Video: Building and Riding Huge New Jumps in Bellingham

by Kona Bikes

This video was filmed, edited, and features the crew behind ShireBuilt.

If you have been to Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham, WA, chances are you have ridden down a trail that was created by ShireBuilt. ShireBuilt is a trail building company made of local riders and trail diggers that teamed up to build some of the best mountain bike trails in the PNW. One of Galbraith’s most popular trails, Mohawk, was built by the crew a year ago and quickly became a local favorite. Full of flowing lines and jumps that get progressively bigger as you descend, Mohawk has become one of the signature jump trails in Bellingham. The bottom section was just rebuilt and features a few larger jumps and a hip fit for Shakira.

ShireBuilt was created a couple of years ago to help make our growing mountain bike community so epic by building trails that are big, creative, and add an entirely different dimension to the local riding. Spencer, Andy, Scott, and James are the faces of ShireBuilt. Their skill-progressive trail building style, with small jumps next to the bigger jumps, was quickly adopted by the community and has helped create some natural-born shredders.

Top of trail: Crank It Up. Bottom: rebuilt Dirt Merchant. They're not kidding about progression.

Killer riding!

Mohawk should be a numerical representation of jumping skill. It really is true that every jump is bigger than the last, especially with that last section they added.

"Oh man, I made it all the way to jump 8 today!"

Me at the top.."wow this is fun" .. By the bottom.. "wow I really really suck at jumps". Then Mullet is there to make me feel better

It’s hard to get a sense of how big the jumps are at the bottom: I’m assuming massive
  • 1 0
 @enduroNZ: Not Audi nines massive?
But really good to see jumps are all just hips which is a lot better that straight jumps for judging speed!
Or can keep hitting the jumps faster & take wider lines & still land high up on the landings, GOOD JOB !!!!

I know the video looks like bike candy porn, but Pinkbike is borderline negligent in not posting the realities of living in Bellingham. The community of 90,000 has the highest percentage rate of STD's in the nation. 37% unemployment, it rains constantly so 8 months of the year you can't ride the trails. Something in the water makes people lose all their hair by the age 47 and everyone has gingivitis. The only career choice is for counseling as everyone suffers from depression, or medical degree for helping people with gonorrhea and herpes. It's important for those thinking of moving hear to know just how awful of a place it actually is, and if you never hear from me again, you'll have a good idea why.

47 you say? I’m in. Lost mine at 29.

The real question here is, are you even from Bellingham?

@vatosteve: Cottonwood Ave, 6 blocks North of BTC. Don't try to come and visit though as the cops have the entire area barricaded for a stand-off with gangs due to the high amount of drug dens. Bend, Oregon is supposed to be a real nice place though.

@ldhbaker: Bring your own penicillin, very short supply here.

@johnnygolucky: I thought the gangs had been decimated by meth'd out murder hornets?
  • 3 0
@graniteandrew: Gangs and murder hornets have joined forces, that's how bad Bellingham is.

We're losing our hair because people keep moving here and driving up our housing and cost of living. Oh and once they open the boarder again, you'll have the murderous Canadians coming back down causing mayhem.

 Good lord that looks fun!
Amazing too considering that it's not in a "bike park" where you have to buy tickets and sign waivers. Just wouldn't happen here in the state that's the enemy of all things fun (Cali).

Precisely why I'm leaving CA for good.

Doesnt happen because people dont dig.
  • 1 0
@OtterSlyde: we dig, the land owners take it down; there is no room for mountain biking on public property.
