I love how they had helmets on when riding bikes.

How many fewer kids would suffer brain injuries each year if Pinkbike announced today that they'll post sponsored-rider videos only if the riders are wearing helmets? More than a few, I bet.

@Phillyenduro: BMX is the only discipline that rides without a helmet. PB posts a BMX video maybe once a quarter, tops?

99% of people visiting this site are interested in MTB. Perhaps some enjoy MTB and BMX. If they enjoy both, they are more than likely wearing a helmet, carrying it over from MTB. The only kids sending it with no helmet are spending their time on VitalBMX, TranswolrdBMX, etc... don’t think it’s necessary or beneficial for PB to draw that kind of line in the sand.

 @diegosk: ever hear of skateboarding?
  • 30 0
@nyhc00: yup, did it for a long time. Thought we were just talking about bikes. I’ve seen basketball players smack their heads on the concrete. Ive seen rugby players take huge hits on the head. Fighting/boxing is a very popular sport these days where you sign up to get hit in the head. American football players show severe brain damage even after wearing helmets their entire career. I am pro helmet, just don’t think PB needs to draw a line in the sand.

@diegosk: first of all , there is an entire generation of BMX riders who now ride MTB (we are in our 30's - 40's now) while we aren't kids , many still ride BMX , and when riding street , most don't wear helmets. Helmets are more common in park and dirt riding , and always have been.
  • 5 1
@DGWW: very true. I still ride both. Perhaps I got overly defensive. I guess I didn’t agree with the initial implication that PB is indirectly responsible for “more than a few” youth concussions just because they’ve reshared a few bad ass BMX videos recently.

@diegosk: I'm with you , that's total BS. It's not pinkbike's job to censor the content it hosts. Small scale technical BMX tricks without a helmet are far less dangerous than what we saw in brage's part just the other day !

It’s actually pathetic that whenever pinkbike posts a bmx edit there’s always a gang of Karen’s talking about helmets in the comments even if the guys actually wearing one. If someone wants to ride without a helmet they should be free to do so.

Beats the classic hat fall off every trick routine.

I just hope they swam between the flaGS

I'm guessing his insurance requires it also.

Mongoose specifies in their contracts that their riders need to wear helmets when being filmed or pictured. Good for the brand and good for the sport. I grew up in the era when helmets weren't "street" but now it seems to be more personal choice. I don't let my kid ride without one.

@DGWW: I was chewing over what you wrote and came to the realisation I rode all through the '70s and '80s without a helmet. Huh. Completely forgot. Just around town but still.
  • 2 1
@thenotoriousmic: yeah, I'd say playing football is probably more brain damaging than bmx.
  • 6 1
@thenotoriousmic: 95% of the pinkbike community has no grasp on the "counter-culture" roots of BMX.

@dkendy1: I feel most will not understand this one
  • 1 2
Ohh no how could they. The outrage.
  • 1 0
I do wonder if the helmet has almost become a corporate symbol thanks to Redbull, Monster etc sponsorships and big brands insisting on helmet usage.

I will never be good at BMX but god do I fucking love watching it. That footplant nac over the railing was sick!
  • 1 0
 YES! That was so nice

Mad props to this dude. Thats some serious stuff. GNAR GNAR

Love this so much. Cool to see Mongoose doing something things with solid riders. I think they are a private company again? It'd be nice to see their kids BMX's continue to turn into something nice. Last I looked, for 200$ you could get their Legion 18" and the geo at least looked dialed. Hard to tell if the components and high10 frame were good but it looked the part. That cheap BMX is the gateway to more skilled, diverse riders out there...that might someday pickup a MTB

BMX: That's a young man's game. Gawd damn.

Great to see Mongoose is still around. I got the Mongoose Californian back in 1984? It was a huge seller that almost every kid had (I think it was cheap but labeled as "chromoly" but it was just the front triangle on the frame was chrome, the rear was steel, hence the discount price compared to other manufacturers). The rims had these circular punch holes between the spokes, the pads had that ultra cool "chrome" look mongoose font. Just a huge leap for BMX. A first step into a larger world.

 Sic riding. +++ for helmet.
  • 5 0
God damn. Probably the most fun guy to watch ride street.
  • 4 0
I need to stop watching videos, they ultimately remind me how much I fucking suck
  • 2 0
 So fluid and dialed...
I wonder how much of a treasure trove of pre-covid footage is out there... it's been over a year and videos keep dropping from the "before times".
  • 3 0
Many riders kept riding. No reason to stop if riding outside

Kevin is a gnarly rider. Great job on the edit.

@greenpistol: Raised in the Dirty T. And we can thank him for Premises too.
  • 1 0
@greenpistol: Yup. There's a mural of him on the side of Cicli Noé on South 6th. He's a solid kid, in addition to being a badass rider.

I remember him and his brother from Ajo bikes in Tucson! So cool to see his career take off.
  • 1 0
Ajo!! I was a BMX salesrep for a few years and there was a dude from Ajo named "Noy" (not sure spelling) who was one of my favorite people to answer a phone call from. Dude loved riding bikes, always had funny stories and I am pretty sure I got a contact high through the phone every time he called...hahaha!!!

@bobbyridesbikes512: awesome! That was the first of many bike shop stints for me. His name was pronounced “no way”. Awesome kid, shredder on the bmx.
  • 1 1
Why not just have a disclaimer before every video saying wear your helmet even if you're showing footage without it. Kids are inspired by the content not that they have a helmet or not

 This is beyond science

Came here to say the same thing, my favorite trick of the whole edit....
  • 1 0
so true, that was my favorite trick of the vid. I love tire grabs in general, but a can-can tire grab off a wall ride.... so good.
  • 3 3
Beautiful stuff, and kudos for wearing the helmets. Its too bad theres nothing to protect his ankles and knees from that pounding. Looks grinding!
  • 2 1
What were those weird bucket-like things they had on their heads....? Never seen anything like that before.
  • 2 0
This guys playing on veteran difficulty.

Yikes, insane control. Wish I could spin like that
  • 1 0
What do you even call riding with the front wheel backwards, arms crossed?
  • 1 0
 X-up ride.
  • 1 0
Cool but isn't riding BMX with a helmet cheating?
  • 1 0
 insane skill level

I wonder what frame he actually rides, not likely actually on a mongoose.
  • 1 0
 Laird Frame
  • 1 0
@Icaru5: nice. I know he did some custom disk brake units , legend.
  • 1 0
@DGWW: Mike Laird (Lairdframe) does the frames for the Pro Riders with Mongoose. Should have the Mongoose seatstay bridge and so on in there.
