Slay The Bay is the latest urban adventure from Hans Rey as he traverses the San Francisco Bay area in 5 days. He was joined by Freeride legend Brett Tippie as they explored this iconic city with its beautiful nature and trails on their mountain bikes and ebikes. Along the way they were joined by more superstars as they got to ride the legendary Repack Downhill with some of the original pioneers of mountain biking; Joe Breeze, Charlie Kelly and Otis Guy. And shred the trails in Pacifica with Junior Downhill World Champion Jackson Goldstone. Enjoy this 4K documentary has they explore this California city with its famous landmarks, people, culture and history - has well as many lesser known spots. Special guest appearance by Ancient Astronaut Theorist Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. Get yourself some popcorn and a beverage - let's Slay The Bay.— Hans Rey
Marin has so much potential, but the county is very much anti-mountain biking these days. Truly depressing, both for locals and for the history of the sport.
If you live in the East Bay area you also pay property taxes that go towards East Bay Regional Parks. Considering the cost of homes in this area EBRP is not struggling for money. They should use more of these funds to build better trails for Hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. Many of us share the same crappy fire roads and trails that are extremely steep in some areas. Especially after Covid, these areas are now highly populated with more people and some areas are difficult to find parking.
A bunch of MTB riders were ticketed (a common thing elsewhere). What isn't is how few trails can be access by mountain bikers despite lots of available land for trails, access for cattle, horseback riders, and ample access for dog walkers and hikers.
This despite 40 years of the sport being popular in the Bay Area. Feel free to contact there here if you happen to care about this kind of thing
not to mention they are part of the elite CA progressive community that is all for progressive policies on one hand, and on the other cite "mountain lion habitats" as the reason that they won't allow multi family homes to be built near their mansions. Most of the wealthy areas of CA are filled with progressive rich people who preach inclusivity and practice nimbyism at every chance.
@Chafingdish: I blame the progressive left that has yet to live any of their virtues out en masse. it's funny to me that the most "blue" cities are also the cities with the greatest homeless issues and income disparities (LA and SF)
@Caligula1620: seriously though, nimbyism is annoying, no matter the politics of the person. The very wealthy are generally out of touch, no matter their politics. But land management in Marin county, and pinkbike comments section, are not related to social welfare issues in big cities.
@Chafingdish: except this is directly related to land management in Marin county, hence why I commented under the post talking about Marin county lol. No arguing that both ends of the spectrum are out of touch but you'd be hard pressed to find very conservative/wealthy districts in California.
@winkeyless: yep never denied it's on both sides, but again the left runs California and it's pretty much up to them to enact the virtues they're always preaching but year after year they vote for more corruption and degradation. sad really, this state is gorgeous and bad governance is really the main thing driving people out.
@penguinni: Back when Vernon Felton was a writer for Pinkbike he wrote a story about growing up in the eastbay and how frustrating this exact problem has been.
I was warned today at a local EBRD Park that thee had been some ticketing going on and to be careful. The trails to poach at this particular park are just cow paths and they aren't anything special at all but "mountain bikes are bad" and cannot be allowed on anything narrower than 8 feet.
Robert E Doyle as the General Manager of 2020 for EBRP was making $349,641 are year but is now retired and is a "consultant" for EBRP.
The Deputy General Manager Ana M Alvarez makes $285,427.
Since taxpayers money, this information is public if you search. In short it's disgusting how much they get paid for how little they do to improve our trails and brag about how they have 1330 miles of trails in east bay and service 30 million visitors each year.
@femto505: yeah 1330 miles of "trails" the vast majority of which are service roads left over from the defaulted farms they bought and were never intended for recreational use. The actual miles of narrow trails that bikes are currently allowed on is laughable.
I appreciate that the EBRPD is there to stop the urban sprawl but goddamn, can we please enjoy the open space? Having all that land and not being allowed to use it is like having those stupid "just for looks" towels in the bathroom.
@ripridesbikes: The politics is quite turned around here. Accessing the trail head in Augustin Bernal Park from Golden Eagle Way in Pleasanton is through a gated community. The trail head is managed with our tax dollars and if you can't provide residency from Pleasanton they will not allow you in.
@SterlingArcher: I mean who doesn't want to be a rich snobby democrat who doesn't let any affordable housing get built near their mansion? I'm sure aside from the routine pegging that goes along with that lifestyle, it's pretty enjoyable. (I know I got you interested with that last bit )
It's only anti-mountain biking among the very old. Give us time, we'll open it up. Plus, there's plenty of riding to be done if you don't mind dodging rangers.
Haha, great how you can live in California for more than a quarter of a century and still sound so very German. And then the title, only a German (or a comic book obsessed 12 year old) could come up with something like that.
But anything that features Joe Breeze will always make me smile, such a legend, and yet always happy to deliver a lesson in mountain bike history to everyone he meets.
Great edit!! As a resident of the Bay it was fun to watch. Only thing that would have made it more authentic is if Hans got his bikes stolen in SF. Haha. So many legends and fun watch.
Sweet video. Good to see Hans still kicking butt. The OG Mountain bike crew borrowing a few from the museum... Dig it. The sport has come a long way. Here's to another 40 years.
Man, there is just a split second of a shot showing Hans hitting a drop in Pacifica, WOW. That is a massive hit that makes some guys look like rag dolls after landing, I don't know if I'll ever consider sending it but Hans made it look so smooth! And Props to Tippie for sending the ladder drop (which I'm sure was nothing special for him given his background.)
So you’ve gotta BMX background eh? Pffff These guys have just about every background in the alphabet BMX, MTB, EMTB, Trials, Moto-x, EWS, DH, Rampage, etc
I love incorporating mountain biking here and there into long urban rambler adventure rides, it makes for a whole days adventure. I used to do very long rides like this when i was younger, but now it has waned in my later years. thank you hans for bringing back the stoke for me, excellent video!!
The style of the video somehow reminds me of typical TV station. But it really made me smile. It’s cool to see several generations of mtb riding together. Thanks Hans!
You can down load an app that locates human excrement that the homeless and drug addicts deposit on the sidewalks along with needles so to avoid while touring the city streets. Yes, so shit hole it is along with its demented, radical leftest politics.
It's more than a hole at this point. What is the largest form of hole, a crater? But hey they have the Poop Patrol and per a online resource of unknown credibility the number of reported deuces was down YoY from Jan-Jul 2020 vs 2021 from 16,547 to 13,856 street feces reports or just 72 street poops per day that someone stepped in.
@likeittacky: Yep. Ive worked in SF for 25+ years. It is disgusting sad mess. Ive seen it all. Its so bad now I will not bring my wife kids to the city . Gotta love the POS that run Cali snd SF.
@bikeetc: we are bros bruh! Mtn biking is our connection. Don’t take that for granted, my brother and friend. You are so enlightened I want to learn from your enlightenment!
@SterlingArcher: You fukd up causing others to reproach you and continue to keyboard assail them then plea for pity. (@og-squid-mtb) was refereeing to the degradation of a once beautiful city that is now being shit all over today. People that reside there will say the same thing. It wasn't about any individual but the environment and of those that recklessly degrade it. You made it personal like a dumb ass.
@tomhouse: Ok buddy . 85% of SF streets are filed with drug attics , piss and shit and used needles . Oh and don't forget the trash. Them's just the facts . I see it everyday .
@og-squid-mtb: A city with some of the richest people in the world that gets no snow or hardly any bad weather but has the streets of a Third World country.
@SterlingArcher: Bruh, come on out to SoCal, I will enlighten you. Fuk your Vaxx, mask and liberal Bullshit. Bring an open mind and your bike. I’m down for a good ride.
Looking at the singletracks in neighboring counties: Alameda has JMP. Sonoma has Annadel. San Mateo has Skeggs. Santa Cruz has Demo and UC.

No arguing that both ends of the spectrum are out of touch but you'd be hard pressed to find very conservative/wealthy districts in California.
What I found is that NIMBY-ism exists in both left and right. Maybe it's just selfishness and indifferences in another form.
