Video: 'I Want to Make Mountain Biking Look as Cool as it Feels' - Matt Hunter's 'This is Home'

Jul 28, 2021
by SHIMANO

For many people, mountain biking is a migratory sport. Once you get a taste for the trails, moving closer to ride every day is a no brainer for those who choose the lifestyle. For Matt Hunter, migration was never necessary. He grew up in Kamloops, where the surrounding landscape was an ever-present inspiration for his own riding.

A child of the BC outdoors, Matt’s idea of a good day is any day he gets to ride his bikes. It’s never been about being the best, but rather standing shoulder to shoulder with his peers, never apart and never above. Matt has always just wanted the sport to look as good as it feels when he stomps his butter-smooth lines and gargantuan airs.

In his hometown of Kamloops, Matt never needed to journey far to escape the distractions of everyday life. Now with kids of his own, however, those precious moments are all the more enriched by the people around him. Chill rides with the fam or power trains on The Farm, This is Home.

Hunter became my favorite rider after Roam - that cheese wedge step down shot...so epic.
  • 25 1
his part in that movie got me more stoked than any part in any movie ive seen

Dude yes! That last segment in roam with a rise against soundtrack and matt hunter doing gaps that are still massive by today’s standards. One of my favorites!

Awesome film. I just assume everyone in the loops is a shredder. Lifestyle is on point.
  • 3 0
His Seasons segment is b*tchin too! love the different bikes he rides through that segment.

All star team produces all star story que my new favourite piece since TV's "This is Home". That looked as cool as I imagine it feeling!

Matt you're one of the kindest, most genuine and humble folks in mountain biking, a true role model for life. Thanks for everything you've done for mountain biking and thanks to Anthill, Sterl, Miles and others for being there to capture nearly two decades of inspirational shredding!

Nobody puts out better content that MH.

Tough not to get stoked watching Hunter and some Fugazi always sounds great.
  • 3 0
saw this comment, skipped around the video until i found the fugazi part. went back and watched the whole thing
  • 2 0
 Yes! Waiting Room.
  • 2 0
@jlang002: I saw Fugazi six or seven + times (went to college in DC) over the years including one of their earliest shows where Guy was still mostly on the side of the stage singing back up on few songs. I've been revisiting their whole catalog as of late as spurred on by the "End on End" podcast. Great stuff!

This whole film series from Shimano has been soooo danged good.

Soundtrack on this one was on point. Sort of contemplative and folksy/rootsy vibes as he's reflecting and showing off family and his own past. Then opening chords to "Waiting Room" when he gets back together to do some shredding with the boys.

That song was used in a rad MTB movie from back in the day & I can never remember which one. Always gets me fired up tho.

“I wanna build something that shows how mountain biking is happening in my head and what I’m imagining. Hopefully people see that and they get stoked to get out and ride.” - Matt Hunter in Seasons.

This dude became one of my favorite riders after watching the collective movies.

10/10 had goosebumps when he sent that insane jump in Seasons.
  • 3 0
I'll openly admit to a serious man crush. He gets it. And sends it. Boss.
  • 3 0
Matt is the real deal super chill sender bro that I think we’ve all liked to pretend we are before.
  • 2 0
His section in Seasons has had me on a 13-year journey to find a downloadable version of "Fleeing the Scene" by Sick Days.

Anybody got a Spotify link?

A true legend and hero of the world of bikes. Thank you. Sincerly, the entire biking community.

What an amazing film. Mountain bike films just aren't as good as they were in Roam, The Collective, Seasons, Follow Me, and Life Cycles...
  • 4 0
I still watch those movies. They are epic and soul full; really capture the sport. The new films are good too, but I also keep going back to the oldies.

Trail Hunter Japan was and still is my favorite mtb vid to date. So much so I made it a goal to go ride Japan and do laps on the appropriately named, "Matty's Loop" at Fujiten a couple of summers ago. It felt as cool as it looked. Thanks Matty!

i go back to that one all the time

These Shimano edits have been so good. The doggy one. Blueprint. And this one. Such good vibes. Also felt like stumpy evo ad pt. 2
  • 1 0
Yes! Casey Brown's one is a beautiful thing as well. They're not all about shredding and slow mo's, but they feel like they really capture the other parts of the scene that I love.
  • 5 1
Man I so wish I could just drop my 9-5 job and do something like this....what an awesome lifestyle. I don't even care about being crappy at mountain biking, it's the true feeling of freedom and separation from society that is so appealing to me.
  • 6 0
What do you call a legend among legends? Matty is that. Really enjoyed this.
  • 7 1
What a great video...and added bonus was Fugazi added to the soundtrack.
  • 5 4
Fuck that. Fugazi on a commercial for bike parts is plain wrong.
  • 2 0
@JLantz: decontextualization on a level that rivals a Commencal rap segment. Amazing world we live in, embrace the ridiculous!
  • 3 0
@JLantz: Sounds like you're too punk rock for mtb.
  • 4 1
@steveczech: We should definitely ridicule the guy pointing out the absurdity of using an anti-corporate, anti-consumerism band in a long form advertisement. Apply some kind of purity test to him so we can ignore what he's saying. That sounds like the solution.

FWIW, I thought the song fit perfectly, but I felt a bit dirty for thinking so. I do wonder if they managed to get it officially cleared, and if they did, how?
  • 5 1
Dude this makes me want to ride. more videos from these guys please. Im also going to rewatch all of the collective vid's... sick.

Matt has been one of my favorite riders to watch, ever since I saw his part in Follow Me. His riding in that film and attitude in general embodies so much of what it means to be a mountain biker. Thank you Matt!!
  • 2 0
Remember seeing Matt on the Collective with his metallic green Demmo 9 . So cool to know his whole story and progression as a solid character that made it work in the buisness of Free Riding. I remember riding Rose Hill when videos were on VHS. The bikes have changed a bit. But the love of riding and being out doors is the same. Now he is passing on that love to the next generation. Sweet vid. Music was perfect.

Great to hear some Rural Alberta Advantage too. Been a minute since I listened to them. Anyone know if they have new stuff?
  • 2 0
Not that I've heard recently, although now I want some!

Last album dropped in 2017 (yet another banger), and I think they have more in the works, but nothing immediate as far as I know.
  • 2 0
His videos make me immediately want to drop this computer and go outside. Even If It is just for a walk. His view on life is so simple and I love It. Hope I can pass that to my kids

♫ Bar Leans Matt Hunter Style ♫

Some photo of the year contenders in this story too! The 4th photo from the top, of him hipping out of the dusty berm is a rad photo, I'd vote for that for sure!

So true. Not just the dirt, "it's the people" of the Loops. Well said! Despite the current smoke and wildfire situation here in Kamloops, this vid really put things back into perspective. Thanks Matt and Shimano! :-)

Matt is hands down the coolest Rider in my Eyes and has been ever since I first saw Seasons. I still have a big Poster of him hitting that Jump hanging in my Room

Matt Hunter and Thomas Vanderham, two guys that caught my eyes and start to mountainbiking. They represent our sport in a great way. A style, a sport, a hobby and lifestyle well lived.
  • 3 0
so rad! for sure one of my favorite riders to watch

Followed Hunter, then Hunter and miles for years.love their style and attitude towards the sport and the environment that provides for it. Long overdue.

all This Is Home episodes are special but this one is kurwa pure gold

Easier to have him running around with sticks outside than in the house. Exactly how Im trying to raise my kids. Love if the outdoors starts with parents.
  • 1 0
Vid really captures the spirit of mtb. Matt has and always will be one of the best ambassadors of the sport. We're lucky to have him and so is specialized Wink

 V.O.Y!
What a stand up athlete/family man/free-rider.
Met Matt at IB one year, and he was genuinely humble and friendly. Keep on Living the Dream

That was so awesome, great vibe.

**checks home prices in Kamloops**
  • 1 0
Lol, your thought prompted me to look at home prices just because...guess you need big bags of money to live there or accept apartment life. I'm not seeing much of anything going for less than $500,000CAN and most fetch upwards of $700,000CAN...yikes. That's not all that much better than Squamish, Whistler, or Pemberton. BC house prices have just gone bonkers.
  • 1 0
@SuperHighBeam: Canada's housing market is experiencing a boom not seen in a very long time (if ever). Without getting into economics they should come down in the not too distant future. But it's also Canadian Pesos so $700,000 isn't too bad. Every Canadian looks at housing prices in Texas and swoons over the mansions we could own.
  • 6 0
@samnation: Yeah, but then you'd be in Texas....
  • 2 0
@samnation: $700,000 CAD is still $560,000 USD. That ain't affordable by any extent of the imagination. That takes a 30 year mortgage and two six figure incomes to afford whilst still having a discretionary budget for other things. For most the sweet spot is between $300,000 - $400,000 USD and you can't find that in Kamloops, let alone much of anywhere in BC.
Housing in Texas may be cheap, but there aren't really any mountain biking options or destinations to consider their. Texas is a great place to be if you want a big nice house on a lot of land and don't care what the topography looks like which is usually very flat and often desolate. So in many respects, it is cheap because its and unattractive place to live. The parts of Texas that are, generally, more desirable to live in also happen to be more expensive, go figure. Any place if interest to live tends to be expensive because there is bourgening demand to live their and there is limited housing inventory to sell. It's an aweful and unfortunate catch 22.

THIS made my Day, Thanks Hunter
  • 2 4
I like the wooded parts of Kamloops, but so much of it is a dusty desert in the middle of nowhere. After 27 years of desert it's nice to be in temperate forest areas all the time. That said, not too envious of Kamloops overall. For what it's worth, they have the most impressive women's mountain biking community I have ever heard of which is to say, if you're looking for a female partner that is into mountain biking and you haven't found them where you are go to Kamloops, you'll likely find that special person there.

I was really loving this edit, but as soon as Waiting Room by Fugazi started playing my eyes became wet.
  • 1 0
You know he is good when Fugazi let him use their music, never heard them in an edit.

Mountain biking is the new golf. Like it or not, it's easy to be cool these days.
  • 2 0
Will Ferrell, Chad Smith and Matt Hunter should do a movie together
