Video: Matt Stuttard's First Snowy Shred on the Prototype Privateer E-161

Jan 23, 2021
by PrivateerBikes

We first announced the E-161 back in September after an amazing opportunity to work with Shimano presented itself. After being blown away by a brief test ride, we knew this was the system to build Matt’s eagerly awaited training tool.

With nearly twelve months of design and discussion already in place, building the first bike as a proof of concept, we knew there was a lot of hard work ahead and that it wouldn’t be ready till Matt had given us his sign off.

The idea of this project goes right back to the beginning of Privateer, with Matt asking for a bike just as capable as his race rig, but with the assistance to get him back up to the top, letting him squeeze more runs out of those short winter days.

bigquotesIt's feeling pretty planted, nice and fast, even in icy snow conditions...oh it's sick! Matt Stuttard

There is still a lot of exciting development ahead, so if you’re keen to find out more and be the first to know when the bike is on sale, sign up for our newsletter here!

As a late Christmas present, we managed to piece together a test bike ready for Stuttard to ride, just as the weather decided to get cold and snowy…perfect!

Cool how the ride starts in snow and ends without. I'm currently doing a lot of fat biking on snow packed trails and the weather in the video would be a late fall day for us. Almost all the video shows him shredding down hills, which has little to do with an ebike, except how it handles suspension wise. Having just turned 64 and the climbing is getting, well, long in the tooth like me, and can absolutely see an e-bike in my future. Maybe two of them, one e-mountain and one e-fat bike for winter.

Ok - we need a list of bike companies that DON'T make an ebike now. It's a list that is getting smaller and smaller...

(PS. I don't hate on them too bad, but they aren't for me until I'm older / fatter...)

@L0rdTom: To be fair it was just an observation of mine that there's very few big brands that don't do an ebike now. I can see why people may vote my comment as negative but it really wasn't meant that way - I'll definitely get an ebike one day, just not for quite a while!

So we can tick them off as they fade into obscurity and go bust for not moving with the times?

Looks great and sounds very promising!
Then there’s how expensive it will be to purchase in UK from an EU country?

 Isn’t that Peckett Well.

Looks kinda hideous, like most e-bikes. That’s the biggest downside for me.
  • 5 6
Yeah looks truly awful but a lot of folks don’t care what stuff looks like if it works ok. Sooner or later someone will manufacture one that doesn’t look shite...probably when batteries become more compact.

Actually this one looks way better than other E bikes Looks better than a trek

I recognise tunnel of love, but where are those other trails?
  • 1 1
given how heavy the 161 is that shimano motor is going to have its work cut out

E-bikes are the future, like 29 inch wheels, someday I might need one.
