Video: Finding Hidden Trail Treasure in the Lost Sierra

Lost & Found // Hidden Treasure in the Lost Sierra

Trails inevitably come and go, but rarely are they lost forever. In California’s Northern Sierra Nevada, between Downieville and Sierra City, the area’s mining history contributed to a network of trails that faded away with the Gold Rush. But now, recreation has begun their resurrection, contributing to the local small-town economies and preserving the area’s rich history. Professional mountain biker Eric Porter and Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship’s trail whisperer Kurt Gensheimer spent a week in the Lost Sierra this past fall, riding forgotten trails and finding a different kind of wealth than the area is known for.

SMH, unless the trail is covered in down tree and overgrown, it's far from lost or forgotten. Even then, there's likely some old guy that'll hike it every other Tuesday.

Learn how to front brake and tell us how the SBTS keeps trails like the ones filmed in such good condition.

so awesome...love finding old trails in these mountains...a couple run into forest service trails and I always feel bad coming to a road and seeing the markers, but I am exploring and sometimes these trails run into each other. Fun for sure, watch out though, if they're not traveled much by humans they become highways for game and predators!

Church indeed ma man! I love hunting for trails, known, unknown and what could be. I do it old school to by pouring over maps, word of mouth and exploring. Someday I plan on getting a GPS; I imagine I would save some time an energy. It's sort of a fine line between nothing ventured, nothing gained and curiosity killed the cat.

If those trails were truly lost and forgotten since the gold rush they would be gone completely, overgrown, covered with fallen logs etc. Really cool though that they are still accessible and a miracle they are immediately rideable after their second discovery.

My wife and I spent part of last fall exploring the Lost Sierra. Weather was incredible and we rode some of those trails in the Vid. Very cool place, sorry can't say where we went, just followed our noses.....

This takes me back to shredding trails in the 90's. Un-sanitized dirt but back then we had around 3 -4 inches less travel on our bikes. All about pick a line and commit with a good deal of momentum. Great video!

True adventure still exists. Almost wish they just wouldn’t make a video to keep it that way. Almost.
