Notice: Before reading this article and appreciating the images, turn the sound on and listen to some Gojira music.

Two characters, one from the music world and one from the biking world.

Each of them living from what they love to do and becoming experts in their field. But passions can be shared, as each one is impressed with what the other has achieved. And these two worlds met last year: Jérôme was attending a Gojira concert in Vancouver, as the band was playing the opening of a Metallica show. The next day, Jérôme contacted Jean-Michel Labadie, the bass player of the Gojira band who is also a big mountain bike addict! They met in his lodge later, stayed in touch, went for some riding together and followed each other’s busy life around the globe.

From this friendship an idea had emerged in Jérôme's mind, a video to share the two worlds.

Jérôme: “I’m a big fan of music and I often ride with some sound in my ears. It could be any kind of music, depending on my mood or the weather. But I have to admit that some music transports me further than other, especially metal bands. Gojira band is one of them: when I am listening to them, my mind escapes in a different world and I feel like I’m riding in another dimension.

A world that will look like what you can see in these pictures, reflecting the power of nature. There is no sadness nor chaos just the expression of strength of mother nature, its power to modify and shape the landscape.

This could happen in the blink of an eye, like a violent volcanic eruption, that burns everything, that throws tons of stones in the air and create wide rivers of lava. Or this could take ages like the drifting of the continent, really tiny movements that constantly modify the world at a pace we can’t see but that is reminded constantly with earthquakes.

Some people may see catastrophe, but it could also be a rebirth, the chance to create something new, stronger and more beautiful.

You’ll see hope, when trees are standing in the middle of an old lava river, colourful flowers growing in an ash pit; it’s also well-known that volcanic grounds deliver fertile soil for agriculture. It’s a world for us riders, where you can ride steep slopes, drifting on thin rolling stones, slalom around grass bubbles or ride through a natural halfpipe.

This world is best represented in my mind at the end of fall, when all the leaves are on the ground and you‘re riding on an orange carpet. This is not the twilight of the riding season but a new era where you have the best vision in the forest, everything seems more open, the air is fresh and wakes up your senses.

You appreciate the moment at dawn or dusk, where the light has a meaning and is changing constantly. Some might say that there is nothing better than the bright light. I would disagree and find my happiness when it’s less neutral and you get the rising sun lightening the trail, when you enter the cloud and feel the chill of the humidity on your skin, when it gets dark and your imagination has to help to see what’s on the trail.

All these things make you feel alive, appreciate the singularity of the moment and the meaning of life. This moment when it starts raining and you feel a bit upset, but just after, there is a ray of light in the darkness which make this moment incredible, mind blowing, and you are stunned by the beauty of the instant.

This is life at its best; don’t try to control everything and be surprised by what the day could offer you. Even if it doesn’t look bright, you may be amazed if you keep seeing hope even in the darkness. Who said you ride only for the fitness or the fun aspect? Riding is also a time to escape from the daily routine, to dream and drift into another world and let your mind create a different reality. This is exactly where music and bike take me.”

Agreed. Needs more hucks into rock gardens too, preferably in sync with the breakdowns

Like it or not, Cannondale is heavy metal now, y'all.
  • + 12
Funny enough this is the kind of quality (photography, synchronization of music and visuals) I've come to expect from Commencal. Good to see Cannondale step up. And always nice to hear some metal Smile .

@vinay: I really wanted to comment that this video was so Meta. Wrong pun though Wink

Sick riding Jerome!!

I had to stop listening to metal while riding (bikes and snowboards), it pushes me to the edge of control or amplitude with sometimes ugly results. Not that into riding with music but when I do it's always reggae. Love smashing out Whistler laps while listening to one of the Marleys.

...constantly reminding myself to ride while listening to metal b/c is pushes me to the edge of control (with sometimes ugly results).

Any recommendations for headphones that stay in when putting on a fullface helmet?

 @Stokedonthis: Sol republic sport relays

Earphones? Try some with the silicone ends that fit inside your ear. Sennheiser's are great, but some Sony's are cheaper. You might find one side will just stop working after a while, or the connection by the plug will get sketchy, and they'll need replacing.

More metal edits please, and more brutal!!! Gojira is easy listening metal. See Rings Of Saturn for true dimension altering noise.

Throw in some Hissing, Fetid, Mizmor, Triumvir Foul, Infernal Coil, Spectral Voice, and we're good to roll (for 'mainstream underground' D metal, anyway). The B & W dead trees were delightful.

Rings of Saturn is definitely a different experience. For a much heavier and raw Gojira (IMO), listen to their first two albums (Terra Incognita and The LInk)
  • + 4
 @n-lagasse: Nile or Necrophagist
  • + 4
 lol Rings of Saturn.

Strapping Young Lad. I love some metal and MTB but I don't think that metal suits MTB videos very well though, not sure why.

 Faceless Burial.
  • + 2
@Will-narayan: I agree. They should all use hardcore punk for the speed. Slayer and black metal are fast enough though.
  • + 1
I'm an In Flames & KSE kinda guy (in their earlier guises).
  • + 2
@Will-narayan: SYL, totally!! ``Heavy as a really heavy thing``: my favourite metal album above all.

@endlessblockades: you very well know the excellent death metal bands! Cheers man!

Funny enough I've heard most of these names though I've never listened to their music. But let me throw in Hate Eternal for some powerful tunes. Sorry, I don't think I've got anything more aggressive in my collection. That said, would be interesting to see what a fitting cycling video would look like.

Gojira is one of the best bands out there, and the mix with mtb is fine as a 30 years old wine

@loizorider Loving the black and white grading decision for this project. That backlit rain shot in the woods was epic. Some cool editing decisions in post, too. Kudos!

Listening to Metal on a Carbon bike, knowing that Gorija are ecologically commited, come on...

Next video please: Riding a steel bike while listening to ``Reinventing the Steel``by Pantera.

Heavy Carbon music needs to be invented!

FINALLY ! A proper article for metal heads \,,/
BTW GOJIRA bassist rides DOWNHILL as well : www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_wcx0CPJA4

Well I love heavy metal and all but it fits more to a DH/Freeride bike or at least outfit. That enduro helmet/glasses combo is more for a generic non copyrighted vlog background music type edit.
  • + 2
I prefer long horror samples and blast beats for sick horror freaks that you get with Mortician. But I can also get behind Gojira.
  • + 5
 Fvck yea metal!
  • + 4
You had me at Gojira. I could listen to that song over and over.
  • + 4
Thank you Jerome for introducing me to Gojira!!!!!!!!!

Heavy and fast. What a great combo. Keep em coming Jerome!

Needs some custom water bottle. The frame looks weird without a bottle.

Sounds like Jerome also rides while partaking in illicit substances
  • + 6
@sosburn did you read the article? Gojira's bassist is the connection to Jerome..
  • + 1
 @nickkk: nope just skimmed
  • + 4
 That was rad
  • + 2
was expecting him to send it over the logs/rocks/walls instead of just whiney tantrums
  • + 1
I think he is riding wrong bike, should have been on less travel/ bad habit as metal is on so plush?
  • + 2
My ears are bleeding and I couldn't be happier about it.
