My ears really appreciate the way she is doing the preview but it was way more entertaining to see a former wc rider and fast guy struggling to stay on the bike and yelling like me when I followed him (Claudio) once on my Hometrail... I wish they keep up with the racer follows racer format. And Tahnee should be awarded for the nicest commentary in dh racing.
Yes, but Claudio also sings songs when riding these tracks. Not sure whether he really needed to, but I can imagine it could throw you off the rhythm. He was definitely making it harder for himself.
That track will be lethal if it gets wet. I really enjoyed Tahnee's commentary, unbelievable to be casually talking as she drops a course 99% of mountain bikers couldn't even ride. I think she's working on adding a team mate. I like the way she interviews for the position!
Sick! It’s weird the camera makes the riding look so... casual? But when they hit a jump you see how much distance they clear then it’s like damn, they’re going fast.
The level that all women's sports are at nowadays is under real!! Now that women have better financial and team backing in most sports...It should have happened a long time ago...But I'm glad that it is happening now .. Professional women's Surfing made the decision to pay women equal prize money as men this year. I hope other sports follow suit as the commitment and risk are the same....
Better financial backing? If you’re talking women’s elite downhill, you are very incorrect, in the 90s peak of MTB DH, nearly every team had a woman or 2-3 on the program, the autograph lines for the female team riders were as long or longer than the men, and of the top 10 world ranked women, 5 of them were making over a quarter million a year and even a top 15 female was making a decent salary. The highest paid female today doesn’t make nearly what the highest paid female in the 90s made.....what is my source? I managed teams and athletes back in that era then, and now.
And the ‘level’ you speak of, go ride some of those bikes the chicks rode in the 90s on some of the tracks they raced on (Nevegal, cap dail, etc) and I think you’d be blown away how fast they went back then.
That being said, as a MTB historian, Vali is the most talented DH racer I’ve seen since ACC, phenomenal talent and a pleasure to work with.
@jaydawg69: I hope YT steps up and gives her a full Elite team ride (if that's what she wants - she can write her own ticket), not enough teams are supporting women at the highest level.
@sharpGT: Crankworks has been giving equal price money for some years now, and yes it is great to see. As far as the World Surf League goes, the reason they had to do it is because they got sued by a bunch of pro surfer women, that the WSL is based in California and that the California law requires company to be equal payers. Surfing remains an extremely macho sport as a whole, unfortunately... There are still many pro-women that struggle to get sponsorship contracts because they don't do enough bikini photoshoots or are not deemed good-looking enough for the brand. But hopefully, the equal prize money will help narrow that gap.
Back than: "I stop racing if a girl rides faster than I do!" now: "I'll become pro if I can ride as fast as the junior girls." time has changed the perspective... And they even did gave it 100%
@x-rider Another one not understanding how fast the women 'have' been, not sure what the latest best womans time if placed in the mens, but when Leigh Donovan won Mont St Anne in 1996, her time would have been 24th in the Mens Elite. Seems people don't know much about MTB history.
@stikmanglaspel: You and your wife sir were part of that history. There’s no question about the level of talent that brought this sport into the limelight. Talent is not limited to gender. My question is what’s happened since the glory days of Giove, Donovan, and ACC that’s caused the women’s field to shrink and sponsors to treat them differently. Your thoughts and perspective from both you and Leigh would be interesting.
@stikmanglaspell: Think it's just a modern misconception in general that women somehow weren't doing well/supressed etc and it's only now changing... But really women can and have always done great things and performed well... You'd think no one reading this had seen the "Missile" or ACC....
@supermike306: you're right, they have! Only the perspective is changing, which I think is long overdue and it's thanks to the rad women who have always been crushing it.
Great course preview!! Tahnee is really good at commentary, their riding skill are insane. Can t wait to see Vali battling with the big Girls. The track is awesome, proper dh gnarliness.
@ptrcarson: The website is good too, just sling or HDMI it from your laptop to the big screen if your broadband provider doesn't have RedbullTV native (mine does).
Well done ladies! WAAAYYYY better than Claudio’s goofy ass. Plus Tahnee is fast enough to stay with the rider she’s following. Maybe this is the new format.....2 current racers...not 1 elite and 1 washed up loser with bad teeth and shitty commentary like with Claudio.
I don’t see why people dislike Claudio, I think he’s hilarious, and get a kick out of his previews every time. I will admit it does seem like he’s not very fast and tends to get behind, and he comments on how scary stuff is, whereas Tahnee here she just plowed down the track like it was nothing.
It's probably just because she rides with her brother a lot
