they send you home as you are because your just not that "urgent" considering...
  • 41 1
 Thanks for that Euan.
I concur. As a newly crowned, Coronavirus Queen (got my results today).
Also, I'm a doctor (GP), 100% got mine at work. Not that old (43), but I do have asthma. Listen to what experts say. I'm telling you, stay safe, don't be stupid. Pneumonia ain't fun.
Also if it turns out that you were already infected but asymptomatic (or with very mild symptoms) and you will get to Emergency Room, there's a high risk of you infecting the medical staff treating you (look what happens in Italy and Portugal - in Portugal every fifth - I think - doctor got infected!!), which means that A LOT of other people might not get help in time. This usually also means closing the ER (A&E) or an other ward for disinfection, for at least a few hours. This ain't no joke, we see a lot of this here in Poland. One whole hospital had to be evacuated (patients and staff), because many of the staff and also some patients were infected. It only takes one spreader to infect 2-3 other people, do your math. Be responsible, not only for yourself, but for others.
Also, probably most of you know someone with cancer, asthma, hypertension, coronary heart disease, kidney disease. Take into account that if they get infected, you might lose them.
It kills me to think when I'll be able to ride my bike again (and I just got back to riding more stuff after broken ankle Frown ).

@jackalope: www.bicycling.com/news/a20016671/cycling-deaths-are-on-the-rise Maybe not safer than driving. But eating healthy and no heroin is great advice.
  • 6 0
 @patricktb:

Terrible trend for sure, but the sheer number of car related deaths/severe disabling accidents makes cycling seem relatively safe by comparison. Seems like the general message should be don't do anything inherently risky right now given the circumstances.

@justanotherusername: My point is that my two trips to medical(which required no actual treatment) came doing risky things. I've been injured zero times requiring any actual repair, and zero times when I was just JRA. In the end, I'll continue riding while you continue thinking your opinions and upvotes matter.
  • 20 1
@AllMountin: I did backflips over the top of a car once when I was JRA in a bike lane totally within my rights. A former coworker of mine, absolutely fantastic rider, who's life work was bikes was parlayed JRA. As a former first responder, I've seen worse with people who just went for a ride. Why are you such a special snowflake that you have to tempt fate, right now?

My father is an MD at one of the largest hospitals in the country dealing with this along with RT friends actively treating COVID, I know and can say non-anecdotally the gravity of the situation isn't being blown out of proportion (at least not by medical professionals) and is being worsened by people who can't get a f*cking clue and participate in the meager, temporary life changes needed to help improve things.

Let's put it this way: my wife is a cancer survivor and if she got laid up because a bunch of asshats can't stop partying despite all the warnings and any added strain on our healthcare system prevented her from getting care, I don't even want to imagine the words and emotions. JFC

Over here there were quite a few people who got injured working on their house, falling off ladders, etc. Also not so smart... I think this situation will take months, so you do need to find some responsible way to get exercise. Riding a bike can be done safely if you just do it for the exercise part and leave the adrenaline part out of it. I personally just ride on the forest roads and don't attempt any technical features.

  • 7 2
@Squarepedaler12: The incubation period of h1n1 was somewhere on the average of two days, which is why a virus that is transmissible while being asymptomatic for over two weeks is such a big deal. As far as I recall the Obama admin. declared h1n1 a health emergency WEEKS before it was declared a pandemic by the WHO meanwhile today each state is scrambling to find their own, individual solution due to a complete and total abdication of responsibility by the white house since practically the new year. The situations aren't all that easily comparable but if you seriously don't understand history is actually informing today's reaction you're even more hopeless than you've shown so far.

Can't say I've followed the thread enough to know who's wrong or right... But dam, sure seems a lot of asshat negativity and general bitchiness going on... (and even though I replied to the bottom comment at the time, it's not necessarily directed at you)

Sure your more likely to die in your car on the way to the trailhead. But this is, in our time, an unprecedented situation that requires some extra effort and a little more... if not kindness or respect because some of us don't seem to be capable. At least mutual acknowledgement that were in this together and how we act, and how we respond to others actions are going to be what either makes this totally f*cked up and keeps getting worse; OR just bit of a frustrating spat in our lives we can tell our grand kids about...

IMO, we're only in as deep as we are because of the current backlash trends in society to be "me/us first"/can't be bothered with any prudent or cautious actions that might benefit the greater good. Short sighted and it shows.

Anyway, pry neg propped out of existence in 5, 4... and it was NOT my intention to do the soapbox... what I really wanted to say was.

Stay off the trails, to many people think they’re too good for the rules to apply to them. The worlds best all have a massive catalog of injuries and most of them came from silly little crashes on mellow trails mine included. At least if you get hit by a car or have a heart attack you’ve got an excuse To be in the hospital. You don’t have an explanation for how you got injured miles into the forest with a mountain bike when you wasn’t supposed to be mountain biking and it just makes us look like dicks to the rest of the world.

  • 1 3
@5afety3rd: all they’re asking is that you take a month off so they can concentrate on saving as many people as they can. They’re probably at some point soon going to have to decide who lives and who doesn’t based on how much medical equipment they have, last thing the need is some arsehole biker who only cares about themselves who’s turned up to A&E with a broken neck when they should have been at home. Stop being selfish and irresponsible and spend your time shaping lips or cutting turns for when you can ride again. It’s not hard listen to what the doctors are saying, they’re the ones on the front line dealing with it and do what you can to help like any decent person would. Have a nice day dude and don’t forget to wash your hands.
  • 4 0
@thenotoriousmic: That is difficult to understand. I don't believe we need a blanket "no trail ride" decision for the whole world. That seems just as closed minded as the people who are still riding their DH bikes at race speeds on public multi access up/down trails and posting their GoPro to show how bad ass they are because Covid19 don't slow them down... Both decisions are at the extreme ends of the spectrum and I don't agree with either of them.

Most silly little crashes on mellow trails don't end up requiring medical attention. The OP was just saying to be cautious, to be mindful of your actions and how they might end up affecting others AND to make sure your following local health and safety guidelines. The note at the top of the PB website about not taking risks is a good mantra. (despite the continual flow of video's with riders taking risks!! Smile )

Now I think a person has to consider their situation, if I was in the middle of New York where hospitals are filled to the brim I'd be making different decisions. And if your not supposed to be out in the forest mountain biking where you are at than I'm not advocating you do. But I think there are plenty of situations where a person can get out and ride and also be safe and make good decisions on how fast they ride, what features they ride and where they ride so that they are minimizing risks to acceptable levels.
  • 2 4
@stiingya: clearly you’re not getting the information In the USA or it hasn’t really hit home yet. Give it a couple of weeks and it will start making sense.

You can’t go out on the trails and guarantee that you won’t get injured so you shouldn’t be on them. You shouldn’t need the government to tell you that, it comes naturally to any mature respectful adult. You can keep making excuses to justify your selfishness but your risking people lives and you know it.
  • 1 2
@stiingya: The issue with that, is that people are stupid. If you tell people "go out and ride, as long as it's isolated and responsible", the next day the parking lot at the most popular trail spot is full to the brim with cars, and people are sending it as hard as they can.

Since people as a whole can't be trusted, everyone has to suck it up for a short while. Don't be the guy that ruins it for everyone else.
  • 4 1
@thenotoriousmic: See this is what my first post was about. Your actions and reactions to others are only making the situation more stressful. Your jumping to conclusions, making accusations and being an absolutist for no reason. The sad part is at the heart of it there is "some" logic to your argument. But your rabble rousing is going to cause most people to miss it.

Going for a trail ride doesn't automatically = Rampage. I'm in total compliance with my local health and safety requirements and at the moment the state is encouraging us to get outside and exercise. If that changes I'll change my habits too.
  • 3 0
@Dethphist: The parking lots I've been to are not packed, and even with plenty of space in the lot some people parked along the road to keep their space. The trails I've visited were not at all crowded. The couple rare times I saw and passed by others they got off the trail to keep their distance. Granted, I did not go "to the most popular trail spots" on purpose. I didn't personally see anybody "sending it as hard as they can", just average people and some family's out mountain biking.

I'm not saying it isn't happening at all in my area; but it's not rampant. And there will always be stupid people. If they close all the trails tomorrow there will be some idiot who builds a ramp in their backyard and jumps off his 2nd story roof. I'm not going to be "that" guy. But I'll keep up the mellow trail rides as long as it's still OK in my area.

There has been a lot of talk about making sure people are still following social distancing guidelines and not bunching up on hiking trails, etc. That if it becomes a problem there will be new restrictions. But so far it's been good...
  • 1 2
@stiingya: You’re taking unnecessary risks during a pandemic where all that’s required of you is to stay home so our hospitals can save as many people as possible and you’ve somehow concluded this is an appropriate time to go mountain biking? Ok mate.
  • 4 0
 @thenotoriousmic:
It’s clear we should try our best not to end up in hospital. The question is how far you have to go to achieve this. Most accidents happen in and around the house, people slipping in the shower etc. Should we all stay in bed the entire day? This situation will last months not weeks, so people do need to keep their mental health as well as their physical health. Exercise helps with both.

@thenotoriousmic: you can still mtb without being in the realms of an extreme sport. Dunno who made you moral arbiter of all things mtb/covid related but take a break pal.

At the moment gov advice allows us to go out, if they feel that admissions to trauma units / a&e are too much then they'll give us a signal... may be in the form of a TV broadcast from our PM...
  • 2 2
@iainmac-1: You’re taking an unnecessary risk because you’re ether stupid and don’t understand the consequences or selfish and don’t care. It’s not a difficult concept to understand I have absolutely no idea what it is you’re struggling with. The government guidelines are clear and it definitely doesn’t involve mountain biking of any kind. Every single mountain biker knows they’re taking a risk when they go out on the trails and they know what’s going on right now. You don’t have a leg to stand on mate.
  • 4 1
@thenotoriousmic: all the gov guidance says is you're allowed out for exercise once a day whether that's a walk, run or cycle. No specifics beyond that, so you're talking shite. May I remind you that the gov is issuing this advice on the behest of our chief medical officer. If the situation changes, the advice will change.

You also failed to acknowledge my point that mtbing doesn't have to be extreme. You can get out on your daily cycle on the mtb in the woods and not incur any more risk as you would on a road cycle, probably even less so. I will repeat that this is still well within gov guidelines.

You can repeat what you're saying like a broken record all you want pal, there's not much else to discuss. Until our CMO & gov say otherwise, we are still free to go outside on our bike, once a day, in our locality. Like the orthopod in the video above says, just don't take unnecessary risks. Are you saying the orthopod also doesn't have a leg to stand on?

Assume the moral high ground all you want, but when this all over and the NHS is back to normal (under resourced and really f*cking busy), go out on your bike, send it, break a collar bone, and while you are waiting in a packed out a&e give yourself a big clap yeah.
  • 1 3
@iainmac-1: Ok you’re clearly stupid. When they say go and exercise they don’t mean go mountain biking, road cycling, rock climbing they mean go for a jog or something that isn’t going to see you in hospital we’re not even supposed to be driving unless you have to and I addressed your point, you’re just to thick to understand that mountain biking of any kind in a unnecessary risk that’s irresponsible to take right now. Just use some common sense, take a month off and so as you’re told. Thinking is not for you.
  • 4 0
@thenotoriousmic: so in your dim head what does the gov mean when they say "cycle"? I can link you to the gov website stipulating so but you obviously have not and will not bother.

Jogging is an unnecessary risk, so is skipping or any physical activity, can hospitalise yourself doing anything. You have failed to grasp the point I have made that the gov is taking the advice from the top of the NHS in setting out the guidelines, so if the advice from them gives leeway to cycle along a forest track, or on a road, or run very fast or walk on grassy hill then we can.

Won't bother replying to any other dense reply you give. Better of discoursing with an orange. Stay within your Facebook mob pal.
  • 1 2
@iainmac-1: You need to lay of the skag and the tenants super mate they mean exactly what they said you absolute moron. Cycling NOT mountain biking. Come on mate use some common sense. Anyway I’m bored of trying to reason with these mouth breathers who thinks its an appropriate time ride mountain bikes. You can’t reason with stupid. You know I’m right you’re just trying to justify your selfish behaviour I don’t need a response, if you don’t agree with me now you will in a couple of weeks.
  • 3 1
@thenotoriousmic: Then just sit in your house, don't shower cause you could slip and crack your head open, don't drink cause you could choke, don't cook cause you could start a fire, don't have sex cause you could have a heart attack, etc. etc. In fact you better stop typing on your keyboard so much cause you could get carpel tunnel and require medical attention...

There are acceptable levels of risk decisions to make depending on the local situation. My decisions are totally fine.
  • 4 1
@thenotoriousmic: hahahhahahahhaha go die please. What other country is doing drive through testing like we are. Your healthcare system is weak. I bet you we get out of this with statistically lower deaths than any other country. Especially your shithole country.

@Squarepedaler12: You’re all overweight, uneducated and now you’ve lost your jobs you don’t have health insurance. You’re f*cked but you’re right we are following in your footsteps but at least we don’t have tent favelas on the streets of our richest city’s so we’ve still got some way to go before we stoop to your level.

@stiingya See this is why you’re mocked. Just because there’s a possibility of someone slipping in the shower doesn’t make it ok to go and hurt yourself on a mountain bike. Surely you understand the difference between having a heart attack and intentionally getting on your bike and taking risks you shouldn’t be taking and getting yourself in hospital?

It’s not a difficult concept to understand all you need to do is stay at home where you probably won’t get infected and therefore don’t spread it on to others and you don’t do anything that’s going to put strain on our at capacity emergency services that includes getting into the shower carefully. Just try and think about someone other than yourself for once. Have a lovely day guys. Xxx

 Thanks for post Smurth.

I was ashamed at what I saw on Sunday on many so called "relevant athletes" feeds on Instagram. Far too many "day 1 of quarantine", "self isolation riding" type posts. Not only do they risk spreading a potentially lethal viral infection, they risk stretching our emergency services beyond breaking point.

People have worked hard - often under the radar - to make mountain biking a legitimate and widely accepted pastime in the UK over the last decade. The way some of these riders were behaving jeopardises that. Let us not forget that in the UK, more specifically England but also official trails in Scotland, land access has been hard won and is easily revoked.

This will pass, but we don't need a legacy and perception of self entitlement hanging over the sport we love when it does.

I'm 42, dad of 2 with mild asthma recovering from major surgery. No idea if I'm high, medium or low risk but know my decisions are more than about me. I love my NHS, love the UK so I'm going to do what's easy, I'm staying home with my kids and wife. Going to ride my turbo, do some DIY, plant some veg in my small garden and generally chill the fuck out for a few months. If the biggest challenge I face in my life revolves around watching Netflix and reading old MTB articles on Pinkbike for a few weeks, I'll consider this a life well lived. Stay safe, think about those you could affect and remember this is just for now, not forever...

Completely agree. I've had all work cancelled since schools are close. I'm kicking back, spending more time cooking food, gaming, fixing bikes, "all those jobs" I've apparently been putting off...

Biggest take away for me is how toxic the comments are on pinkbike. This is probably the worst comment section I’ve read yet, absolute shit shower of stupid opinions as facts and downright dangerous fake bravado from the reality deniers. I quite liked pinkbike for a while and I will potentially keep an account for access to the classifieds but I’m off to read news elsewhere. The problem with unmoderated comments is eventually everyone without an extreme agenda gets bored and wanders off.

I don't think there's been enough emphasis on how that if 80% of people are experiencing mild symptoms to completely asymptomatic, then the reported figures are a very small fraction of how widespread the disease is already. Also, our governments were way too slow to react and don't want to admit how bad the situation is.
  • 2 0
Our figures in the uk are complete shite, we are not testing enough to have a clue what’s up. To be fair though at least it may mean the death rate is much lower than currently indicated.
  • 3 1
The stats on deaths in Italy are truly shocking, one person is dying every 2 mins 40 secs 24/7 with their death rate the last few days or so being between 550 to 790 a day.. Spain is looking at one every 4 mins the last days.. they are stock pileing body bags in key places in the UK as they are in a crisis what is to potentially to come

Something to remember, is that if you fall and get badly hurt, you are making a decision not only for yourself, but for the person who's hospital bed you will be taking up. If you are young and healthy, your triage will likely beat the 70-year-old if beds are short, and that person may die. It's not normally a concern, but right now it could be. I loooove me some biking, but keep this in mind at the moment.
  • 8 1
It's only a matter of time before things get locked down further everywhere with the number of people not taking this seriously.

I'd also like to highlight the amount of resources getting injured takes away from people who's lives are at stake. My wife is a doctor and said the average procedure or surgery requires ~10 people to be present in the operating room. That's 10 masks doctors, nurses etc. could be using to help people who actually need it. There's already a shortage of masks and protective equipment everywhere for healthcare workers.

You may have to just deal with that broken collarbone and having a shorter arm because it's just not important compared to what's hitting healthcare systems right now. All elective procedures are being cancelled; that includes some cancer treatments apparently to put it in perspective for how serious this is becoming. Don't be a selfish a$$hole and take away protective equipment from people like my wife and put her and my family at risk.

Same in my neck 'o the woods, but then who am I to talk? Rode a sparsely used trail with friends but we parked at an over-crowded trail head. Going forward I have decided to spend my ride time upgrading one of my mt bikes to 1x12 and riding my road bike only where everyone I encounter is in a car. Coronavirus vs collision with car is the dilemma. But 50+ yrs of road riding and no (major) incidents, I like that statistic better than the chance of getting and spreading the virus.

As a worker in a busy uk bike shop do you feel we should stay open? We are very busy with both sales and are currently stacked out with workshop. Is it an appointment only affair or shut it completely as the guidelines say. I ask this this as the powers that be are edging (as other busy uk stores are posting as appointment only). Myself and my colleagues are concerned as interaction is most obviously an issue and we all have family’s. Any comment is grateful.
  • 1 0
I would close the front of house but keep doing repairs etc. If you have a shop vehicle, offer collections and delivery back.
From what I have seen already, a whole lot more people are using local Web based community groups to spread word of mouth for good service/workmanship providers from grocery delivery through home repair etc. There are new opportunities to be had in this new/temporary, more local economy. tup
  • 2 0
@Dropthedebt: thanks for the comment as it’s useful to know whether we should carry on. Before the announcement tonight about absolute confinement we were crazy busy with new sales straight off the shop floor (right up until close today). We are a small indie shop with a strong following. Reputable workshop has always been a key source of income for us and we don’t want to let people down with not only their key source of transport but also to maintain and do what we all love to do. A very fine balance in the eyes of those in power. We want to help those that find us essential but don’t want to annoy those off that think we are contributing to the problem.

  • 1 0
I think as people in a risky sport, we just need to have a little more restraint then normal. Stay well within your comfort zone. Think of it as when you normally ride do you typically push yourself to the edge if your fears and skill. If so maybe pull it back to about 80%of that. Work on more fundamental riding skills and techniques by riding easier stuff. Do some trail work build some new features. When all this comes to an end and things get back to normal it will pay off.

I appreciate that riding recklessly isn't appropriate at this time but when I separated my shoulder it was on the gravel road at the bottom of the double black tech run where I wasn't expecting any injury. If we ride there are risks. We should keep riding. Ultimately the decision of who should isolate is a political one. We have shut down the global economy, schools and colleges for a disease that impacts a known segment of our population. I live in the PNW (Washington) and the current numbers indicate that 110 people of have died so far 0% of the total deaths occur in people 39 yoa or younger, 2% occur in 40-49 (at least one was immuno suppressed from cancer) 5% occur in 50-59, 12% occur in 60-69, 30% occur in 70-79 and 50% of deaths occur in those 80 and older. While any death is tragic ( I have multiple family members in the high risk category) the reality is we are currently asking those least likely to die to pay the price for those most at risk. I continue to see those in high risk categories shopping and going about their daily business while the local, state and federal governments (even pinkbike) continue to advocate that somehow my dislocated shoulder would be the burden on the healthcare system. The true burden is a lack of awareness by those most at risk who don't change their behavior and self isolate. Now I'm just another internet idiot so please read the following article by an actual Stanford Epidemiologist and get ahold of your elected officials before you're arrested for riding your bike alone.

Hi Scott. Yes the biggest issue right now will be those not following social distancing and taking unneccessary risks. This video is just one in a series I have made discussing key issues, where 99.9% is aimed at the public en masse to do the right thing. We as mountain bikers can do our part though. That's all I'm asking. Injuries that require surgery like wrsist, collarbones etc require a huge amount of healthcare resources compared to a bed space for pneumonia that resolves with some supportive treatment. And yes, I have seen this article bounced around many a time. The title is fairly sensationalist for the content, however to quote the article itself, "Flattening the curve to avoid overwhelming the health system is conceptually sound — in theory. A visual that has become viral in media and social media shows how flattening the curve reduces the volume of the epidemic that is above the threshold of what the health system can handle at any moment. Yet if the health system does become overwhelmed, the majority of the extra deaths may not be due to coronavirus but to other common diseases and conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, trauma, bleeding, and the like that are not adequately treated." The article is a discussion. Yes we need more info and that will come from testing, but the infrastructure simply isn't there. That requires time, and we are asking for help to get time on our side.
  • 2 1
Good article, but all he says is we need more data, he doesn't suggest how to approach the problem (or how long to wait to collect the data). Most countries seem to be accurately predicting the infection rate from the actual death rate.

Whatever the figures, there's no doubt that the health systems in countries affected couldn't cope. 24 doctors and medical staff have died in Italy, because your risk increases with exposure. One of the highest risk categories is high blood pressure. In the US (and probably the UK) that's about 40% of the population above 40.....

So....the cops shut the down the beaches. Call out these people! Dont be afraid, do your part. IF they want to start shit.....after telling them they are idiots, get their number and offer a one on one, toe to toe, man to man.......AFTER this is over!
United we stand not only as a country but a planet!, Good things always come of the bad.....we got a ways to go. After this is over, the world will be a better place.

Keep sending if you can, if you cant...get your bike porn on! One thing I have learned from many bad , long lasting injuries from Kiteboarding to Mtn Biking.......when the time comes to shred again....you will appreciate more than ever, and trust me when I say you/we will come back stronger, better and smarter... be it an injury or pandemic.... we will be back!
Spent nearly two years non weight bearing....ended up with bone infection and 16" permanent titanium rod in my tibia. So I say the above with experience......

Be well, be safe, help thy neighbor, dont hate on E bikers, gravel bikers, street bikers or uni-cyclist .....we are all in this together! And we will all be able to SEND again!

It was intended for the "groups of 20" and individuals not wanting to call them out in fear of getting ganged up on..... but in a way.....this is a fight...against the virus...for the saving of everyone near and far.....so if idiots are ruining it for us be it closures or spreading virus....sometimes the keyboard doesn't work, and when you are out numbered on the trail, some "tough guy" always runs his mouth surrounded by his crew.... so "IF they want to start shit."......do the above... and squash this problem at the source....then if they are still the "tough guy" on the trail after giving them the facts.......well some may walk away and let them get away with it. Not I, I got a whole world I care about, and sometimes, unfortunately, some dudes so stupid you cant fix it but by stooping to their level and calling them out, and its always the stupid that want to fight...... so I guess sometimes we gotta fight for whats right.

Hope that cleared it all up, sometimes you have to beat a horse that wont drink the water otherwise they/we die.

Cheers, nothing meant bad to those following the rules....only to the few ruining it for us. Speaking up here is great.....but speaking up in real time on the trails or beach in person (from 6 feet away) is how we can stop this.

Be Safe

YOU and YOUR profession overload the healthcare system with your unethical treatments and forced surgery for "preventative" measures. Ortho docs are like life insurance salesman. Mostly not needed, but everyone makes you think you are important.

@Squarepedaler12: Having had many injuries and surgeries plus dating some medical professionals, the general consensus is Ortho surgeons are the "bros" of the medical community. Some of the worst bedside manner ever, don't care about the patients aftercare just that they did their job and off to the next one.

@nyhc00 @squarepedaler12 didn’t your mothers ever teach you not to make sweeping hateful generalizations?

@Squarepedaler12: Didn't your mother not teach you to be a massive prick?

Statistically there is a very good chance at least 1 of those 20 people will has the virus.

Euan also works for the NHS, he is far from being a 'life insurance salesman'. The NHS don't preform surgery unless it is truly necessary.

What are you doing to help?

@mossa: but yelling at people what to do isnt being a massive prick? Social distancing isn't a thing. It is a fake term to control you and make you hate others more. Stop spreading propaganda. You tool.

Statistically you are a moron if you think that 50,000 cases in a country with 330,000,000 people would make there be a statistical certainty that one of 20 people in a group would have the virus. Especially with a maximum of 14 day incubation period. You have a higher chance of one of those people having a real disease that kills you, HIV, Hep C, etc.

Last point, then I'll let you go back to planning your next job in this "gig" economy, I am currently working on getting PPE and supplies to our local hospital. On my own dime. Have filled 1/2 of their monthly request already with careful strategy. We are ordering directly from the manufacturer and have pooled our order power with other companies in need. What about you? Running another grubhub order?

@Squarepedaler12: Maybe you should keep working on getting that PPE instead of sitting on Pinkbike trying to sound smart and just being a general dickhead.

I'm working from home and the company I work for have given Stanford Medical School in California access to our two 96 Terabyte servers to crunch data in the search for a Covid-19 vaccine while we can't use them.

Cheers.

Telling 20 odd people not to stand so close together is pretty valid.

 @4xwednesdays:
Okay, I'll elaborate:
Calling a large number of people IDIOTS is a really good way to put yourself in immediate need of medical attention...unnecessarily
See, chances are more than one of those 20 people will take offense to being called an 'idiot' to the point where they will react, well, violently toward you.
That should be fairly obvious to anybody with the kind of life experience a grown man gets along the way
