Full Video Highlights: EWS Olargues, France 2018

May 15, 2018
by Enduro World Series

The third round of the Enduro World Series will go down in the history books as one of the most technical races to date. The trails of Montagnes du Caroux tested both bikes and bodies as rain made an unwelcome return to proceedings, throwing even the most seasoned riders off balance. However, no amount of rain could dampen the fire in one racer's belly, and amongst the slippy rocks in this quiet corner of France, a new championship battle emerged that could well rage for the rest of the season.

Thank you Pinkbike for the excellent free coverage of the EWS. Putting out a 20 minute highlights package 2 days after the event is pretty impressive too.

*anyone who complains that last section is... "Too gnarly" should go play chess*

DH WC be like: EWS stop shaming our courses, Leogang is hard, too.

I'm as big a fan of Richie Rude as anyone and I'm stoked to see him back on point again, but it is silly and honestly somewhat disrespectful of the current front runners who are much closer to Hill like Oton and Walner to be talking about a championship push at this point. Rude needs at least top 3 result in the next couple races with Hill meanwhile falling significantly off pace to be a real threat for the overall.

To be clear I'm not taking anything away from Rude or his win; hiis comment in the interview was perfectly reasonable, I just don't see why the coverage is weaving a story that is a long ways from plausible right now when there are so many other narrative threads they could be developing. As it stands, based on the points Maes is a bigger threat to the overall after having missed a race due to injury, but then roaring right back onto the podium.

Dude, don't stir the pot. They said it that way because they dont want a single rain in the next rounds. Wink

"I just don't see why the coverage is weaving a story that is a long ways from plausible right now when there are so many other narrative threads they could be developing"
Dollar bills y'all!
That, and everybody loves a comeback.

I see your point, but I don't think there's any disrespect to the other riders.

Richie is a two-time world champ, and in 2016 he had a run of 4 or 5 First Place wins during the series. plus this year he took 2 or 3 stages in Chile before a flat (what else?) ruined his race. If it's dry, and he's not flatting or getting mechanicals, Rude is as much a beast as Hill. There are five events left, I can easily see Rude putting together 2-3 first places and putting pressure on Hill and the other top 5-10 to continue to produce great results...hell Dailly will to...

Plus the narrative is former two-time champ (and young kid) chasing the greatest racer of all time (and elder statesman)...that's totally compelling...

Richie won 4 stages in Chile and was very much on pace for a win or at worst a podium there. Add in this rounds win and it's obvious he had the pace to be a dominant force like he was in 2015-2016. If he gets on a roll of confidence he could very much steal the title away this season.

be pissed about trudeau, not some guy on a bike.
  • + 35
Gutted for Jesse, 0.01 behind in 1st stage and then broken collar bone. Please heal up fast,

I wonder if he can make it to Petzen.

That rocky shoot on stage 7 HOLY CRAP!! "I'd like to high five all the amateurs who rode through that" well said Mr. Rude!
  • + 3
that chute looks sick I'd love to give it a gone, I'd for sure wear my body armour though
  • + 22
Anyone else amazed at how a lot of these privateers are beating sponsored pros?
  • + 16
Youn for the win! This guy come out from almost nowhere and take a top 10 each venue!
  • + 20
I don’t understand how these guys and gals can cartwheel/face plant in the rocks and come away unscathed for the most part (Melamed aside).

Many can ride fast, but these guys are indestructible!
  • + 3
They must be strong, flexible, and tough for sure. My guess is the training they do in the gym, diet, and various therapies all play a role.
  • + 1
I thought we all did that... I haven't had a cut, contusion, sprain, break or bruise free body for over 20 years... but growing up (and continuing to skateboard, too) must make for a different sort of view on riding...

I have to eat some crow for all the jokes I made at enduros’ expense when it first took off. This is some great racing.
  • + 3
 mmm sweet sweet delicious crow

12.57 you know if Sam Hill crashes its f*cking tough.
  • + 13
Except for that time he crashed on a grassy turn

What a men's podium that is - all under 25, all with slightly different styles and have all won races. These fellas (plus Jesse) could dominate EWS for years - but the exciting thing is that there are a lot of others who are all right there: Hill (obvs), Oton, Galy, Nicolai, Mark Scott rising fast along with a host of others like Deniaud and Tordo. Crazy to see studs like Jared and Keene dropping down the rankings as these hungry crew rise up. Awesome.

Also how the hell does Dailly float over some of those sections like that?! Witchcraft?
  • + 5
Enduro, once known as "the retired old man DH". Yeah right.
  • + 7
It is crazy to think that I look forward in watching the highlights video although I know the results. EWS is so exciting. What a pity not having a live coverage!
  • + 1
You're really going to watch 12 hours of racing each day?
  • + 1
@Rubberelli: does RedBullTV show all the athletes in a DH race?
  • + 1
@TZAK: DH is only one track. You would have to show something while Hill climbed to the next stage if it's live so you might as well show the rest of the pack (god forbid it would just be a bunch of highlights and analysis). The only place you would save time is on the final stage, where you could cut off the broadcast after the top 20 or whatever.
  • + 8
Great video EWS or whomever puts it together!
  • + 6
Whoever edited this dropped the ball. The highlights should've just shown 20 minutes of footage from that chute on stage 7, that was nuts!
  • + 7
You also want to watch this then, in this edit you can apreciate way more the riding:

 @PauRexs: This above x100
  • + 2
@PauRexs: Watched that before this, cheers anyway.
  • + 1
@Orangesicle: I was reclaming this in last EWS in amrica , a more raw edit like this focused more on the riding and let the EWS official do it s own... But like I was saying that format for my taste is too encapsulated and repetitive allready and may be missing somehow the most important.......
  • + 7
Every time I watch enduro footage, I want to buy a 36.
  • + 6
I so look forward to these videos after each race.
  • + 1
I am surprised though by how much they risk it in the technical chute... It doens´t seem like it's worth it. I wonder this many times and yet pros seem to do it quite a lot, I guess that's the difference. Or they just can't turn it off haha
  • + 5
This is not that one EWS hill in Ireland with that one iconic rock passage. This is just the one gnarly chute they filmed, because it's one of the nastiest and reasonably accessible. A lot of those trails are just one rock chute after the other. There is no easy way down them, because there is no place to scrub speed in the wet. It's worth it, because there is no other way... If you do not commit a 100% on all those sections, you will lose a lot of time.
  • + 1
@jeroenk: Im not so sure man, it just seems like some could pull it off and others couldn't,I mean daily on the lapierre killed it. And surely falling over is slower than rolling the thing. Maybe it's unrollable as you say. Videos suck in that sense, I should go what the next one live haha.
  • + 1
@stefanfresh: there is a course preview EWS did where you can see that stage and it is just one chute right after another. That may be the nastiest, but I didn't see any rider just trying to fly through. They all seem to slowly set up their line at the top and then let go of the brakes, which is the only way to make it down a steep, wet rocky chute like that.
  • + 2
Wow, Rude hunting for The Championship. Hill is not going to let this bring him down. Still has a Good lead. This is going to be a Excellent Series. Looking Forward To Seeing Next Stage.
  • + 29
Yeah, But Did You Have To Capitalize All The Words In The Last Sentance?
  • + 13
@AnthonyQDJ: Could have been worse; my Dad would capitalise each word and replaced full stops with exclamation marks. Every email was like a ransom note from an over-excited kidnapper.
  • + 1
First, and foremost, props to PB for the great coverage on such a short turnaround time. Don't get me wrong, though, I rather have 13 minutes of action and riders comments than being tortured by the monotonous voice of the Irish guy stating the obvious. Perhaps it is just me, but I take quality over quantity any time of the day. Please, guys, at least consider a format change. Thanks.
  • + 1
Anyone else notice how the women are comparatively older than the men? For the top 10 they're just over 3 years older on average. Throw out Cecile and they're still >2 years older. Reasons?
  • + 4
Women develop their confidence as they get a bit older.. don't give as much of a f#*k about the 'small stuff'??!! Certainly true for my ride crowd anyhow!
  • + 2
It may be absolutely ridiculous, but I like cheering for Richie more since he got rid of the star wars helmet.God that thing was awful.
  • + 4
 Yeeeeee bikessssss
  • + 1
Great video, but I don't remember music in previous videos when showing the riders riding? Personally I would prefer no music and being able to listen to the raw footage.
  • + 3
 Can't unsee that shoe-sock combo
  • + 3
Flags at half mast ravers!! I'm stuck at work!!
  • + 1
Good to see the stages. Wish there was some video of the actual racing though!
  • + 1
So a great racing, Looking Forward To Seeing Next Stage

Someone teach this guy that "th" doesn't equal "f"

Never heard a Scottish accent? Better stay right there in 'Merica where the English is just how you like it.

 @Hill-Seeker: Rick is Irish ;-)

 @Hill-Seeker: Well said Dude ;-)

Someone told you that we don`t give a shit about your ignorance?
