Video: DMR Announces AXE Crank with Sideways Action from Brendan Fairclough & Olly Wilkins

PRESS RELEASE: DMR

There’s a vital component fitted to every bike which often goes unnoticed, is always abused and is rarely celebrated. It’s at the very core of your pedalling. It has to deal with absolutely everything you throw at it. Pumping forces, pedalling forces…even smashing rocks and casing jumps. It’s a part which you fit and should be able to forget. Choose wisely and it truly is the unsung hero of your bike.

For this reason we took Brendan Fairclough and Olly Wilkins out to Cape Town. An opportunity to give back to the product which provides them (and us) with so much joy, without any of the glory. Finally the unsung heroes get their 5 minutes in the sun… The cranks that is! The DMR AXE cranks.

You'd be right if you thought the sight of Brendan in this thick dust was familiar. He filmed his segment with Andrew Neethling in these exact hills in Andrews bike park: Helderberg trails. Same guy, same roost clouds, different bike!

photo
Any opportunity to put their bikes sideways and present the Axe crank was taken by Olly and Bren. True professionals.

photo
Brendan uses 165mm Axe cranks across all his bikes. This is so that the pedal clearance on his race bike is the similar to when he's riding his trail bike.

South African dust gets everywhere.

The dog going warp speed during shooting. Brendan is well amidst his pre-season training for the World Cup DH season ahead. Shooting in South Africa was the perfect time to put out lap after lap at pace. He certainly looks up to speed!

It's so rad to ride these turns. I've watched this section countless times on Deathgrip and it was awesome to see it in person!' Olly Wilkins

Odub also runs 165mm cranks on his bike as well as Brendan's own signature pedals.

With DarkFest just around the corner from the bike park it seemed rude NOT to join the fun!

Scott Athletes bike build: 1. put the bike on a stand 2. strip down the fork, shock and the bloody twin lock and trash the shit 3. put on something what actually works

Ha! you forgot "get rid of 3 meters, 1kg of extra cables, and 2 thumb switches in the process"
  • 12 0
Mostly they just remove the front cable as it's not that useful on the front, the rear however is super useful to have a remote, i realise it's not really twinloc then but more bikes should have a rear shock remote, once you have it you realise just how much more you use it when you no longer have to take a hand off.

@odub23 Really well done product video. Just the right mix of product, riding, humor, humanity, humility, and irreverent fun. Well done.

I never got this -dub and -dog or -dawg stuff, whats wrong with peoples' names?

Oliver Michael Wilkins is my full name. Quite a mouthful. Odub has become a nickname subsequently. If you would like more information on nicknames and their purpose then here's a useful link. Hope this helps my man.

it's an english language thing that comes from the US&A and black hip hop culture. people you like and respect become dogs n stuff. somehow it's made it's way into freestyle sports of all kinds. this much i know, beyond that i don't get it either.

@jamesbrant: Thanks. Nicknames seems like a fun thing. We have no fun in Germany. I got to back to work now.
  • 21 0
@jamesbrant: "Mad Dog" is a nickname with a recorded use spanning over 100 years. Nothing to do with "black hip hop culture."

 @MrJimLahey: Frig off Lahey

@jamesbrant: It’s “USA”. or “US of A” even just a simple “US”. I have never once heard it referred to US&A

@Krzymndyd: ask Borat, he knows best. Or Trumpistan as we like to call it.

Jamesbrant has no relation to the rest of us, we often wonder how he ties his shoes.

“They blow them up to whatever size you want” hmmmm

Yeah, glad they discussed the tech bit. Curious how they keep it sealed with all that sideways action. If you're getting a bit too excited, would all the sealant squirt out? Or are they using rubber for additional protection? They look cool though. I may get them, but I'm going to stick a pool noodle in there, just to be sure.

@vinay: Only if it’s really wet and they hit some big wood would it start squirting like a fountain. They do look awesome though

That was awesome! One of the best ads I've ever seen too.

These still seem have the same downsides as the original Axe cranks released in 2016: no steel pedal inserts (even though they are supposed to have 'the strength needed for the biggest DH hits'), proprietary 28mm/30mm BB.

 Love it. When's episode 2?
  • 1 1
 165mm cranks? Imagine that Wink

I’ve been running short cranks for a while, sadly the only company who makes em in direct mount is SRAM, and only in aluminum (GX).

I’d take some in 160mm carbon ....

I remember the early 2000s when DMR chieftains were one of the few cranksets that could withstand mountain bike abuse. All the other cranksets were running square axle BBs.
