Video: Mark Wallace Training on his Enduro and Downhill Bike on Vancouver Island

Feb 18, 2020
by James Smurthwaite

bigquotesEpisode 3 of Between the Races features Mark 'Shark' Wallace, the silent assassin hailing from British Columbia. The softly-spoken Canadian has always had a scary amount of confidence both on and off the bike, as well as being one of the nicest guys in DH. His performance on the race track is a true testament to his raw natural talent and growing up with a trail park in his back garden helped to hone his skills from a young age. The hard-working rider tunes his bikes as hard as his training routine and he continues to go as fast as possible at his local mountain, Prevost, BC.Monster Energy

With that childrens helmet!!! I wouldn't even do it with a parachute on my back.

Personally, I think jumping over entire features is insulting to the builders...I mean, thats why I always use the features as intended, and has nothing to do with me sucking at bikes. Srsly, banger of a move and I'm hoping Mark has a fantastic 2020 season!

@jackalope: I am pretty sure Mark actually built that stunt, so you will have to get him to apologize to himself!

Most builders design features for all skill sets in mind, for a said trail. If they don’t want someone to gap a part of their feature, they won’t give it a lip for pros to launch off. @jackalope:

That jump was definitely not designed to be jumped like that. Lol.

Mark also did the pre-hop on his Spartan years ago, it was gnarly then and its gnarly now!

I stopped the video just after 1:26 in order to comment about that gap, and it seems that everybody is talking about that already.

Imagine not fully clearing it and having your rear touch the ending.

@jackalope: As one of the people who built Loam Line, I can assure you we never built it with the intention of anyone being able to gap that. In-fact when we were in the middle of building that ramp we were joking about someone even trying it. Low and behold a few months after we finished the trail Mark was filmed hitting it on his Spartan with a half-shell and no knee pads on. I can assure you if you see this pre-jump in person its a 1000 times gnarlier than what it shows in this video. I can't even imagine the balls needed to send that.

We also built the doom-gap wood feature he hits, and Mark and Riley finished off building the tranny on it on the other side. So stoked to see someone use this on an edit. I know a few people have tee'd it up, but its pretty far out of the way.

@jackalope: that is the dumbest thing I ever read on this site....and theres a lot of dumb stuff
  • 16 0
@lastminutetech: Wow, that means a lot to me. I mean, to beat out Waki, Protour and countless others who have posted neurologically damaging things on PB is quite an accomplishment. I mean hell, it sounds like I even beat out you, who clearly thinks I was seriously upset about it. As someone who happens to build things very, very similar to what Mark jumped over, I think it would be rad AF if someone cleared one of my features like that. In fact, we have a jump to an elevated platform and then stepdown off said platform that theoretically could be gapped by someone like Mark - I would be cheering and offering free malted beverages to him if he (or anybody for that matter) pulled it off. That said, I will still be expecting my "dumbest PB post" trophy in the mail post haste.

@neubiker - thats some baller features ya got there, and I'm always jelly of what you guys do in BC (island or otherwise!). As mentioned above, my original comment was in complete jest, and as someone who's built my own share of wooden/dirt features, I don't care how anyone hits it. My only b!tch is when people try to alter what I've done or do stupid sh!t like skid up dirt ramps, stop and then stand on the top of the lip.

To reiterate, Mark is a preternatural talent and I think his move was one of the cooler things I've ever seen in a video. Having recently seen some WC riders up close in action, it further reinforces they do things with bikes that I could not even conceive of.

yeah I was like ...did he just .... did he just blind gapped it ? .... obviously its his backyard and hometrails and he studied it before actually trying it and surely this is the billions attempt but still ..... loooks crazy casual and good

I met Mark at the MSA world championships and because I have friends and family near the area we agreed upon a ride. Actually I asked to go for a ride. However I think a ride on the trainer or along the boulevard on the ocean is closer to what I could handle with him by the looks of this video. Good luck this year.

Sick video and that first woodwork jump...!!! props for landing it like butter. Saw those TLD Adidas pants in Black on the Brendog video, thought they were cool. Then saw the price!!!

Maybe it's the music or his disposition, but he's so casually gnarly you almost miss what he's doing.

Had to rewatch like 5 times to make sure I wasn't overreacting.

@jackalope: Why are you guys down voting jackalope...?? Jackalope was throwing a joke out there... Yeah, this dude sends. You guys are tools.

Jumping over that entire bridge is really uncouth. I have pedaled hard into it a couple times imagining I was setting up to actually try jumping over it and ya................not gonna happen, ever. Mark has total confidence, I don't think that jump-over move is even that big of a deal for him.

He sends it bigger on his Enduro bike, than he does on the bike with the big Boing Boing.
