Video: Kamikaze Bike Games are Coming

by Pinkbike Staff

The Kamikaze Bike Games is back for 2014! New for this year is a cyclocross race and a great new XC course. The Speed & Style is shaping up to be a crowd favorite with superstars such as Cam Zink, Greg Watts, Kirt Vories and many more!

It was no doubt that it was dusty and loose in Mammoth.

PRO GRT DOWNHILL

The builders at Mammoth Mountain Bike Park manipulated Mother Nature’s curves in 2001 to build Bullet DH for the Grundig World Cup. With big hits, bigger drops, and super technical sections, racers are required to bring their A-game and a lot of travel. Pros chasing USA Cycling points will let it all hang out on this supergnar course. And to make it even more interesting, the trail is going to receive a total facelift this summer!

THE KAMIKAZE
Known as the fastest downhill in the world, racers on the 3.4 mile course can hit 60+ MPH! The fastest of the fearless clock times that are less than four minutes! As historically significant as it is speedy, riding Kamikaze is like playing baseball at Dodger Stadium: generations of greats have transcended their limits (and slid in the dirt) here! Lacking huge drops, it’s also the ideal course for newbies to dip their SPD-clad toes into the downhill, err, water. Come on in, the pumice is fine!

Brian Lopes is on a mission.

LEGENDS OF THE KAMIKAZE
Kamikaze Bike Games has partnered with Troy Lee Designs to bring 40 downhilling legends back to Mammoth including Brian Lopes, Troy Lee, Eric Carter, Leigh Donovan and many many more.

CROSS COUNTRY
Competitors will be treated to one of the most innovative courses Mammoth has ever created. With 1500’ of climbing per 13 mile loop there’s something for everyone on this grueling tour of some of the best single track Mammoth has to offer. This course will test every aspect of your cross country cycling skills and when the exhaustion wears off, we’re sure you’ll agree with us that this is about as much fun as you can have on a bicycle.

Mikey had some speed on course but T-Mac was able to get him with style.

DUAL SLALOM
Mountain bike trivia: when and where was the first MTB dual slalom? Mammoth Mountain! The brainchild of the hardcore cyclist, skier, and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame member, Bill Cockroft, who believed snow lovers shouldn’t have all the slalom fun. The first race was dubbed the Dual Challenge and it went down in 1986. The name was changed to Dual Slalom in 1987 and the rest is history. Spectator tip: don't miss the finals on Saturday. This will be a spectator highlight of the weekend!

COLDCOCK SPEED & STYLE + BEST TRICK
Speed & Style is back for 2014! It's a unique blend of Dual Slalom and Slopestyle integrated into the Dual slalom course. Bracketed head to head timed racing action with an added aspect of time deductions based on the amplitude of the tricks thrown in. 3 stunt features will earn you a time deduction out of a possible 3 seconds. The harder the trick, the more time off your run, but keep in mind, your opponent will be hitting the berms and jumps hard to try to get the crown of KBG Speed & Style champ.

Joe Lawwill had some bike trouble but still cranked it out in Stage 3.

ENDURO
2014 brings back the Enduro with a new course featuring an additional timed stage. This year’s course is the ultimate tour of Mammoth Mountain covering every aspect of our trails.

SHIMANO KIDS' RACES
Because your kids also feel the need for speed! These races will take place at Canyon Lodge on Saturday and Sunday. Registration will be onsite only and there will be three age groups: 6 and under, 7-9, and 9 and Over. Sure to be fun for competitors and spectators, even Woolly will be on the scene: he’ll be at the finish line waving the checkered flag! Each kid will receive a cool race plate and medal for participating.

Keep an eye on Pinkbike for daily updates from the Kamikaze Mountain Bike Games!

Awesome race! would love to see the legends race, pretty amazing seeing the old footage of the guys and girls running canti brakes and 60 tooth chainrings. Going to be dusty!
  • 3 0
I love the history of this race ! Does anyone know if amateurs can enter it ? Would make a great trip next year
  • 3 0
Yes, amateur racers can enter. The Cat 3, Cat 2, and Cat 1 classifications equate to the beginner, intermediate, and expert level amateur categories. The Legends Of The Kamikaze class is a special invite only race for the old school pros, and the Speed & Style is pro only (as far as I know), but any other event is available to amateur racers. Check out the website www.kamikazebikegames.com , and you can see what's what about all the events.

That thing looks like a heck of a good time! The things I would give just to spectate the event...

It's too bad that every year they nerf Bullet a little bit more. I wish they would stop doing that.
  • 5 2
hahaha whats a nerf Bullet? i am gona have to use that one sometime
  • 6 5
Bullet = the trail mentioned in this article, a noun, the direct object in this sentence
nerf= to make easier, a verb, the action that is being performed upon the direct object in this sentence.
  • 10 0
ahh i see. i guess i am just a East Coast square then, shame me all you want for not knowing your cool lingo.
  • 1 0
How are they "nerfing" bullet??? If you're referring to the pavers, those are pretty much essential if you don't want to lose all of your speed in 6" of sandy dust on every corner.
  • 1 0
I'm not talking about the pavers, those are obviously necessary as the trail degrades naturally over time. I'm talking mostly about the main rock garden. Have you been riding it for very long (I mean in terms of year to year). Each year they fill it in with a few more rocks making it easier and easier. Before the entrance was very challenging, now the first half of the rock garden is a yawn fest. It's very disappointing.
  • 1 0
Top rock garden used to be a crap shoot. That was usually lost
wit hurt wrists and we had 15" bb.

Adolf Hitler loves this Game's official flag.
  • 1 0
I love it when they use gravity pirate riders

Last chance for the handsome pants. Who invents titles like that?
  • 1 0
like that rear hub sound !
  • 1 0
What's the mesh stuff they cover the berms with?
  • 1 0
Paver stones. I don't particularly like them, but without them the berms would blow away with a slightly strong breeze.

I was fortunate enough to go to the dual slalom and "speed & style" event last year. It was mind blowing to see how fast the DS guys were. The speed & style event was changed to just a big air-trick comp, which was amazing to watch as well.

This year I'll be in Yosemite for the weekend, hopefully I'll feel as rad as these guys actually are!

Ahh ,thanks,i've never seen so much dry trail
  • 1 0
Mammoth is very challenging! Good luck all
  • 3 3
This course looks really funny but it looks rockier then the Rockies.
