Join Josh Carlson as he takes you onboard a VERY wet course preview of round two of the UCI Mountain Bike Enduro World Cup - Derby, Tasmania
Through the raindrops, Josh gives us insights into tackling the six physical stages that will test the skills and stamina of the world’s best enduro riders!
The sun is shining today and the tracks are drying out leading to ever-changing conditions.— UCI Mountain Bike World Series
Stoked to see this course. Proper/classic Enduro where it's not just a series of DH-lite races but one with elements of attrition/survival over a big old day.
The "standard" system is silly, as it makes otherwise simple calculations complex. So, the short answer is that we don't calculate incline, we just say "that sh*t steep!"
FYI that calculation isn't correct. Gradient is the same as slope, or rise over run (horizontal distance). For small slope angles, your calculation is a good approximation but it won't work as the slope angle increases.
We look at the terrain, squinting against a low sun, then nonchalantly remove a piece of straw from the corner of ones lips and say "I reckon it'll be an 8% slope".
So - Live timing. We kicking off yet where it is, how bad will be. The race kicks off at 9am Local EST in Tasmania. The link in Insta by UCI_WorldMTBSeries says use this link in Bio
Last race here was a red banner after progressing through this page to the link to the event, but even that is not there his time. WTAF is going on with just watching and participating with this series?
As I slog away at my computer, it was gratifying to see that even Josh Carlson can have a bad day at the office. Hope it dries up for the actual racing, though!
So a while back Pinkbike sold itself to a big company called Outside Interactive Inc, which had recently raised a bunch of VC funding to buy up a bunch of outdoor focused media. Pinkbike did this because Outside mostly promised them all of the good things the extra funding could bring, like having their own world cup DH team. But then the economy started looking less rosy, and Outside started doing things that all companies that have to report to investors did, they started making cost cutting measures in order show that they're managing the big company really well. This resulted in the complete shutdown of multiple media outlets they had just purchased, as well as firebombing cyclingtips (Pinkbike's sister site that was sold to outside with the Pinkbike purchase) so bad that every editor quit to start their own cycling media website.
Anyways, that all leads up to pinkbike having less nice things.
2017 called, they want their enduro back.
It's pretty easy with a metric system (i.e. stage 2 188m/2420m = ~8%). How would you do that with 617ft / 1.51miles?
