by James Smurthwaite

Words: Nukeproof

After setting the Team rumour mill alight over the past few months and toying with the question “what’s Katy doing?” It’s time to break cover. She lit the internet up with her latest edit on her YouTube Channel with a refreshingly honest talk on the search for the perfect ride. You can watch the latest episode of Katy’s new series “Keeping up With Katy” above.

Katy has set up her new team; Moxie XI and Nukeproof are super proud to be part of her new adventure. She will be racing her new Nukeproof Giga 297 (Size Small) at all the Enduro World Series rounds as well as some select other races. Her Giga is going to be one of the trickiest out there with fellow sponsors; SRAM, Rockshox, Zipp & Crankbrothers with Troy Lee Designs supplying protection and apparel. Huge thanks to her family too.

Because of the story sram and nukeproof already get the return of investment Smile

Props to KATY! that was not easy to admit such desperation, it was a massive risk for humiliation especially on platforms as critical as PB but what a fantastic outcome and such a nice story that might but probably might not have happened behind closed doors. I feel privileged to have witnessed this moment,it fills me with hope and joy. Thank you for exposing yourself like this Katy! This really makes my day. All the best for MOXIE XI

She's an awesome athlete (and these videos are amazing too), we're stoked to have her on a Nukeproof. Going to be a rad season.
  • 5 0
Let bit disappointed that Tennent’s, Irn Bru and Tunnock’s weren’t involved if I’m honest.

@Nukeproofinternational: This sealed the deal, and I'll be ordering a Giga once available.
  • 2 0
@Nukeproofinternational: my next bike will definitely be the reactor. Please keep on supporting great riders.

She did it all for the Nukee

it has been said, not by me, that the new Nukeproof looks like an Ali Express Santa Cruz

This season I will be riding on Lapierre. Just like last season. Probably next season too.

No one knows who you are though.

@extratalldirtrider: They can probably identify a joke though.

If I could choose any sponsor it would be Nukeproof. I would also like Corona, Aberlour, Adidas, Land Rover, British Airways and the Hawaiian Tourism Bureau. I know I'm being picky. Just Nukeproof would do.
  • 12 0
change Corona for Leffe "brune" and I would be on your team
  • 3 0
@vhdh666: change to (or add) Leffe Triple and I'm gladly on board as the third team member
  • 3 0
Agree, Great frames, great components, apparently the latest horizon wheels are good too and they have clothing.
  • 1 0
 Aberlour for the win.
  • 1 0
I'd be happy to swap Aberlour (although I do like the A'Bunadh) for Laphroaig and just leave it at that...
  • 2 0
@Niseach1: swap Aberlour for Laphroaig and Leffe brune and Leffe triple and Land Rover and Lamborghini and..... lt me go back to work now ....
  • 5 0
Why would you need land rover? You need something to tow with the nukeproof?

Crap sorry, forgot this wasn't a 4x4 forum.

@anybodyseengeorge: if I was sponsored by Land Rover I wouldn’t need to worry about the costly repair bills.

Holy f*ck, when you told the apart about your grandparents helping you out I just started tearing up from memories of my own grandpa.. I could always count on him for anything and I still miss him so much. It's great to see you keeping on with the dream, that shows a lot of character and any brand would be lucky to have you as a rider. On another note, go hug your grandparents kids, unfortunately we don't get much time with them.
  • 29 0
Can you ever feel the heart and soul she is putting into the sport - #Imafan.
  • 26 1
Congratulations Katy, I'm sure you'll do well on Nukeproof. They seem to look after their riders and you also get to ride with Sam Hill too
  • 11 0
Not the same team as Sam Hill unfortunately, but would be good if she got some of the support
  • 17 0
Finally, Nukeproof has a decent enduro racer. But seriously, congrats to Katy.

This is a brilliant outcome for Katie Winton, but it really troubles me that one of the best EWS riders in the World found herself in this position.

People are quite rightly praising the brands that have backed Katie, but let’s not lose sight of the ones, who thought it was fine to drop a top 5 EWS athlete for no other reason than her being a woman.

An athlete shouldn’t have to drive herself to the point of nervous breakdown to secure a contract and protect the wages of her peers. Katie’s story shows us there’s something deeply wrong with the bike industry when it comes to female athletes. This is an opportunity to press for change and equality in our sport and it’s up to all of us who love riding bikes to seize it.
  • 4 6
Great - you're going to chip in for sponsorships then?
  • 6 1
@twopoint6khz: I would if I could, but I can’t ,so I’ll just choose where I spend my money wisely and take any opportunity I can do be a decent ally for all women riders in general. Makes you feel much better than snarky comments on the internet
  • 5 2
Top 5 in a field that has had one competitive championship contender for the past four years isn’t a great accolade. Good, not great.
No one owes anyone a living.
  • 1 0
I think the biggest issue was that budgets are finite and they had to find the cash to keep Reese as it was looking like he would be hunting for a deal elsewhere at the end of last season. And then he won the Worlds and ruined that plan!
  • 20 7
So happy for Katy! Trek better be ready to lose the support of female riders after dropping Katy and picking up some big name male downhill riders. I am actively recommending my female friends against buying Trek bikes. Their lack of support for their female riders does not go unnoticed.
  • 9 1
 Go Katy!
G&GPA the best sponsors ever!
We’re all routing for ya!
Keep pumping out your honest and heartfelt content, it’s allot more relevant than most out there!
God speed!

very well said, thanks: Keep pumping out your honest and heartfelt content, it’s allot more relevant than most out there!

Excellent. Well done, much deserved! Nukeproof, SRAM and TLD is a fantastic selection. Well done to everyone. Lovely grandparents too.
  • 3 0
It's awesome to see Katy on a new ride, although how can it be fair for Trek to loose the support of female riders when they recently signed Vali Holl and Jolanda Neff and also support Evie Richards, Hattie Harnden, Casey Brown etc..
  • 3 0
Oh dear what a relief! For months I've been hoping that Katie can find (or create) a team – just can't imagine a rider of that caliber missing an EWS season. Especially knowing that she did put in the legwork to find a deal/team. Massive props to all the sponsors supporting her. Especially stoked on her riding a Nukeproof, those bikes look amazing this year. Now, where's that joint edit with Remy Metailler?! :-)

2021 - The time when there are millionaire male riders with massive deals who have never raced, yet one of the best female riders in the world are struggling to get a ride and ass she says by taking something lower than she is worth would be devaluing the whole female side of the sport. Very sad!
  • 2 0
 Who? Legit curiosity here
  • 1 0
@Lorieng: I think the only millionaire riders are millionaires from YouTube. No bike company is paying a million dollars to a rider for riding. No way!

Great News Katy . . . I did spot you riding a Nukeproof a couple of weeks back on the local trails . . . and was hoping this was your new sponsor!

 Nigel is such a Legend

Congratulations! Nuke proof will serve you well. And, I do think that EWS podcast was right, this whole debacle could do you well in the long run. These video series are getting you more exposure and improving your brand. It may be a tough year but hopefully the lessons from it will serve you well for the rest of your life. I look forward to showing your videos to my son as a way to teach mental toughness. Thanks for sharing your struggle as your vulnerability shows your strength.

Why are we not crowdsourcing at least part of her race season? I would happily kick in some dollars just so she can focus a little more on her racing and focus less on making ends meet. Can someone setup a GoFundMe for her so we can make this happen?

As a side note, I have no problem with Trek dropping a racer. Companies have to make these decisions all the time and it is part of the business. I have. BIG problem with the way they did it so late in the season which effectively kept her from finding another ride since budgets had been allocated.

 Gratz ! Well deserved

Glad to see a Nukeproof Sponsorship!! I used to have the Nukeproof Scout 27.5 Hardtail bike. Pretty nice brand. It will be dope riding with Sam Hill
  • 4 0
Not sure she will ride with Sam Hill because he's in Chain Reaction Cycles team.
  • 1 0
@Edendino: I thought they were sponsorships!! That stinks. Hopefully they will do some sort of collab
  • 4 0
YES ! Thank you Nukeproof , you guys won't regret it
  • 5 2
I think riding Nukeproof is more special than riding Trek even if she gets paid less now

What a relief !! Congratulations Katy . This is going to be great.!!!! And thank you for shedding light on the process and struggles pro riders go through.

Bike are so cute in size S

I wish she has great results in order to be able to raise her middle finger to all her previous sponsors.

When are these yellow Wild Enduro tires gonna be released? Doesn't look like the casing was made stronger since Katy is running a DH22 in the rear though...
  • 1 0
cyclingindustry.news/michelin-launch-new-wild-enduro-racing-line-tyre-range very soft launch, probably because availability is super low on the ground
  • 1 0
@riftzonexc8: interesting, looks like they're called the "Racing Line" version. Michelin gives them 3/3 stars for "robustness" vs the regular Wild Enduro got 2/3 stars. The Racing Line version also weighs 1350g which is a little heavier than a maxxis double down.
  • 1 0
Only available in 29x2.4 so far, so need to go for something else in the rear to suit the mullet.
  • 1 0
@swenzowski: yeah, main difference is folding bead on these racelime enduros compared to the DH tyres, so they're a lot lighter!
  • 1 0
@riftzonexc8: What? The Raceline Wild Enduros are heavier than the regular Wild Enduro, not lighter. Well lighter than DH tires but that should be a given for any tire that's marketed as "enduro."
  • 1 0
@riftzonexc8: ah my mistake, you were comparing them to the DH, not the original wild enduro
  • 2 0
@melonhead1145: do you know whether they're running a 290 with small rear wheel, or 275 with 29er fork and front wheel?
  • 1 0
Looks like a 275 with a 160 or 170 29er fork but I’m holding out hope for a mullet link! Love my Giga 290, no problem with maneuverability, but after riding the new Status I’m itching to try the oh so trendy mullet setup on my daily driver.

Good work Katy, family and Mr. Page on keeping the dream alive!!
  • 2 0
Regigulous it was so hard for her to find sponsors
  • 1 0
So very very cool! Congratulations!! Psyched to also be running sram, great folks.
  • 1 0
Are the nukeproof riders gonna use the giga or mega for ews? Seems like a lot of them are riding gigas.
  • 1 0
Man, this was an amazing journey to watch and I'm so glad that it ended happily. Katy, go and crush it, 2021 is yours!
  • 1 0
That video is so good, keep the rawness and shred this season. What a rockstar.
  • 1 0
This is a huge story! Well done Katy, keep the momentum and rock the year!
  • 2 0
 Nukeproof Giga.... 297?
  • 2 0
Mullet set up as provided by Nukeproof on the Dissent series 275 - 297 - 290 wheelsize, but no official release of the Giga into 297 combo.
  • 1 0
@Variable-Visual: Everyone is releasing mullet DH bikes, but no mullet enduro bikes. I thought the new Mega would be released with a mullet option since Elliot Heap is running mullet on all his bikes
  • 2 0
@melonhead1145: you can find @LAST-BIKECOMPANY with the mullet option linkage on their range, @konaworld process X got also a chip to fit 27.5 wheel in the back, @PROPAIN-Bicycles offers the new spindrift as a mullet, it only wait to get the Tyee with the same combo, it's way more offered in E-bike enduro market, but it will come i guess in the future. From my side mullet set-up is really cool to ride as a enduro/freeride bike keeping short chainstay and fast handling in corner and jib in bike park. I'm agree some other brands should consider offering a mullet bike or a chip/link to swap the 29 wheel and get the 27.5, but in this case chainstay is often a bit long. Some alternatives does exist, but it's not so easy to find. Our last hope is wait from @CascadeComponents to create some linkage to mod some 29 to Mullet combo, and give a fresh look to our existing 29 bikes.

You also have the @Specialized Status 2020 in mullet combo, a bike they won't display on the website, only in shops.
  • 1 0
@Variable-Visual: Specialized Stumpjumper Evo ltd is mullet as well..
And Forbidden druid has a mullet link.
