Video: Moto Freeride in Los Angeles with Robbie Maddison & Tyler Bereman

Jan 21, 2020
by Sarah Moore

bigquotesTraffic. We’ve all been there—trapped in gridlock, inching along at a snail’s pace, slowly losing our sanity and wishing we could break free. In “Duct Out,” freeride motocross riders Tyler Bereman and Robbie Maddison do exactly that—they escape Los Angeles holiday weekend traffic by parking their truck, hopping on their dirt bikes and ripping through the city landscape to make it their personal playground. They pass iconic landmarks, tear through back alleys and crisscross the LA river aqueduct on their mission to navigate the path less travelled and escape the city’s freeway congestion.

Highlights along the way include the two riders taking a shortcut through the middle of Los Angeles City Hall, built in 1928, Bereman jumping the gap on Upper S. Grand Ave. with lower S. Grand Ave 34 feet below, and Maddison jumping from the 1st Street Bridge down into the Los Angeles River a whopping 46 feet below.

Join Maddo and Tyler for a Southern California freeride like no other in "Duct Out.
Red Bull

The Farm Jam organizers just announced that Tyler Bereman will be at the event next month. The Farm Jam combines natural-terrain freestyle motocross, BMX and mountain-bike dirt-jumping.

Dear Redbull, next time just make a 10 second insta clip of the bridge drop, that was boring repetitive drone footage.
  • 90 0
exactly my thoughts. Apart from the bridge jump, the drone operator was the real freerider in this video.
  • 19 1
I'm guessing they're supposed to be cool shots on areas that are normally impossible to shoot on but good lord. That was worth it just for that bridge drop. Absolutely crazy. It looks like his front wheel taco-ed a little on impact.
  • 30 2
Hate to say it but in this day and age, that was overall pretty weak. Other than the bridge drop, kept wondering when they were going to do something creative. (I accept full responsibility for being ruined by the mind-blowing things I regularly see online!)
  • 6 0
@scott-townes: Damn yeh just watched it back at .25 speed and that's a yuuuuuuge flat spot
  • 5 0
@scott-townes: Yeah you are right it definitely wasn’t running true after that. Maybe that’s why he had to wheelie the rest of the video.
  • 20 0
The real question is how long till someone backflips the same drop on a scooter
  • 8 1
What you talking about? This was a great video of E-bikes!
  • 3 0
The tacoed front wheel on the bridge. Then clever edit for river wheelie.
  • 6 0
Duuude came here to say exactly the same... boring video in general... That Bridge jump was the only rad thing.. Wheelies and burnouts ? really ?
  • 1 0
Except the 2 big jumps, normal ride in a lot of other place in the world...But in L.A context, I understand.
  • 2 0
exactly that was on vitals insta this mornin
  • 2 0
Nothing to do against Fabio tbh
  • 1 2
Was an epic drop. free ride masters

I think Wibmer spoiled me. I wasn't prepared for this Wibmer in Paris video but I wasn't prepared for this one either, at the other end of the spectrum.

You right. I wasted 5:32 minutes of my life.

@amonas: I'm glad that i am not the only one who found this video *meh*.

Fabio does it better without a motor
  • 1 0
fabio would do it on a bicycle. and if danny macaskill brings his bike up with a lift, we all know how he's getting down.
  • 71 4
Well I'm a moto rider and a mtb rider and just found this video a snooze fest. boooring....

ok well shit that drop was fucking nuts. Luckily he didn't break his neck in the whiplash.

No wonder nobody takes you guys seriously.
  • 1 0
@Ferd: this drop is crazy, i fully agree that this is insane level; probably video have not the best montage, however epic level of riding
  • 1 0
@Ferd: I saw that set up and thought: "bad idea". Then watched that landing and thought: "really bad idea". Ouch.

@phops: who said pinkbike commentators take themselves seriously?
  • 2 0
@phops: Normally I would agree on PB commentators, - but man that was boring as hell - apart from the bridge drop - if ya gonna make edits then more bangers are needed, thats why special edits are great - otherwise there are more bangers than that in a 5 second insta clip
  • 1 0
same xD Out with that bridge jump, Guess I could do all the rest myself
  • 39 0
I don't know what's more impressive? The massive huck off the bridge, or Redbull managed to get rid of City Halls homeless and rat infestation in a single afternoon LOL!!!!

I like how they got stuck in traffic then cut to a bunch of closed roads that contributed to said traffic.

Am I mistaken that Pinkbike is a forum/site for bicycle content? I mean, the dudes in the vid are great Moto riders n all, but Pinkbike is a place for enthusiasts of cycling right? I would imagine most of us here have very little to no interest in Moto. If there was some sort of crossover here maybe... Like the vid posted a bit ago where that stunt Moto rider went over to the MTB guys house (can't remember what rider it was) and sessions the jump in his backyard. That was fine because it was bicycle related. Videos of just Moto however, I feel it has no place on Pinkbike. There are plenty of other sites out there for Motorvehicle videos and content. I come to Pinkbike for my fix of bicycle news and content and could care less about Moto Bros. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The reason why mountain bikes got better in recent years was the big influx of dirt bike riders into the sport, which used to be mainly dominated by roadies. Slack head angles and long wheelbases and more travel wasn't engineers sitting in rooms doing math, it was dudes hitting bigger jumps and riding rough stuff faster that needed better platforms. Dirt bikes were cool way before mountain biking was, and is a very much part of modern MTB culture. You don't gotta like it, but don't hate it if you ride a modern mountain bike.
  • 6 1
Open any moto magazine- you will see few pages of MTB
  • 3 2
@phops: That might be a reason, but not 'the' reason. Bike design progressed in many ways, and could have been influenced by rider's experiences on DBs. Don't know if there's data to back up that assertion, but from my admittedly limited POV the two groups of two-wheeled enthusiasts didn't cross-pollinate that much.

Pinkbike comments was one of the factors that got me to pull the trigger on moto after 30 years on MTB! DH all the time for us in gravity-deficient regions. I love it so much and still retain no actual interest in ebikes!!

Yeah Id venture to say a lot of us have never owned a moto, for good reason too
  • 11 8
 @twozerosix:

No it literally is the reason. Most of the tech facts that gets thrown around these days when it comes to MTB all came from moto world. The reason you didn't hear about them before is solely because of the road bike origins of mountain biking where none of those things really mattered.

Hydraulic brakes (and recently floating rotors) existed on moto way before they came to MTB world.

Anti-squat was a well known motorcycle thing. Variable swingarm pivots and custom suspension links used to exist for bikes to increase or decrease anti squat.

Trail and head angle (or in moto world, rake angle which is the complement of the head angle), were VERY well studied and researched. Offset triple clamps were used to tune wheelbase and geometric trail forever, and the effect of preload on changing ride height front to back was well understood.

Suspension kinematics were also very well studied in Moto. Suspension linkages translated the arc motion of the swingarm into linear motion of the shock to keep damping consistent, shock and forks had low and high speed damping circuits, and piggy back shocks have been the standard for quite some time, as well as dual crown forks for stiffness. And recently, MTB got the inverted forks which have several advantages - those have been on Motos for quite some time too.

Moto world also had air suspension, including ones where you can adjust multiple chambers for specific response.

And as far as riding goes, DH riding got faster over more challenging terrain. Harder and faster riding required new tech, and all the engineers had to do is to look at the sport that already figured it out. And then DH bled over to enduro, and then enduro bled over to trail, and now you have Trail bikes that have slack head angles with 4 way adjustable forks, piggy back shocks, and anti squat built into the linkage for pedaling.

 First e-bikes, then motos...
  • 11 0
Speak for yourself.. i know a lot of MTB'ers who also ride motos (most of them a quick on both). I much prefer this over eMTB (a sad, half @rsed mix of both moto and mtb).

I love going fast on two wheels, whether its on the road or dirt, whether its with a real motor or none.

I really enjoyed seeing this as a bit of a breakup from the standard mix... also, next time you want some DH gear... save yourself a packet and go buy moto gear (gloves, helmets, jerserys, etc).
  • 1 0
You're not wrong. For example you can see this on tech/computer sites having a lot of articles about cars, mechanical watches or other not related content. Or if you have sister sites then they cross pollinate content between them so it almost doesn't make any difference reading one site or another all designed to bring those users from one site to another. Not completely the same case here, but I understand that Pinkbike likes to have content, and I have no doubt that to satisfy that need they will let pass something which in my opinion is off topic. And in time this can usually just increase as the people get less sensible about it. For example, I like sailing, shouldn't we get an article about that too in time?

PB can we have a label to exclude moto content ? If I would have a MTB site I wouln´d encourage my audience by destroying trails and polluting around...
  • 5 0
I'm honestly more of a moto guy than a MTB guy, but they are my two passions. I totally agree with you here. I go elsewhere for moto news/videos/tech. At least when we're talking about "front page" posts, I see no reason why this should be on Pinkbike.
  • 4 0
@phops: I can't disagree with any of the technical trickle-down aspects, but your original statement said "dirt bike riders coming into the sport" which I didn't think was accurate.

Love riding DBs tho - wish I had more time/money.
  • 1 0
@phops: inverted forks have been a thing in mtb for a little longer than "recently"
  • 1 0
 @Levin192:

A few have been prototyped, but ironically, they ended up heavier than the non inverted versions, and were scrapped, because roadies.

Now you have DVO, Manitou, Intend and X Fusion I think with some very good products.

There is a reason I either ride the pushy but mainly a supermotard to work... while I dont go that crazy.. wheelies, sets of stairs, stoppies, powerslides and speed jumps (speed bumps) are all incorporated into the daily commute and is hilariously fun.. that and the whole lane splitting thing saves me two hrs a day.

why get to work with a sad face when you can arrive full of stoke!
  • 2 1
If I could legit do that without getting cops called on me or a cop seeing me, I would 100% still own a supermotard.
  • 1 0
@phops: the advantages of peak hour traffic... cop motorcycles are too wide to split lanes properly
  • 11 0
Go to minute 4, watch for 30 seconds, move on with your day.

The irony of a video complaining about traffic, when they shut down 2/3’s of downtown to film that.....obviously causing more traffic.

The bridge drop was blocks from my old place downtown. Gnarly for sure.

Where is the button to downvote a "video" news post, thats an ad on PB.
Damn near 6 minute video ad that could have been cut to start at 4:00 and end at 4:30 and I could have walked away happy even though a moto video was posted for a moto/mtb/BMX event.
Just 21 days in and worse post of the decade may have arrived.
Too harsh? not as harsh as that whiplash and exploding tires I just witnessed.
  • 4 1
Is it MTB related in some ways? I see zero correlation. It looks like some advertisement for Red Bull... but it kinda missed the mark, you just target the wrong audience.
Sure there is some crossover, I ride and follow moto racing but this average video look really average and random here!!
  • 5 0
if this was a sick moto video, it'd be one thing to have on the front page, but this was super boring
  • 3 0
The big drop is insane and no doubt this guys are amazing riders but what is the video really showing? 2 guys speeding and doing wheelies down some closed off streets...the end.
  • 3 0
Lots of “panic wheelies”, if it’s not balanced, don’t just wring the guts out of the throttle.

Ken Block does this better on four wheels.

It’s a “meh” from me.
  • 4 0
Wow that was nothing to do with MTB. Also it wasn't entertaining are at all.

Kinda lame. They didn't even try to make it look good visually. Just some techy drones shots do not a goof piece of film making make.
Shot in shit light in all the cliche' LA car commercial / movie chase scene locations. Hell they even used their own base camp for a "scene" and you can see the wet down rig and production moho in the shots lol.

Honestly I know you dont care as to what Im saying. Im just mad at Harley for ruining something good. RIP Alta Motors.

KTM Freeride E-XC, lets see a review in PB!
  • 1 0
 @drivereight:

Never coming to US unfortunately.

The problem with KTM is that KTM dealerships make a lot of money on the sale of the higher end models, and then all the repairs that have to happen on those, so they are not really interested in getting their techs certified to work on the Freeride E, especially because of the low demand.

Im holding out for the Honda one.
