Video: Cam Zink's 110 Foot World Record Backflip Crash

Aug 13, 2019
by Sarah Moore

bigquotesI was reluctant to show the footage from last year flipping 110 feet for a cell phone video because it was all just progress toward 150 feet. It wasn't the goal and I really didn't want anyone to see it until I flipped 150 feet... After my crash last week I decided to put it in here since we are showing everything along the way. After my 100 foot flip in Mammoth, a lot of people said I made it look too easy. Well, that's the goal. When it goes well it kind of is easy. Things go right and it works, but you can't see all the weeks leading up to it and all the work we put in to make it look that easy. The few people I showed the 110-foot flip that I landed said I made it look easy, too... Well, it isn't.

The air time on it is around 2.4 second... For example, the 90-foot dirt doubles at LooseFest were around 1.9 seconds. Nearly 30% more. I'm learning real quick how much bigger 150 feet will be than 100.

I'm super fortunate to have walked away from it with a very minor concussion and a separated AC in my shoulder. But my actual shoulder joint, and what I had surgery on last November is solid still! And the AC is a minor injury that heals pretty quickly. I'll be back and we'll keep chipping away!

His GF looks like she's tired of going to the hospital with him...
  • 180 0
 So is his wife.
  • 18 0
lol.. routine.. kid's hospital entertainment packs on stand-by.. probably has X-ray equipment named after him there in Reno.. Evil Knievel lives on..
  • 7 0
Probably, but if you watch the documentary about him that came out a few years ago you know that she fully realized what she was getting into with him. She knows the deal.

Yeah, even earlier in the video she didn't look amused at all, like she know how this was going to end. At least, it's not a bad bad injury.
  • 3 2
Them there hospitals know how to fleece ya !
  • 8 1
@evildos: I mean, probably she's just worried about him because she loves him? Is there anything harder than to seeing your loved ones suffering? And at the 11:10 she looks relaxed again after things cleared up.

I am always late to the party due to Cameron not telling us, his parents, about this crash stuff. I have watched him crash for almost 30 years, and regarding some of the comments in this article as to why he does it , it's simple, he has an Evil Knievel type personality. I remember 1974 when I was a young guy, being in Twin Falls, Idaho watching Evil Knievel as he tried to jump the Snake River Canyon. It did not end well. Cameron has an Evil Knievel persona, but he is more talented than Evil in his respective sport. Evil crashed about every jump, but he did it anyway. Thank God Cameron only crashes now and then. One of Cameron's early grade school teachers said that Cameron is going to jump off a cliff no matter what you say or do, so it's just that you have to guide him to the right cliff.

@royhud: you can't hold 'em back
  • 3 0
@royhud: I’ll take council from that. I have a 10 yr old girl who similarly knows no limits. Thank you for those 10000 miles / year, without which we wouldn’t have Cam as we know him. Oh, apologies for some of the comments here, ( @PhoS )
  • 100 22
Jesus man...why? You have nothing to prove at this point. Give your family a break man.
  • 29 3
doing it for himself no doubt!
  • 48 7
 Guess what feeds his kids...
  • 57 1
@lostlunchbox: I guess the point is that I hope he keeps feeding them not the other way around.
  • 8 11
 Bills gotta be paid...
  • 10 4
Just don't die or turn into a vegetable. I really enjoy your runs at Rampage.
  • 26 4
I... can't see the point of this project. The risk vs. reward tradeoff here seems lousy, and that's being generous... On the flipside, if this is who he is (and I think we've established that at this point...), then so be it. Hope you stay healthy and someday find peace in dialing it back.
  • 8 2
@shredddr: keyword: peace. Can't always be found without a battle.
  • 1 1
@shredddr: Thats my perspective as well. Rampage I get it...risk it all no doubt as the payoff is there. This seems kinda like that Mammoth thing he did a couple years ago. We all watched the 12 second clip of Kyle following him but nobody has ever talked about that since.

Stay safe Cam - the flip in Rad Company (your first shot of the Utah segment when you were on Hyper still) is IMO the sickest thing you've ever done.
  • 37 4
Everytime I see some rider taking their family to Rampage it makes me cringe. It is like buying your alcoholic friend a bottle of Whiskey. Oh it can go really wrong but look how happy we made him!
  • 3 0
@MikeyMT: yeah, but, when you've grown up riding bikes for a living, you don't necessarily have a lot of transferable skills... I'd bet he enjoys the challenge too, it's what got him here in the first place. And there are plenty of more dangerous jobs done by people with families. Maybe, if it works for him, that's ok?
  • 17 9
Well look at all the keyboard cowboys judging a life lived, he is doing his thang. When did pushing the limits of the human experience become a bad thang?
  • 12 13
@Bomadics: You said thang too much.

This sucks. I bet if you asked him he'd prefer a way to make a living in the cycling industry that didn't involve playing the broken bone lottery.
  • 16 4
maybe he does feel like he has more too prove? and as for his family...

kid 1: "see that man over there with the scars on his shoulders? Got them backflipping a swamp full of burning crocodiles on a bike. that's my dad!"

kid 2: "see that 150kg man over there? got that gut sitting on the couch watching other people do awesome stuff. that's my dad..."
  • 4 0
@MikeyMT: the unbelievable step down/mega drop huck at the end of his Rad Company segment is also up there.
  • 8 0
I'd rather risk my life doing something cool like this, instead of risking my life working monotonously in some oil and gas plant.
  • 9 2
There are some people in this world that don't stop at dreaming because if they stop there, they might as well give up on life. Some people have a fire inside that most people will never understand and that is what keeps them going in life. The people in their life who surround them understand that, that's why they are in their life in the first place. Would you say the same about the top DH guys that risk life and limb for nothing more than to beat the clock... If it weren't for people like Zink, there wouldn't be heros and legends, they would just be you or me....
  • 3 1
@dirtyoldclown: spot on! these comments are bringing me down, am I on Pinkbike!?
  • 4 0
@Dethphist: are those my only two options? Maybe that’s the case here. I’d try to find some middle ground. Wade Simmons rides bikes every day (probably) and gets paid to do so.
  • 3 1
Rampage is more important than this stunt. A lot better for his career too.
  • 9 1
@dirtyoldclown: kid 3: this is my dad - he likes riding bikes and is healthy enough to ride with us kids today - isn't that cool?

I know which option I'll take...
  • 4 5
@Bomadics: "When did pushing the limits of the human experience become a bad thang?"

Pushing the limits where? At cycling? At activity that brings fun for you and giving a money for you??
What about limits in some other stuff like science, education, medical, ... where your pushed limits potentialy will help others?!..
  • 4 1
@jasminov: pushing limits have many faces, like plastic surgery. For now, quite amazingly Jennifer Aniston is still doing fine. And Cam is kind of in her league. Ultimately I don’t care much and wish him all the best of achievements and health. Even if he takes his riding to Kylie Minogue’s current beauty level...
  • 2 2
@WAKIdesigns: Waki, hitting 110-ten word backflips every hour.
  • 1 1
@jasminov: @WAKIdesigns Mountain biking is all about pushing your personal limits, that is what makes this sport fun! Now if you want to talk about that other stuff I would suggest a more appropriate forum for those topics than Pink Bike, which is of course dedicated to Mountain Biking and cycle related information.

That said I think the scientists at the lab may be slightly intimidated by Cam when he show's up to do his thing for science, and the boys at the Large Hadron Collider may frown when he backflips the most recent particle collision, but hey anything to help others yes?
  • 2 1
@WAKIdesigns: Dude come back to the future, you are stuck in the 90's with your bedroom posters, come back WAKI, come back!
  • 6 1
@Bomadics: pushing your personal limits, pfff, I just don’t like to read about crowd funders, stories of guys getting wrecked for life, saying about making small steps everyday, not taking anything for granted and other transcendental expressions only a fricking pervert can appreciate. I just don’t. I am not a kind of person who needs recreational empathy in his life. The Rampage when Paul Bas broke his back was so sketchy it was disgusting to watch and I turned it off rather quickly. Rogatkin fell off a cliff, stood up and rode again and people fkng cheered. Really?!

So quite frankly watching these guys doing such stuff is like watching hollywood actress get old, I just wonder, how fkng deluded can everyone involved be to not see that they will not be able to see when it will go too far and it will backfire, folks will puke.

Again, it’s their lives, I just cannot imagine support anyone supporting a clown show with dire consequences. It’s basically turning real life into an episode of Simpsons where the clown gets smashed and everyone is laughing, and the biggest allure is that you actually shouldn’t been laughing because it’s tragic. And it’s fine cuz it’s a cartoon, except this here isn’t. And I have memories of a few a*sholes burned into my mind, who would go and say: meh, that looked easy. You gotta go bigger. It’s the same kind telling you you can have another beer since you already puked, will leave you fkd up alone in the pub and laugh at you the day after. Good luck going through life listening to them.

@WAKIdesigns: ALL entertainment, sports, pretty actresses, politics are a distraction, like the old days in the Roman Coliseums. These are activities that keep the common man occupied while the worlds leaders, the real ones, not the jackasses on the news, do whatever they want while we argue about trite things like extreme sports.

There will always be a taste for the extreme, that is until real life gets crazy enough to drown out the crap like Rampage, and Jennifer Aniston. Don't be distracted but the shiny ornaments, or the heroic stunts, it's ALL Bullshit. I don't admire Cam Zink for risking life and limb in a sport, I admire him for pushing his personal boundaries, this is what we need more of in every aspect of the world. People willing to risk their neck pushing the limits. What about race car drivers, stuntmen, mountain climbers, arctic explorers, with your philosophy they are all clown shows too?

Can you imagine what a billionaire could do if he actually cared about people, or a drug company that wanted to cure people, not just mask their symptoms. The folks in Hong Kong right now are pushing the limits, risking life and limb, where do you draw the line for stupidity, just mountain biking, or all sports that you consider clown shows?

All I am saying is he is pushing limits, how he lives is life is up to him. I would not judge your life nor expect you to judge mine, as we are all lacking in some aspect of life. It's like watching a horror movie, not something I enjoy doing, having all that blood and violence in my head, but I don't condemn others for their lack of humanity by watching them, that is their path. Don't support Cam in his crazy quest that's fine, but at least try not to fill that void with negative energy that does no one, especially yourself, any good at all.
  • 2 1
@Bomadics: f*ck, the point about billionaires is spot on. Where does responsibility begin and end? Most of the rich just happen to be lucky bastards. What they could achieve in terms of improving many lives compared to Zink not killing himself accidentally is insane. It pales into insignificance that this guy is risking death while entertaining a few people.
He seems to be in his comfort zone anyway.
  • 2 1
@Bomadics: Holy sht, from Jennifer Aniston to mind control, wow. Please, you are unfair to Jennifer. She is pushing her own limits of being a 30yr old single. And she’s damn good at it.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: Dude, no problem, I hope you and Jennifer are very happy!
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: @Bomadics: Great points from both of you. There is a fine line between pushing the limits of what's possible and giving in to pressure to perform for people who see you as nothing more than an object for their entertainment. The lack of humanity displayed by people who live their lives on the simple principle of seeking pleasure and avoiding pain is astounding, and I am a firm believer that those in power encourage this behavior. Keeps people distracted and spending money, a win-win.
  • 1 0
 @shredddr: “on the flipside” lol
  • 2 0
I lost my stomach for this shit when McGazza snapped his leg riding down stairs in China. These guys need a way to make a living in this business that doesn’t involve what amounts to almost certain hospital stays.
  • 1 0
I thought if I posted something like this I would be way off. Your point is right on! Just quit fooling around nobody needs these records. It's a hard pill to accept Semenuk or Rheeder define style and Lacondeguy pure moto with no engine. Give your family a break and just ride for yourself
  • 2 0
@Bomadics: "What about race car drivers, stuntmen, mountain climbers, arctic explorers, with your philosophy they are all clown shows too?"
explorers in one sentence with all those others? seriously?..
  • 2 0
@jasminov: what exactly needs exploring or climbing now, they are climbing for their ego's. You are just digging for some grain to attack me on because I annoy you.

Did you read the post? I am not sure you understood what I was saying. The context was people pushing the limits, not comparing those disciplines, or did you just read the one scentence?
  • 2 0
@BenPea: Zink risking life and limb is his choice, greed is something we all suffer for. But we are complicit, we just sit here riding our bikes, commenting on this forum like it means something. So that is why I don't condemn Cam for his choices, it's not like we are all out there trying to change anything are we?
  • 2 0
 @Bomadics: Yep, I'm with you.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Great that is two of us on board, what shall we change first, our underwear?
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: Why not start here? And why not be out there trying to change things?

Companies and individuals read these forums and try to understand what happens out on the trails. Knowing what people value and want is the best way to sell things to them and know what to perform to get the most views and attention. If we as riders and consumers draw a line and stop supporting clown shows then guess what, the market for clowns dies and people stop risking their lives for money because it is no longer valued. We the consumers have the power to control the market.
  • 1 0
@highfivenwhiteguy: I'm not sure this Zink flip thing is about any market.
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: things aren't that bad, surely.
  • 1 0
@highfivenwhiteguy: You need to find out a bit more about the way the world works, how the current world economic health is, and what the next 5 years is going to look like.

CONSUMING is the problem, not sports events. We are living in an unsustainable system that is way beyond broken, you had better clip in the for next bit of this planet's trail, it's going to get gnarly!
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Worse than you could, or are likely to imagine, much, much worse. Like that post about single use plastics, no one in the comments has a clue what they are talking about.
  • 1 0
@BenPea: Yes and no. I agree that Zink's flip seems to be more about personal goals and achievement but it also acts as a conversation starter for what is expected of professional athletes. Zink and other riders are walking billboards, they are a vehicle for companies to advertise and sell products to a market.
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: I was trying to be optimistic! I usually fall into the "we're all f***ed" mindset but that doom and gloom doesn't exactly inspire people to try and fix anything. My intention was not to say stop supporting sport events but to change how we react to them and what we expect out of them.
  • 1 0
@highfivenwhiteguy: That's cool and I get what you are going for, but changing the way things work means changing the way the money system works. This is a difficult thing to do, especially in the US.

Do you know how the money system works down there, for instance where the Interest on the US debt winds up when it's paid, and who owns the US Federal Reserve?
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: ha ha ha , he lost it.Anyhow Zink s obedient, he s making 'murica Great again! ... never fails to dissapoint.
  • 1 0
@Bomadics: "You are just digging for some grain to attack me on because I annoy you."
No, seriously!

"The context was people pushing the limits,"
Pushing limits is not the same as stupidity and nonsense actions. Don't mix those things.
  • 33 0
Classic story. JRA and looped out on this little 110' jib.
  • 29 1
 Crash is at 7 minutes
  • 27 4
for what it's worth, I personally don't need to see someone risk their health/life on an arbitrarily set milestone. You're awesome just the way you are. I know you're involved in the bike biz now and what better way to walk another path that doesn't include that much risk. Wanna see you turn into an old man, dude. I don't buy this flame out young crap. Live long and prosper! I know you'll do what you feel you gotta do. Just thought you might want to hear from a stranger in the crowd.
  • 15 1
Just shows what these guys go through pushing limits. Tough as nails. Regarding the family thing. Thats what pays their bills. Plenty of other dads do hazardous jobs too. I recon it's still statistically more dangerous to be middle aged, overweight and sedentary like most dads.
  • 17 5
when the first dude wiped out and busted his handle bar, that should've been a signal to be like, 'lets chill for the day' but as soon as he attempts to flip right after, he over rotates the flip lol. his wife must be really patient
  • 12 3
I think he's the one who spends more time being patient.
  • 2 1
 @metaam: BOOM BOOM
  • 26 11
Cam , you have a family now jeez..
  • 8 6
Why the down votes? I support anyone risking it for personal goals if that’s their choice. I will say though that having a family changes a lot.
  • 2 0
@cougar797: Pull up Cougar. You're too low Cougar!
  • 17 4
You went full Peter Pan. Never go full Peter Pan. Don’t do another Zink man... listening to a bunch of a*sholes telling you 100ft looked easy. Really? Fkng really?
  • 1 0
so so goood ! your point is right on ! and yeah the american culture at high. " legends " are legends because they die.
  • 17 4
 "...with a very minor concussion..."
What does that even mean? C'mon Zink, you don't need to be doing this shit. Not for this fan at least.
  • 6 1
My thoughts exactly - there is no such thing. Protect your brain folks, and please don't take it for granted.
  • 7 0
I see a lot of commenters here that frankly just don't get it. Of course he loves his family and wants to stay safe for them. And they also love him, and don't want him to stop being who he is to protect them. He's one of the all-time greats, and as long as he's doing this for himself (not sponsor pressure or any BS like that), I don't see any problem with that. Yea his job is risky but that's just part of the game. It's not for everyone.
  • 12 6
I don’t like telling folks how to live their lives but no parent should be attempting stunts like this. I’m all for pushing the limits in extreme sports, but you gotta think about your loved ones who depend on you. He brings his kid out there on the wrong day and Junior has a front row seat to watch dad die or end up a quadriplegic.
  • 7 1
Have any of you been following him on his YT channel? The guy has plenty going on, Sensus, flipping houses, pro rider etc....

He is not doing this because he is f*cking insecure about some random dickweeds opinion about the 100 footer looking easy. He is not doing this stuff because his sponsors want him to .Hell, none of his sponsors are supporting this endeavor.

He has a need to push boundaries, to push personal limits. He is calculated, he is determined, he is focused and he is badass.

I will leave you with a couple words spoken by better men than me.

One Thing That Cycling Has Taught Me Is That If You Achieve Something Without A Struggle It’s Not Going To Be Satisfying” – Greg LeMond

If You Do Something Right The First Time, Then It’s Not Hard Enough” – Danny MacAskill
  • 1 0
Are you for real with that ? Smile )))) OMG you fried it well Rys .
  • 1 0
@barbarosza: Yup, 100% real with that. I would also bet that Cam is as well. His father confirmed as much in a post above.
  • 1 0
 @FriedRys:

O.MG o was being sarcastic. And yeah I read what his dad had to say on it.

Okay I get your point he has that " evil kanievel" in him. Still to me it's plain stupid, but maybe that's just my point of view
  • 7 3
Go for it Zink!!! Don't pay any attention to these ridiculous comments, men are a dying breed.... I'm sure your kids think you are superman and your vision has been the catalyst. I'm truly amazed at this cringe culture that can take a simple comment about it being easy and equate that to your entire reason for trying to accomplish something new. And I guess that you and Rachel will have to make a video to put these minds at ease that she isn't made at you!! What is happening here at PINKBIKE!!!!

Keep haulin! Would be terrible to have something bad happen, but if nailing rowdy booters is who you are then that’s who you are. Changing who you are before your ready to move on can have a worse effect on your life and those around you.
  • 4 2
 Gnarly.
But I wish people would stop saying "minor" concussion. Ok, only a "minor" brain injury, but its still a significant condition, and people watching should realize you can have major effects from a "minor" concussion.
Heal up and stay safe.
  • 2 0
Exactly. RIP Dave Mirra. Stay safe out there.

Cam, you are rad. Stoked the shoulder joint is still solid! I don't watch crash footage, so I'll wait in anticipation for when you nail the 150!
  • 5 3
I can't see doing this when you have a family that depends on you. Some immense talent here but you have to know your limits, don't end up paralyzed for an attempt at glory.
  • 2 2
Hey PinkBike thanks for erasing my comment earlier. The carbon renthal bar snaps easily, I have seen it at least 5 times and yes renthal I think its time to do some thing about that. Renthal should change that design its breaking on people

Cam is already a legend in the sport. Sad that he has to keep doing this kind of thing to stay relevant. Cam, you've got a family and at a point it becomes irresponsible to continue risking your well being to get noticed. In the biking world you are a celebrity. Figure out a different path to success without risking your life. Cam McCaul, Steve Peat, Mannon Carpenter. No disrespect intended, Cam Zink is a hero.
