by YT Industries

Press Release: YT Industries

Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, one of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters on the planet, is not only known for sending his opponents to the deck of the cage but also enjoys sending it on his local trails on the mountain bike. YT Industries hooked the 36-year-old American up with a sick custom-painted Capra to send it into the New Year on.

 Peter Jamison
Doanld Cerrone's All-American Custom Capra

Freeride legend Cam Zink represented the YT Family and stopped by Cowboy’s ranch to drop off a brand-new custom-specced and All-American camo-painted Capra 29. Cerrone, who is already in preparation for a big fight coming up in January, took the time to spend some time with Zink and go for a ride.

bigquotesI tell my guys that if you are not scared to death at least once a day, then we are doing something wrong. I like the mental growth of making yourself do things that you normally wouldn’t do within your comfort zone. The better you get and the more in shape you get the harder you can push it. I remember the first time hitting little jumps. Now, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. That to me is what I love the most. It keeps you young. When the old man comes knocking, I just don’t let him in.Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone

bigquotesI enjoy the downhill adrenaline, white-knuckle riding of mountain biking. But I also enjoy the crazy physical side of the uphill climbing, geared towards the training camp. It is just another avenue I can pursue and not be in the gym lifting weights or running. I can use it as a crazy intense leg and endurance work out. It is also great training mentally. You get tired and fatigued going up, on the way down you need to be able to answer all the questions of jumping, pulling, sitting, turning, lifting. There is so much that has to go into staying sharp, because you know that if there is any ill play, you are going OTB.Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone

bigquotesNew Mexico is where we live and have all our bikes. We have ridden in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Las Vegas, Canada and down in Mexico. There is lots of good riding down here on the border. I would say Vancouver and Whistler are the best when it is all about fun. But I also like trails that aren’t really that groomed. New Mexico and Colorado have some awesome trails. There is a place called Otero Canyon here and it is pretty gnarly. It is probably my favorite place to ride. The rockier, the better. I especially enjoy having to pick your lines when riding uphill.Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone

oh how nice of them to give a millionaire a free bike, no doubt the dude deserves a free bike. Give the bike to a kid that can't afford it, not some mega UFC star. What a bunch of you tube marketing fluff, obviously they are hoping to capatalize on his YT and instgram following. Love Zink, but seriously this made me cringe.
  • 126 69
 bitter much?
  • 151 92
@mobil1syn: Yeah, I am bitter seeing a extremely well off individual get given a bike like its some kind of f*cking charity. The dude is clearly so passionate about bikes that he isn't even willing to drop the money to make a custom one. This is so clearly YTbikes trying to capitalize on the fact that they heard "OMG some UFC fighter likes bikes"...and he has million+ instagram followers. anything to get those clicks I guess.

@mobil1syn: yes I do... and I am calling it as I see it. did you miss the "youtube marketting fluff" part in my first comment? Comment still stands, the dude could buy 20 of these bikes without hurting his bank account. Maybe they could make a series of this, give bikes to a bunch of wealthy athletes that are semi passionate about this sport.

@Biocoug1 Did I hurt your feelings insulting your fighter man?

 @acdownhill:
Just be happy for the guy for getting a bike Bro.
Do you buy lunch for every homeless person you walk by or something? Or can you even reach that far down from your High Horse?

YT teamed up with Sram this year to do a dream build fundraiser for the World Bike Relief. WBR already has somewhere around 500,000 bikes out in the world and a raffle like this will bring in a good amount of money and will allow WBR to get even more bikes out to there.

What have you done in 2019?

Cam has a job...Cam is so much cooler than this Cowboy dude as well. Not impressed with him.

I get what you're saying @acdownhill but if you watch the way that big companies operate, this type of thing happens all the time. It's almost entirely a marketing scheme to advance their brand beyond the world of mtb and bring in more customers. Other examples are people like Ken Block with specialized or Reggie Miller with Santa Cruz.
  • 49 9
@acdownhill: no dude, your whining and you obviously have no idea how much charity has been done on either side. I can't speak for YT charity practices, but Cowboy is one of the most giving UFC fighters. He does tons and tons charity and has children's foundations set up and has donated and raised millions, more than YT has I am sure.

I said man GTFO because you opened your mouth without learning about whom you are speaking about.

@TheBearDen: the dude could buy a hundred bikes. why does he need a custom bike that even half of the f*cking sponsored WC riders out there don't even get the privilege of having? Just seems needlessly over the top and clearly just a driver to get more media attention.

That's great they are doing that, and I don't recall saying anywhere that YT doesn't do anything for the world. they have a lot of great programs and initiatives. This is just so starkly in contrast to that mentality of giving to the less fortunate that it just makes me cringe.

Like I said, I love Zink, and he is just doing his job as a rider/ambassador for the company. and I am hardly calling to boycott YT or anything. In my opinion it was a lame publicity stunt.

As for what I have done this year...well I don't need to boast about it on the internet. Plus anything I say will not be sufficient to you anyways I am sure.
  • 27 1
@Biocoug1: you remember when Reebok fined him a shit ton of money for sticking that veterans flag on his shorts so he came out and was like "if Reebok takes the money they fined me and gives to charity, I'll match it"

How many of us have gotten a speeding ticket and said "give it to charity and I'll match it" lol none of us. Lol
  • 26 0
@TheBearDen: yes, I do. That's why I love Cowboy. He is all about the kids and charity, anyone opening their mouth otherwise doesnt have one single clue.

Plus he is a self admitted grandma's boy. Cowboy is an amazing human.

@TannerValhouli: Oh I felt the exact same about those guys getting those bikes as well. although I maybe didn't comment on the article. I get it, its business as usual, but as a consumer I am also allowed to have express my opinion about their advertisement. and I am trying to tell YT that for some people, seeing them give bikes to mega stars is not attracting my business.

@Biocoug1 I didn't say anyone involved was a bad person for doing it. Just stating the facts, the dude clearly could afford to build a custom bike for himself, but he isn't THAT passionate about bikes. Thats awesome he donates to so much, and I am sure he is a decent human being. sorry I hit such a soft spot for you, and I am sure the "cowbow" appreciates the back up.
  • 15 4
@acdownhill: you should boast about it on the internet. Giving to others is something you can absolutley be proud of and it's an opportunity to list the charities that you feel mean the most.

I work with our local food bank, our homeless shelters, Sunday community dinners at the local church, give money to children's hospital, give money to an organization that gets more kids out riding. I do what I can with what I have and I'm proud of it.

Just don't come in here and shit all over a company for giving A guy a bike when both parties involved do plenty for charities and all that. Or maybe express your feelings of that money being better spent elsewhere in a less attacking method.

Come in hot and people are gonna fire back.
  • 15 3

If you're gonna shame YT and Cerrone with your marketing morals then at least be consistent and do it on every marketing article that Pinkbike posts.

@acdownhill: your soft bud. No one cares work harder. You act like this dude is getting a free ride. This guy has 10 times the work ethic that you do and deserves everything that come to him. By your logic all sponsored riders that make a ton of money shouldn’t get sauced free equipment.

I actually think it's pretty cool. Someone super well known in a totally different sport, being given a cool bike from a cool bike company. Gets Mountain biking in front of loads of people and gets more people into the sport. And no matter what people say here, it's probably going to help YT sell more bikes so it's a win win.

This is brilliant. @acdownhill calls out this cheesy bullcrap for what it really is and people get on his bum for not being stoked. I am not sure what is more toxic here, but your easy to see through pseudo positivity is just making this whole affair smell worse.

I am sure he does a lot of amazing things (apparently anyways) , I have no doubt he works hard (like any pro athlete) and loves his grandma. Don't recall ever refuting any of these things in the first place...lol

But god damn is it ever a cheesy click bait video. Would he have ever even received this thing if he hadn't just announced some major match he was about to be in? Was his passion for the sport the reason he got the bike? was his charitable moments the reason he got the bike? No idea because the video didn't elaborate on why he is receiving a nicer bike than half their factory team...because a marketing video is all this shit is.

Anyways looks like I triggered a bunch of people by having a opinion, that's fine...nothing new!

Meh, I guess it's cool that he rides and is probably pretty good at it. Of all the guys that were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, he is one of the few who has gone out of his way to seek challenges and overcome what most people are afraid of.
He seems like a good dude overall, no?
  • 12 6
@Ian713: Never once said he didn't seem like a good dude, not sure why people seem to think thats the point I am trying to make.

What I was getting at is it comes off as a desperate attempt for attention from YT. the way I see it is nothing more than this

1. YT knows a certain UFC fighter has a little interest in bikes
2. fighter publicly announces MAJOR match this week
3. YT gives him a super high end custom bike, in hopes he will post it to instagram
4. profit?

I mean I understand that this is just business, but I cringe at a lot of commercials on TV and this is no different. No
different than why I should give a shit matthew mcconaughey drives a Lincoln...(even though he probably doesn't)

I got rid of Cable for exactly that reason, I was sick of cringe worthy advertisement being shoved down my throat, and celebrity endorsement that I could not care less about. I'm more than happy with my 5 year old bike with its outdated standards and "old geometry" because Im not sucking at the tit of ever lame advertisement that this stupid industry tries to sell you on.

As a user of pinkbike, and a rider/potential YT customer I am allowed to have an opinion on the advertising they do and what my thoughts are about it. I never once said boycott YT, or that he was a bad person., just that this type of advertisement does nothing for me.

@acdownhill: The president of YT - in case you didn’t know- is a beefed up muscle head and presumably an MMA fan too. He probably heard Cowboy already owned a YT and saw a chance at another viral promo giveaway. They blew a million on the GoatSucker murderer vid, Christopher Walken vid and give people like Harry Main (bmx) bikes just cause he has (had*) a big YouTube following...... the YT guy just thinks way outside the box, and it seems to work for him.

@acdownhill: Welcome to PB where you can join the annoyed, unemployed and 15 year olds that know everything about everything, in conversation. Id suggest not using logic here. Attention spans are small within this group so anything over a quick one liner pretty much goes unread.... unless its (Below Threshold). Try all CAPS and keep it short. That seems to work for some guys. Keep your eyes peeled though. Chances are Wakidesigns will chime in somewhere (like he does in every comment section). He loves the Thumbs down votes so be sure to give him one where ever you see his name. Most of all, try not to make good points or push the envelope on any perspective and you'll have fun here. Especially, stay away from trying to defend your comment. They can smell a wound and they go in for the kill to try to make you crack in minutes. You can almost hear, "Fresh Fish!  better this than some instagram influencer doing mommy blogs. This guy works his tail off for his money. He excels at arguably one of the most difficult sports in the world. He has earned himself a free bike.

Here's how marketing works: You can spend $500,000 to get a bike in front of 1M pairs of eyes, or you can give a bike to a celebrity (costing you ~$3500 in goods and video production) and get the same (or higher) level of engagement.

You're a shining example of not being able to please the crowd. YT just saved a fortune on their marketing budget so that they can keep their costs low for consumers, and you're out here complaining about it.

Cerrone also appears to be severely politically confused and uneducated, advocating for unions when Republicans traditionally try to kill union influence. He also has compared Trump to Connor McGregor? He very accurately describes his political knowledge when he admits "I don't know."

Elite mma trainers and elite facility owners are a very small community, when the Lloyd Irvin story came out, people were scrambling to distance themselves from him because EVERYONE is connected. People just train, they don't screen each and every potential client as to what their political views are.

The cross-sport exposure is nothing but good. While this video was a bit lukewarm, Cowboy is one of the more beloved folks in the UFC, and there are other fighters (Diaz brothers) that mountain bike to cross-train as well. Why not cross promote? While our sports are vastly different, respect to the high level of athleticism and endurance that goes into being a pro in each. Not sure i understand that negativity from Pinkbike on this. If some mma fans start paying attention to mountain bike content, that's a win. Last time i checked they can sustain millions of payperview buys for their events and put on high quality productions...and the bike community cannot beyond what Redbull does.

I noticed nobody asked Zinc what he thought about the cowboy's MTB skill! I was hoping Zinc would try and back flip that horse down a cliff.

Dude I lost it at the last sentence! ????

Everyone complaining about Cowboy getting a bike but mentioned Zink’s horse handling skills are pretty legit. The horse would probably hold up better than that RM Slayer did in the bike test.

First Zink names his Rampage line "the Republican," and now free bikes for millionaire UFC fighters that support Trump? Also keep in mind that UFC's Dana White says he would never say anything critical about our President who was impeached for abusing his power and attempting to cheat an election.

As far as I'm concerned Zink is riding for Vladimir Putin, not YT. Fake Patriot.

@tpg512: You mean the tax scam for the wealthy and large corporations? Trump's tax scam that has exploded the budget deficit and put us on a path to bankruptcy? My taxes actually went up so quit pretending it helped the middle class.

Another one of Trump's blowjobs for Putin has been to promote the illegitimate conspiracy theory that Ukraine was behind 2016 election interference and not Russia:

All of Trump's corrupt roads lead to Russia, and all the fake patriots do is hide behind Trump's lies and the flag.

  • 2 0
I think it’s great he’s getting a dream bike and he sounds like a very giving individual. At first glance of the story I started reacting negatively and started making up my own story on why does he get one and not some other caring individual. It would be nice if the story itself contained info on why he was chosen to get a bike and the great things he does. Context does help. I’m happy for the dude!!
  • 3 0
I will say... bikes are damned sexy now.

You know that a ton of motobros who follow UFC and this dude on instagram are going to be like, "Damn.. I'd like to have me one of them bikes."
  • 1 3
@Hogfly: I doubt it. Most of them would probably rather punch, kick, or wrestle somebody, but only after a prolonged series of personal threats and insults.

Selling more bikes does not necessarily equate to improving the sport.
  • 5 3
Cowboy should ride with the Diaz Bros.

If YT was a Russian or Ukrainian company, maybe I’d get my panties in a bunch.

But c’mon, at least Cerrone rides a bike and loves the Stars and Stripes. Maybe he already has some YTs
in the stable. Who cares.

Look, I have two close friends of mine that were turned onto mountain biking because of seeing other guys in other sports do it. One of them watched some video that had ex NHL hockey player Trevor Linden riding MTB and another was a crossfitter that happened to see one of the recent games where I guess there was an MTB or cyclocross course. Apparantly some of them (crossfit stars) talked about how much they loved mountain biking to break up their training and then this guy got into it because of that. Neither of them went out before when I told them it was fun but when they saw other stars that's what got them going. Point being, I think the overall effect of a video like this could be positive to get exposure to the sport to people that otherwise might miss out. Yeah it's marketing I know but still might have a good spin off.
  • 2 1
Meruca Fuck Yeah, whooooo, Rock n roll, explosions and girls in bikinis even though it's 30 degrees out yeah!!! Oh, wait. I thought that part of the video was going to play next... Kinda agree with some, silly giving millionaires 15 thousand dollar bikes... on the flip side Cowboy seems like one of the good guys in a sport with more than a few bad apples who keep getting 2nd chances over, and over, and over, and over... And I'd like to think he'll pass on the Goodwill...
  • 1 0
Guy gets free bike which has a spin off for various individuals and organizations involved, including charities and so forth. Sure a marketing PR spin which might just, maybe get some people onto bikes who might never had considered getting a bike. Didn't see anyone complaining when rockstars were getting handed out top shelf MTB's back in the 90's.

Ugh I hate unnecessary violence, the UFC, all the losers who are into it and everything it stands for; to me, mountain biking is the polar opposite of such garbage, having peaceful fun surrounded by nature.
  • 7 1
Funny. I enjoy watching the UFC and I like riding bikes. And snowboards for that matter. My favorite thing in the world is to stand looking down at an open forest of snow with no noise and no one around. Peaceful. Natural. But after a day of riding I don't mind a few beers while watching people kick each other in the face.
