First Impressions: Whistler Bike Park
Words & Video: Jason Lucas // Photography: Chris Pilling

Presented by Tourism Whistler.

The snow line is receding, the lifts are turning, and mountain bikers are swarming the village - Whistler Mountain Bike Park is officially open for business. Pinkbike's Jason Lucas was on site to ride the goods and share his first impressions of the trails with special guest Pete Matthews, the man in charge of getting the trails primed for thousands of riders.

It's that time of year again.

More than ready for the first laps down the mountain.

Upper B-Line is a great place to start whether it's your first lap of the season, or it's your first lap ever.

Ho Chi Min hits.

There's no place like A-Line.

Synchronized biking for Tokyo 2020?

If you see this man, give him a high-five and buy him a beer.

Always a good time in the Whistler Bike Park.

Pete has always been so smooth stylie and understated in his riding. Such a down to earth awesome guy who just oozes steeze. I mean if you can rock a moustache like that you know you have steeze.

I was thinking about him looking like a flying walrus with that stache but BBQ trucker would suffice too.

Just got back from 4 days of riding today...Thursday was great weather...little rain Friday and Saturday...Sunday (yesterday) was the official opening day...packed like I've never seen it. Dirt Merchant was closed...getting upgraded...Lower Whistler DH rollers everything else RIPPED like usual...Sending it in the Whistlet bike park.
  • 2 0
Man it was nuts on Sunday. Kept hoping it would clear out a little but I think it was still 5 lines deep going into 7:00. Saturday and Friday were great though. Don't think I've ever had such cherry runs down A-line. Gonna have to plan an early season trip every year.

 Pete is actually sick af
  • 19 0
I dunno man he looks pretty healthy to me
  • 6 0
Looks a lot less muddy than opening day!
  • 3 0
Looks fun! So what’s the minimum requirement for Whistler? A Santa Cruz Nomad? Or is a downhill bike with a dual-crown fork a must?
  • 2 0
Plenty of folks riding long travel enduro bikes in the park these days. You just can't smash stuff quite as hard as riding a full DH/park sled.
  • 1 0
Ride what you like! Depends on how fast you want to hit stuff. Also if you can handle repeated days of abuse. A nomad would be good. You can go ride the other trails out the park too.
  • 1 0
I take my DH rig because I'm kind of a hack and it seems like the extra cushion can keep me going a couple days longer.
  • 1 1
Leave your own rig at home. Plenty of rental options in the village.
  • 1 0
Thanks for your replies. I have a Santa Cruz Tallboy LT. Took it to Mammoth. It was not enough bike, so I rented a downhill rig. But I did see a few Nomads (circa 2015-17) and Specialized Enduros out there.
