Video: Danny MacAskill Rides e-MTB Trials on a Deserted Scottish Island

bigquotesI just got my hands on the new @Santa Cruz Bicycles Heckler e-mtb and took it for a wee adventure at home in Scotland.Danny MacAskill

Oh no! Pinkbike users will be so torn between their love of Danny MacAskill and their hatred of eBikes! This should be fun.
  • 67 6
This is a bit like the new star wars trilogy, just try to imagine it never happened... but deep down you know it did
  • 51 7
To be honest I never had anything against bikes with pedal assist but the early part of the video got me wondering what the point was for him riding one of these. Of course it is impressive to see how he's able to still control the heavy bike, but in the category of "impressed by using unsuitable gear" I much prefer to see Akrigg ride his fixie (or some would even say riding a Mongoose but I won't jump on that train). I did absolutely love to see him clear that rock slab climb on Skye though so yeah that put things straight again. I can definitely see him do more cool stuff on that bike once he has had more time on it. Next video will probably just be some jibbing on the V10 though, considering he needs to prepare for Rampage 2020.

So no hate on the bike per se but the name is a bummer. If they release a bike called Heckler, it should be an affordable durable aluminum single pivot workhorse of a bike.
  • 65 7
@seraph Danny's fine... I think the ultimate blow will be Sam Hill entering E-bike racing. That would be the final blow.
  • 11 7
@vinay: you say that but affordable santa cruz bikes dont sell, ever seen a ccx01 build go on offer at end of year? npoe but the aluminuim r builds,,, yup people who want value dont buy a 4k bike with an alumium frame and parts that belong on 3k bikes, they buy canyons and yt's why make another bike that your customers don't want?.. know your market and to be fair to sc they do, even if it is out of reach of many!!
  • 8 1
I enjoyed it but I feel like it may have been rushed out to quell some of the backlash on the e-heckler. It doesn't have the same level of story that all his other vids have. Insane skills as always, plus cute seals.
  • 19 18
You know it’s the last bike in the shop he would pick to go riding abandoned buildings with........but I guess he’s gotta keep the Promo bosses happy $$$$$$$ $$$$$$ Beer
  • 5 0
@vinay: Interesting I thought the first part of the video was very Akrigg like
  • 3 2
@Dallasdownunder: Yeah, just meant to say that he's proven to be able to do that so much better on the unassisted bikes. The motor and the battery aren't the same kind of "cool handicap" that the lack of freewheel Akrigg managed deal with. It is like someone riding skate park on a full-on DH bike. It sure must be hard too but because it such a more complex and expensive tool than the more suitable BMX it just isn't as cool as if someone managed to do it the other way around (ride the DH track on a BMX).

@netracer-enduro: Yeah, I just associated the Heckler (just like their other single pivot bikes) with a no nonsense simple and durable bike. I don't have personal experience with bikes with pedal assist but from what I understand from the PB articles (expecially during that e-bike week they did) is that you should be prepared for more wear and maintenance. Pretty much the polar opposite from what (in my mind) the Heckler stood for.

@chriskneeland: being Danny’s flat mate I can confirm he is in fact loving the e-bike! I’ve not seen him this genuinely stoked to be riding in a while and it’s been the bike of choice since he got it. Danny’s all about having fun on a bike and he’s getting the most fun from riding the Heckler

  • 20 12
 @chriskneeland: send hard dick picks
  • 49 5
@chriskneeland: what makes you think this makes him soft? Danny’s all about having fun on a bike, this bike let’s him get 2-3x more riding done than a normal bike... it’s hardly soft to be doing 5 descents instead of a couple, you are putting the same effort in as with a normal bike but you get to do more runs. If you don’t like them then that’s fine but to call someone out for having a fun time riding them is a shame

  • 1 1
@netracer-enduro: Interesting. I would think you don't see them for sale right away because CCX01 builds are almost 10k U.S. and are going to ride great!

Industry has left people like me and my friends no choice but to do full custom builds only. Buy an aluminum frame and ditch the rubbish rear shock they spec.

The Cool part is you end up with a full custom ride with custom tuned suspension for about the price of a entry level carbon complete.

Demo bikes are usually close to top tier; someone who is new to bikes doesn't usually realize the low end alloy R spec is a gonna ride completely different. They see it's 3,000 dollars cheaper, they buy it, only to realize it rides like crap in stock form, they sell it and buy a nicer build. I've seen this happen a number of times- Santa Cruz, Ibis and Pivot have amazing demo fleets.

@aliclarkson: Thanks for your comment. In the video, you can clearly tell Danny loves the ebike and is enjoying it immensely. Having fun on a bike is what it's all about, and as Danny and some of us now know, an EMTB will put a smile on your face when you ride one.Yes, non-sayers, don't knock somethjing until you have tried it. I like riding both my regular pedal bikes and my EMTB, and enjoy what each brings to the table. When you have some very long steep mountain climbs, you cannot beat a EMTB. Despite some people's thoughts, an ebike offers a great workout, and let's you choose how much power assist you want at any given time, plus you ride further, faster and longer. I cannot remember many times having a big smile on my face barely being able to pedal (which seemed like forever), up some of those extremely long steep climbs. An EMTB will put a smile on your face, yes..even going uphill, and that my friends, is why we are all here...

Since everybody here hates ebikes its time to get one. After getting into mtbs from a lifetime of bmx Ive gotten nothing but stupid advice from mtbers on the know. At this point doing the opposite of what the PB consensus thinks is clearly the right thing to do most of the time. To bmxers Suspension is cheating. To mtbers e assist is cheating. Well - F everybody. Suspension allows me to ride way over my head and survive. I think e assist will let me ride the fun stuff 5x more in a ride. At the end of this life take your pride and stupid opinions to try and be superior or just fit in and tell me how much better your life was because of it.

Carbon bikes, batteries..... the world is pushing for climate change and the MTB industry is building bikes that cant be recycled with batteries that will eventually pollute the planet for our next generations. All for what? So lazy privileged people (who can afford 12k bikes) can get an assisted pedal up hill. (Excluding people who use e-bikes for accessibility reasons). Change my mind!
  • 37 7
Downhill / park folk catching shuttles in diesel polluting vans / trucks and lifts / heli drops also producing environmental issues not to mention the use of carbon, rubber and friction materials we use paired with degradation of wildlife from even normal MTB'ers - kinda makes ebikes not that bad IMO

@Imabigboy, Couldn't agree more. One of cycling's best attributes has always been that it is one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport. This is now being degraded at a time where we should be doing everything possible to minimise pollution. And yes, we all know the 'uplift substitute' argument, or using an e-bike instead of a car etc but let's be honest, in the real world the overall impact of e-mtb's is still greater pollution.
  • 8 1
By the time all car manufactures are only producing electric cars the percentage of waste ebike batteries is going to be the tiniest blip in comparison (still not an excuse for making them i know). If the world was pushing for climate change we'd all be pushed into using what we've already got till i dies. Not a good business module that tho...
  • 19 6
a) The relative environmental damage caused by any sort of bike is insignificant. Come back with your enviro-bike-hate when every other form of transport has been outlawed.
b) I ending up scouting with a random guy on an e-bike in a wood neither of us had ridden before. He didn't seem lazy or privileged, just your typical mtb bum.
c) Literally everybody uses e-bikes for accessibility reasons: to access the top of the hill more easily and frequently.

It might be true you can't recycle carbon bikes for now, but let's get real -- how many people were recycling their aluminum bikes? Be honest. Raise your hands. Put 'em down, liars.

What about open-pit strip mines to get the aluminum in the first place?

I grew up in the largest steel-producing region in the U.S. Do you all have any idea how much those mills pollute?

In terms of the environmentally friendly means of transportation, I think this website is the only place I've ever seen where people would make the argument that an ebike is worse than an automobile. Everywhere else would be like, "Ditch the car!" Ride these bikes." Not here in crazy town.

E-bikes and carbon bikes are not the scourge of the environment. Get outta here with that nonsense. There are no means of clean manufacturing. It all pollutes. It all takes its toll. We can mitigate it as much as possible and try to improve the process, but unless you all want to go back to living in caves and grass huts, it's a necessary evil. Someone mentioned above -- the best thing for the environment is not to consume anything. Given that's not reality, go ahead and consume less, waste less. Or just carry on. Whatever. But please dump this weak-ass argument.
  • 4 0
I think e-bikes are a great solution for commuting. If they are replacing cars on the road, then it's still a net benefit for the environment. But that's it.
  • 2 0
@HPdeskjet3630: The term "accessibility" means something different in this context. It's specifically talking about disability. To conflate the two is the logical fallacy of False Equivocation
  • 2 0
Well actually carbon composites can be recycled, or more appropriately "down-cycled." Battery technology is, granted, not where it needs to be but it will get (and actually already is getting) better.

I'm for eebs in certain situations (personally don't own one) but as a wise man once said: "everything is relative." For me, an E-bike makes sense to get to those trails that I would maybe, just maybe take a shuttle to if I was on vacation (800+ meters). If I'm at a trail center or somewhere where the elevation change is barely worth mentioning, then I think that would be me just being lazy. On the other hand if the days are short or I had little time it would be nice to bang out double the amount of laps that I could on my non-eeb.

Back to your first point though... yeah carbon composites aren't easy to "down-cycle." Typical LI batteries are also difficult, but not impossible to recycle/reuse (I'm not a scientist but I can summarize what I've read). That doesn't mean, in the context of every day use that we should stop using these things. Did you write this on a laptop? What are you going to do with that at the end of it's life cycle? Where does it go? How much of it gets thrown in a furnace? Maybe your cell phone? Where does that go after you drop it off at the mobile shop?
I'm not trying to use the tried and true hypocrisy argument - just trying to put things in perspective a bit.

Forgetting about all that nonsense this video made me miss what it's like to go in to the mountains and not see another soul.

The geometry game is coming to an end as are frame material options... Gotta sale bikes and Ebikes are the epitome of "your bikes obsolete".. I cant blame the industry for pushing it. I will say after riding one, if you've been going out and riding 10 to 20 miles a ride on a regular bike for sometime, you literally have to ride 40 to 60 miles on an ebike to obtain a decent work out. I don't have the time for ebikes. I'll take my 15 mile work out and call it good.

@TheR: I agree that e-bikes are not the scourge of the environment -of course there are many bigger polluters.

The issue I have is that they are being justified as offsetting the pollution created by cars/uplifts and therefore eco-friendly but the truth is that humans are inherently lazy, and e-bikes help facilitate this.
Sure, there are people who will substitute an electric bike for a car/uplift but i bet they are in the minority. Therefore the overall impact of electric MTB'S (in particular) is of greater pollution imo. I would like to be proved wrong though.

@Rageingdh: I know right? Don't get me wrong I could care less if you ride an ebike, but don't act like you're saving the planet or better then people who shuttle etc.

Nice looking Island...Made me remember that my tetanus shot is well over due.
  • 2 0
Every other move had me thinking "that's got tetanus written all over it".
That one down the rusty stair frame had me puckering too.

Damn Danny is freaking good. Those landings have to be so hard on that bike. It’s cool to see people that have so much fun on two wheels. Danny could ride beach cruiser and I would still watch.
  • 8 1
Whoa, so much hate for a choice of someone. Gentleman, shove it in your bottom bracket and go for a ride. Geez.

When Sam Pilgrim signed his new contract, starting with the promotion of e-bikes, pinkbike commenters got so offended and bitched so much about it that Sam posted a comment in order to "defend" him self. It will be interesting to see the reactions now. Although, so far, it seems that this will be more gentle this time. Just to say that what we see is real and it is really happening. Industry-Commenters: 2-0. If someone wants to get an e-bike (for any reason) he/she should go and buy it. The only real concern is in relation to recycling and the environment. Ah, and the price - they are ridiculously expensive.

 Killing ebike hate with love.

Thanks Danny!!! Couldn’t believe you would yet surprise me once more.

Gets to uninhabited island, sees dangerous looking rusty box, conquers rusty box. Danny you're my hero.

@5afety3rd: I still feel bad for Alice getting knocked out. All she wanted was a piece of Danny before he went to war.
And for everyone down voting that comment. Whooooosh!

It would be sweet to see Danny at rampage, totally different approach. Rampaging goats.

This eBike gives him the kind of dynamic similar to Chris Akkrig

Chris has got an e-bike from GT, so we'll see what he can come back with!

This edit will rip a hole in the universe but if he took a helo, truck, or lift to the top it would be totally rad for some reason.

Killer riding, mad skills and such a Nice bike... saw the bike in person this past weekend and it is Awesome..I feel the price is a bit of a reach by SC, But I would love to own one...

Proof I am losing my mind: My first thought was, "If and ebike is good enough for Danny..." I suppose that was the point of the video so I guess Santa Cruz wins. (Who's kidding who? I can't even afford to replace my regular bike with another regular bike, let alone ANYTHING from SC.)
  • 1 0
It's a nice video if we take it in context that he is riding a bike designed for people who cant ride normally any more.
He is riding an ebike and it does look heavy, clunky, cumbersome and uncomfortable, uninspiring, difficult and laboured.

Remember, a normal day on that island is called a storm in America. It will often be blowing 40 to 60mph winds and the rocks will be slick, really slick and it will feel like its -10 so no wonder he doesn't look super stoked. Only contis can grip on the slick rocks in Scotland.

Danny has been riding a fair bit with Nash on the hecklers and it looks like they have been having an absolute blast high up in the cairngorms, more where the bike belongs and certainly has its place as a normal bike just doesn't work for 99.9% on those climbs. Now an e bike is good for anyone on the climb up to the top of Cairngorm as its brutal and not many can actually ride it (too physical for me to clean in 1 go for sure, Nash can do it in one as he is a climbing machine).

We just entered on the tipping point of losing this battle against e-devil.... Take my money.

Drive backwards for battery recharge ... ?

I am pretty sure that Danny on Rampage would make amazing lines, probably a line without huge jumps, but surely the most creative one!
  • 4 1
This has to be the most tame video I’ve ever seen with Danny. He shredded harder on a road bike
  • 6 2
I'm coming out as an eBike hater.

So, the new Santa Cruz E-bike has the Danny MacAskill SEAL of approval? Smile

Do you want tetanus? because that's how you get tetanus.
  • 2 0
An amazing athlete to be sure but he must have been sore after that one. Compared to his other vids its easy to see how he is struggling with the fatness of that bike.
  • 1 0
It’s like watching Guy Martin rip around Isle of Man on a goldwing.
  • 4 0
I hope e-bikes haters loved it.
  • 1 1
they rent e-bikes in my local trails , and well not sure how long we'll be able to call'em trails these bikes dig into the trail faster tha an excavator also it's great to get be asked by a guy wearing a hockey helmet on e-bike to get out the way during your climb
  • 4 2
You can see the extra effort that he's having to put in. The heckler looks like one of the baby seals parents.
  • 1 1
haha I was gonna say that they put the porky seal with the porky bike.

Yet people whinge that eMTB's are for lazy slobs and the death of the environment and world peace. Go figure.
  • 1 0
 point of clarrification:

For the pedal hops, and jumping up onto the box, was the bike on, or off?
surely the motor interfering with the drive would make it impossible?

 I love you Danny!

I agree with the seal in the last shot.

 True. It seals the deal.

Shouldn't be long now til we see the first $20,000 e-bike. I think I'll spend my money with KTM and shred the XC trails for only $13,599!!
  • 3 2
So just what I thought ... more a sales pitch for the Heckler than a Danny video. No surprise.
  • 4 3
Damn Danny, you just made history today by making E-Biking cool! And I'm sold!
  • 2 0

 Haha! That OTB. Brilliant.
  • 5 8
ok, its his job to do that and may be his promotion jobs became a bit dominant. However, compared to his other vids this all looks a bit inelegant bumpy and not very smooth. So may be it is a bit too obvious he only does it for cash.So may be SC should have hired one of the usual shredders to do the Job. may be....
