Oct 15, 2020
by Ed Spratt

bigquotesA mixture of grass, roots, hard pack, loamy off cambers, natural gaps, big compressions, fast flat out sections & the world famous rock garden make the course in Maribor, Slovenia, one of the most exciting UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup venues around.

Hard to picture everything mentioned above? Get on board Gee Atherton's GoPro Course preview as he flies down this historic track.

 We've missed you,Gee!
I can't even begin to understand how someone is capable of talking and riding at that speed,my commentary would be something like "ooh sh!t! aaahh f##k!! " crawling all the way down.
  • 34 0
That big gap halfway down it almost seems like the commentary is dubbed, he's so unaffected by it.
  • 6 0
Yeah it's amazing how he's just casually chatting while hitting features that would kill most of us at his speed (which we couldn't reach anyway). Shows how next level those athletes are. And imagine the speed during a race run!
  • 2 0
@Slabrung: the gaps right up at the top in the trees must be 40 feet landing 2 feet from a tree and he's so casual about it. Madness.
  • 1 0
Sorry, it is a good props that I meant
  • 71 0
 2:50 did he just say "that log's shaped like a d!ck" ?
  • 26 0
Choose a log and be a d!ck about it Smile
  • 5 0
cause it actually was made to look like one
  • 5 0
Came here to ask the same haha
  • 4 0
Youtube autogenerated subtitles confirmed, "that log's shaped like a dick"
  • 17 0
Yes he did, I rewound that section twice to confirm. The best part is he added "not sure why" after making the observation.

This is clearly a failure of the race organizers, the significance of the dick shaped log will be central to this weekend's race and riders should have been briefed on it.

I don't have a crystal ball or anything, but I'm sure this will not the last we hear from that dick shaped log... more to come.
  • 1 0
I'm SO glad I'm not the only who came here to type that. And I love "not sure why" haha - as if you need a reason.
  • 5 0
@jaytdubs: disappointed to hear you don’t have crystal balls to go with the dick-shaped log...
  • 5 0
Might be the most I've laughed during a course preview. Completely caught me off guard. And then the casual "not sure why..." as he continues to rip down the track. Too good.
  • 5 0
"not sure why?" HA!!! Pure gold.
  • 1 0
@jaytdubs: Get a couple of drinks in RW and that's almost guaranteed.

I actually prefer Gee’s course previews. He’s great at describing all the sections. Good job!

Gee has proven himself to be the best track reviewer. Nothing against Claudio or other reviewers, but Gee does it best.
  • 5 1
 He’s legit @tremeer023:
  • 3 5
@tremeer023: I cant stand Claudio, Gee sounds much better.
  • 12 0
Gee is the like professional analyst and Claudio is the color commentator. Both fun to watch!
  • 2 0
@tremeer023: Straight up. Rides the track proper during the preview and actually understands the sections.

Gee really is a MTB treasure. What a career...... Not that I'm a big EWS fan but I'd love to see him give it a go. I bet he'd be on many podiums.
  • 4 0
Agreed and I am a big fan of EWS. Love to see him and Rachel there.
  • 10 0
That’s it... the weekend’s started now, welcome back Gee!

I wonder which is the criteria for pillow tree protection. Some looks unnecessary while others pass really close without protecion.
  • 8 1
They should cover the dick shaped ones...
  • 6 0
@curendero: they do but it's a big latex envelope that is single use... keeping it for the big day...

I absolutely LOVED Claudio and his course previews. That said, I find Gee's previews to be truly amazing with dialogue and analysis as he's absolutely hammering (to me, I know to him he's just cruising) the track.....it's honestly astounding how calmly he flies down that track and give wonderful commentary. Great job Red Bull picking him for this!

looks like im not fast enough to watch the video
  • 4 0
Great track preview Gee.Welcome back cant wait to see you racing this weekend.

Dear redbull, please upload the videos on 4k
  • 1 4
1080p for is truly not enough for POV videos. Even if the original video in 1080p is ok, the bitrate on YouTube for 1080p videos is too low for such videos. But I think that 1440p is usually good enough. I usually shoot in 4:3 and clip the frame to 16:9 1440p to get the best part of it. But I think for this particular video 1440p or 4K would not have made such a big difference. The problem was the low light. If the light is so low already the original video becomes blurred a lot - so a higher resolution would not have made much of a difference.
  • 1 0
@noox: higher res makes tons of difference for videos like that
  • 1 0
Don't need higher resolution as much as we need it recorded in "protune" which won't have as much artifacting
  • 3 0
It really is not hard when uploading a video to make it public. Seems to happen a fair bit....
  • 4 0
Oh maaan that track looks like so much fun asalways
  • 1 0
that's what I was thinking. I obviously wouldn't be at the same pace but it is one of the tracks I would most like to try that I have seen.
  • 1 0
definitely enjoyable for mere mortals, unlike some others
  • 2 0
I hope I see Gee man racing for another 10 years, and after that I hope RB picks him for commentating. He just kills it and sends it. Rampage to World Cups.

Thank you, if now red bull got the geoblogging shit right I am happy
  • 10 0
Considering that was nothing to do with red bull and everything to do with the UCI and who they sold the tv rights to
  • 1 0
Gee sayd: tune in to Redbull TV
Hope there'll be no geo blocking so I actually will be able to tune in
  • 1 2
 @vhdh666: Cheap f*ckers...
  • 2 0
As far as I know there was never a geoblocking for World Cups. But it has always been there for World Championships. It seems like TV stations are interested into broadcasting the World Championships. So the UCI sells them the rights to broadcast. And thus Red Bull is not allowed to stream it in those countries.
