Her breathing in the start hut shows how calm she is right before the start. It only ramps up just before she hits the gas. Allmost equally as impressive! I did not know moving along with a corny 90s song (Haddaway/What is Love) could be good race prep.
@jeroenk: I thought she was doing the fast breathing deliberately from the very beginning of the run… maybe some technique which maximises oxygen intake and Myriam has trained to do it instead of starting calm and getting more ragged?! Surely someone with some sport/training qualification could enlighten us…
@jtn1989: Yawning may help too. First I was a bit ashamed to be yawning before a race, as if I were bored or not sharp. But someone later told me this is normal preparation for the body if it knows it is going to be challenged. That said, fast breathing may be more effective as it gets the heart rate up immediately instead of only 20 seconds into her run. It is probably conscious as I feel I (and most other people I see) almost tend to hold my breath before a sprint-start. Which, thinking of it, is pretty useless.
From what I recall, she's always exceeded Rachel and Tahnee at the gnarliest, ugliest tech. It's traditionally been her jumping that's kept Miriam from completely dominating.
GoPro effect, but to add to that the high level racers are pumping very hard pretty much every spot they can, and often a rough trail has lots of spots to pump/regain speed
Top section case, and a couple of other bits where she seemed to do what Cathro indicated was slower... But watching the live feed you can see what an absolute beast she is pumping and carrying speed through all the rough sections, and she did the bottom ski piste to tarmac finish absolutely perfectly - which obviously more than made up for it.
P.S. I'll have you know I received my degree in cardio-pulminolgy from the Pinkbike College of Medicine.
