Exactly, this is a motorcycle. If pinkbike could do us all a favour and say NO to the E bike perversion from industry. This slow passive aggressive advertising style of "look hot chick and zombies..yaaa" is normally forgivable. When it comes to E bikes, please just stop it now.
Call us ignorant all you want but unless you have a physical disability, an e-bike is a motorbike.
If you do have a physical disability and an e-bike helps gets you mobile and into nature that is a great application; however, something like a special exemption permit should be required by your local association.
In terms of trail maintenance issues, user conflict etc. until these issues are addressed, the only ones who are ignorant will be the industry marketers who push them before due diligence is established.
Im not sure which industry marketers you are referring to. Which company is suggesting that everyone should ride these? I also fail to see how trail maintenance will be an issue? If your argument is that the greater torque generated by the wheel is a deciding factor of these bikes causing additional wear and tear, than Im calling BS until you lay down some factual evidence. Im not denying that these have potential to cause more trail abuse, however, i feel pretty confident that it will be a marginal increase.
Are you aware that E-bikes have speed limiters? In Canada this limit is set at a federal level to 32km/h. That means the bike will only assist you up to that speed. If you want to go faster, you get no additional support, and must put in all the energy yourself. Motor bikes do not have such limiters...
It's really more the principle of the thing. You can rationalize it all you want, but it's not a rational argument to begin with! They are an abomination, and always will be. Mountain biking is human powered only. If you wanna motorbike, there's nothing wrong with that.
E-bike perversion! E-bike perversion! hate hate hate etc..
@Xyphota How many people with scooters take the limiters take off? A lot. How many people will bypass the limiters on their e-bikes? You'd be stupid not to. The argument about "oh, they will only be going 32km/h due the limiter " is pure BS. They are electronic motor bikes where the cranks replace the twist grip throttle. If you fail to see this will cause a trail maintenance issue you've got your head in the sand.
Pinkbike chooses what to publish on the front page from all of the other user submissions and industry vids. If there was no industry advertisement, what was the motivation to post the video?
The only way out of this is for PinkBike to start selling "No E Bikes" bumper stickers and T-shirts
@karatechris How much do motorized scooters cost? Not very much, so if you damage it, you can just replace it. You are not going to take the limiter off of a 5-6k machine, because you will void you warranty. That is not BS. How often would you want to be going faster than that speed anyways in a trail setting? If you feel the need to go 80km/h an hour on a bike trail, have fun. Many of my local trails can be hit at a certain maximum speed, and an e-bike does not increase that speed. With all the twists and turns, off-camber sections, attempting to go faster would result in loss of control! To delimit your bike, you have to reprogram it. I know it can be done, but say goodbye to your warranty!
And I want a feasible example of the additional maintenance. If anything, an E-bike would be a good tool to get trail equipment out to places where trail maintenance is needed, but there is no truck access.
@Xyphota I will answer your question by dodging it, and forming my own baseless accusation! How much are the E-bike lobbyists paying you to support this crime against humanity?
Pretty sure this is exactly what the marketers want, as any press is good press. The E-bike term is coined and will become a mainstay of MTB at this rate. The MTB hype machine is based on conflict: brand vs. brand, wheel sizes, "enduro", strava Take a hike E bike!
So far @Xyphota, all you've done is obfuscate and divert attention from the genuine, legitimate concerns regarding this trend. These are basically motorcycles. And there are reasons why motorbikes aren't allowed on multiuse trails.
Mountain bike manufacturers and sales people have a history of creating solutions for problems that never existed.
This is the next trend to sell to people who are sometimrs all too eager to give away their money, or for people who have no desire to experience the true benefits of the sport.
People got annoyed about 29ers and 27.5, but these E-"bikes" have people positively incensed, and for good reason.
So, instead of trying to spin all this to make the level-headed argument against these things look unreasonable, why don't YOU provide some reasons why we NEED them?
@MasterSlater Which concerns have I been diverting from addressing? I have attempted to address all of the comments that I felt needed addressing? Anywhos... Firstly, they are not basically motorcycles. The only thing they share in common is a power source, and a direct drive to the rear wheel. Again, once your past the limiter speed, its just a normal bicycle. I think that is something that everybody is forgetting? Have you seriously considered what that actually means? Just think about it. The only real advantage of this bike is that you can now climb way more without getting tired. Thats it. These bikes get people incensed because there is a lack of understanding about what they actually do, and that is impart due to lack of information. Unless youve actually seen one up close or ridden one, all information regarding these bikes is all from advertisements, or articles from sites such as this.
In response to the last part of your post, I do not think that we NEED them. I am not trying to sell them, I could care less if you have one. But Im not going to get my blood boiling if a rider riding one, passes me whilst riding up hill. If riding to the top of your trail is an integral part of your ride, great! Good for you! But not everybody who rides bikes is in it for a heart wrenching workout. Not everybody who rides bikes is as fit as you. Some people have disabilities, some people might use it as a means to potentially get in shape. You cant just throw the idea out the window because most die-hard mountain bikers arent going to buy one. Because guess what? They arent marketed towards you. I have yet to hear a legitimate argument about why they should be banned.
Will I personally ever ride one as my main mountain bike? no. I would buy one so any of my friends and family who do not avidly ride bikes as much as I do, can come with me and enjoy nature how I do.
Well... Props for one of the most cringe worthy ads I've seen in a long time I guess...
But it does raise a good point, if the world was to come to an end I would probably give an e-bike a shot because there would be no one left to see me using it. And whoever was left would hopefully have bigger things to worry about to spend time laughing at me.
put acid on your tongue, I'm sure that'l be much more of a fun experience I'm pretty sure you'l be able to see much more after that than if you put acid in your eyes!
Gotta say this video is really cool. I like the idea of an electric motorcycle. It has its place, just not on my mtb trails. we have a hard enough time sharing trails with hikers and horseback riders without these light motorcycles blasting through them.
I sincerely hope that this is the last ELECTRIC BIKE seen on PinkBike; though I know it won't be. This was a very entertaining advertisement. But apart from having a mountain biker riding the electric motorbike, it really doesn't have a place on a mountain bike website other than entertainment.
Whether it is electric assist or full electric, the use of a motor for propulsion makes it a motor bike. Motor bikes belong on motor bike trails or moto tracks, not on hiking/biking/horse (multi-use trails).
One thing that many people tend to forget is that these are expensive electric bikes. In most cases they are more expensive than mountain bikes. So we aren't going to see loads of them immediately on trails. And to pilot them, to need to have some decent bike/moto handling skills or the rider will be kissing the dirt; another reason these aren't likely to flood the trails.
They are coming / they live among us (electric bikes not Zombies) and we might need to learn to learn to live with them in the future, however finding where each user group fits is the hurdle we all need to get past.
You do know that these E-bike have speed limiters right? The pedal assist will only take you up to a certain speed depending on the federal laws in place, and than if you want to go faster, you have to put in all the extra effort yourself. Have you piloted one yourself? The acceleration is simply a multiple of the amount of power you put into the drivetrain. It does accelerate like a vehicle designed to go faster than 32km/h...
Perhaps if you gave one a try, you may understand why they are not actually that bad. Im not saying you have to like it, im just saying that maybe you will realize that some of your arguments are incorrect assumptions.
This was so bad, it was good. I sold a few E mountain bikes, and while I won't be getting one anytime soon, they definitely have their place are fun to play around on. I rode a Surly Moonlander and a Krampus with an add on kit, and a 160mm full-sus with the motor in the bottom bracket. Again, it's easy to hate, but usually the people who buy these things are plodding around pretty slow off road.
I just don't understand why people hate E-bikes so much. First off, great video, nice production value, a good showcase for the product. I ride Dirt Bikes almost as much as mountain bikes, they simply take you to places you really can't go on mountain bikes, without being a super iron man 5000 monster, 3000ft climbs in the rockies and then another 4hrs riding on top of that. I think its a cool product in that regard, would be brilliant in Off highway vehicle areas. So what if someone has an E-bike on normal bike trails? as long as they have trail courtesy (more then I can say for punk ass downhill kids) what does it matter? I'm getting fitter and on a lighter machine, so what? Just like ATV's, they're a lot easier then Dirt bikes which are easier then Mountain bikes, but they do different things for different experiences. Wait until someone actually shows up on a trail with a 6000$ E-mountain bike and goes crazy things before bringing a call to arms against them.
Also maybe someone gets injured and still wants to ride with their buddies on 1000m climb trail day, a little help isn't so bad is it?
Wow pinkbike! Just wow. And as for the obvious e-bike industry trolls, nice try. Your crap will fail, this industry prides itself on the fact that riding is earned by peddling.
The message is: Dirt bikes look cool but are loud! E bikes are quiet but ugly. Mountain bikes will Rule the zombie war. No empty tank no dead batteries. Human power will prevail.
Can Pink bike please cut the bullshit and stick to a real MTB great movies? This website in not about e-bike or MX, defenitly not about zombies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I liked this vid, it was a lot of fun! Don't know much about E-bike but this looked fun. Pedal is pedal and throttle well...it is just easier. I'm not going to give up my bike but I would mind playing on one of these. Two wheels are freaking fun, they all have their place and reverence is knowing where.
Those forks look pretty cool with the remote resevoirs. Not so keen on the electric motorbike part.
Really want to like it because of Caroline. .. But no
That's sweet, I don't see the problem about having these around. We should have more companies looking into these for city use as well. I'm a huge collector in bikes. I have made 10 beach cruisers with 66 cc engines for riding around the beaches for my home town York beach. Old people love along with the new generation of kids.
Somebody put a lot of money in this video, but e bikes... this thing just look horrible, if it looks better and is light, i would probably ride one to never pedal up a hill again.
for all the ebike haters, if you didn't try riding e-bike with downhill frame yet you don't know what u missing. i don't like the stealth, its way over price and super heavy. i ride on 6 different bikes from AM to downhill and dirtjump but i enjoy riding my electric santacruz bullet with 888 as well. it's my shuttle on my privet DH trail since there is now car or ATV access. it might make u happy that i turn off the motor on the Downhill any way.
I like mtbs, I like motorbikes. Why the hell would I not like e-bikes? Although yeah I do have some time for the "yes, but not on mtb trails" argument.
What I do NOT like is all that torque going through a half link chain. Whos stupid idea was that?
Funny side note, apparently the fastest bike up Pikes Peak is electric, not petrol. Couldn't believe it myself, but apparently its true...
That is a good point. Was sneakily watching vid at work so didnt really notice. Still tho, half-links stretch like elastic bands even under human power. They are just crap.
Closed minded is the wrong term, people just don't want to see these things ripping up/around our local trails. They need to stop marketing these things to mountain bikers and start posting this shit on motorcycle forms as yes these would be vary fun on moto trails and tracks.
Fair point. In my opinion I don't see it being as big an issue as most MTBers seem to think. Anyone can rip up a local trail on a normal mountain bike, ride like a dick, skid around, rut it up in the mud, blow past someone in very close proximity. The majority of ebikers right now, so far seem to come from a casual biking background, and don't have the skills to go fast or rip anything up... you need to have skill to handle a heavier and powerful machine like that, or you're going to eat shit very quick and not be doing that anymore.
Then an e-biker coming from a MTB background... such as myself should have more proper trail ettiquette regardless of what they ride on. It all comes down to personal responsibility.. even walkers can ruin trails (adding dangerous booby traps or whatever, it's happened). Change is scary...

This is good guys vs. the bad guys. Good vs. Evil. Blue vs. Red. Spaghetti vs. Lasagne.
If E-bikes win, we all lose! Dirtbikes are rad, E-bikes suck, etc..

secondly - please for the love of humanity, stop posting motorcycle content on a mountain biking site...
Have a little backbone when deciding whether or not to take ad money, and if it's good for our sport or not.
"Starting a conversation" is a cop out, not a legitimate reason for this garbage.
Also maybe someone gets injured and still wants to ride with their buddies on 1000m climb trail day, a little help isn't so bad is it?
Nobody ever had a moped in the 80s?
It's like having sex with a fat chick...
