Join us on a ride through Kona's 27-year long history making trail ripping mountain bikes. Together again, for the first time (crazy, right?), an original 1988 Kona Cinder Cone shares the trail with its 2014 offspring. Hop on a true mountain bike original and Kona's longest running bike model and blast through a quarter century of fun.

Kona in Maui November 2013

While shooting the video, Kona's enduro shredder, Matt Slaven couldn't help but love riding a bike that was basically made the year he was born. Photo: Sterling Lorence

He also had a blast on the new Cinder, which features 27.5 wheels, Scandium 69 frame and sweet spec. Photo: Sterling Lorence

Here she be, our first ever mountain bike, and today, our longest running model. Splatter paint, Cromoly, Suntour shifting...beauty.

Around the Banyan tree we go. Wasn't easy finding the retro Lycra, even harder to get Slaven to wear it. Photo: Sterling Lorence

I knew there was something odd about these photo's, but the non racist in me couldn't figure out what. Good spot Warnerja27!

20 year old lycra tights have "lycra memory". Meaning Slaven's nuts are probably red, swollen, and blistering as we speak. Good luck with the recovery and thanks for the memories!
  • + 19
That's hilarious! He used an "under chamois" for protection. But we think the "memory" leaked through...

back them I had an explosive....but I still have that purple jersey in storage somewhere:-)

im just glad to see slaven riding again after he was shot in SC last year!

Be nice to see them do this with a few other models as well.

Could of swore that was the 89 model but I know now I'm wrong lol, I had the yellow lava dome with paint splatter. Back then they looked uber modern with slanting top tubes etc, I still remember my dads gutted face when he was handing over 430 GbP FOR A PUSHBIKE

I still have my 1994 Cinder Cone. An incredible bike that I will never sell.
  • + 1
I still have in the back of the shed - 99 NuNu 93 Kilauea

Maybe if my parents had been willing to shell out $400 for a push bike back then I would have got into MTBing earlier. My 1988 Steel Repco sucked. Coming from a 1983 Supergoose BMX it was super heavy. It was too big for me and I washed out the front wheel on some honkey nuts the first week on it and tacoed the front wheel. Threw it in the garage and rode my BMX with no seat for a while in protest then just gave up riding till I lost my licence in my late 20's.

The old model just looked so much more fun to ride. And the shoes.....sik

 Slip-on Vans, FTW!

Love the Kona videos keep them coming!!!!!!!

Funny how a 20 year old model with flashy advertising actually looks fun and totally capable. I feel pretty sheepish now with my brand new 27.5...
  • + 1
I'll give you "looks" but not "capable"... I had a Fire Mountain from the next year. Frames and handling have drastically improved, even on a hard tail.

Awesome video! Makes me even more stoked about the 1991 Cinder Cone I'm building up at the moment (only have to lace the rear wheel when I have time for it and it's ready Smile ).

Also really liking my '05 Hoss Dee-Lux. There's something about old Kona's that makes my heart beat a little bit faster. Soon I'll start my search for a 2004 Coiler frame, because that was my dream bikes when I started riding 10 years ago. But at the age of 13 it was way outside my budget.

 BRING BACK THAT PAINT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And please do this for every other bike. Loving all the old school stuff on PB lately Smile

 I remember Kona,s first Stinky.............................
  • + 2
i had a '92 purple/blue lava dome w/project one fork. always lusted after an explosif or a hot back then. graduated to a brodie catalyst the next year!
  • + 1
I had an Explosif from that time. It was dark red, Nivachrome steel tubing with an 8-sided down tube. One of my favourite bikes ever. It's the only bike I ever really regretted selling.
  • + 2
Rockin a pair of Spicoli's, nice! "Tasty waves, cool buz and I'm fine"-J. Spicoli
  • + 3
OK, but why i "need to buy" the newest one? Wink
  • + 2
Project 2 fork, best rigid mtb fork ever made...fact
  • + 1
Seen Slaven race plenty of cross races. He's not afraid of a little lycra when the time is right!
  • + 1
Honestly, if all of the adverts look like this one it'd make me watch the TV again... Props to Kona for that one!
  • + 3
 the older was faster...
  • + 2
 No..it was funner!
  • + 1
My first hardtail was a cinder cone. 2001 I think. Used it for everything; dirt jumping, downhill, XC. Ace little frame.
  • + 1
YES "Cinder cone all the way bro!!" shakkahhhhhhh
  • + 1
 Hhahah both bikes were rocking
  • + 1
I had a red GT karakoram with paint splatter. 400 quid for a pushbike!
  • + 1
I had a brown Centurion with orange splatter. My first MTB.
  • + 1
Which one is the current bike?
  • + 1
I miss my Fire Mountain! It was quite a step up from The Bushwacker!
  • + 1
The Khaki Green Cinder with SunTour ruled!
  • + 1
I had one of those too. Replaced the push push with suntour thumbies within a month as the internal gears exploded. I miss those grease-guard hubs Frown

How did they get Ron Burgundy to do the voice over?!?!
  • + 1
Sounds like Steve Patterson from CBC's the Debators. Very funny guy. My fellow Canucks may be able to verify.
  • + 1
My favorite part was definitely the Vans Authentic checkered slip-ons
