Video: Cannondale Factory Racing at the 2020 Cape Epic in 'A Dream on Hold'

by Ed Spratt

bigquotesThe pinnacle of mountain bike stage racing is the Absa Cape Epic, a grueling seven-day affair in the Western Cape of South Africa. This year’s cross-country race route would traverse roughly 700 kilometers, with 15,000 meters of vertical ascent, over some of the most unforgiving trails with unimaginable scenery around every single bend.

Cannondale Factory Racing teammates Henrique Avancini and Manuel Fumic, and a dedicated supporting team were set to take on their fifth attempt for the top step in the world’s most difficult mountain bike race. For Fumic, the 2020 edition was to be his last attempt before retirement. The team was more prepared than ever with an all-or-nothing approach, but the global pandemic put a halt to their dreams as the race was cancelled just before it was set to begin.

This is their story of dedication, togetherness and solidarity as the ultimate goal was put on hold for something larger than sport. The journey isn't over, it's just on hold.

Now imagine people like the amateurs that where saving money to “race” cape epic for the first time in their life’s all the expectations they had ,even I when some kind of event that I expected to do and then it’s canceled because of some kind of thing feel sad because the expectations that I put on the even. HEY FUMIC ,there is always next year or even 2 years from now ,you are still young :-)))

Epic! Sorry for Mani and the team. So many emotions. Is Mani going for EWS maybe next years?

I know that they're supposed to be great, but something about that Lefty looks just so wrong.

 They aren't great.

Personally having one, I think the lefty is okay, just a little weird to get used to. You can definitely feel the loss of a stanchion on the trail, but I have no major complaints in performance, and it’s hella stiff.

@Chase-mcnal: please elaborate on what it feels like to lose a stanchion

Nothing makes people abandon all logic like the lefty. It’s fascinating.

I’d like to see more of jump scene - cancel epic replace it with a dirt jumping contest on XC bikes...
