Video: Kate Courtney Discusses her Olympic Dreams Being on Hold

May 28, 2020
by SCOTT Sports

In spring 2020, as rumors of an eventual postponement of the Olympics to 2021 loomed, athletes were left in limbo. What do you do when your season is put in question and they reschedule the most important goal you have been working towards for more than four years? You go back to work. At least for Kate Courtney of the Scott-SRAM racing team. Her dreams may be on hold, but her determination and dedication to be the best are not.

"If you ask me, do I believe I will stand on the Olympic start-line, the answer is without a doubt: Yes."
- Kate Courtney, Scott- SRAM Racing

I appreciate that even at the highest level you still might end up on a stationary next to a washer and dryer with your screen on a cardboard box

Actually she has quite a few KOMs also on some highly traveled segments. So ya, she ain’t slow homie.

What? How did you make a wonderful story about an amazing athlete your own stupid political rant?

Go Kate!
  • 1 3
@excavator666: don’t you find it incredible how much propping is going on under this article? Can someone please explain me why did I get so many props for “WTf is wrong with you” Comment? I am quite appalled with how low life what kind of piece of social crap one has to be to come on here and start firing props just because it’s an article about a woman in racing? It’s as if white knights came here to have a perverse delight of hunting for misogynists. Honesty, Cannot imagine anything lower than this. To boost your ego by hunting for people who are socially unacceptable to signal belonging to higher, better form of society. It is the ultimate form of channeling inner hatred. Not only these people try to hide how shitty their are inside, they want to turn it around and capitalize on it.
  • 1 2
@WAKIdesigns: Yep, but crazy for you in particular. I look at your props in different comments sections and it's like people track you around the site just to downvote you.

Always good to have a different opinion around here man.

Once again, its reassuring to see that making gold doesn't come from tech, a lab or money. Its hours and hours of beating at your craft, perfecting everything you do and never giving up.
  • 54 8
While I would like to believe this, coming from a family of means that allows you to not need a source of income outside of cycling gives a monumental advantage over someone else whose well-being has no safety net. Having competed in a lot of cross-country back in the day, it was very evident that your resources are a massive factor in your odds of being successful.

@dancingwhale: You must be very disappointed with your parents. The world is full of incredibly talented hard working athletes who have limited resources. Get over it.
  • 20 2
@Proflex1: I'm extremely proud of my background and family. I'm simply making observations about the demographics in our sport, and the facts are that most families in any given society will be unable to provide the buckets of cash to help a child chase dreams like many successful racers in any sport do. (auto racing, moto, etc)
  • 3 2
It's mostly just genetics and luck. The person who gets gold hasn't worked any harder than the person who gets silver.
  • 4 0
@notsofastoverfifty: That's why the mental component is so strong. "Luck" often comes down to ones reaction to circumstance. Whether it is or is not genetics, people often use genetics as an excuse to justify their perception of their own effort. It's also not as simple as working hard, ever. Working hard is much easier than the discipline of following an intelligent plan.
  • 6 0
@dancingwhale: and her family has some serious means.
  • 5 3
@dancingwhale: you just mentioned Auto moto well those do not cost nearly the same as a bike to build race and maintain. Kate has a drive money can not buy she has upped the competition in the women's field and won it all her first year. I feel sorry for people that think it takes more money than determination. You say you have competed in the past. Just ask yourself if you treated it like a second job. Or the number one ! Most people chose to work harder on there job than there sport. Kate has and is changing the world of cross country. Like Aaron Gwen has for DH. She has shown the world if they want to beat her they have to train harder. She has brought off bike training to a whole new level never seen in the woman's field until recently. Like Aaron did. Let me tell you when you train like she does you start to believe you are the best and deserve to be on top. When you dont you can never trick your subconcious mind to believe what is not true. Aaron went to work on legen john Tomac ranch for food and training and came back a contender in the world. His family has little money, his heart and desire did it for him. I could mention so many top mtb racers that family has no money and given no support. Chloe Woodruff is another. And she changed everything because of Kate like the whole field did.

For real, would totally go for a ride with her and bring along some food and such for a picnic watching the sun go down. Due to being stopped for so long our calves cool down and start to feel sore. We kinda regret stopping for so long because now we need to warm up again, but we had fun talking about random stuff, and it's downhill all the to town anyway so it's OK. Then we go our separate ways. Next Wednesday I would send her a some memes and schedule another bike trip for the coming weekend.

@JacobyDH: self quarantine? They say the moment you get symptoms, you are well into actual spreading period, and you stop being a spreader already before symptoms subside. Meaning, most spreading is done in asymptomatic phase. However more and more folks get it in our office in longer intervals so it cannot be this contagious. If it were as contagious as some say, everyone in our office would get it after my case. Unless.. 90% of people go through it with zero symptoms

The slowest man DNS, so any woman could do that. The next 5 slowest men DNFed so according to some, anybody could also do that. Slowest finisher was 5 laps back covering 4 laps in a blistering one hour 26 minutes, assuming he finished with the leaders. Pauline Ferrand Prevot did 7 laps on the same course in one hour 18 minutes. If you've never stood at the tape on a WC XC course you will never get how fast even the slowest of these people are much less the quickest. To make any sort of negative comment about elite athletes, men or women participating in the sport you enjoy yourself is beyond comprehension. Again, I urge any of you to go ride the XC course @ Snowshoe and if you even make it around one lap, see how long it takes you and picture doing it 7 times.
  • 12 8
What a great ambassador not only for XC mountain biking but the sport as a whole. Kate truly has a psychologist's mindset and can turn a negative situation into fuel and motivation for the future. Very humble and professional, more Kate Courtney, please!
  • 8 6
For all you who think the women aren't fast and talented go try to top the time of the slowest one on the WC course @ Snowshoe and see how you stack up.

The slowest were two DNF's. Safe to say, anyone could finish faster than that.

The slowest finisher was 5 laps back averaging a blistering 7 mph! LMAO!

So much for "women's equality!"
