Video: Mondraker Athletes Ride Retro Downhill Bikes in Val di Sole to Celebrate 20 Years of Racing

by James Smurthwaite

Mondraker celebrates 20 years of downhill racing with a new edit of riders shredding two decades worth of bikes on the brutal modern-day Val di Sole track. Mondraker's first-ever model, the Petrol, kicks off the run but we also see a Kaiser and versions of the Summum from the 2012 prototype to Laurie Greenland's race-winning machine from last year. All the details on the bikes and riders are below:

bigquotesThe new video chronicles Mondraker’s history, beginning with founder Miguel Pina bursting out of the starting gate on the Petrol – Mondraker’s first ever DH model, released in 2001. With the unmistakable voice of downhill ex-pro and Red Bull commentator Rob Warner calling the action, viewers are then treated to the 2007 Kaiser and the World Cup winning 2009 Summum Prototype being threaded down the famous descent.

bigquotesFormer European Downhill Champion Markus Pekoll takes over on the 2012 Summum Pro Team, raising the pace and viewers’ pulses, before MS Mondraker’s Laurie Greenland thrashes down the lower slopes on the 2016 Summum WC Special Edition – the bike that famously whitewashed the podium at the 2016 UCI DH World Championships. Greenland, shredding it on the 2020 Summum Carbon Pro Team, completes the blistering run on the rig that brought him his first World Cup Elite race victory at the very same track.Mondraker

 The first bike's geo looks similar to Cube's 2018 geo

 true dat!
i tried to ride one a year ago- it reminded me more of my 2007 Teocali than a proper DH bikeSmile

 @WAKIdesigns: Hi Waki, would you consider maybe switching back to the swedish flag? It's really disturbing for people, that change. Thanks

 @Aprilfisheye: underrated comment. i was swiftly looking over the flags and missed the Swedish flag. Can't be.
@WAKIdesigns please change back, this is a Public Service Announcement.

 When’s Marzocchi (cough cough fox) gonna bring the shiver back?!

 As soon as they can make it as light and precise as a 40 for a similar price.

 @yvidal: Yep. They're not depriving us of a brilliant inverted fork because they're cruel or don't like making money.

 And when is someone going to buy the rights to Zzyzx and Hanabrink to bring those soda can stanchion legs back?

 @vjunior21: it's call a Fox 40 lol
  • 1 1
 @brassinne: yeah I run one on the front of my bike currently.

 @deli-hustler:
But do they make the Fox 40 with 6 inches of travel and V brake compatible? I would also like the option of a 100mm QR drop out too in case i want to get nostalgic and have the front end of my bike flex like a noodle. LOL

 Am I the only super fan of this brand in the States? I own 2 and I think they are superior machines but I've yet to see another one on the trails in 18 months of ownership.

 I sell and ride them here in the Bay Area. Truly awesome instruments of destruction! Anywho, their scarcity is their charm. The carbon Foxy29 RR SL is a head turner for sure. I've sold them by simply riding around on it!

 I saw one in the PNW a couple months ago.

 Saw a few in Colorado last year

 So you mean to say I DONT need a Carbon 29 DH bike to ride downhill?

Mind BLOWN.

 Wow. Love this. Great voice over and music combination that captures the insanity of racing. Interesting to see the progression of the bikes too. A really good way to sell your racing history.

 I like how they showed the older bikes as slower but in reality the riders skill level was upped with each bike. Smart play. would be interesting to see Greenland ride all the bikes over timed testing,no company would do it of course. Because they know we might only see a difference of 3-4 seconds. Big margins for wc racer,but irrelevant for a punter.

 Greenland did an interview with Vital a couple of years ago and said he went quicker on the 26 Summum during a test day at Schladming.
