It's all fun and games until Rudolph crosses the trails... @jannicklange nearly punctured his lung after this wild run-in with an elk. He is alright and on the mend.

Well, he was riding in portrait. Had he been riding in landscape, he would have seen it coming.

not sure I get it. Is it the hunting part of hunters you dont like? Or just that the hunters are out there?

@rzicc: Apparently hunters are reporting illegal bicycle trails.

@rzicc: The snitch part I assume.

That wasn’t an elk, that was Brage from the other video.

Are we sure that rider's name is Jannick and not Wade? I'm sure I heard something somewhere about Roe vs Wade.

Oof. Expected the elk to be just standing in the trail but looked like he came out of the bushes with his antlers down ready for a fight.

Is it rutting season in that part of the world?

Glad you’re ok.

it is rutting season right about now.

Guy is lucky this was a deer and not an elk. Out here in Idaho, the bull elk are about 2-3 times the size of your average deer
  • 5 3
@pierceklinke: definitely an elk.looked like a well developed, but not huge or totally mature, 5x5
  • 3 0
@pierceklinke: hmmm actually I guess this in Europe…

@samdeatley: I'm fairly sure it is a Red Deer / Red Stag as Jannicklange is in europe.

Just was like: "That's not an elk, that's a red deer..."
Turns out for the british, an elk is an elk, for the americans an elk is a red deer. What!? Why!?

According to the riders instagram post it was in Lac Blanc, there are no elks there, but red deer.
  • 12 0
Elk (Cervus canadensis) and Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) are two different species.
  • 3 0
@TerrapinBen: According to dict.cc elk does sometimes get translated to "Rothirsch" in German, which would be the red deer. Just based on where it is, Lac Blanc in the Alsace region of France, it is 100% a red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Edit: Elk also can be translated to "Elch" in German. That would be, according to Wikipedia, Alces alces.
  • 1 0
According to me (american) and the internetz, what the British call an elk is actually a moose (Alces alces). I have never called a deer an elk. When I see an elk, it is quite large, and it is not a deer.
  • 9 0
We know about whelks, but not so much about elks.
  • 7 0
This makes more sense. It is way too small to be a north american elk.
  • 3 0
 @ct0413: Mmmmm moose....
  • 8 0
@ct0413: being actually British. A moose is one of those big things that run around in Canada. An elk is different to a moose. More like a massive red deer. He can run around in other places

Hot darn. Where was this? It’s technically elk season in most of the west, so buy a tag and he’d have the best meat in North America for a year…
  • 36 31
Elk is fun for a little variety, but not my favorite meat by a long shot - like a super lean cut of beef, not really a unique flavor to real make it jump out. I don't eat tons of meat these days, but when I want red meat that isn't beef I always like to play the field... but come back to lamb.
  • 9 9

@Adamrideshisbike Except that nutty lunatic ideas whipped up of the top of the head without basis in fact or actual reality - just BS musings, the pure definition of "don't want to explain why" because its all opinion. The US ultra left & right in the US (and maybe you guys too) are both neck-deep in the stench of it and its truly sad - what was formerly a solid, rational center has devolved into opinionated tools & idiots without the actual foundation of facts - and Rogan leads the charge.

@VelkePivo: don't confuse pseudoscience with "the science". Easy to do.
  • 17 12
@VelkePivo: Pretty sure nobody said "can't" Just that it reduced the chances. However, we did need to learn a lot in a very short time, so things did evolve. That's how science works.
  • 13 9
 @Chuckolicious:

“So even though there are breakthrough infections with vaccinated people, almost always the people are asymptomatic and the level of virus is so low it makes it extremely unlikely — not impossible but very, very low likelihood — that they’re going to transmit it." -- Anthony Fauci (and in fact they were just as, or nearly as, infectious)

"People who are vaccinated for the coronavirus cannot spread it to you." - Joe Biden
  • 15 9
@VelkePivo: OK, So Fauci said that in May of 2021. Like I said, he did not say "can't", so thanks for the verification. As to Biden, yea, he did say that last December before Omicron started raging, so I stand corrected on that, however at the time, he was "kinda" right with the original variants. So, like I said, things evolved over a very short period of time, just like science does.

flag VelkePivo (Oct 12, 2022 at 15:11) (Below Threshold)
@Chuckolicious: “When you get vaccinated, you not only protect your own health and that of the family but also you contribute to the community health by preventing the spread of the virus throughout the community,” Fauci said. “In other words, you become a dead end to the virus. And when there are a lot of dead ends around, the virus is not going to go anywhere."

The larger point is, science doesn't proceed from authority, and at its core is supposed to be humility. Instead what anyone with misgivings or skepticism received was ridicule, at best, or a loss of livelihood at worst.
  • 10 3
@VelkePivo: That’s from the same statement in May ‘21. And with the information we had at the time, it was perfectly reasonable. What’s your point?
  • 11 15
flag Adamrideshisbike (Oct 12, 2022 at 16:54) (Below Threshold)
@Chuckolicious: perfectly reasonable to make inferences with no basis. That's why people don't trust public health. But y'all think a podcaster is the problem.
  • 5 2
@Adamrideshisbike: not sure what that means. Can you explain?
  • 7 2
@Adamrideshisbike: No. It means utter bullshit that isn't proven or backed up by the scientific method.....you know, the process that put a man on the moon and allowed for pretty much everything else that we enjoy in the modern world. Including the bikes we ride.
  • 9 2
@Chuckolicious: LOl.It's not worth arguing with people with this mindset. Unlike science that will try to disprove itself and accept that and move forward they will take that one "fact" to the grave. Sadly sometimes quite literally.

@mtb-jon: Your cited studies are outdated. Your "reputable" sources now admit the vaccines do not prevent or substantially mitigate transmission. You can just look around you at all the vaccinated and boosted people who got Covid 2, 3 or more times. As for efficacy at mitigating the severity of covid, I and most others would agree that has been clearly demonstrated. But so does losing weight and taking vitamin D. Consider the possibility that it's you and your ilk who are the ones impervious to evidence and good sense for social reasons.
  • 4 3
@Chuckolicious: The point is he and others spoke declaratively that what they said was TRUE and ridiculed people who had doubts, and those people have been proven correct. The whole point of mandates was to protect others, and the vaccines did little-to-nothing to stop transmission.
  • 4 4
@Dustfarter: I promise you I'm at least as science-minded as you. Your utter certainty is itself unscientific in spirit
  • 4 4
@VelkePivo: hey man Covid is a bit of a done deal now, we’ve worked it all through using science, which is just a process for understanding the world, and are out the other side with a fairly solid understanding of it all. I think the other nuts have left you behind and are on to Trump or crypto now, time to move on eh?
  • 3 2
 Spot on@Adamrideshisbike:
  • 5 4
@Peskycoots: But "we" didn't work through it with just science. It was an ugly mix of tribalism, fear, politics and profit. And talk to Dustfarter about moving on.
  • 4 1
@VelkePivo: i cant fint any sources to youre claims from any peer reviewed studies. Could you link the ones youre talking about?

three of my links are dated inbetween january and august 2022. where the steongest supporting study is dated 25 august 2022. Is it really outdated?

I really would advice against trusting anecdotal observations above peer reviewed studies when it comes to statistics.

  • 4 7
@carters75: So you're a proud listener of a white guy who makes copious use of the N-word, among other deep character flaws; got it.
  • 5 5
@mtb-jon: When I see vaxxed and boosted people all round me and in the media getting covid, I don't need a study to know it was in error to say the vaccine prevents transmission. I would advise thinking for yourself and not completely trusting authority.
  • 4 3
@mtb-jon: His response was sad, but not at all surprising. Oh well, can’t fix…
  • 7 5
@VelkePivo: yeah... kinda hard to take you serious when you tell med to think for myself while saying that you get youre convictions from the tv in the same breath.

You do realize that the people around you got covid not because the vaccine was ineffective but because people around them didnt get vaccinated.
It really doesnt take more then two brain cells to figure that one out.
I can excuse ignorance but being antivaxx in 2022? Come on, that is just being straight up dumb
  • 5 0
 well, that escalated quickly...
  • 2 1
@mtb-jon: I see what you're saying. The "vaccine" also didn't prevent infection. lol
  • 5 1
@mtb-jon: I appreciate you engaging with this topic, however I think the opening statement of your second paragraph is a gross overstatement, and I am saying that as a vaxxed and boosted person. Ever since the emergence of the Delta variant, which happened in late Spring 2021, about 4-5months after the vaccines were rolled out, the vaccine effectiveness took a serious hit, such that vaxx advocates should have recalibrated and gotten off their high horses when it comes to the transmission issue. This outbreak (www.reuters.com/world/us/majority-covid-19-cases-large-public-events-were-among-vaccinated-us-cdc-study-2021-07-30) should have been a wake up call for everyone, but the public health messaging remained largely unchanged, so I can understand the vaxx skeptics being frustrated.

There is still a strong argument to be made for vaxxes reducing serious illness or death, but that is largely a case based on self interest, rather that community interest and preventing the spread. Similarly, antibody levels drop precipitously in the months after receiving an MRNA vaxx such that you are pretty much back to baseline after 4-5months. There is still the some potential for protection from B and T cell immunity, but that hasn't been quantified, so making statements as to the level of protection retained 6+months post dose are unwarranted.

Again, I am vaxxed and recently boosted, but I am under no illusions that it will provide me with a high degree of protection against contracting or passing on Covid, particularly the Omicron variants now circulating, and that goes doubly once I get past that 4ish month period of elevated antibodies. I got the recent booster due to plans I had for a few high risk events in this time period, but in no way do I consider myself morally superior to someone who chooses not to get vaxxed. It really irritates me to see people who got the initial doses and no recent boosters, acting as if they are well protected 12+ months later (they're not), going maskless (despite Omicron being in wide circulation), all while talking trash about the unvaxxed.

If you've gotten all available boosters, and are wearing a properly fitted N95 respirator in all public indoor settings (which offers better protection than the vaxxes), then my apologies, you're doing your part and deserve to ride a high horse, and can freely talk trash about everyone else, both vaxxed and unvaxxed.
  • 5 4
@mtb-jon: I'll close out my participation here by saying I'm not the least bit "antivaxx." If I didn't have a hyper-active immune system and medical advisement not to take the vaccine, I would have. What I am against is the immediate bullying that took place, the idiotic lockdowns, and I'm deeply suspicious of how pharma, their political donees and media all fell into lockstep.
