Video: Jesse Melamed Shreds Wild Pemberton Trails in 'Sound of Speed'

Dec 30, 2019
by James Smurthwaite

bigquotesJesse Melamed is a name to remember amongst the elite enduro ranks of the Enduro World Series, ecspecially after his first career win on home soil during Crankworx Whistler in 2017. The Rocky Mountain rider has grown up on Whistler trails his whole life, so it's no surprise that Melamed is one of the top 10 enduro mountain bikers in the world.

With Rob Parkin on camera duty, here is Jesse's debut Sound of Speed. Headphones on and enjoy!

2020 Goal: Riding at 98% of the speed of Jesse in this video hahaaaaaa !!! That was totally f*cked Jesse Smile
  • 56 0
I think that's a good goal for your comeback! And then you can work on going 102% of that speed ????
  • 6 0
you need to do it on the city bike as well
  • 5 0
"that is totally f**ked" is the absolute only way to refer what I just saw.
  • 6 0
For the sake of scale for anyone who cares, Jesse has the KOM on Cop Killer with a 6:11 rip. Next closest rider is just over **two minutes** back. And another minute elapses before the third-fastest rider comes through. Granted these are Strava times for those that aren't 'hidden', but it's really impressive nonetheless.

Oh good. For a second then I thought he was leaving Rocky Mountain to an unspecified other team on the best of terms.
  • 4 0
Thought I was the only one phew
  • 3 1
Thought speed might have been leaving team sound.
  • 54 0
Confirmed! Jesse Melamed to keep riding bikes in 2020!
  • 2 2
@fatduke: must be on a pivot Mach then.
  • 51 1
I know this obvious, but Jesse has to be one of the best "on the limit" bike handlers in the world. He is so relaxed in every serious pucker situation and makes it look effortless. One of my favorite riders to watch.
  • 39 0
Thanks for that compliment! I spend a lot of time riding on that edge as it's my favorite place to be!
  • 4 0
I was thinking that trail looked pretty cool until the BTS and I realized just how ragged he got to get those shots.
  • 25 0
That gully crash was gnarly. Wow ouch.
  • 19 0
Tuck and roll worked out well on that one haha
  • 2 0
 @JesseMelamed: Like a pro!
  • 3 1
 @jimeg: shut up meg
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: If that rock wasn't in the way of your bars it looked liked you would've saved it.
  • 1 0
@jimeg: j-i-........ meg. Are u not jimmy meg? Cause u look just like a the kook rolling down viper w a flat tire the other day. His name is jimmy meg. So........
  • 1 0
@jimeg: on an ebike nonethelesss!! I was told if I got an ebike, flat tires wouldn’t matter, I could just keep ridin on the rims and still strava.
  • 20 4
Don’t show me this. I only want to know about which riders are leaving which team for the next five days.
  • 43 0
Yea that's not going to happen here, I'd be an idiot to leave my team.
  • 11 0
I loved everything about this! Very well done from beginning to end. More edits like this would be amazing! Copkiller is gnarly AF. Jesse makes it look like a chill blue trail. So good
  • 5 0
Good thing people can't complain about the pvta dumbing it down!
  • 5 0
Agreed. Unless you've actually ridden that trail it's impossible to really grasp how steep and loose some of those bits are, and how utterly ridiculous it is to contemplate riding it that fast. That gap into rock face has some pretty serious consequences if you blow through the next corner.
  • 11 0
Drifts for days man.......I swear he could ride the whole trail network with a completely seized rear hub.
  • 9 0
It does look like on skidding everywhere but it isn't always intentional. That trail was so loose that it was hard to go that fast and keep the wheels turning going into the corners.
  • 4 0
@JesseMelamed: intentional or not man, you still make switchbacks and scandy flicks on these steep shoots look so easy and natural for you! Very impressive riding man, you've inspired me to work on these techniques this year!
  • 11 0
Jesse is one of the raddest riders out there! stoked on this
  • 3 0
 Thank you!
  • 8 2
He rides SO on the edge even when not racing. Super fun to watch and crazy fast but can't help but think that the winning formula is sometimes about reigning it in a bit and adding in some self preservation to prevent season ending/ disrupting injuries.
  • 37 0
You are right, but when you're filming for RedBull you have to adjust your intent a bit. I wanted this video to be insane so I did what I could to make that happen. No regrets.
  • 4 0
@JesseMelamed: I hear ya on that. Hoping this next EWS season is the one you deserve!
  • 5 0
Oh my, even after watching riding videos almost every day on the internet, Watching Jesse on that trail made me ask myself how that is possible? There is fast and loose riding then there is Jesse a couple levels up. UNREAL!
  • 8 2
@JesseMelamed That was sickdick. Are you seriously mental? I know that trail well... You're an idiot. I mean you're not an idiot but still... you're an idiot.
  • 6 0
"you looked a little bit out of control there"
Jesse: "yeah that's kinda my style"
totally man!! Wink
  • 4 0
 Haha oops
  • 6 1
Can see why he's one of the best enduro riders , but please wear some protection , those elbows, those log piles . Especially with his injury history
  • 6 1
I keep saying I'm going to suck it up and start wearing elbow pads...but it hasn't happened yet
  • 2 0
@JesseMelamed: I'm surprised you didn't smoke your elbow on the "tuck and roll." There are so many comfortable elbow pads out there right now. There's no downside to wearing them.
  • 3 0
@rrolly: In the immortal words of (the immortal) Kelly McGarry..."pads are for pussies and smart people. And I'm neither."
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: what @rrolly said. Winter time is a good time to make them a regular piece of riding kit.
  • 3 0
some crazy lines and moves!! Crash in Cop Killer chute is gnarly, glad you were ok! Jesse you're a Freaking Animal! I wish you a great 2020 season, stay safe and Top step will come
  • 1 0
 Thank you!
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: Yeah - I was like WTF was I watching as you fly down that but then I really liked the behind the scenes footage that was included.

Really good stuff to watch and to also get to know you as well.

Great Tuck-n-Roll BTW.
  • 2 0
@JesseMelamed, pretty sure you just out-shredded Mr. Vanderham’s Sound of Speed. Damn. Thank you for reminding me I’m not worthy of this Instinct BC Edition I’ve got sitting in the rack taunting me. Think I’ll take up cross stitch now.
  • 5 0
looks like an awsome trail ! man that's fast riding
  • 3 0
It's one of my favorites these days
  • 5 0
 Redbull helmet in his future?
  • 5 0
No I'm too old now ????
  • 1 0
seems only fair, they give you a helmet.
  • 3 0
That bike handling skills is something to look up to! My favorite rider at the moment. If he could stay out of injuries 2020, he´ll be a threat in the top 3.
  • 4 0
And that's why you'll never be a pro rider... Difference in speed between a top 10 ews pro and an expert amateur is massive.
  • 4 0
I can go that fast. ONCE.
  • 3 0
@tripleultrasuperboostplusplus: yeah I went skydiving once too
  • 2 0
Thanks for sharing your stoke and skills Jesse! Really looking forward to seeing the RMB team in 2020. You guys play bikes so well lolol! Yeeeew ????????
  • 1 0
love this series, great riding and great drama , the behind the scenes adds more detail to an already amazing video , good luck for 2020 @JesseMelamed
keep it on the edge , but stay in one piece
  • 1 0
Badass collaboration, dude that crash was dope how he rolled it out. Jesse makes the smooth link suspension shine, a favorite rider to watch, I learn a lot just from watching. Loose AF dirt is what I enjoy
  • 1 0
Straight up CRAZY!! Jesse, I have no idea how you're capable of doing what you do on that terrain. I couldn't ride it at any speed, with my super amateur status, haha. Major, major props man!!
  • 1 0
Great format, way more interesting with the whole behind the scenes included. That crash was horrendous to watch, but including it reinforced the commitment required to produce such an edit to the viewer.
  • 3 2
The sound on that video was amazing! The riding was not too shabby too. 29ers still look a little awkward to me under riders less than 6'0" tall - and I own one!
  • 6 0
It's because we got the real trail noise from a microphone strapped to the bike!
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed: Sooo cool and very effective. Keep shredding!
  • 1 0
Sick lines!! Thanks for shredding and keeping us all moving forward. What helmet are you sporting in the video? All the best for 2020!
  • 2 0
 A disguised Troy Lee Stages
  • 1 0
I'd say that was some of the more well planned shoots all things considered! big gear, big steep mountain & more than just a few amazing spots to film!
  • 2 0
I aspire to be you @jessemelamed
fast as f*ck and some of the best trail-riding style in the game
best of luck in 2020!!
  • 1 0
@jesseMelamed Great shredding. I have a scar on my pinky from that chute's left wall from around 2001. Still taking people out!
  • 1 0
Jesse, you`re always carrying such a dose of sympathy on your face, it`s such a pleasure to see you. I wish you an excellent season. Cheers!!!
  • 2 0
8:20 - best line of the video
  • 1 0
 The smoothest
  • 2 1
I appreciate a pro wearing a full face in videos. Too many nerds running around hucking stuff in half shells
  • 1 1
 @remymetailler: not worried about proooooo
  • 1 0
Jesse you are on hell of a wild man! Such a rad edit. All the best for the next EWS Season!!
  • 2 0
It can't be that warm and dry in Pemberton right now. Summer filming.
  • 1 0
@JesseMelamed Instinct or Instinct BC? Whats your go to for a trail like that?
  • 3 1
You'll snap an axle riding like that...
  • 1 0
I’m 2min back. Thanks for sharing now I know how buck gnar to go just to catch you Jesse! Haha your a madman????????????
  • 2 0
Sound of speed or sound of skids? Either way that was bonkers!
  • 1 0
I would just be able to ride down these trails. F$:&k the speed - that is secondary.
  • 1 0
Super good! Fast, loose, tight....all the things! That crash looked dramatic. Glad you walked away from that Smile
  • 2 0
All those poor tree trunks covered in dust Smile
  • 1 0
Sick riding right on the limit. Dope. Does anybody knows what kind of helmet is he wearing on the video? Is it a TLD Stage?
  • 1 0
 @JesseMelamed

Are you seriously running an Aggessai with cushcore? Straight DH setup. I bet it smashes.
  • 1 0
 I meant Assegai. I need a coffee.

Those things only come in DH and DD casing if you want the soft compound. With CC, that's a 1.5+ kg setup LOL
  • 1 0
@jlf1200: Yup! It does smash and I love it!
  • 2 0
 7.25 mark. holy cow!
  • 1 0
I always wonder how much these dudes are crashing...when youre at the limit so much its surprising they don't get hurt more often
  • 2 0
@MikeyMT: that was the only one! And like I said, I was making that section a lot harder than it already was so I had it coming.
  • 1 0
Lucky his left shoulder hit dirt.
  • 1 0
The face in the rock to his right at 7:40 after he crashes.
  • 1 0
sweet jesus how do i get that fast in steep corners?! just insane
  • 1 0
Damn. Steep. Loose. Ouch, bro. Love the front wheel tap at 1:00.
  • 1 0
Jesse you are a total badass!
  • 1 0
Makin the 29r dance baby! Good luck for the new season man, yeeeeeew
  • 1 0
What hubs are you running? They sound sweet.
  • 1 0
 So sick!
  • 1 0
 Shralped it bro.
  • 1 0
 Wow!!!
  • 1 0
 What helmet is that?
  • 1 0
Troy Lee Stages with custom paint.
  • 1 0
 That.was.awesome.
  • 1 0
 H FS fvbn b n n
  • 1 4
Still looks like a skid fest
  • 9 0
That's what people say about your undies. Razz
  • 2 0
