Video: French Mountain Biker Goes Viral After Almost Crashing into A Group of Students

May 10, 2019
by Pinkbike Staff

A mountain biker in France has earned over 1 million views and coverage in newspapers such as the Daily Mail for nearly crashing into a group of students on an urban downhill run.

The mountain biker who goes by FroFox on YouTube, was riding down a stair set in Bloise, France, and didn't see the group of students sitting on the stairs. Unable to stop, he shouts at them to move and is able to narrowly avoid hitting them, riding over a handbag instead. Surprisingly nobody was hurt and the group of students don't even seem that annoyed, laughing it off after they realize nobody is hurt. Skip to about the 1-minute mark to see the incident in question.

The rider in question definitely got lucky here and if there's a lesson to be learned it's that if you're going to ride in public places, make sure that it's safe to do so before you drop in.

The rider got lucky ?! thats like saying " a drunk driver definitely got lucky here because he/she narrowly missed a car and almost hurt someone !

Title should say " Stupid person does stupid shit and almost hurt someone because of his stupidity"

@mkotowski1: two wrongs dont make a right. maybe its fake or real. point is you just dont do it.

so what if he cleared it, and instead of students, those were kids hmm??

@SirWonky: Exactly. f*ck this trend of everyone making Youtube videos with titles in all caps, riding rider-direct bikes (we know you aren't sponsored), wearing Fox Head gear doing stupid shit? We know these people are kooks and somehow they're still "idolized" and out of touch with reality enough to think this type of shit is okay? Take the GoPro off your head, don't be a douchebag and piss off everyone in your small little town. The hysterical laughing seemed to be a symptom of their near-death realization. When someone sits on some stairs they're not expecting a wheeled vehicle traveling at speeds too quickly to stop barreling down on them. Same thing for when people are walking. Hit stair runs when you've sighted the whole line, or it's a closed race course. Otherwise, catching this type of stupidity on GoPro is reflects poorly on the sport.

Don't think he was being stupid, if people where using the stairs accordingly and standing up walking, they would have been visible from the tpp of the stairs, they were completely out of sight until he had committed, bit of crap luck and students shouldn't have been blocking the whole staircase more than anything

My reply to their YouTube video, and I encourage anyone else who thinks promoting such riding is not what should be happening to do the same.

"You Sir, and all your phoney staff and friends should be ashamed of yourselves; bunch of f*ckwits. I'll be reporting this piece of shit to Youtube for one. Have you any sense of social responsibility? None apparently, neither you nor the production crew who thought this was a good idea.

  • 25 10
@orientdave: my biggest problem with this is that people have problem with stuff like that only when sht goes down. A thin red line between “Sick riding!” and “rabble irresponsible, ahole, rabble!”

As Oscar Wilde wrote: “Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people whom we personally dislike.”

I do agree with you but you are flowing with the mob that I fear. For instance whenever I take my kid and film him jumping I post only pics of him succeeding. Thousands of views, tons of likes. I have some slams recorded that would put me into irresponsible parent category...
  • 1 1
@freestyIAM: you are so right. Instead of taking the opportunity to fire a good debate, the website with the biggest traffic chunk on the internet chooses to jump on the viral hype bandwagon. A sign of the times I guess.
  • 1 2
 @ajayflex: Quality comment

 MORE RANT WARNINGS

@WAKIdesigns: You are right to an extent in that my voice may well be one of 'the mob' however in cases such as this, I am happy with that; the mob is sometimes necessary IMHO; thanks for pointing it out nevertheless.

In this case, I feel very, very strongly about the irresponsible attitude taken by individuals who wilfully disregard personal responsibility towards those in their community, it makes me livid (really, really angry). Mainly because I am tired of seeing the effects of that attitude on news stories about people having family members taken away from them or having them put into wheelchairs.

Whether it be some git who believes that their god-given right to generate calls of 'sick dude' as they 'shred the gnar' when, wherever and however they choose trumps the rights of someone to walk home from the shops without getting taken out......

...... through drunk drivers who deprive children of their father as they smash though him on a crosswalk at 50mph......

.... to people playing Pokemon-go whilst they drive head first into a line of elementary school kids on their way home from school depriving a loving parent from seeing their child grow up.

All are expressions of individuals who fail woefully at being members of a community, including the linked video here. And yes, those last two are real examples of news stories I have had to sit through here in Japan recently. An inalienable right to shred urban DH gnar does not exist save for in your head; it makes me livid.

Those video makers? Idiots to me big time. And that word 'idiots' is not how I truly feel, it is not a strong enough word.

And I am willing to say that goes to anyone here who thinks that video is 'sick' or in any way cool.

Some will read this and say "This dude needs to chill out" I am sure. Sorry, no I will not chill and besides, have you any idea how difficult it is to climb down from a moral high horse once you are up there? Anyways, I like the view. And no, I am not fun at any of your parties.

On a weekly basis Waki, I confront people to their faces here on the street in Japan about such issues. My wife told me just last week she expects me to get taken out when someone I do confront gets violent. Well, that day will come maybe, but it's a risk I am willing to take at least a couple of times a week in the hope that some people may think about what they are doing.

So, yes@ajayflex to me, it is an issue I feel strongly about having seen too many people suffer at the hands of such an attitude, so I will speak up about it and try and get a video taken down on YouTube. Will it work? Probably not, but hey, I'll try.

I'm not expecting anywhere near the majority of the cohort here at PB to understand. You might after you have watched a week's worth of news here in Japan though. It brings me to tears.

Enjoy your Sundays, don't be a dick on your bike and think for a moment about what would happen to someone if maybe, just maybe, you took out their son / daughter / mother or father from that one lapse moment.

I don't want to live having been that dick. Night all.

@orientdave: I could not have said this better. For all you TLDRs, there is wisdom in there worth going reading
  • 1 2
Can you believe they wear helmets?
  • 4 0
@orientdave: I'm with you, Mr.PartyPooper. Had they sat 5 stairs above it could've ended in a serious injury. That guy is obviously a world class douche for riding like this (not to mention the video itself is pretty boring headcam rubbish anyway). Anyone saying differently should think how they would react if their kid (or some other squishy helpless loved one) was to get hit by such a rider.

On another note- i think the scenario of you getting yourself into a Japanese street fight, let alone getting your ass kicked, is more far fetched than you described. But hey, if you ever find yourself in need of some muscle ("some", i didn't say "much") to back you up, just holler, homes Smile

@orientdave: beautiful rant. I am simply fascinated about the mechanics of public perception and how polarized emotions certain pictures/stories can wake up depending on a tiny detail of the content. If this video didn’t have these students in it, if the guy on the bike that was almost run over, was edited out, would it be famous? No. Would you react so vividly? Maybe. Exactly maybe. Yes if a tree fell down in the woods and nobody has seen it falling... but you did see it and you reacted, so speculation is over right away Smile in a way the fact that they included the scenes of dickery proves the fact that they are dicks
  • 2 3
@WAKIdesigns: The devil is always in the detail right. You are right on the nail there. The mechanics of reactions are indeed fascinating.

@foxinsocks: You and I both know I would be USELESS in a streetfight; you'd be better off with an irritated toy poodle than me if things went south (which is why my wife is worried!). You'd be surprised at how often things do go south here...it's not all temples, rock gardens and tofu ice-cream. Mind you, I'm not under any illusions there are tougher places to live.. as we've talked about over a beer before.

The mechanics of this story below happened to me and my family too (having to stop on the fast lane of the highway because some guy forced you to stop) after I'd personally re-delivered an ashtray worth of cigarette butts to him some ten minutes before that he'd thrown out of his car window at a set of traffic lights... www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/nhknewsline/backstories/roadragedriver ...only we were lucky that no-one ploughed into the pair of us while we were 'exchanging pleasantries' in the fast lane.

I think I only get away with it because many people here over-estimate non-Japanese people's ability to punch them in the face...? Love to you and the family. Have a good day.

Sitting in the middle of a flight of public stairs would be like sitting in the middle of the road and then complaining when you get hit by a car. Both parties are at 100% shared fault. So nice stupid people can find each other and enjoy each other's company.

@gabriel-mission9: what stupid kids to sit in the middle of a flight of public stairs why not just sit in the middle of the public road and complain about a car hitting you or in the middle of the train tracks in be pissed when the train comes. You know nobody ever uses public stairs in a public setting so let's just sit on them. Stupid people deserve each other.
  • 3 3
@oldtech: these were rather wide stairs... Generally of all social groups I have least sympathy for students, but they could have a damn orgy in there and they wouldn’t bother anyone...
  • 5 2
@oldtech: erm. You seem to be misunderstanding the concept of stairs. Roads are designed for cars, train tracks for trains. Stairs are designed for pedestrians. Sitting on the stairs like this will cause no issue for pedestrians, so your comment makes no sense. Nothing wrong with the kids sitting there. The guy on the bike however is a thoughtless idiot, and the kids whos stuff he ran over are very cool for not getting angry

@gabriel-mission9: you must be one of the stupid people I am speaking about when you think it's perfectly okay to sit in the middle of a public pathway. People would always rather make excuses for their stupid actions then take credit for their responsibilities. The people sitting on the stairs are just as stupid as the cyclist and you for thinking it's alright to sit in the middle of a flight of stairs. End of story
  • 6 6
@oldtech: How much time per day do you spend on identifying stupid people? Resentment tends to take lots of computational power of the brain. It can also be blinding. You never know when it kicks in full swing and suddenly you wake up kicking a man on the street because he drove onto your lane on the way home on friday... or he kicks you as you failed to put him down first.

@southoftheborder: well, Umberto Eco is a village nerd, a kind of a Shaman. Will take your wife to his shed to remove toxins and evil spirits by sucking on her nipples and then fill her with healing seed. If you would have anything against it he’d make sure “normal people of the village” would grab you and impale you. You better bring him crack and weed from time to time as well. The law of diminishing returns is universal and applies to everything including intelligence. You may as well enjoy life Smile

 @tremeer023: I wouldn't say slowly.

@WAKIdesigns: I think you are mistaking a great linguistics expert with Carlos Castañeda. And I quoted Eco simply because I believe he's right. This whole conversation I'm having with you is the living proof of his words.
  • 2 5
@southoftheborder: You just proved my point. A worshipper I sense... Both Eco and Castañeda fulfill the archetypal role of Shamans, those who speak with the spirits and convey the knowledge to the other citizens of Earthly realm who are either terrified of the underworld or not sensitive enough to reach it. If you do claim yourself to be an adept of arts and intelligence, you should be able to recognize the elitism flowing from Ecos words, no matter how accurate they are. That as well as the impotence of that statement, perhaps a deliberate move, as it is open for interpretation. Because if Eco would be truly intelligent, he should be able to recognize the precious role of the village idiot thus he would not say it in a resentful way, which in turn would mean that he identifies this state as a problem and calls for finding a solution to it. The true idiot is then one who wants to seeks that solution. Trying to make social media better is a genuinely idiotic idea worth of power greedy tyrants and their miserable dogs. A wise old man like Eco would know to not f*ck with the jester... if you cannot get him on your side, you better kill him before you hear people laugh after hearings his jokes about you

Have a nice day

This guy is clearly an idiot who thinks he always has right of way. Sadly he's not alone. I live very close to one of Britain's largest universities and there are very few cyclists amongst the students. A result of this is that they are mostly completely unaware of bikes. The cycle lanes have more pedestrians on them than the pavements do and signs were needed to remind them to look before crossing roads (these were later sprayed on the floor as many don't even look up !!!!) With younger generations being on their phones all the time and with headphones on they are less aware of what's around them.
  • 1 0
Great example why the public 'loves' mountain bikers. No doubt this will be used in public meetings to deny access, Sierra Club proposals to close trails to cycling and elected officials opposing expansion of public land access for bicycles. Thanks, Pierre.

Everybody discusses about the students on the stair, he couldn't see them and he couldn't see if someone is on the stairs as well he should have checked. But the true size of his idioticy (is that even a word?) he shows at this gap on the wall at 3:02. You can see the kid already 4 seconds before he even reaches the gap, aswell as the kid. How stupid do you need to be to risk a kids life just for a clip that should look gnarly? Moron!
  • 1 0
I think it might be fake and with the guy bunny hopping the guy on the blue bike later in the video its pretty clear he was just being an idiot. I am a rider and might understand why he was riding some stairs because it is fun however I would still be kinda pissed off at him. Maybe the students were using the stairs incorrectly but it didn't really seem like he yelled too much either. Maybe he just had his super cool rap music up too loud.

 As said hundreds of times:
He´s an complete Idiot for doing this, alone for the attitude hes shown after the accident it wouldnt have been a suprise if he got beaten up.
Guys like him shouldnt be allowed to ride bikes not even a 28" City Bike as he will show this attitude on every type of bike, gives a baaaaaaddddd picture of his friends or other MTBers.

slow motion turn bars, baby. Sick.
  • 4 0
Wow, those kids took it way too well.
  • 4 0
What an dickbag. The thumbnail and 3:00 are shameful behavior.
  • 2 0
These riders are a bunch of pricks. Totally irresponsible riding and given other mountain bikers a bad name. Lucky no one was hurt not just the students.
  • 1 0
So this sets the precedent that you are promoting and putting reckless urban freeriding on the homepage if it gets lots of YouTube views? That's the criteria for Pinkbike?
@PinkbikeStaff
  • 1 0
If you are going to ride urban don’t be reckless. Think about your surroundings and the poeple who might be there. Assume the worst scenario of your actions and make sure you stay safe.
In summary don’t be this guy !!
  • 3 0
Urgh the music. Couldnt even get to the point where he faked running over someones bag. I switched off at the second 'eeeey'
  • 4 0
 nice slow-mo turnbars dork.

taking a different spin on this: why are these students out in the street instead of studying hard ?
If they keep slacking off they will end up brainless wannabe DH street biker on youtube... pulling out dick moves one after the other.
  • 2 0
Glad this was in a First World Country... here in Mexico, the dude wouldn't make it alive. People are less tolerant here... I hate it.

The goofball was more reckless than anything. He almost took out the head of another bike when he's riding on the low wall at about 3:05 mark. Having that rap music for that video makes this even more like a drive-by.
  • 1 0
Whoa, but did you guys see how he can move his front wheel at like a 35 degree angle when he goes off jumps? This guy is such a good rider.

What a f*cking twat that can't ride for shit.
  • 4 0
 Imbecile

A lot of folk too young to have seen the BMX and MTB vids of the 90s.
  • 3 0
Come on. Take this shit down pinkbike!
  • 1 0
Hopefully it doesn't happen but it sure looks like he's begging to get smoked by a vehicle while he's coming into some streets blind.
  • 3 0
Should Pinkbike really provide a platform for a*sholes like that?
  • 5 6
LOL, that comments section wouldn’t be any different if it was on the board of a retirement home... “those crazy young people, that’s just dangerous, wouldn’t have happened in our time... someone should punch him... blablabla...”
  • 4 1
No offence, but you have to realize that responsible young people DO exist.
  • 2 4
@uncajohn: Sure. I just didn’t think they rode mountain bikes. Aren’t there many more “responsible” hobbies? ;-)
  • 1 1
 @FuzzyL:
For them?
Sure thing. I suggest them to start sweeping the streets with a toothbrush for start....

You see, it only takes a few pricks like those to destroy the image of all the rest. Sometimes this (good) image has been the result of a collective effort that took some time. Things like that (prick on stairs) happen more often in trails all over the world, were a bunch of brainless are "pushing" all other users off the land. Imagine that here at Greece there are several web pages that suggest to the aspiring builders to "explain" to the various landlords that there's nothing they can do to prevent digging in their property!
It reminds me the BORG motto (prepare to be assimilated, all resistance... etc)

Of course this phenomenon is quite global.

 Stupid french rider !

But remember the old days of "Jackass"...nothing to compare of course, but they were stupid too,but a lot of people did like them...

 Wanker with wanker friends.
  • 1 0
If I'd been the guy a 3 minutes I would have chased him down and pushed him under a truck. I suspect the whole thing is actor populated clickbait though.
  • 1 0
I thought it looked a little fake. Just by the theme of the rest of the video too. Too man people stood around and bikes at the side if the roads or paths.
  • 1 0
Wait hang on.. They laughed it off???? In the UK the Rider would of quite likely been beaten to a pulp or worse (assuming they caught him)
  • 1 0
Urban DH has to be the dumbest sport I've ever seen. Like really...riding at high speed through populated areas is a massive twat move.
  • 2 0
Pinbike has lost credibility by supporting this (I did not watch the video btw)
  • 3 0
 Stupid rider.
  • 1 0
He almost takes out kid cycling at 3:05; amazing that he didn't take the kid's head off!!
  • 4 3
It's not urban assault if you don't piss anyone off. The night time is the right time.
  • 1 0
Not always in Europe. We have different drinking laws, cycling laws, cultures, street lighting etc...
  • 2 0
@djm35: basically night time is the right time for urban assault cause it is less crowded so you can be more reckless without running into innocent bystanders. Not sure what drinking laws have to do with it but if you care to educate me I'd love to learn something.

As far as pissing people off like I always say it's not meant to be a family friendly activity. You're taking risks and doing things that people aren't expecting and if you do that hard enough it will get some people's panties in a bunch.
  • 1 0
@mrgonzo: My point was that different drinking laws mean we can (and do) drink on the streets, mainly at night, so more drunk people acting unpredictably. I ride urban stuff and stairs sometimes so I'm not criticizing the act.
  • 2 0
Complete asshole. Good way to lose your bike and some teeth.

Similar to this video, but here every rider says the fault was on the girl, not the rider (no race that day, so the trail is open for everyone, cyclist and pedestrians) www.instagram.com/p/Bwc9fVAgepW
  • 11 1
Not similar at all. That's a trail. Where MTB traffic is expected. The rider in the video is riding on pedestrian sidewalks and stairs in a historical center of a town. Not sure about France, but in most countries in Europe it is prohibited to ride your bike on sidewalks for pedestrians. You either take a dedicated bike route or ride on the road with cars.
