Oct 8, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

bigquotesIs it Gravel? Is it Cyclocross, or Gravelcross? Who knows?! I've never been one for pigeon holes, all I know is that it has skinny wheels and curly bars and is super fun to ride. Meet me at the Crossroads...Chris Akrigg

 Greg Watts as well

 @SHEESHKAH: Greg What?
  • 17 1
@SHEESHKAH: don't know why you're gettin neg propped. Greg's a sick rider and awesome guy. I remember the NWD days.

Riding just looks like more fun when you're Chris Akrigg

Whatever mongoose is paying him, it isn't enough.
  • 19 0
How ever much it is; he's worth every penny.
  • 14 0
@jkwilliamz: Good because they pay him one penny
  • 2 1
I guess... but for all of Akrigg's great riding... is anyone here riding a Mongoose?
  • 1 0
@snideremarks: I've got one of their BMX bikes, the L100. It's been a lot of fun to mess around on.
  • 72 0
Why is he always in such a hurry? If I rode that hard everywhere, my rides would only last 3:21 too!
  • 32 0
I think that's what I like most about his edits. Always so intense. Gotta be exhausting doing multiple takes at that level.

Chris Akrigg is more exciting to watch going uphill than most people are going downhill. That section on the stairs was just insane, to ratchet pedal and bunny hop together, let alone at the speed at which he does it. Insane.
  • 7 0
It's so cool to watch that done well. Here's a CX kid making it look magical: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0oGMix5X44

and the wheelie for the last, just cause he can.
  • 1 0
Second nature for a trials rider.
  • 1 0
@pmhobson: Cody is hardly a kid but yeah he has serious skills. Fun to follow his lines or at least try.
  • 1 0
@pmhobson: Was just looking for that vid, thanks!!

Make me want a cross bike but if I tried any of that I would no longer have a cross bike

Ive got one theyre class, can take KOMS off road boys and mountain bike boys on the same bike on the same ride. I love mine.
  • 2 0
 2:27 I think I can manage that

@zer0c00l44: I've got one with road tyres on it and I've found it much harder to take road KOMs than off road ones. I've got eight off road KOMs and I've had about 20. On the road I have one and I almost puked getting it!
  • 2 0
@MaN-oF-STeEL: 2:27 that was so out of place. Can’t say that added much for me. The rest was incredible obv

@jaame: Ive got the new cannondale topstone carbon swapped out wheels, cranks and put a set of gravelking 37c's on it (super light weight tyres). It weighs around 19 lbs and is stiff AF its like a road bike you can take off road not a gravel bike. Ive run it with road tyres and the difference between road and the gravelkings is very slim so i run the kings all the time. Its superb for climbing. And super quick sprinting. Dont get me wrong I aint taking marathon road ride koms but shorter sprints and up to a mile or 2 speed runs. I sold my road bike to get a gravel bike they are so much more versatile. Ive almost been sick a few times.

@speed10: I think it was a piss take ala Whatshisface from 50:01. The dog one.

Gravel bike evolution: Disc brakes> Fatter tyres> Suspension forks> Dropper posts.
Whats next? Flat bars and 26" wheels?
  • 14 0
They are gradually morphing into late 80's MTB's. Next thing they will throw a flat bar and bar ends on.
  • 2 0
Then 1.9 tires and a 46mm travel fork.

 My arthritis hurts.
  • 3 0
Then check Mike Aitken “that’s it” on youtube
  • 1 0
My back got sore just watching this.
  • 18 0

It’s like every time I start to think I’m a pretty badass rider... one of these videos come out
  • 14 0
Wow, that was rad! Great drone usage, especially that shot at 0:45. Awesome!!!
  • 13 0
So... What's the difference between the DownGravel and Gravelty segments, anyway?
  • 10 0
 That was gravduro
  • 10 0
The French may be dominating the WC, but as far as i'm concerned - between him and Danny (and Ali C too), the brits f'ing rule. Endless talent.
  • 9 0
And Fabio Wibmer's mother is British too*

*I may have just made that up
  • 1 0
@jaame: It's definitely possibly correct, or at least potentially not completely false!

Great video. Akrigg is an absolute monster! Watching the combo of power and creativity is really inspiring. And I hope they pay the lad well because he does an incredible job showing off the capabilities of the components! Cool to see the wheels put up with his shenanigans, and the fork both taking its whacks but then locking out for those insane sprints. I suppose the vest kept him safe when he rolled over the pile of dirt... lol
  • 6 0
sorry danny still prefering chris videos more, straight beastmode
  • 2 0
That was inspirational. Currently working temporarily where there is very limited MTB options so cross/gravel bike is my only way to get out and ride. That has got me so stoked to challenge myself more in it. Cheers Chris. Awesome as ever.

Was he clipped in too?
  • 4 0
I don't understand how he manages to keep momentum through all of that, it's ridiculous.
  • 5 0
The answer is "take 21... ACTION!" Always like his outakes as well it's obvious how hard himself and the film crew must work to nail these edits.
  • 2 0
Him and Danny two of the best ,he must have just one word ,or the brand is paying him enough,or no other brand wants to (I cannot believe that),keep it on Chris akrigg, for as long as possible
  • 4 0
Darn it all, what happened to my deadlines?!
Chris Akrigg: Watch my new edit
Me: Yes master

Curly bars? Check. Epic ride with only one small water bottle? Check. Spandex clothing as close to underwear as possible? Check. Zero padding? Check. Absolutely minimalist helmet? Check. Doing a fancy dismount in order to pick the bike up over obstacles because you don’t know how to ride over them, and never will even try to learn??? Missed that one!!

Chris should race Cyclocross. He would kill it.
  • 5 2
The back roll was out of this world. A bit tongue in cheek, very funny to watch. Well done again, Christopher.
  • 2 0
That's a D-Mac move. Out of place in this vid.
  • 3 0
@rrolly: I know, but I took it to be a joke. Poking fun at himself because he can't do it as well as the Macster.
  • 3 0
Deep house and drop-bar bikes with suspension forks. Man this video really is making me feel all fuzzy.
  • 5 0
its all gone a bit john tomac again..
  • 2 0
i like the jams but wouldn't call that deep house Smile @MarcoSTEEZ
  • 1 0
First of all! “I’m out of breath watching that!
Followed by second point! was that a Lambretta or a NSU?
Lastly- id like to see the whole thing again, using mongoose flat pedals and crocs.

Brilliant jobtup

 Always a pleasure Chris.
  • 2 0
I love how small the production team is compared to other videos(see the credits). Crazy what product Chris comes up with!
  • 2 2
The carbon footprint of such an expense of energy by Akrigg must be responsible for more than an half of the global warming. Be cool, use a MTB and prefer the downhill side of the life!

Remember when Yoann Barelli sent A-line on a Giant TCX?
  • 2 0
I still liked godziak when he did a back flip over the peloton a few years ago on a road bike.....
  • 3 0
 Chris Akrigg IS THE BEST.
  • 1 0
I did that trick where he rolled on to his back then back onto his wheels......I just didn't land back on my wheels and just rolled in the dirt.
  • 1 0
Leave it to Chris to ride bikes Mongoose doesn't even have on their website. My guess it's some rebranded bike with way nicer components than mongoose would ever spec.
  • 2 0
Clipped in, Lycra, tight jersey, no dropper post. Looks better than 80% of Enduro Bros...
  • 2 0
Just hit purchase on new wheels for the gravel bike!!!
  • 2 0
Ah yeah! Just got mine dropped off today building tomorrow! NBD = best day.
  • 1 0
@Pfayze: Do not expect to be able to ride it like this?
  • 1 1
Don't buy these ones! You can hear the spoke go at :56 Smile
  • 2 0
 So awesome love my CheckPoint!!!

Never seen an eGravel bike before. Where do they hide the battery?
  • 1 0
 up his...nevermind
  • 1 0
I gotta think that “army roll” over the spine was a nod to Danny Macaskills bouncy ball rolls.
  • 2 0
Chris Akrigg showing that skills are more important than bike geometry!
  • 2 0
No idea why people use drop bars. To make a ride less fun?
  • 2 0
 He makes E-bikes look underpowered
  • 1 0
What blows my mind the most are still his brakeless trials edit from a while back

No Mongoose were hurt during the making of this video.
  • 4 0
Are you sure about that? Wink
  • 1 0
 Always a joy!
  • 2 1
 fuck
  • 1 3
we have seen this level of abuse on road bikes in the Road bike party videos, so if anything doing it to sell gravel bikes (gross) is kind of less impressive in a way.
  • 1 3
When you do gimmicky shit like rolls and trials to make your stupid xc bike with a road bike handlebar look cool you are trying way too hard.
  • 1 0
 Akrigg you beeest
  • 6 7
Geez, I can hardly one hand wheelie my road bike.
