Keep the hardtail videos coming! I just got my Stylus frame in the mail.
  • + 8
and I just adopted a Wideangle Big Grin
  • + 4
 You picked the right one
  • + 5
New to me Ragley Blue Pig got here Thursday! Stoked for some HT action!
  • + 4
@CovertSD: I have been riding my Wideangle for the past 9 months. Brings me back to riding my first bicycle, a 1971 Schwinn. The steel is still very real & still very fun!!
  • + 4
My Rootdown is two seasons old, effin love it. It was between the custom build Rootdown BA and a Fuel EX 9.8 and I went hardtail. Don't regret it a minute.
  • + 2
You are gonna love that Stylus. I had one for a bit - Truly a DGAF burly hardtail that's capable of just about anything. I now have a Monk set up singlespeed that also sees some trail duty. Chromag has the modern hardtail dialed.

Just love my On One Deed Dar with 160mm Pike, 26" Flows, Ardent 2.4s Slx brakes, Saint 10 speed shifter and 125 dropper. I ride it and wonder why I need a long travel dual sus bike...
  • + 2
@headshot: Oh man. DeeDar here, with 160 Mattoc Pro. 26", 47mm trials wheels. SLX brakes. Zee shifty bits. 150mm OneUp dropper. We could almost be twins. Will huck that steel steed off anything.
  • + 1
Some hardtail love here too. Riding a BTR Ranger, 26" wheels specific.
  • + 1
@AllMountin: sounds great... my legs took a few months to adjust to acting as the rear suspension but now I hardly notice... some wider rims and 2 6 tyres would be great.
  • + 1
I'm running a 2.8" minion(2.6 actual) front, and 2.4 Goma rear. Pretty solid, high traction combo.

 Love my stylus!

 absolutely love mine

With roots in BMX and old school freeride HT hucking and well over decade and some of riding FS bikes. In 2017 I got a new Mistress and went back to my roots of HT bikes. I bought a 2017 Norco Torrent HT with plus size tires. Best choice I ever made. It's the bike I spent a lifetime trying g to build with the frames/geo/components available. Never quite achieving the desired blend BMX and tough as balls MTB. But with the newer aggressive tech/geo/plus tires of today's HT's I now have that. It's my "do everything, quiver killer" My riding has been the most fun and the best skills wise in years. Also pushing my personal limits. So happy to see the HT pride coming back and flourishing again. #HTprideforlife

This could be my review of the Torrent to a T. Though lacking the roots in BMX, I pretend like that's my specialty on every trail ride I leave out on - such a playful DGAF bike. It hucks, it rails, it helped me cover the 500+ miles of the Colorado Trail.

So happy with the direction hardtails have taken.

@mtnbkmann: Exactly! Such a beast that bike. I rode from Vancouver Island to Nelson (roughly 800km) just few months after I bought it and have done many long distance/back country/ multi day trips with it. Love that bike.

Great edit but speeded up doesn't look better, if anything it makes good riding and filming look slightly worse.
  • + 4
I'm curious what tire size this frame actually can run? On the home page it says max ETRTO is 60x622, but bikes are specced with 2.5WT which is ETRTO 63x622. Which is it? Really a deal breaker if you ride in mud.

Also tried asking the same question repeatedly on Commencal Facebook, but no answer in a month...
  • + 1
Have the meta crmo frame with the same 60 etrto specs and run a Michelin wild enduro 2.4 in the rear.. it is a 61 etrto.. has slight rub on non drive side when cornering really hard. The michelins are pretty big tires tho. Different frame, but maybe that'll help?
  • + 2
 @cap6cap3: is that a joke? You’re seriously buzzing a 2.4? Sort it out @commencal
  • + 1
lol I asked the same question and they didn't answer me either. Bike looks sick though.
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: well it does say 60 max.. so 2.3s I guess, no biggie, pretty awesome bike, wasn't expecting the frame to fit plus tires.
  • + 2
I got this frame and am running a normal 2,4 tire in the back and have got more than a centimeter on each side at the chain stay , at the seat stay it is more than 2 centimeters. This frame is designed for + size tires so there is plenty of clearance for normal tires, it almost looks like too much.
  • + 4
0:18 that Sunn from the 90s lying there! ancestor of the Commençals. Rad detail Max Commençal!
  • + 2
 @kabelleira well spotted!
  • + 1
you had me at barcelona! and, i really need to put a better fork on my cromag...
  • + 2
Is it just me or are hardtails a new trend?! Nice riding Wink
  • + 2
nothing new about hardtails, apart from wheel sizes?
  • + 6
@aljoburr: modern (long, slack, low) geo has really helped the capabilities of hodays hardtails. Therefore, helping them become a worthy contender in any quiver. Old tech, in a new form.
  • + 5
Its just you. And your not British which is the home of hardcore hardtails since time began. Nothing better in the mud????
  • + 4
After riding long travel 29ers for the past few years, having a poppy 27.5 hardtail feels like riding a BMX bike in the woods. Ya gotta keep it fresh!
  • + 4
@mtbmdc: yah man it turns a technical trails into a downhill street bmx session
  • + 4
With the prices of FS's right now, you can kit out a very capably HT and still have beer money (and food, and gas and mortgage, and pocket change) to spare. Nothing fancy, but the 2017 NSDjambo frame I built up, with a 160mm Pike on it has been a blast to ride. I probably spent 92.5% of my time this year on it. Highly recommend it
  • + 1
@adriemel83: honestly I’m about three seconds faster on my full suss than my hardtail. If you’re not racing or riding big terrain on the regular they’re the way to go. Honestly 75% of riders would be better on a hardtail. Hilarious the amount of enduro race bikes you see dribbling around 10 year old trail centres in the uk.
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: I expected some improvement in overall riding after HT-ing for a bit, but was blown away at how much my trail reading and technical riding has improved. Getting forced to properly ride a trail, rather than let the suspension ride it for you is an eyeopener, especially when keeping similar speeds going. Jumping on the squishy bike is even smoother now. The enduro I rode this summer damn near did me in though... so many leg cramps trying to go race speed using calf and quad suspension!
  • + 1
@adriemel83: yeah you’ve got to be super aggressive on a hardtail so good for improving your skills. Once you’ve got used to ragging a hardtail around and you jump on a full suss everything feels easy.
  • + 1
I gotta admit I bought into it and got a Honzo, but I don't find it very fun other than on silky smooth groomed trails. I think I'm going to trade it in for a short-travel fs instead.
  • + 3
Not a new trend but more like a realization that an all mountain hardtail is the craft beer of bikes when done right.
  • + 1
@dthomp325: have you given it a proper go? I was having the best fun ever today on my hardtail.
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: yes, I've given it a "proper go". Just not for me. Fs is faster, more comfortable, safer, and more fun on most terrain.
  • + 1
@dthomp325: yeah the whole point in riding a hardtail. You actually have to ride it and not let the bike do it for you. Well if your not having fun what’s the point?
  • + 1
@thenotoriousmic: ride whatever is fun for you. FS is more fun for me.
  • + 1
love hardtails! a shame that my honzo al got cracked, now I´m back on full sus!!!!
  • + 2
How did you manage to crack a honzo?
  • + 1
And where it cracked? Would like to know the weak spots to keep an eye for.
  • + 1
I love my HT...especially when I can scrub those self centered fullsuspended dumb fucks on the trails haha!!!
  • + 1
Nice trails, have Cycled round Barcelona but how far out of BCN do you need to go too find good trails?
  • + 2
Not far at all. The Collserola range right behind the city is full of beautiful singletrack.
  • + 10
@aljoburr i live in Bcn and The trails in this video are a mix of our local trails and trails in a place called Santa Coloma de Farners. The local trails are 30mins Bike ride from The city or roughly the same time by public transport. Santa coloma is a bit of a Mecca in catalunia for the number of awesome trails and is about 1h drive from the city (or train ride to Sils). We are very fortunate over here in terms of riding spots!
  • + 3
@metareal: Barcelona is such a rad city!
  • + 1
@metareal: Yes thanks for that! will check out next time I am down that way, yes is so many good trail near Bcn have ridden around Tiana just up the coast & ametlla del valles, super steep climbs, but have to brake too much on desents. Or maybe just need too ride them more to know where dont have too brake as much
But can stress how much there is too ride, just pick a hill and find some trails as easy as that?
  • + 3
@aljoburr: there are many trails for sure, but as always it s best to know where you are going. Next time you are here send me a PM and I ll show you around.
  • + 3
@metareal: Now I have even more of a reason to visit Barcelona over Madrid lol.
  • + 1
Thanks, Hope too have an interesing bike built on a Santacruz Tallboy C front triangle built soon!
