Must Watch: Remy Metailler Shreds Squamish Classics with Incredible Drone Footage

bigquotesSeeing what race drone can do I have always wanted to film a mountain biking edit with one.

When Raphaël Boudreault-Simard (@flowmotionaerials) reached out to film and I was stoked to have an opportunity like that to showcase my riding, the place we live and ride and hopefully inspire people to get out and mountain bike.

Riding with a drone behind me was definitely a challenge but Raphaël was super dialled! I could not believe how he would fly that thing around! It was super fun to see him visualize and practice the line like a rider would do, and then fly it several times until he got the speed and the line like he wanted.

I recently moved to Squamish, and have loved the trail riding up there. The fun is endless and I hope this edit gets you pumped on going outside and riding your bike.

 So I tried something like this with a friend who does quadcopter racing, the the issue we kept having is that the range of the camera is piss poor when you're in the trees. We had maybe 30 yards before the pilot would lose signal (and I suck at riding).

 @hamncheez: makes me wonder if they could set up multiple drone sites along a race course and shoot a few hundred yards at a time? Every other sporting event has multiple cameras patched into one feed. I know it would be outrageously expensive and probably super hard to execute. But we can dream.

 @Trudeez: there is a new GHz antenna that's supposed to work better. also it's very hard to fly in the trees because you can't really see branches. The pilot in this video is insanely good

 They could also maybe program the trajectory of the drone, so that they don't even need to pilot it, then the drone only has to adapt its speed to the rider. This could be even better for enduro where the tracks are too long to place a camera at each corner.

 @remymetailler: that would be awesome. Stationary cameras can't cover all of the action during the race. On the other hand, I am not sure that I want to see crashes up close ... hmmm

 I think this format reduces the "GoPro effect" quite a bit. You get perspective on how big and steep these trails really are when a drone is flying around vs. a chest or helmet mount.

 ahahah. Bike settings do a lot, but I like to think that I'm pretty strong at hucking to flat also.

 Man that's incredible! It really shows a better aspect of how crazy those trails you're riding are. I knew that drop on the slab was big, but that was the first time I'd seen a full side aspect... it's huge! Killer riding as always Remy! The drone piloting was also top notch!

 Jeez. I've always loved to watch Remy's footage but seeing him absolutely slay the trails I ride everyday in a way SO different than the way I can ride them is incredibly humbling.

The trailnetwork of squamish is just sooooooo amazing! the work done by the trailbuilders and the sorca is just mindblowing!

 This has to be the best edit so far this year. I think what made me appreciate it even more is that I didn’t have to see Remy tie his shoes, make a coffee, pet his trail dog, check is tire pressure or load his bike on the tailgate of his Tacoma.

 This video is the most impressive thing I have seen in a long time. The speed Remy goes down some of these slabs and how close the drone gets to Remy and the trees is mind blowing. Absolutely top notch.

 So... how does the drone pilot follow Remy with the camera, flying backwards, and know he's not crashing into anything? Are there 2 cameras on it..?

 Pilot has goggles on, the drone transmits First Person View to him. Many drones have targeting so the camera auto points at the subject so the pilot can focus on flying.
