Video: Jesse Melamed Shows You The Racing Line on Squamish's 'Angry Midget'

May 12, 2020
by Jesse Melamed

I'm back! And this time with a different take on my trail breakdown, I wanted to see how much quicker just riding the racing line would be. I was especially curious because I have ridden this trail (Angry Midget) many times but I have never scoped out lines. I found some new lines and I was surprised at some others, check out the video for the full breakdown of all the key sections and their time differences!

I didn't include the full race-line run for time purposes. I don't watch many YouTube videos over 15 minutes so I don't expect you would either. The full race-line video will be coming!

As always, let me know how I did as well as anything specific you would like me to cover in my next trail breakdown video!

Thanks for watching!

 "Your bike is too big. Your bars are too wide. Gloves are safety gear. You are beautiful with a good personality, and should call me".

Oh wait Jesse is a boy's name too, nevermind.

 I think Jesse is a beautiful not-angry midget with a good personality and should call me Smile

 Lol. Gotta admit the Newfie accent is sexy though. Or is he an Irish expat?
  • 18 1
 I'm 50 percent sure I get it.

 @Six-or-Shore: I think you meant " beautiful not-angry NOT-midget" right? Otherwise I'm not calling!
  • 14 2
 I find the word 'angry' offensive as I have have anger management issues. Can we change the name to 'Visibly Upset Little Person'?
  • 11 1
 But what about the upset people? And the little people? And the visible people?
  • 3 1
 @JesseMelamed: What about if we just remove the last letter and reminisce over the Fort William plague...Angry Midge.

 @carlitouk: That has to work!

 I loved watching this, but I say always taking the fun line is the way to go. Speed be damned.

 Fast is fun and fun is fast!

 @JesseMelamed: This is the only comment that matters.

 Great Vid Jesse! It's so interesting to see the time differences!
  • 4 0
 Super interesting! I was surprised at a few, very cool to do a proper time comparison.
  • 3 0
 Love those vids! Maybe it’s just me but I find it hard to appreciate the differences when the two lines are shown side by side - you’re going to fast for a human eye to keep going back and fort! Personally I prefer be shown one (to have a good look at the main line) followed by the alternative, so you can really spot the difference. Appreciate that it would make the vid longer, but I don’t think anybody here would object to that...
Keep up the great content coming Jesse and Remy, thank goodness Squamish stayed opened to feed the rest of us.

 You are right, it was hard for me to tell the difference when editing, but that's why I had a few of the 3rd person shots in there!

 This is such a rad video. One of my favorite trails in Squamish and one that I always try to better my strava times on. I also coach boardercross in the winter so it's fascinating to compare the differences and similarities in how a rider looks at, decides and executes the fastest line choice. Love it!
  • 1 0
 I bet there are a lot of similarities, except you have to deal with someone else coming in on your line!

 @JesseMelamed: Let's run 4 wide down AM and see what happens!!

 Did trailforks really rename Angry Midget to Angry M.?....Who got offended and complained?
  • 27 3
 I got offended! Haha just kidding, but it's true. Everything is an offense these days.

 Angry Little Person has a nice ring to it, plus ALP is a lovely acronym...Smile
  • 7 5
 Ahahaha yes! They changed the sign too. I photoshopped SORCA's sign post about it to "Angry Social Justice Warrior" and my comment was promptly deleted.

 @kingpine: haha I like it!

 @Grunk: I didn't even notice!

 Wasn't the trail named after Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf? How do you think it makes Hank feel, sitting up there on a particularly puffy cloud, knowing he's no longer a reference point for his namesake trail?

 @SoddenDeath: it's a sad, sad world.

 @JesseMelamed In most videos of you and other RM riders I see the Fox X2 instead of the shock that the bikes are shipped with. Even on the bikes.com website the Instinct BC is shown with an X2 and sold with a DPX2. Do you know why they don`t sell their bikes with the X2? Thanks!
  • 3 0
 That is a question for our product manager! The DPX2 is lighter weight shock for the Instinct while the DHX2 is a heavy duty shock for the Slayer. Currently nothing in between those two, I would think the Altitude should have a Float X2 as well as the Instinct BC, but that adds more weight and more dollars to the MSRP.

 Hey Jesse, what computer & mount do you have? I have edc stem as well and want to mount cpu there but don’t know which mount is best. Yours looks clean. Thanks!
  • 2 0
 It's the Stages Cycling Dash with a headset spacer mount! Very clean.

 Very interesting to watch, makes me curious to pick apart my own local trails. Thanks.

 It is always fun! Take your favourite trail and take a walk down it and see what you see!

 @JesseMelamed: No sh!t eh? District of North Van has closed some parking lots so I feel like Im breaking into the forest to go riding!! At least they (and west van) could do was open the roads up the mountains so we can shuttle again and not do a 60 min up for a 16 min down!! I need ma laps brotha!!
  • 14 0
 @lastminutetech: Why would they allow shuttling? To encourage people from different households to ride close together in the same unnecessarily for more laps? Just pedal dude.

 @lastminutetech: don't take it personally. The government has done pretty poor on the messaging front and a lot of people aren't really aware of how the situation is changing. Much better to just turn the other cheek and be grateful for everyone's sacrifice.

 @friendlyfoe: Thanks bud, appreciated

 “Main line with confidence” Going to start using this term a lot more now! Especially when things gets sketchy Wink
  • 1 0
 Haha yup, I think the vanzacs were the ones I heard it from first.

 Couldn't not think about Pulp Fiction when I read this.

 I do wonder about adding new lines (ie race) to exhisting trails...
  • 1 0
 The only one that was questionable was the second last inside line, but I didn't move anything or go over any raw ground. This is an old trail with a lot of established lines, I was just picking the fastest one.
  • 3 0
 @JesseMelamed: Thanks for the reply Jesse. I do think that we should all be careful to not reroute so we can go faster as it can have detrimental effects on erosion etc. Even if the trail is older. With lots of reroutes the trail turns into dbl track and not what we all love which is single track. People reroute around tricky ot slower bits to the point of dumbing down trails. I have seen it. This is by no means a slight at you. Great work on the videos. Smile

 Another vote for keeping the door closed. Sorry, come again when healthy.

 Agreed!

 Any minute now the cases will be magically down to zero. An angry orange clown told me so. Oh, and drink bleach to stay healthy!

 Main line with confidence, love it

 I believe it comes from your fellow kiwis, the vanzacs.
