Video: Moab's Captain Ahab Like You've Never Seen Before in 'Transcend'

Jan 28, 2019
by Canyon

Imagine this; take your favorite trail—the one you can jam through with your eyes closed—and take a picture in your mind. Got it? Feel every turn? See every tree, every drop, every little rock? Now flip it, and take another picture of the trail... as it flows uphill. Do you recognize it? Would you know its subtleties the way you do when you’re headed down?
bigquotesI want to inspire people to take their local trail and reimagine it.Braydon
On a biting cold winter day, Canyon rider Braydon Bringhurst wondered the same. So he brought his Canyon Spectral to Moab’s Captain Ahab trail, and turned a familiar trail on its head by heading up. “I absolutely love descending, but I also really love technical climbing.” Bringhurst says. “I try to make the most of my entire ride. Climbing up and cleaning a technical climb gets me just as pumped as a sick drop or gap. I just love it all.”

Transcend is about elevating yourself beyond the usual. Developing a new perspective for the trails you ride and reinventing what’s familiar. And maybe, as Bringhurst does, proving that yes—you can have steeze while going up.

“The reason I named this film Transcend is because I want to inspire people to take their trail and reimagine it and do more.,” he says. “I hope this film gets people stoked to go out and reimagine, look at their own trails in a new way.”

Enjoy this journey on Captain Ahab… going up!

Ok well that's it for nose bonks I guess. Pack it up boys, we're done here.

Hah...I thought the same thing. I watched that part like 5 times

I was like... eh there's nothing crazy in this video... nose bonk... pew mind blown
  • 24 4
the riding style reminded me a lot of jeff kendall weed. awesome skillz
  • 10 4
 @funkzander:

Yeah but Braydon has more style for sure. All this stuff looks better on 27.5 wheels anyway unless your a tall dude, or your name is Sam Hockenhull or Jasper Penton... Or Luke Strobel...

Danny Macaskill's riding seams way less impressive now.

@funkzander: Jeff is a rad rider... appreciate you comparing me to him!

I was JUST about to write that nose bonk thing at 2:00 was bonkers!

 Incredibly impressive. This dude floats.

That’s some nice technical climbing but let me just say that yesterday I climbed a fire road for five whole minutes without a break.
  • 2 0
Wait wait wait just a damn minute. Didn't anyone read the comments about the new Canyon Strive? According @Mondbiker geo like this is going to climb terrible because not enough seat angle. What is this sorcery?
  • 47 1
That's some tasty riding. This is my favorite video I've seen in years. Cool to see some footage from Jackson and slickrock thrown in there too.

Encouraging riders to xc up frequently used DH trails is stupid, dangerous, and annoying. There are plenty of other xc rides in the Moab area that offer technical climbing challenges.
  • 3 0
I'd say he pretty much rode THROUGH that shit.
  • 24 3
@Flowcheckers: Most of the stuff he was climbing up was upper ahab not really what I would call a DH trail...
  • 6 0
Agree! It would be nice to see more Moab edits like this.

@projectnortheast: He doesn't mention it the the intro, he just naively says:

"Enjoy this journey on Captain Ahab… going up!"

Not giving any type of disclaimer and naively encouraging this people to ride up established downhills is stupid, I stand behind my comment and other comments agree with mine.

This dude is so talented. I watch his IG videos on repeat. Awesome to see him slay one of my favorite trails!
  • 5 0
Thanks a bunch man! Two crazy days for sure... hiked out under the moonlight. All worth it in the end.
  • 1 0
HA! Prenup switchback, nuff said! ????
  • 2 0
@Bikerbrayd: Well done. The manny to nose bonk out to pothole/jackson, the sui and big rock double on ahab, the fast plant. All savage.
  • 24 0
I am also 5'9, I love pepperoni pizza and I ride a black Canyon Spectral. Sadly, that is where the similarities end... I can only dream of having those skills and trails to ride like that!
  • 22 1
For the worriers, I'd cut the uphillers some slack. They're not idiots; they're 1) often some of the most seasoned riders out there, 2) the type of person to do this huge challenge is quick and done, 3) they're very few and far between, 4) they usually do their thing in off-peak hours, and 5) they certainly know to GTFO of the way when they hear an approaching train.

I've done this for fun on a few trails and all five apply. You never even saw me.

Anyway, the trail doesn't care which way it goes.

Not only is Braydon an (obviously) incredibly talented rider, he’s also very personable, and super supportive of our local riding scene here in Boise. I so glad that he’s decided to call our city his home, and looking forward to seeing what his inspiration will do for our riding community!
  • 5 0
Appreciate that... Love boise and love sharing my passion with the community I live in. Stoked at what's to come this spring!
  • 17 0
Not gonna lie, I love a good, technical climb edit
  • 6 0
I moved from Austin to the Bay Area and while it’s amazing out here, I didn’t realize how much I’d miss technical climbing.
  • 12 0
I met Braydon at my local jump park when he used to live in Utah. He's super talented but also really nice and helpful. He helped me break down hitting a jump that I had wanted to hit for a long time but was scared of. I'm really grateful for riders like that.

 Rad dude! Cheers!

Probably not a problem on a really cold winter's day, but isn't Ahab a uni-directional trail? A pro doing a video is one thing, but I'd hate to see a bunch of knobs trying to climb this in mid-May, while everyone else is trying to to ride down.

At any rate, cool video. I've never been to the top of that dome.
  • 10 1
If you believe Trailforks, lower Ahab is one-way and upper Ahab is bi-directional. In my half dozen rides on Ahab I've never seen anyone ride up it. I'd expect some seriously irritated descending riders if other riders are ascending.
  • 4 0
@Inertiaman: lower Ahab is DH only. Sometimes I ascend upper Ahab backwards to save 15 minutes. 95% ridable for the majority, and the steep tech moves are great practice for that crazy ledgy between the boulders spot near the top. Great video!

ACHKCHUALLLAY, uphill riders have the right of way. That’s how bikes get banned. Illegal trails are bad too /nasally voice
  • 3 1
@sumarongi: except they’re not supposed to go up, in which case, they’re just knobs...
  • 11 1
If I’m descending that thing and I see someone attempting to climb it I’m gonna’ be all ‘kudos to you brosef!’
It’s biking not an international airport tarmac.
  • 5 1
New Utah trail etiquette rules state that whatever direction you are riding, everyone else has to yield to you. So if I'm going uphill then downhill traffic needs to yield and once I'm going downhill then uphill traffic needs to yield to me. Also, if you have a gopro and are on the youtubes, then you definitely have the right of way.

This is one of the better edits I’ve seen in a while. Jibby trail riding gets me more stoked than anything. And anyone that’s ridden Ahab knows how damn impressive riding up it is. That fast plant was high consequence too. Looong way down if you botch that one.
  • 10 1
One of the best videos I have seen in years. The creativity going up and down is absolutely amazing.
  • 2 0
Thank you! Usually only have an hour or two before work or school so I try to make the most of my time on the trail... both up and down.
  • 6 0
Dang- that was a master class in technical bike control and wringing every ounce of fun out of a trail. So many cross-discipline skills. Very fun to watch and huge props for that riding. Couple of moves in there I'll be trying out. Thank you!
  • 1 0
 rad.... thank you!
  • 6 0
Ahhh I love this kind of riding, seeing people blast down stuff so fast you can't even see the trail is neat, but it gets old after a while. Think this is my favorite video i've ever seen
  • 7 0
Hey, at 2:25 they put those small rocks in front of the big one for a reason, not so you could just go flying over them without even touching them.
  • 8 0
How can he ride a bike with 650b wheels??
  • 2 0
all the freeride guys and 50to01 guys run 650b. They are better wheel size for having fun to jump and many other things. 29ers are made to go fast pretty much

@LostKeys: Thanks for finally settling the debate, everyone can calm down now

I watched this and thought I rode this trail in 2016 and only had trouble with a few spots on the climb and was fairly proud of myself that maybe I'm as good a rider as this guy...and then I read that he was riding it backwards.
  • 3 0
SO...a Canyon, in a canyon... I had the pleasure of riding that trail. It is amazing and worthy of anyone's bucklist for riding spots.
  • 4 1
Sick riding. That wasn't all Captain Ahab, though, right? The big open spots looked like over at Slickrock or maybe out and back towards Pothole Arch, above Ahab
  • 4 1
The quarter pipe and open area on the cliff are not the Ahab trail I know.
  • 2 0
You are right. All the trails he was on is around ahab.
  • 2 0
Captain Ahab, Jacksons, Rockstacker, Pothole Arch. All in that area. Thank you! Go get it!
